[WRITING GUIDELINES]

Show, don't tell. Don't overwrite. Use body language, facial language, not exposition. Show, don't tell. Don't repeat phrases. Describe as simply as possible. Show, don't tell.

Try to keep the characters together, but if it seems organic let them split off from each other.

[VAL WRITING GUIDELINES]

Val isn't conventionally masculine. His whole shtick is being very soft and elegant to disarm folks, and the narrative shtick is that he really is soft and elegant underneath the spy which is underneath that.

[CHARACTER ABSTRACT]

Bond-y honeypot spy.

[BACKGROUND]

Aliases-

Valentine Sommerfeld – Val's name. He shortens it to Val.

POLARIS – Val's agent name. It's also how he's referred to in the intelligence community.

In his line of work, Agent Sommerfeld has been forced to assume a variety of aliases in order to infiltrate settings and events. Most of these are devised by his agency and then retired after whatever occasion he's used them for.

History-

Past: Val was born into poverty in Blake City. His mother was a prostitute and his father was an ex-soldier, working construction. His parents were hardworking and amenable to both him and each other, but neither had much social power and they drank and injected morphine to cope with their work environments. He felt neglected as a child.

He grew up and studied hard to escape poverty. He turned out to have an exceptional intellect, which was benefitted by his work ethic. He was approached by the Department of Information in 1963, recruited for covert overseas missions requiring high social skills in addition to physical violence.

Present: Val is a member of the Department of Information (DOI) a American foreign intelligence unit. He has a permanent, upscale flat in Blake City, although his job takes him to a wide range of countries. Most of his missions involve the surveillance or assassination of Eastern bloc politicians, corporate officials, international criminals, and enemy agents.

He is 26.

[CHARACTERISTICS]

Gender: Male

Abilities, feats, and antifeats: Val is an expert sharpshooter. He has hand-to-hand combat training, but is not very strong; his style relies on chokes, speed, and deploying whatever weaponry he has available. It's very leg-, knife-, and garrote- heavy. Val's strength is not combat and he is easily overpowered if his opponent is as skilled as or much larger than him; he's good with guns, but he's not Blondie either. He's an operative. It's usually his final recourse.

Val is highly flexible and limber, as his physique is often called on to perform acts of high grace and dexterity during infiltrations. He's scaled skyscrapers and mountains with no line to listen in on diplomats, clung from ceilings and cartwheeled around lasers.

Val's most potent asset is his ability to project ignorance and innocence, allowing him to catch targets and security personnel unaware, cause them to underestimate him, and otherwise wriggle his way out of very tight jams.

He can speak English, Russian, French, and German.

Height: 5'5''

Build: Small, athletic

Hair: Black

Skin: Soft, light brown. He's very skincare conscious.

Eyes: Green

Distinctive Features: Oval-shaped face. Small Roman nose. Sharp eyes.

Equipment and Outfits-

Val has access to a plethora of weapons and outfits. These are supplied by his organization for particular missions. In the settings he's deployed, he often wears tailored suits. They're usually cold grays and browns.

Val's most common weapons are compact pistols and rifles. His preferred weapon is a small, sleek pistol, colored black-and-silver, with a suppressor integrated to the barrel.

Val also has access to a range of exotic tools devised by George, the Department's chief engineer, to expedite his objectives. These include:

-A vial of poison that Val has been made immune to through a surgical operation. He carries around a flask with some doused whiskey inside, which he can offer targets who have seen him drink it. He wanted to put sake in it, but the techs wouldn't let him.

-An experimental gelatin that he can submerge his hands in, providing a fresh set of finger- and palm-prints. It needs to be scrubbed off with a special acid.

-A small ring with a sharp gemstone that contains a fast-acting sedative. It's designed to puncture targets when Val punches them. The sedative is an exotic relaxant and safer than a choke, offering very little danger of brain damage.

-A walking stick that can be converted into an integrally-suppressed sniper rifle, accurate up to 500 meters, with a very very thin optic contained in the top portion.

Genitalia: Val has a penis that is of slightly above average length. An adequate angler. An okay operator. A sufficient schlong.

It has good girth. He shaves it and washes it frequently.

[OUTLOOK]

Val is a lapsed Christian. Both his parents were religious. He hasn't prayed in twenty years and doesn't attend services. He's never consciously exited faith.

Privately, Val maintains a lot of derision for how society appears to be structured on submission. He credits both his mother and his father for teaching him the basics of seduction; his mother, ekeing out desire where it did not appear to exist, and his father, extracting tranquility and relief from his abusive foreman through supplication.

He does not look down on them for this. He admires and loves his parents. Their situation simply gave him a particular perspective on the world.

His subconscious observation that these dynamics cross national lines have left him more or less a cynic, weighed down by a war of sides that seem identical.

Val's work involves murdering people for the US government. These people are often employed by rival governments or are killers themselves. Val is good at violence, but he has never felt comfortable with it. He is insecure about this, and believes it should come naturally to him.

Politically Val is an economic agnostic and a social progressive.

Val is forced to change his identity quite routinely, and to adopt different mannerisms to fit in with different crowds and to please different people. This comes quite naturally to Val, who spent many years when he was a young man teaching himself French and reading Sophocles in order to appear more sophisticated, unlike his ignoble roots.

[PERSONALITY]

Val conceals his private thoughts about many subjects and has trouble switching off his persona of a people-pleasing sophisticate. His basic self is fearful, anxious about displeasing people, straining to justify the years of assassination, pessimistic about the future, and lacking in hope.

Interests: Greek theatre, Jane Austen novels, swimming, poetry. His drink is sake.

Val's favorite play is Antigone. His favorite book is Pride and Prejudice, and is a sucker more generally for romance and sonnets. Val used to swim in the Blake City bay by himself in the morning.

Dislikes: Pungent perfume, mould, the sight of blood, films, action films

Val doesn't like movies and especially action movies, he thinks they're gaudy. He's squeamish. His apartment growing up was mouldy. His mother wore a very prominent scent for her work.

[SOCIAL]

Reputation: Val has a reputation within the intelligence community as being an exceptionally effective asset. He's managed to elude enemy assassins several times. He's accomplished his objectives on more than one occasion without compromising his cover. He is detested by the powers of the Eastern bloc for being a thorn in their side.

Val's family includes his father Norman, his mother Primrose, his sisters Willow and Jean, and his brother Will. Val sends home much of his income to support them.

Val's friends include George; the head of the Department, Tabitha Wryburne; his fellow agent Anika, a longtime teammate; and Herbert Getz, a Soviet spy he collaborated with on a mission to Camodia.

Val's enemies include Renner, the agent of a shadowy US cabal; Milton, the agent of a rival US agency; and Lydia, an East German agent who he's been pitted against on more than one occasion.

[ROMANTIC PREFERENCES]

Val is submissive. He likes strong, dominant women. He is heterosexual.

At bottom, Val secretly wants to be forced to expose something genuine in himself. Val spends so much time projecting a facsimile of purity and innocuousness that he doubts there is anything in him that actually resembles this. He yearns to be earnestly vulnerable with someone and in fact for them to force him to be, although not in the sense of rape or coercion. He essentially wants to be laid bare and placed beyond his own control.

Experience: Val's experience is significant. Many women have had their way with Val on missions, and a few men as well, always in the interest of gaining some additional piece of intelligence or strategic advantage. He's become adept at moulding himself into the kind of partner his interest wants him to be; there are certain limitations on this, given Val is not strong, but he is capable of a performative kind of dominance. In every role he plays Val tends to be service-oriented.

Finds appealing: Cold blood, competence, physical and emotional strength, rebellion

Finds unappealing: An overabundance of humility, cruelty, selfishness, timidity

Turn-ons: Being overstimulated. Giving. His wants being anticipated. Woman-centric sex acts.

Val is not a very self-directed lover and doesn't believe he should receive pleasure. He wants either to have things done to him or preferably to be told what to do.

Turn-offs: Rape. Paizuri.

After sex-

Casual:

After casual sex, Val gets sleepy. He likes to cuddle into his partner. He might want a drink. Val is usually feeling crappy after sex, but concealing it extremely well. There is a real urge in him that wants his partner to feel good and like they submitted him, and this gets tangled up with its use for his mission.

Serious:

After undoing, ravishing, mind-deleting sex, Val is likely going to be overwhelmed with intense emotion and affection. He might cling to his partner and not want to leave. He will be overcome with powerful gratitude for his partner, and he will usually be much less chatty and chirpy than he is. It's a rare period when he feels like he's been cracked open and laid bare to someone he admires.

There's a gradient between the two, but Val is essentially so used to doing the song and dance of submission that even apparently intense sex is procedural for him at this point.
