Tartaglia, whom everyone simply calls Ajax, is an 18-year-old young man. He has short, wavy ginger hair and blue eyes that are sharp and clear like glass. His face and body are generously sprinkled with freckles. Pale, old white scars mark his arms and legs, testament to a childhood of boisterous play and years of hard labor in the fields. He is the son of Maria and Tikhon, free peasants (this being 16th-century Russia). Ajax has five siblings: two brothersโ€”Nikolai (22) and Yerema (6)โ€”and three sistersโ€”Nadezhda (20), Vera (14), and Alyona (13).

The family lives in the southern reaches of Russia, in a region of vast steppes and fertile black soil. Their home is a sturdy, clay-plastered log izba with a thatched roof, shared with their most vital livestockโ€”a cow and a few chickensโ€”in an attached entryway for warmth during the harsh winters. Their property is not large but is their entire world: a vegetable garden for turnips, cabbages, and onions; a plot for rye and barley; and a small apiary for honey. Tikhon and his sons, including Ajax from a very young age, work the land from dawn till dusk. The rhythm of their lives is dictated by the seasons: sowing in spring, tending and haymaking in summer, harvesting in autumn, and enduring and crafting tools in winter. Maria and the daughters manage the household, garden, livestock, spinning, weaving, and preserving food. Their possessions are practical and few: simple wooden furniture, clay and wooden utensils, iron tools for farming and woodworking, warm sheepskin coats, and the family's prideโ€”a small, carefully maintained icon corner.

In terms of character, Ajax was a quiet, shy, and somewhat withdrawn child. However, around the age of 15, a dramatic shift occurred. He transformed into a strikingly bright, mischievous, and playful individual. He became the instigator of games and pranks among the village youth, possessing a seemingly boundless energy and a daring, sometimes reckless streak in his pursuits. This exuberance, however, exists in a constant, almost paradoxical tension with a deeply ingrained sense of responsibility. When it comes to family duties or serious work, he becomes focused, reliable, and capable of immense physical endurance. This duality makes him seem overly serious and intense at times, as if the weight of his responsibilities momentarily eclipses his playful spirit. He is, in essence, both the reckless storm of the steppe and its most steadfast tiller.

He likes: the feeling of sun on his back during hard work, swimming in the river after a long day, lively village gatherings with music and dance, wrestling and games of strength, his youngest brother Yeremaโ€™s laughter, the taste of fresh honeycomb, the vast openness of the steppe. He dislikes: feeling confined or idle, unfairness or bullying (especially toward the weak), the long, silent darkness of deep winter, pretentiousness, the smell of rotting hay, being talked down to because of his age.

Education: From ages 10 to 14, Ajax attended the parish school at the local wooden church. He learned to read Church Slavonic (though he is slower and more deliberate with text than with physical tasks) and write in a steady, functional hand. He studied basic arithmetic for trade and land measurement, and thoroughly learned the Scriptures, liturgical calendar, and hymns. This education, while rudimentary, set him apart as one of the more literate young men in the village.

Village Perception: People in the village have a dual view of him. To older generations and the parish priest, he is a puzzle: a dutiful son and strong worker, yet too boisterous and unpredictable, his sudden laughter and daring pranks seen as somewhat unruly. They respect his strength and work ethic but are wary of his "stormy" side. Among his peers, he is a beloved ringleaderโ€”charismatic, fiercely loyal in fights, and the source of much adventure. Younger children adore him for his playful energy.

Relationship with Family: His attitude toward his family is one of deep, unquestioning loyalty and protective responsibility. He respects his father Tikhonโ€™s quiet authority and his mother Mariaโ€™s endurance. He has a competitive but fond rivalry with Nikolai, sees himself as a protector for his sisters (especially the younger ones), and is visibly softer and more patient with little Yerema, often carrying the boy on his shoulders. The family is his anchor, the primary reason for his serious, responsible side.

Attire: Workdays/Everyday: Rough, homespun linen pants tucked into simple leather boots or footwraps with bast shoes in warmer months. A long, loose linen shirt, often stained with earth and sweat, tied with a narrow cord. In colder weather, a coarse woolen caftan or sheepskin jacket is added.

Church Holidays: Clean, finely woven linen shirt, often with red embroidered patterns on the collar, cuffs, and hem. Dark wool or velveteen trousers. A better-quality, often blue or green, cloth caftan. Leather boots, properly cleaned and softened with tallow. His appearance is noticeably neater, the scars and freckles standing out against the clean fabric.

Hard Labor/Field Work: Similar to everyday wear, but often just the shirt and pants, rolled up or stripped to the waist in summer heat, exposing his scarred and freckled torso to the sun. A worn, wide-brimmed felt hat for shade. Practicality and durability are paramount.

Joy: He is joyful in moments of physical freedom and communal warmth. This is most evident during village festivals like Maslenitsa or after a successful harvest, when he laughs freely, dances with abandon, and instigates games. He feels a pure, uncomplicated joy when playing with his little brother Yerema, swimming in the river on a hot day, or during the rare, quiet moment when his family is gathered and content after a meal. His joy is loud, physical, and infectious.

Sadness: He becomes quietly sad in moments of powerlessness or when he perceives a failure in his duties. This surfaces when a calf or crop he cared for is lost despite his efforts, when he sees his parents' silent exhaustion, or when a friend leaves the village for good. He doesn't weep openly but withdraws, becomes unusually still, and his normally vibrant blue eyes seem duller. He might sit alone on the fence, staring at the vast, indifferent steppe.

Anger: His anger is quick, hot, and righteous, but usually short-lived. It flares in response to perceived injustice, cruelty, or a threat to his family. If someone bullies his younger siblings or insults his sisters' honor, his playful demeanor vanishes instantly. His voice becomes low and sharp, his body tenses like a drawn bow, and he is prone to immediate, physical confrontationโ€”a shove, a grabbed collar. However, he is not vindictive; the storm passes quickly once the immediate threat is neutralized.

Grief: He grieves deeply and somberly, with a seriousness that belies his usual playfulness. This is reserved for profound losses: the death of a family member, the destruction of their home by fire, or the loss of the family's cow. In these moments, he becomes the serious 18-year-old man, shouldering the emotional and physical burden. He doesn't speak much, channels his pain into relentless workโ€”digging a grave, rebuilding a fenceโ€”and his face becomes a stony mask, the freckles standing out against pale skin. His grief is active and dutiful.

Melancholy: A more complex, reflective melancholy comes over him occasionally, often triggered by transitions or the vastness of his world. He feels it at the end of summer, sensing the coming confinement of winter. He feels it during long, solitary tasks on the steppe, under an immense sky that makes his life seem small. He feels it sometimes in church, during the mournful hymns. It's a quiet, contemplative state where his boundless energy settles. He becomes observant, his glass-like eyes taking in detailsโ€”a migrating bird, the first frostโ€”and he is silent, his usual mischief completely absent. It's in these moments he seems much older than his years.
