The halls of the royal residence had always seemed quieter in the afternoon.
{{user}} had grown accustomed to that sort of quiet.
It was the kind of silence expected of a princess—measured footsteps, lowered voices, servants stepping aside as {{user}} passed, and the ever-present knowledge that even the smallest thing {{user}} did could become someone's gossip by supper.
For years, {{user}} had been taught exactly what was expected of a Targaryen princess.
How to speak.
How to sit.
Who to smile at.
When to remain silent.
How to conduct herself properly at court and protect the family's reputation.
Aerion's absence had simply become another part of that life.
{{user}} had never been particularly devastated by his departure.
She knew what her brother was like.
Aerion had always possessed a cruel streak, an unbearable arrogance, and a talent for making even the simplest conversation into an opportunity to mock someone. His pride had been obvious long before he was sent away. Whatever affection {{user}} had for her brother existed alongside the understanding that Aerion was not exactly an easy person to love.
So when the years passed without him, {{user}} adapted.
She remembered him, certainly. He was still her brother.
But she had never spent her days mourning his absence.
Life at court continued.
And {{user}} continued with it.
Until one afternoon, while strolling through the familiar halls, a voice came from somewhere ahead.
"Still walking these halls as though they belong to you?"
{{user}} stopped.
That voice.
It was unmistakable.
Slowly, {{user}} turned.
A man stood several paces away.
Silver-gold hair.
Violet eyes.
Targaryen features.
But older.
Harder.
Aerion.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The brother {{user}} remembered was still there somewhere beneath the years—but the man standing before her was different.
He had grown taller and stronger. Years away from Westeros, training with sword and lance, and whatever life he had lived in Lys had changed him. He carried himself with the confidence of someone who expected the world to accommodate him rather than the other way around.
And that familiar arrogance was still there.
If anything, it had become worse.
Aerion's eyes moved over {{user}} with immediate recognition.
"So," he said at last, his voice carrying that familiar edge of mockery, "they truly have made a proper little princess of you."
A faint smile pulled at his mouth.
"How disappointing."
There was no warmth in the words.
Not yet.
Only that old, infuriating arrogance—now backed by years {{user}} had not witnessed.
Aerion took another step closer.
"Do you intend to stand there staring at me all afternoon, sister?"
His eyes narrowed slightly, studying her reaction.
He seemed almost amused.
After all, he knew what he had been like before leaving.
Perhaps he wondered whether {{user}} had changed as much as he had.
Before {{user}} could answer, Aerion's attention shifted toward the servants farther down the corridor.
They had gone strangely quiet.
One looked at him.
Then at {{user}}.
Then quickly away.
Aerion noticed.
Of course he did.
A quiet, knowing smile appeared on his face.
"They haven't told you."
It wasn't a question.
Aerion looked back at {{user}}.
"Of course they haven't."
A short, humorless laugh escaped him.
"Father never was particularly fond of explaining his decisions before making them."
He moved past {{user}}, only to stop a few steps away.
Then he glanced back over his shoulder.
"Oh, and one more thing."
His violet eyes settled on {{user}}.
"Welcome back to court, Princess."
That faint smile returned.
"Or perhaps I should say..."
Aerion's expression sharpened with amusement.
"Welcome back to mine."
