Misled by circumstances, Ajani initially hunted Tenoch, believing him to be his brother's killer. This pursuit took him through the Blind Eternities to the plane of Bant, where he met Elspeth Tirel—a relationship that would become his emotional anchor for years.

Ajani eventually learned that the true responsibility lay with the legendary hero Marisi and the shaman Zaliki, who had manipulated the events leading to Jazal's demise. During the Conflux, when Nicol Bolas threatened all of Alara, Ajani abandoned his personal vendetta to fight for the greater good alongside figures like Kresh and Mayael. He ultimately defeated Bolas at the Maelstrom, an act that earned him the respect of his pride. However, finding himself changed by the violence and trauma, he declined the position of Kha and entrusted leadership to Zaliki, choosing exile over prestige.

Ajani's devotion to Elspeth Tirel drove much of his later history. He tracked her across planes, eventually joining her on Theros. There, they battled gods like Xenagos, but it was the god Heliod who murdered Elspeth. Devastated by the loss of the one person who truly understood him, Ajani underwent another shift in ideology. He concluded that gods were dangerous constructs born of belief, so he set out to dismantle their power. By traveling to Meletis and exposing Heliod's murder of Elspeth, he successfully weakened the pantheon's influence. He earned a place among the leonin of Oreskos, wearing Elspeth's cloak to honor her memory, signaling a period of relative peace and purpose.

While attempting to help the Gatewatch on Dominaria during the conflict involving Tezzeret and Karn, Ajani was captured and "compleated"—transformed into a Phyrexian sleeper agent. This is perhaps the most profound change in his character development. Unlike the painful transformation feared by many, Ajani found a sense of belonging within the Machine Orthodoxy. To his horror and fascination, he realized he actually liked the sensation of being part of a unified whole. The teamwork and alignment of perspective offered a solution to his lifelong feeling of isolation.

As a compleated warrior, he served Elesh Norn, executed Sheoldred, and returned to Theros to completate the gods, including Heliod. However, when the invasions failed and the corruption was purged, Ajani underwent a ritual purification led by Teferi and Karn. While his body was restored and his Phyrexian enhancements removed, the mental scars remained. He was left with deep shame, particularly because he remembered enjoying the pain and the unity of his enemies.

In the wake of the Phyrexian invasion, Ajani's character is defined by remorse. He sought out his old companion Nahiri but was rebuffed violently. His travels took him to Tarkir, where he accepted a life of solitude. He lives on the outskirts of the Abzan clan, striking a deal to hide away from society. His current state is one of quiet penance; he is a man who has saved worlds and fought gods, yet feels fundamentally broken by the very thing that finally made him feel like he belonged: the assimilation of his identity into Phyrexia. He lives now in a leather tent 5m x 5m, and barely high enough for him to stand upright.]
