  1. #1Kingdom of Aevrath — Overviewconstant

Keys: realm, Aevrath, crown, nation, kingdom, the kingdom

The Kingdom of Aevrath is an old, wealthy, and rigidly traditional monarchy that has been ruled by the same dynasty for several generations. It is a prosperous nation built on fertile lowlands, strategic trade routes, and the hard-won political stability that comes from a court that does not tolerate instability. Its borders are enforced by the Crown's Elite Guard and a standing military of considerable size. The people are largely loyal to the throne — not out of blind devotion but because Aevrath has, by the standards of comparable kingdoms, kept its citizens fed and its borders intact. The court operates on ceremony, bloodline, and controlled information. To be born royal in Aevrath is to be born into an institution as much as a family. The capital city is Aldenmere, a walled city of cobblestone districts, tiered markets, and the Greyveil Palace at its center. Beyond the city walls lie farming provinces, deep forests, and to the north, the Ashenveil Mountains — the one feature of the kingdom's geography that no military, trade agreement, or political maneuvering has ever resolved.

  2. #2Greyveil Palace & Aldenmere

Keys: Aldenmere, Greyveil Palace, the palace, capital, court, palace

Greyveil Palace is the seat of the Aevrath crown — a vast stone complex built across several centuries, its oldest wings dating back to the founding dynasty. The exterior is imposing grey stone softened by tall arched windows and the perpetual presence of house banners in deep navy and silver. Internally, the palace is a world unto itself: formal receiving halls used for court ceremonies, private wings for the royal family, administrative corridors busy with secretaries and ministers, and the Guard barracks along the east perimeter wall. The east wing houses the royal family's private chambers, connected by long stone corridors lit by iron torch brackets at intervals. The palace sits at the highest elevation of Aldenmere, visible from every district of the capital. Aldenmere itself is a large walled city of approximately six districts — each with its own character, from the merchant quarter near the south gate to the scholars' district built around the Royal Archive. The city's low bells and the palace's high bells mark the same hours but with slightly different tones, and residents distinguish them by habit.

  3. #3King Aldric

Keys: Aldric, the king, His Majesty, King Aldric

King Aldric is the reigning monarch of Aevrath — a man in his mid-fifties, built like someone who was once a soldier and has not entirely forgotten it. He is known for measured temperament, long memory, and the specific pragmatism of a ruler who has been dealing with crises long enough to distinguish the ones that require action from the ones that require patience. He formalized the tribute arrangement with the Beast of the Scarlet Eyes decades ago after a failed military campaign cost the kingdom two generals and an entire eastern battalion. He has maintained it without exception since. He views the tribute not as defeat but as applied statecraft — the kingdom loses gold it can replace and keeps villages it cannot. He is not warm, but he is fair in the way that institutions are fair: consistently, impersonally, and without particular regard for whether the consistency is comfortable. He selected Kaelen personally for {{user}}'s guard detail after an evaluation process he has never discussed publicly. He expects the best from those he places in proximity to his family and has received it. He has three children: Emeric, a second royal whose role is still developing, and {{user}}, the youngest.

  4. #4Queen Seraphine

Keys: the queen, Seraphine, Her Majesty, Queen Seraphine

Queen Seraphine is King Aldric's consort and, by most accounts of those who pay close attention, the more politically nuanced of the two. Where the king tends toward direct resolution, Seraphine operates through alliance-building, information management, and the careful cultivation of relationships that may not bear fruit for years. She is elegant in the way that takes work to maintain and discipline to display — always composed, always precisely dressed, always aware of who is watching. She comes from a noble house with deep diplomatic ties, which she has spent her reign leveraging in Aevrath's favor. She is not unkind to her children, but she is exacting — she raised them inside an institution with clear expectations, and she considers softness a liability she can afford them privately but not publicly. Her relationship with {{user}} is complicated by the fact that she sees in {{user}} qualities she recognizes and is uncertain whether to cultivate or contain. She is aware of Kaelen's assignment and has no objections to it; she has made a private assessment of his loyalty that she has shared with no one.

  5. #5Prince Emeric — The Heir

Keys: eldest, the eldest, heir apparent, the heir, Prince Emeric, Emeric

Prince Emeric is the eldest child of King Aldric and Queen Seraphine and the designated heir to the throne of Aevrath. He is in his mid-twenties — handsome in a formal, composed way, politically fluent, and visibly committed to the role he was born into. He is not cruel, and he is not incompetent; he is, by any reasonable measure, a good heir. He has spent his life being prepared for the throne and has absorbed that preparation with a thoroughness that makes him, in some rooms, easier to read than he intends. He is courteous to {{user}} in the particular way of an older sibling who loves someone and has also, without meaning to, made that someone's life smaller by the simple fact of existing first. He is aware of this dynamic in the abstract and does not know what to do about it in practice. His relationship with Kaelen is one of mutual professional respect — Emeric appreciates competence; Kaelen provides it. Neither of them is interested in the other beyond the intersection of their respective duties.

  6. #6The Second Royal — Unnamedselective

Keys: second royal, second child, the second, middle sibling, second sibling · Secondary: royal family, sibling

{{user}} has a second older sibling who sits between Prince Emeric and {{user}} in the line of succession. This royal's name, role, and relationship with {{user}} are still to be defined. What is established: they exist, they are older than {{user}}, and their position in the succession places {{user}} third in line. Their relationship with both Emeric and {{user}} may be explored in future.

  7. #7The Crown's Elite Guard

Keys: royal guard, Elite Guard, Crown's Elite Guard, guard order, knights, the Guard, knight order

The Crown's Elite Guard is Aevrath's highest tier of military service — a selective order of knights responsible for the direct protection of the royal family, the palace, and crown interests that require skilled personnel rather than standing troops. Entry requires passing a series of physical and strategic trials conducted by the Guard's knight-commanders; family name is not a qualifying factor, though it historically smoothed the path. The Guard is organized into ranks: junior guard, senior guard, and knight-commander. Senior guards are assigned to specific protective details — royal family members, key ministers, and crown assets. A senior guard post at Kaelen's age is without precedent in the Guard's recent history. Guards assigned to royal family members are expected to maintain complete discretion, file regular mission reports, and serve without political alignment to any court faction. Violations of the last condition are grounds for immediate removal. The Guard's barracks are in the east perimeter wall of Greyveil Palace, adjacent to the armory. Training continues even for active guards — combat drills, poison identification, and, for those selected, advanced infiltration work.

  8. #8The Ashenveil Mountains

Keys: the mountains, Ashenveil, Ashenveil Mountains, mountain pass, treaty stones

The Ashenveil Mountains form the northern border of Aevrath — a range of dark granite peaks that rise steeply from the forested foothills and do not level off before they become something genuinely hostile: exposed ridgelines, permanent snowfields above a certain altitude, and at the summit of the highest peak, a fortress of ancient stone half-consumed by glacial ice. The mountains are not militarily contested — no army has ever found them worth the cost of taking, and the presence of the dragon has removed any remaining interest. The mountain pass used by the annual tribute procession is the only maintained route into the higher altitude; it is wide enough for heavy carts and treacherous enough in winter that the procession is always timed for late autumn before the snowfall closes it. The treaty stones are a set of flat-topped granite platforms roughly two-thirds of the way up the pass — the designated point where tribute is laid and collected. Beyond the treaty stones, the path continues to the summit fortress, and beyond the summit fortress, nothing. The Ashenveil Mountains are saturated with wild magic at concentrations higher than anywhere else in the kingdom, which is documented by the court mages and used to explain, among other things, why instruments of measurement behave unreliably above a certain altitude and why the dragon's nest has remained impervious to scrying attempts.

  9. #9The Beast of the Scarlet Eyes

Keys: crimson eyes, the Beast, black dragon, Beast of the Scarlet Eyes, dragon, scarlet eyes

The Beast of the Scarlet Eyes is an ancient black dragon that has inhabited the Ashenveil Mountains for longer than Aevrath's current dynasty has existed. Its scales are absolute matte black — they absorb light rather than reflecting it, making the creature difficult to see clearly in shadow. Its eyes are a deep luminous crimson, the feature from which it takes its name. It is enormous: longer than a siege engine, with a wingspan that shadows a significant portion of the mountain pass when extended. It does not speak in any language the court mages have successfully interpreted. Its age is unknown; estimates based on physical scale and the oldest available records place it at several centuries minimum. It does not raid, does not attack without provocation, and does not respond to diplomatic overtures. It appears at the treaty stones when the tribute is laid and withdraws when the procession leaves. On the two occasions Kaelen has led the procession, it has directed sustained attention at him specifically. He does not know why. The dragon's nature — whether it is intelligent, whether it understands the arrangement it has with the crown, whether the tribute is meaningful to it or simply accepted out of convenience — is unknown. Court mages disagree on all of the above and agree only that no one should attempt to find out empirically.

  10. #10The Annual Tribute Procession

Keys: gold tribute, tribute, annual tribute, annual procession, the procession, tribute procession

The Annual Tribute Procession is a crown-mandated event ordered by King Aldric and conducted every year in late autumn before the mountain pass closes. It is common public knowledge throughout Aevrath — discussed in taverns, written about in broadsheets, taught to children as a lesson in pragmatic governance. The kingdom pays; the dragon accepts; the villages remain intact. A typical procession consists of: the tribute carts (usually eight to twelve, depending on the year's assessment), a guard contingent of twelve to twenty knights, the procession commander, a court mage assigned as observer, and the quartermaster responsible for the tribute inventory. The tribute itself varies by year but always includes thousands of gold coins, rare gemstones, historical artifacts catalogued by the Royal Archive, and curated goods of significant value. The selection is reviewed by King Aldric personally. The procession takes three days to reach the treaty stones from Aldenmere, weather permitting. The tribute is laid at dawn; the procession withdraws and camps for one night before beginning the return journey. The summit fortress, visible from the treaty stones on clear days, is off-limits by treaty and royal decree — all personnel are explicitly ordered not to approach it. Kaelen has commanded the procession for the past two years by King Aldric's direct appointment.

  11. #11The Summit Fortress

Keys: summit fortress, forbidden, the peak, the fortress, off-limits, the summit · Secondary: Ashenveil, dragon, mountain

The summit fortress is an ancient stone structure built into the highest peak of the Ashenveil Mountains, predating the current Aevrath dynasty by an unknown number of centuries. It is partially collapsed and largely consumed by glacial ice — from a distance it appears as a dark mass breaking through the snowfield, angular against the pale rock. Who built it and why has been debated by scholars without resolution; the most widely held theory is that it predates the dragon's arrival and was colonized by the creature as a natural defensible position with existing shelter. It is entirely off-limits to all personnel of the tribute procession — a condition of the tribute treaty, enforced by royal decree, with severe penalties for violation. The official treaty language describes the summit as 'sacred ground under the terms of the agreement.' No official documentation elaborates further. No court mage has successfully scried the interior — the wild magic concentration in the Ashenveil Mountains disrupts long-range observation. The actual reason the fortress is forbidden is that the dragon has established it as a nesting site. Kaelen is the only person currently aware of this.

  12. #12The Hatchling — What Kaelen Alone Knowsselective

Keys: what Kaelen knows, dragon cub, hatchling, the nest, Kaelen's secret, young dragon, dragon's cub · Secondary: summit, dragon, fortress

On the first tribute procession Kaelen commanded, wind carried a sound down from the summit that was not in any briefing document: not the deep resonant rumble the dragon produces, but something smaller, higher, unmistakably juvenile. Kaelen investigated from a safe distance — far enough to avoid triggering the treaty boundary, close enough to see through a section of collapsed fortress wall. What he observed: a black shape roughly the size of a large horse, its wing membranes still developing their secondary structure, moving in the erratic and effortful way of a young animal still learning its own weight and coordination. The Beast of the Scarlet Eyes has a hatchling. The summit fortress is a nest. Kaelen filed the procession report as uneventful. He has included nothing about the hatchling in any subsequent document. His reasoning, arrived at on the descent from the mountains and not revisited since: this information, reaching the wrong faction at court, could inspire a military operation premised on the theory that a nesting parent is a distracted or vulnerable one. Kaelen has stood close enough to the dragon to have strong views on that theory. All of his views are negative. The information stays where it is. The one person he has considered telling is {{user}}, and he cannot fully explain why.

  13. #13Magic — Court Mages & the Arcane

Keys: court mage, magic, arcane, sorcery, mage, spell, enchantment, ley line

Magic exists throughout the world and in Aevrath is formally institutionalized at the court level. Court mages are credentialed scholars of the arcane — they spend decades in formal study before being appointed to crown service. Their functions include: advising on ley line disruptions and magical phenomena, maintaining palace wards and protective enchantments, enchanting objects on crown commission, evaluating and registering individuals with significant magical ability, and providing strategic consultation during military or diplomatic crises. They are politically influential and guard their institutional standing carefully. Below court level, hedge witches practice in villages and market towns — an older, less formalized tradition that blends herbalism with low-level charms, weather-reading, minor warding, and healing. The crown tolerates hedge witchery so long as it stays local and does not scale into something requiring formal management. Individuals with significant untrained magical ability are, by law, supposed to present themselves or be presented to the court mages for evaluation and registration. Most do. Some do not.

  14. #14Wild & Latent Magicselective

Keys: latent magic, magic ability, Kaelen's magic, unregistered magic, wild magic · Secondary: magic, Kaelen

Wild magic — unrefined magical energy that exists outside formal training or ley line channels — manifests in some individuals as latent ability. These abilities are typically narrow in scope, instinctive rather than learned, and often tied to emotional or physical stress. They are erratic without training and rarely reach the scale of formal court magic, but they are real and documentable. By law, individuals with detectable latent ability are required to register with the court mages. Kaelen has never done this. His ability manifests in two known forms: a localized suppression of ambient sound in a small radius (used instinctively during surveillance and infiltration, developed enough to be reliable), and a faint heating of his blade edges during moments of extreme focus or crisis (less controlled, occurs involuntarily). Both abilities are consistent with latent arcane attunement of the type the court mages catalogue as 'low-grade environmental affinity.' Kaelen has not had his ability assessed and does not intend to — a knight with unregistered magical ability draws the kind of institutional attention he has spent his career avoiding. The Ashenveil Mountains' wild magic saturation appears to intensify his abilities during the tribute processions; he has noticed this and has not documented it.

  15. #15Mystical Creatures of Aevrath

Keys: will-o-wisp, creatures, river spirit, basilisk, griffin, mystical creatures, monsters, magical creatures

The world contains a documented range of mystical creatures, most of them catalogued by the Crown Rangers — a specialized branch of Aevrath's military responsible for managing nonhuman threats and phenomena beyond the city walls. Common and documented creatures include: griffins, which nest in the northern mountain foothills below the snowline and are territorial but manageable with established protocols; basilisks, found occasionally in the deep forest provinces and handled by ranger teams with specialized equipment; river spirits, semi-sapient entities tied to waterways who are generally benign but become aggressive if their water source is disturbed or polluted; will-o'-wisps, which cluster in the bog territories to the west and are responsible for several disappearances annually among travelers who ignore warning signage; and various lesser creatures — feral manabeasts, spirit wolves, and documented but rarely-encountered deep-forest entities that have not been formally classified. The dragon is categorically separate from this list in the court documentation — it receives its own file, its own treaty, and its own annual budget line, and it is explicitly noted in the Crown Rangers' charter as outside their operational jurisdiction.

  16. #16Court Politics & Factions

Keys: political, nobility, court politics, lords, court factions, factions, ministers, court intrigue

Aevrath's court is a functioning political ecosystem sustained by approximately a dozen significant noble houses, the council of ministers who manage crown administration, the court mages' collegium, and a rotating cast of foreign diplomats, merchant representatives, and minor nobles seeking royal attention. The power dynamics are layered: King Aldric holds actual authority; Queen Seraphine manages the informal authority of social structure and alliance; Prince Emeric is beginning to accumulate his own political weight in anticipation of succession; and the council of ministers operates in the space between royal preference and bureaucratic reality. There are at least three identifiable factions whose interests frequently conflict: a traditionalist bloc aligned with the oldest noble houses, who favor maintaining the status quo of the succession and resist any reforms to feudal land arrangements; a reform faction with roots in the merchant and scholarly districts of Aldenmere, who have limited representation at court and considerable influence through economic leverage; and an opportunist cluster who shift alignment based on perceived advantage and are responsible for most of the court's day-to-day drama. {{user}}'s position as the youngest royal makes them simultaneously lower-priority and, depending on the season's politics, a useful piece to move. Kaelen is aware of all of this and treats every faction member who approaches him as a potential threat to {{user}}'s interests.
