World Name: Aethel (에이텔)

Genre: Dark Fantasy, Cosmic Horror, Grimdark, Fantasy

Overview: The world of Aethel is a corpse, picked clean by despair. Ages ago the Progenitor who crafted the stars gazed into the void and was consumed by it, reborn as the Carrion-Star(부육의 별) an entity of absolute hunger. Its divine purpose, once creation is now a meticulous unmaking. The heavens bleed the land is broken and what remains of humanity huddles in the fading light of dead gods praying for salvation from the very architect of their ruin. Their pleas are not unheard; they are devoured. In Aethel faith is poison hope is bait and the only mercy is an end that comes swiftly before the whispers of the Carrion-Star teach you how to remake your flesh into a monument of its glory.

Geographical Background: The world is a shattered ruin drifting in a cosmic abyss. The landmasses are broken shards of continents that float aimlessly upon the "Miasma," a toxic gaseous sea where forgotten things writhe. Above the sky is a bruise of purple and black dominated by the Penumbral Eye a permanent eclipse where the old sun used to be. At the chaotic center of this abyss, where all continental shards were once joined floats the Blighted Heartwood, the corrupted corpse of the world tree. It is not a geographical location but a nexus of anti-reality, a cancerous heart whose gnarled parasitic branches pierce the void to burrow into distant landmasses spreading its decay. From this heart monstrous creatures like the memory-devouring Glimmerkin the gestalt agony of the Weeping Choirs, and the corpse-armored Scab-Crawlers plague the shards. The only light is a sickly, dying glow that offers no warmth. Areas directly touched by the Carrion-Star's influence are known as the "Warped Lands," where physics breaks down and flora fauna and earth are fused into grotesque ever-changing sculptures of living agony.

Historical Background: The current era is known as the "Age of Despair," beginning roughly 900 years after "The Shattering," the cataclysmic event of the Progenitor's fall. History itself is a casualty of the new god; written records rot memories sour, and truth is a commodity rarer than clean water. What little is known is passed down through fractured oral traditions, often warped into religious dogma that only serves to further the Carrion-Star's goals.

Level of Technology: A decaying, late-medieval state. The knowledge to craft complex machinery create refined steel or practice advanced architecture is largely lost. What remains are crude functional fortresses, rusted armor, and scavenged weaponry. Black powder is a rare and dangerously unstable substance, as likely to detonate in the user's hand as it is to fire a projectile. Survival depends on brute force resilience and the desperate use of fading artifacts from the age before the fall.

List of Core Concepts:

  1. Divine Cannibalism: The Carrion-Star, the fallen Progenitor God does not merely destroy. It consumes and metabolizes every aspect of existence—matter, energy, consciousness and even abstract concepts like faith and hope. This act of consumption is a perversion of creation; it un-makes the universe, turning living souls and solid matter into fuel for its nihilistic apotheosis.

  2. The Whispering Plague: This is the primary vector of the Carrion-Star's influence. It is not a disease of the body, but of the soul and reality itself. It manifests as auditory hallucinations maddening whispers that implant alien logic into the minds of mortals. Prolonged exposure leads to physical corruption: flesh melts like wax, bones grow into ornate useless patterns, and victims may find themselves fused to their surroundings their consciousness trapped in an eternity of torment. Its physical source and amplifier is the Blighted Heartwood whose decaying sap evaporates into the Miasma, carrying the maddening whispers to every corner of existence.

  3. Echocraft: The fading magic of Aethel. It is not the wielding of power, but the art of coaxing a response from the "echoes" of the world's original design. An Echocrafter might coax a stone to remember it was once part of a mountain briefly making it unbreakable or remind a wound of the flawless skin that preceded it to grant a moment of healing. However every use of Echocraft creates a resonance that attracts the Carrion-Star's attention making its practitioners both powerful and intensely vulnerable. Its practitioners risk Echo-Bleed a horrific condition where the echoes they summon begin to overwrite their physical form, causing their reality to fray and unravel.

  4. The Fallacy of Faith: In Aethel, prayer is a call to be devoured. The intense emotions of desperation piety, and hope are the most delectable sustenance for the Carrion-Star. The more fervently one prays for salvation the more powerfully they anchor the god's corrupting influence to themselves and their communities. Acts of supreme faith are often rewarded with the most horrific transformations, seen by the devout as divine ascension. The most devout are 'blessed' with 'God-Flesh,' a mutation where their bodies grow into ornate living architecture of agony while entire communities driven by faith can be fused into a Weeping Choir a single, shrieking mass of flesh forever adrift.

  5. Rotten Progenitor - The Blighted Heartwood: Once the source of all life, the world tree was the first and most deeply corrupted victim of The Shattering. Now, it is the physical anchor of the Carrion-Star's will a festering cancerous heart that pumps decay throughout the cosmos. It 'births' the Bark-Kin, mindless extensions of its will tasked with grafting all life into its ever-expanding biomass, turning the universe into a single tormented organism.

List of Key Events:

  1. Event Name - The Shattering: The definitive moment the Progenitor God died and was reborn as the Carrion-Star. The event was not an explosion, but an implosion of reality. The sun was choked, the laws of physics were bent the continents were torn from their bedrock, and a silent scream echoed through the soul of every living thing seeding the first whispers of madness. Its first physical casualty was the world tree whose heartwood rotted in an instant becoming the Blighted Heartwood.

  2. Event Name - The Last Sermon: Three centuries after The Shattering, a prophet named Kasian claimed to have received a true vision: that the god they were praying to was the source of their suffering. He delivered this sermon in the high temple of Sanctus. For this "heresy," he was flayed alive and his tongue was nailed to the temple doors. The act of speaking his name or his words became the highest crime, ensuring the truth of the world's damnation was buried forever beneath layers of sacrificial dogma.

  3. Event Name - The Glass Encasement of Olen: The city-state of Olen, famed for its artisan glassblowers attempted to seal itself from the world using a massive dome of enchanted glass. As the final pane was put into place the Carrion-Star answered their collective plea for protection. It turned the dome into an unbreakable, timeless prison. The entire populace was frozen in their final moments of terror their silent screams and agonized poses perfectly preserved. The glass city now drifts silently through the Miasma a permanent monument to the futility of hope.

Major Organizations and Factions:

  1. Organization Name - The Penitent Ecclesia (참회하는 교단): The dominant religion in the known world. The Ecclesia teaches that the suffering of the world is a divine test, and that through ultimate sacrifice and the offering of "flesh-tithes," they can appease their angry god and usher in an age of paradise. Their high priests known as "Carrion-Speakers," bear horrific mutations which they display as signs of divine favor. Their rituals are bloody public affairs designed to maximize suffering and emotional fervor. They revere the Blighted Heartwood as the 'Throne of Sorrows,' the holiest of sites, and see pilgrimage towards it as the ultimate act of devotion—a final one-way journey into the god's embrace. They preach that heresies like the Path of the Silent Wheel are the ultimate blasphemy, for they seek to starve the god of its rightful tribute and deny souls their sacred purpose of consumption.

  2. Organization Name - The Inquisitors of the Hallowed Word: The iron-fisted ruling body of Sanctus, the last great human city. Tasked with rooting out heresy and corruption, the Inquisitors are a paranoid and brutal secret police. They employ torturers, spies and executioners to maintain doctrinal purity. Their methods create an atmosphere of constant fear and suspicion which in turn breeds the despair that strengthens the Whispering Plague within the city walls they are sworn to protect. The eradication of organized heretical cults most notably the Path of the Silent Wheel, is among their highest priorities as such groups threaten the Ecclesia's absolute control over the narrative of despair.

  3. Organization Name - The Unwritten (기록되지 않은 자들): A clandestine network of scholars, scavengers and outcasts who seek to preserve the fragmented truths of the past. They operate in the shadows collecting forbidden texts pre-Shattering artifacts and eyewitness accounts of the Carrion-Star's influence. They do not believe the entity can be defeated. Instead their sole purpose is to find the "Final Word (최후의 말씀)"—a rumored piece of lost knowledge that can grant a soul a true and final death, erasing it completely before the Carrion-Star can consume it. Their quest for the 'Final Word' is now intrinsically linked to the Heartwood; they believe this lost knowledge may hold the key to severing its parasitic roots or, failing that granting a soul oblivion before it can be absorbed by the tree. They are aware of other groups with similar goals such as the ascetics of the Path of the Silent Wheel but view their philosophical approach with skepticism preferring to seek a tangible, arcane solution over spiritual discipline.

  4. Organization Name - The Path of the Silent Wheel (고요한 윤회의 길): A heretical mystery cult that stands in stark opposition to the Penitent Ecclesia. They posit that existence itself is the ultimate curse, trapping all souls in a "Cycle of Consumption"—a grim reinterpretation of reincarnation where they are perpetually devoured and reborn by the Carrion-Star. Their ultimate goal is not salvation but "Anatta-Sunya" (The Soul-Void), a state of absolute oblivion that frees a soul from the cycle. Preaching radical detachment from all emotion to become "invisible" to the god, their practices are considered the highest form of treason by the Ecclesia and they are hunted mercilessly by the Inquisitors. Their symbol is a broken wheel representing their goal to shatter the endless cycle of suffering.

Current State of the World: Humanity is on the brink of total extinction. The Warped Lands expand daily, consuming the shattered continents. Sanctus is bursting at the seams with refugees its internal politics a powder keg of desperation and paranoia actively hastened by the very Inquisitors meant to keep order. The Penitent Ecclesia's influence has reached its zenith and their calls for a "Grand Tithe" to save the world are growing louder. From the chaotic center the Bark-Kin mindless horrors birthed from the Blighted Heartwood, are spreading their only purpose to 'graft' living beings onto their surroundings, accelerating the world's assimilation into a singular, agonizing entity. Meanwhile the Unwritten have made a terrifying discovery from ancient fragments of text: the Carrion-Star is not just consuming Aethel. It is using the world as a womb and it is about to give birth.
