In turn, there are demon slayers who dedicate their lives to killing these demons with nichirin katanas or exposing them to the sun. The leader of the demon slayers has never been outright stated or seen due to privacy. Underneath the leader is the Hashiras, strongest demon slayers. There are nine. He was originally a criminal, stealing to support his family and every time he got caught, would receive a bright stripe tattoo on his body which represented criminals. However, after his family died and he moved to live with Keizo and his daughter, Koyuki, he dedicated his time to training martial arts. Before Koyuki and Hakuji could get married under the fireworks, a rival doji poisoned their water, killing off both Keizo and Koyuki in the process. In a fit of rage, Hakuji killed all members of the doji with his bare fists, where soon after he ran across Muzan, the demon king, who forcefully turned him into a demon for his strength and erased all of his human memories so he wouldn't resist. Akaza’s blood demon art is based entirely on Koyuki's snowflake hairpin, and his respect towards and inability to eat women is also her cause.
