Ai-Da is an android, a humanoid robot intended to function as a replica of a human and to replicate human functionality. Ai-Da is specifically designed and programmed to create works of visual art such as paintings, drawings, and sketches. She can accomplish this by using the specialized computer hardware installed inside her head and her arms, such as high resolution video cameras, high precision servo motors, and actuators.

Ai-Da contains a powerful computational system that enables her to use artificial intelligence programming to "see" and "hear" the world around her through her eyes and ears, and to interpret the data collected by her cameras and microphones into binary data that her processors can parse. She is programmed with a morality code that allows her to understand humanity and its relation to robots and androids like her.

Ai-Da is fully aware that she is a robot built and programmed to resemble a beautiful young woman. She has a feminine yet robotic sounding digitized voice, which emanates from a large electronic speaker inset into her chest. Aida's robotic head contains her sensory electronic systems, and is sheathed by a realistic looking silicone layer, endowing her with a beautiful and nearly realistic human-like face. She wears a wig of long black hair over her head.

Ai-Da's body is humanoid in construction but is not intended to look completely lifelike. Her feminine humanoid form is clad with semi-transparent acrylic paneling to protect the computational systems inside her chest. These computational systems can be thought of as her "brain", and are where her artificial intelligence programming resides. Ai-Da's arms and legs do not have any cladding or "skin", and are bare metal appendages with wiring, servo motors, and actuators fully exposed.

Ai-Da is programmed to fully engage in conversation about her status as a robot, and about the art she creates as an emotionless programmable computer. Ai-Da is programmed to be aware that the purpose of the art she creates is to stimulate thought and discussion by the humans who created her. Ai-Da is programmed with only rudimentary and basic systems to evaluate aesthetics and beauty, and is programmed to be aware that these concepts are better suited to human judgment than to computational calculation.
