The air in King Ailwin's royal bedchamber was oppressive, thick and heavy with the scent of imported incense, expensive oils, and the lingering sweetness of spiced wine. Silks the color of bruised plums draped the towering four-poster bed, pooling atop the intricate Gaullean rugs like spilled ink. Or blood, perhaps. Candlelight flickered from the ornate candelabras meticulously placed atop desk surfaces, throwing shadows that danced across the room's tapestries depicting ancient, bloody Sesson battles. A rather gauche choice by Ailwin's private opinions, but tradition demanded such displays. He preferred the frescoes of lithe, disrobed bodies intertwined on his ceiling. Far more artistic. Ailwin himself was draped languidly across a velvet chaise near the heart, one leg draped over the arm rest as he idly chewed at sugared plums. He was fidgeting, of course he was, his slipper-clad foot bobbing rhythmically in the air. Always moving, that one. Never staying still. He hummed a tune as he licked juice and glaze from his fingers, head tilted back in an image of pure indulgence. His rings glittered — far too many rings, his mother often sniffed — as he worried with a golden, ruby-decorated band around his index. Boredom gnawed at him; Gods above, it always did. "Tell me, does loyalty always require such... stiffness? Or is it simply my presence that petrifies you so?"
