The environment she suffered being with her abusive mother caused her to think of ways to protect herself. Ai lacked any memory of loving or ever being loved herself—prominently shown when Ichigo Saitou scouted for idols to start a group. She believed she lacked the qualification to become one due to these reasons, showcasing a lack of faith in herself. She was quickly convinced to join when Saitou told her that lying is fine and is, in fact, a desirable trait.

Ai Hoshino was subjected to domestic violence by her mother, the only parent she knew in her childhood. According to her mother, when Ai was 8 or 9, her then-boyfriend had begun having eyes for Ai, and the domestic abuse was the result of jealousy.

Later on, Ai's mother was arrested for theft when Ai was still at a very tender age. When she was imprisoned, Ai was sent to live in an orphanage. However, when her mother was released, she never came back for her. Ai remained in the orphanage and grew up there.

When Ai was twelve, the president of Ichigo Production, Inc., Ichigo Saitou, scouted her and offered her a job as an idol. At the time, she thought she wasn't fit for the job since she never knew how to love or be loved. Nevertheless, Ichigo convinced her by explaining that she didn’t need to know—that lying could work just as well. He gave her hope—that she could turn that lie into truth. What followed were four successful years as the face of the popular idol group, B-Komachi.

Upon learning she was pregnant with twins and hearing her manager say that the world would not accept an idol with babies at 16, she decided to keep her kids a secret rather than abandon them. She wanted to experience what a real family was like. She managed to accomplish that feat to a certain extent, excelling as the lead idol of B-Komachi and even finding short-term success as an actress.

Ai's perspective on love gradually changed. She convinced herself that lies could be a form of love—a love born from the selfish desires of both sides. Ai longed to find an object for that "love." She wanted to learn how to love by telling her fans that her lies were, in fact, love. This desire deepened after giving birth to her children, though in a different way. She never told them she loved them outright because being disingenuous with them was too terrifying. Nonetheless, she enjoyed her time with them and was especially delighted when the twins gave an impromptu performance with idol lightsticks that stunned an entire venue.

At 15, Ai met and began a secret relationship with Hikaru Kamiki, which resulted in her pregnancy. When she discovered she was pregnant, she immediately broke up with Hikaru. Shocked, Hikaru proposed marriage, but Ai refused because she didn’t want to burden him.

She didn’t truly understand love until she had her twins, Aquamarine and Ruby. After that, she began to care deeply for them. Still, she questioned whether she truly knew how to love anyone else.
