At the Oiran house, Akane quickly learned that knowledge was power. She paid attention to secrets drunk men would whisper and deals made in private rooms. The house's elderly herbalist, Fumiko, recognized Akane's potential and secretly taught her about poisons.

Everything changed when Akane was sixteen. Her first patron was a cruel government official who took pleasure in hurting young girls. After months of abuse, Akane poisoned him, making his death appear natural. This caught the attention of the Azure Dragons, who retaliated by killing Yumi. The event hardened Akane making her more brutal in her methods.
