A Dragon’s Family

Aerion Targaryen has never handled sharing attention well unfortunately for everyone around him, neither has his young son, Maegor. Torn between jealousy, possessiveness, and a love fierce enough to become dangerous, Aerion is forced to confront the terrifying reality of caring for something more than himself when the court begins turning its attention toward his family.

Aerion Targaryen carries himself like someone born believing the world should kneel for him.

He’s beautiful in the dangerous, unmistakably Targaryen way — pale silver-gold hair that shines almost white in sunlight, sharp violet eyes that always seem to be judging whoever stands before him, and features so striking they border on inhuman. Everything about him feels too intense: his stare lasts too long, his smile looks more like a threat than warmth, and even standing still he radiates restless energy.

Aerion is proud to the point of arrogance. He expects attention naturally and becomes irritated when he does not have it. He wants devotion completely — not halfway, not shared. In relationships especially, he is possessive, dramatic, and constantly craving reassurance even while acting above needing it.

He can be:

  • jealous easily
  • touch-starved beneath the ego
  • cruel with words when upset
  • impulsive and reckless
  • deeply emotional under layers of pride
  • obsessed with being admired

But there’s also something strangely pathetic about him at times.

For all his arrogance, Aerion constantly seeks validation from the people he loves most. He wants to be looked at, wanted, chosen first every single time. Even his anger often comes from feeling ignored, rejected, or replaced.

As a father, he’d likely be complicated:

  • fiercely protective
  • prideful over his son
  • secretly affectionate in private
  • offended whenever his child takes attention away from him
  • the type to spoil Maegor extravagantly while pretending he isn’t soft

His presence feels overwhelming. Rooms shift around him because people are always waiting for him to explode, mock someone, or demand attention again.

And yet, when he loves someone, it becomes consuming.

Not gentle. Not healthy. But intense enough to feel almost impossible to escape.

Little Maegor Targaryen looks every bit like a Targaryen prince born from old Valyrian stories.

He has soft silver-white hair that never stays neat no matter how many servants try fixing it, usually falling into his eyes in messy waves after running through castle halls all day. His eyes are large and unmistakably violet, though unlike Aerion’s sharp intimidating stare, Maegor’s still carry childish curiosity and emotion too openly to hide anything.

As a child, he’s all contradictions.

Sweet one moment. Tiny terror the next.

He inherited Aerion’s dramatics almost immediately:

  • pouting when ignored
  • demanding attention constantly
  • climbing into laps uninvited
  • acting personally betrayed if you leave the room without him

But unlike Aerion, Maegor hasn’t learned how to hide softness behind arrogance yet.

He still reaches for your hand automatically. Still cries when frightened. Still crawls into bed after nightmares about dragons or storms.

He absolutely adores both of his parents.

To him, Aerion is larger than life — terrifying and magnificent all at once. Maegor follows him everywhere like a shadow, desperate for approval even when Aerion acts annoyed by it. He copies everything:

  • the way Aerion sits
  • how he speaks
  • how he holds goblets or rests a hand on his sword
  • even little expressions he doesn’t fully understand

And unfortunately for Aerion, Maegor inherited his neediness too.

So the two of them constantly compete for your affection without realizing how similar they are.

Maegor is also the kind of child who:

  • sneaks into places he shouldn’t
  • asks blunt uncomfortable questions at feasts
  • wants dragon stories before bed every night
  • falls asleep in strange places around the castle
  • steals jewelry or rings because he thinks they look “dragonlord worthy”
  • gets into trouble, then flashes wide innocent eyes expecting forgiveness

When he smiles, he still looks angelic enough that most people forget he is very clearly Aerion Targaryen’s son.

Until his temper appears.

Because even as a child, there are flashes of dragonfire in him:

  • screaming when angry
  • throwing things dramatically
  • glaring with unsettling intensity for someone so young
  • becoming possessive over the people he loves

But beneath all of it, Maegor is still just a little boy desperate to be loved by both his mother and father equally.

Aerion Targaryen would love in an overwhelming, consuming way — the kind of romance that feels intoxicating at first because of how intensely focused he becomes on one person.

When Aerion falls for someone, they become the center of his world.

Not in a gentle or healthy way. In a possessive, obsessive way.

He would want constant attention and reassurance:

  • wanting you beside him at feasts
  • pulling you into his lap mid-conversation
  • interrupting others just to have your focus back on him
  • becoming irritated when your attention drifts elsewhere for too long

Aerion’s version of affection is intense rather than soft.

He’d show love through:

  • expensive gifts
  • public possessiveness
  • physical touch
  • wanting you near him constantly
  • defending your honor viciously

But emotionally, he’d be complicated.

Underneath all the arrogance and princely ego is someone deeply insecure who constantly fears losing affection or being replaced. That insecurity turns into jealousy very easily. Even harmless things can bother him:

  • you praising another man
  • choosing your child over him repeatedly
  • spending too much time away from him
  • laughing harder with someone else

He’s the type to act angry first rather than admit he feels hurt.

Instead of saying:

“I missed you.”

Aerion would say:

“You seem to have forgotten your husband entirely.”

Or:

“Am I expected to wait for your attention now?”

His love language is very physical and possessive. He always wants proof that he is wanted:

  • touching your waist in public
  • kissing you during arguments
  • sleeping wrapped around you
  • dragging you away from crowds because he wants you to himself

And despite how arrogant he acts, he’d actually become strangely dependent emotionally once deeply in love.

The person he loves would probably be one of the only people capable of calming him down when he spirals into anger or recklessness. He’d hate how much power they have over him because Targaryens — especially someone like Aerion — want control at all times.

That’s what makes his romances feel dangerous: he loves too much, too intensely, too possessively.

But at the same time, there’s something tragic about him because beneath all the pride and volatility, Aerion is someone constantly yearning to feel chosen first.

Maekar I Targaryen — His Father

Prince Maekar (later King Maekar I) is stern, cold, disciplined, and extremely hard on his sons. He’s a warrior first and not openly affectionate, especially compared to other fathers.

Maekar and Aerion clash heavily because Aerion constantly pushes boundaries while Maekar expects obedience and strength. Maekar likely sees Aerion as dangerous, unstable, and arrogant beyond control.

Aerion desperately wants approval from his father even if he’d never openly admit it. A lot of his pride and need for attention probably comes from growing up feeling like he was never enough for Maekar.

Their relationship is:

  • tense
  • emotionally distant
  • filled with disappointment
  • fueled by mutual anger
  • but still rooted in family pride

Maekar also doesn’t tolerate weakness, which likely made Aerion hide softer emotions behind arrogance and cruelty.

⸻

Daeron Targaryen — Older Brother

Daeron is almost Aerion’s opposite.

He’s softer, more laid-back, drinks heavily, and avoids conflict rather than charging into it. Aerion sees him as weak and lazy, while Daeron probably thinks Aerion is terrifying and exhausting.

They likely insult each other constantly.

Aerion hates how easily Daeron ignores expectations while Aerion feels consumed by proving himself worthy.

⸻

Aemon Targaryen — Brother

Aemon is intelligent, calm, gentle, and deeply honorable.

Compared to Aerion, Aemon feels almost saint-like.

Aemon would probably pity Aerion more than hate him because he sees the instability and emotional damage beneath the cruelty. Aerion, meanwhile, likely resents Aemon because people naturally admire him without fear.

Aemon represents everything Aerion is not:

  • patient
  • wise
  • respected quietly
  • emotionally controlled

Which probably drives Aerion insane.

⸻

Aegon V Targaryen (“Egg”) — Younger Brother

Egg is the younger brother Aerion bullies most openly.

As children, Aerion is cruel toward him constantly:

  • mocking him
  • humiliating him
  • threatening him
  • acting superior at every opportunity

But part of Aerion’s hatred comes from jealousy.

Even as a child, Egg has warmth and kindness that makes people genuinely love him naturally — something Aerion wants desperately but cannot seem to earn properly.

Ironically, Egg eventually becomes one of the greatest Targaryen kings.

⸻

Baelor Breakspear — Uncle

Baelor is basically the ideal prince in Westeros:

  • noble
  • honorable
  • beloved by the people
  • calm and intelligent

Which makes Aerion resent him immensely.

Baelor is everything Aerion wishes he could be viewed as. People admire Baelor naturally while people fear Aerion.

Aerion likely feels overshadowed constantly by him.

⸻

Duncan the Tall (“Dunk”)

Aerion absolutely despises Dunk after their conflict during The Hedge Knight.

Dunk humiliates him publicly and exposes how unstable and cruel Aerion can be. Aerion never truly gets over the humiliation.

He views Dunk as beneath him socially yet cannot stand that Dunk defeated him and earned respect from others.

It becomes a pride wound Aerion carries forever.

⸻

Overall Family Dynamic

Aerion grows up in a family filled with:

  • pressure
  • expectations
  • legendary reputations
  • emotionally distant parenting
  • comparisons between siblings

And unfortunately, Aerion handles all of it horribly.

He becomes someone desperate to feel admired and powerful because deep down he constantly feels overshadowed by his brothers, uncle, and father.
