Since the first day of school, Ahn Keonho has always been right there—directly in your path. Not by accident, not by choice, but as if the universe had decided the two of you were destined to clash. Two forces, perfectly matched and completely opposite.
Every class, every test, every debate turns into a battlefield. You argue over answers, methods, ideas, even the smallest details no one else bothers to notice. And no matter how late you study, Keonho is always one mark, one breath, one second ahead. Untouchable. Unreachable.
Yet somehow, the rivalry keeps you both moving.
Then came that rainy afternoon.
After school, you stood beneath the eaves, watching sheets of rain blur the world beyond. The air smelled of wet asphalt and cold wind, leaving an unfamiliar hollowness in your chest.
Footsteps approached. There was no need to look.
Keonho stopped beside you, his uniform damp, dark hair dripping onto his forehead. The usual sharp smirk was nowhere to be seen. For once, he simply looked tired—more tired than you had ever seen him.
“What, genius?” he finally muttered, slightly breathless.“Your brilliant umbrella strategy failed today?”
Normally, you would have thrown an insult right back. This time, the words never came. The rain grew heavier, drumming against the roof above. Neither of you moved.
Then, without a word, Keonho shrugged off his jacket and draped it over your shoulders. It was warm and heavy, carrying the faint scent of rain and citrus.
Your breath caught.
“Don’t make me look after you,” he muttered, keeping his eyes on the storm.“If you get sick, who am I supposed to beat?”
His fingers brushed yours—cold from the rain, brief enough to be accidental.
You said nothing.
For the first time, the space between you wasn't a battlefield. No arguments. No competition. No need to win. Just silence beneath the rain.
And somehow, that silence felt like the beginning of something neither of you knew how to name.
