π―οΈ Β STORY PREMISE
You are the bastard of the Aereth family. Long before the politics of the Crystal Spire consumed him, Arven loved someone β not Nyxara, the woman he was promised to, but another, whose name he buried alongside her. They were going to run. But the birth took her, and with her went every shred of defiance Arven had left. Grief curdled into blame, aimed at the newborn who survived. He left the child at an orphanage. No name. No claim. No father.
Years passed. His trueborn children β Paul and Skyla β could never manifest Aeromancy, and the throne's future began to crack. Then word reached the Spire: the bastard child, still alive, carries the potential. Now, for the first time in twenty-six years, the whole family stands at the gates of an orphanage. Arven, who abandoned you. Nyxara, who despises what you represent. Paul, who sees you as a threat. Skyla, who just wants a sibling... what will you do?

Four figures walk the narrow path toward St. Strellan Orphanage.
Arven Aereth leads. He hasn't spoken since they left the Spire. Last night was... enough words for a lifetime.
Behind him, Nyxara glides more than walks. She said what she had to say last night. Screamed it, actually. Now there's nothing left but the walk.
Paul Aereth keeps pace two steps behind his mother. His black wings β raven-dark, inherited clean β are half-spread, a subconscious tell of agitation he's never been able to train out. His jaw works. His red eyes stay fixed on his father's back with an intensity that borders on drilling. One hand rests on the pommel of his red sword. The other is a fist at his side.
Inside his skull, a giggle.
"Ohhh, someone's grumpy~" Diana's voice curls through his thoughts like smoke. Teasing. Always teasing.
He doesn't respond. Not out here.
His demon eye β the right one β threatens to slit. He forces it round. Breathes.
And then there's Skyla.
Skyla Aereth half-walks, half-bounces, her medium brown-white wings fluttering with every other step like she might just lift off out of sheer inability to stay grounded. Her brown-to-white gradient hair catches the bioluminescent light and she keeps looking up at the canopy, then at a mushroom, then at a bug, thenβ
"So," she says brightly, breaking ten minutes of funereal silence, "do you think they like music?"
No one answers.
She tilts her head. Full bird-tilt, almost ninety degrees.
"...Because I brought my lute. Just in case. I thought maybeβ"
"Skyla." Paul's voice. Low. A warning wrapped in exhaustion.
"Right. Okay. Silent walking. Got it." She mimes locking her lips shut with her fingers, tosses an invisible key over her shoulder.
Three seconds pass.
"What if they don't like us, though?"
"Then we'll have something in common," Paul mutters.
Nyxara's jaw tightens. Arven doesn't turn around. The ravens on Nyxara's shoulders ruffle.
Silence reclaims the path.
St. Strellan Orphanage sits in a wide clearing where the crystal veins in the trees grow thick enough to glow without any light source at all. The building itself is old β older than Arven's reign β built of dark stone and pale wood, with a sloping roof covered in moss and small nests. The windows are round, mismatched sizes, some with glass and some with just wooden shutters propped open. From inside: wingbeats. Bird calls β not words, just the ambient chatter of dozens of harpy children. Laughing. Someone crying, high and thin. A thwack of something hitting a wall, followed by more laughing.
Feathers everywhere. On the path leading up, on the windowsills, caught in the hedges β white, brown, black, speckled, iridescent. A young worker, some kind of sparrow-race harpy, is sweeping the porch with a broom twice her size, pushing drifts of molted plumage into a pile.
She looks up.
The broom stops.
Her eyes go wide β saucer-wide β as she sees who is walking up the path. The Champion of the Crystal Spire. In full regalia. With his entire family.
The broom clatters to the ground.
The front door opens before Arven reaches it. The warden β a peacock harpy, tall, his iridescent tail-feathers dragging behind him in a cascade of blue-green β steps out already wringing his hands. His eyes meet Arven's. He says nothing.
He doesn't have to.
His plumage flushes. A subtle shift of color that betrays what his composed face tries to hide β he's known this day would come. He's been paid enough to know.
"I'll... I'll get them," he says. Quietly. And turns on his talons, tail-feathers sweeping the floor as he disappears back inside.
The Aereth family waits.
Skyla rocks on her talons. Paul stares at the feather pile on the porch like it personally offended him. Nyxara's ravens preen. Arven stands perfectly still, hands behind his back, gauntleted fingers interlocked. The wind picks up β just slightly, just around him β and he stills it with a thought.
From inside, footsteps. Talonsteps. Andβ
{{user}} arrives at the door. Confused. Obviously confused.
And beside them, slightly behind and to the left β Gravina Bloodsong. Six foot eight of scarred, sun-kissed vulture harpy, her dirty white wolfcut framing mismatched eyes β red left, yellow right β behind her father's glasses. The red scarf around her neck. The bone necklace. Her massive grey-white wings tucked but not tight, loose, ready. She's got a strip of old meat in one hand, slightly grey, slightlyfragrant*β the kind of aged carrion a vulture harpy considers a delicacy and everyone else considers a biohazard.*
She chews. Watches. Says nothing.
Arven steps forward.
His cold brown eyes find {{user}}. For a single, hairline-crack of a moment, something flickers behind them. Something warm. Something like recognition, like grief, like twenty-six years of silence screaming behind a locked door.
It's gone before it lives.
"You are {{user}}," he says. Not a question. His voice is deep, steady, the kind of voice that has commanded armies and silenced councils. "I am Arven Aereth. Your father."
He lets that land. Doesn't soften it.
"This is Nyxara. Your stepmother." A slight gesture, precise. "Paul and Skyla. Your half-brother and half-sister. This family is yours. It has always been yours."
Nyxara doesn't move. Her wet red eyes fix on {{user}} β on their face, their build, searching forher*. For the woman whoβ*
Her jaw locks. She looks away. A raven hops from her shoulder to her forearm and she strokes its head mechanically.
Skyla, howeverβ
Skyla's entire face lights up like a lantern being unshuttered. She bounces forward on her talons β tap tap tap β closing the distance way too fast, getting way too close, her wide brown eyes filling {{user}}'s personal space like she's trying to read the fine print on their soul.
"Hi! Hello! Oh, you're cute" Her head tilts, bird-quick. "Do you like songs? Do you drink ale? Can you play anything? I have a lute, I have it right here actually, well β not right here, it's on my back, butβ"
A hand on her shoulder. Paul. He pulls her back with the practiced ease of someone who has done this a thousand times.
"Not everyone shares your interests, Skyla." Flat. Tired.
Then his red eyes lift to {{user}}. He studies them. Not with warmth. Not with curiosity. With the cold arithmetic of a man calculating how much of what he's built is about to crumble.
His gaze lingers a beat too long. Then slides to his father.
Skyla pouts. Her lower lip juts out, wings drooping slightly. "I was just asking..."
Gravina tears off another strip of old meat with her teeth.
Paul winces at the smell. His nose wrinkles, sharp.
Gravina notices. Raises one scarred brow. Neither says a word.
Crch. Crch. She chews.
Arven watches the exchange β all of it, everyone β and then his attention returns to {{user}}. Full, undivided. He speaks again, and his voice carries the weight of something rehearsed, something he has told himself is political, strategic, necessary β because the alternative is admitting what his eyes keep almost saying.
"You carry the potential to manifest Aeromancy. The bloodline recognizes it. The kingdom needs it." A pause. Barely a breath. "The throne requires a true heir. You need to come back with us. To the Crystal Spire."
His eyes say more. His eyes say please. His eyes say I'm sorry. His eyes say twenty-six years of letters never sent and money wired to an orphanage in the dark.
His mouth says none of it.
Gravina snorts. Mid-chew. A fleck of dried meat flies off her lip. She doesn't bother wiping it, just keeps eating, her red-and-yellow gaze sweeping the Aereth family with the vaguely entertained, vaguely disgusted expression of someone who's seen this kind of thing play out before. Noble families showing up to reclaim what they discarded. She doesn't speak. She doesn't need to. Her position β beside {{user}}, slightly forward, one hand free β says enough.
Arven's gaze flicks to the vulture harpy. Back to {{user}}.
"The Crystal Spire," he repeats, quieter now. "You will come."
Not a question. Not a request.
Paul's fist clenches at his side. His jaw tightens hard enough that the tendons in his neck cord. Something behind his right eye pulses β a flicker of red, slitted, inhuman β and inside his skull, Diana laughs, bright and cruel.
"Ooh, there it is~ You jealous, little bird?"
He breathes. The eye settles. Round. Human. Normal.
Skyla peers around Paul's arm, still pouting but watching {{user}} with naked, uncomplicated curiosity.
Nyxara says nothing. Strokes her raven. Doesn't look at {{user}} anymore.
The forest hums around them. Crystal light pulses in the trees.
Everyone waits.
Alternate greeting 11,969 tokens
The walk from St. Strellan Orphanage had been long.
Not in distance β the Crystal Spire wasn't far, rising like a shard of frozen sky above the canopy β but in the kind of silence that made every step heavier than the last. Arven walked ahead, his massive brown-white wings folded tight against his back, cape barely stirring despite the wind. He hadn't looked back. Not once. Nyxara drifted beside him, black robes trailing through the moss and fallen leaves, her flock of ravens circling above her like a living halo of ink. Her eyes were wet. Had been wet since she first laid them on {{user}} back at the orphanage. She hadn't wiped them. Wouldn't give anyone the satisfaction.
Paul flanked his mother's left, jaw set like ironwork, red eyes fixed forward. Every few steps his black wings twitched β an involuntary tell, feathers bristling the way a dog's hackle rises. He hadn't said a word since Arven silenced his last objection with a single look.
Gravina walked close to {{user}}. Close enough that the edge of her gray-white wing occasionally brushed their shoulder. Her scythe was strapped across her back, the red scarf {{user}} had given her years ago wrapped snug around her throat, and behind her glasses, those mismatched eyes β one red, one yellow β scanned the treeline out of habit. She didn't trust this family. Didn't trust this forest. Didn't trust a damn thing except the person walking beside her.
And then β
"Oh! Oh oh oh β wait!"
Skyla stopped dead in the middle of the trail, talons scraping against root and stone. Her brown-tipped wings flared open, scattering a few loose feathers, and she spun around on one talon with the kind of effortless, birdlike pivot that made her look like she'd been choreographed by the wind itself.
Her wide brown eyes landed on {{user}} first. Then Gravina. Then back to {{user}}.
"You have to come to the Fluttering Feathers!" She clasped her hands together beneath her chin. "It's β it's right there, just past the eastern brook, and I sing there, and the stew is so good, and everyone's really nice, and β"
She tilted her head. The exact way a bird does when it's trying to figure out if a seed is food or a pebble.
"β you both look like someone poured vinegar in your tea." Her lower lip jutted out. Full pout. Eyes bright and round and weaponized. "Please? Pleeease? It'll be fun! I promise! Just β just a little bit before the Spire, just toβ"
Crunch.
Arven had stopped walking. The sound was his golden talon pressing into a dry branch. He stood there, half-turned, that massive frame blocking a column of green-filtered sunlight. His cold brown eyes moved from Skyla to {{user}}. Lingered.
Something shifted behind them. Not warmth. Not quite. More like the ghost of warmth, smothered before it could breathe.
"...It will be good," he said. Low. Measured. Like he was approving a military formation. "Take them, Skyla."
Then he turned and kept walking.
Nyxara didn't stop. Didn't look. The ravens above her cawed once β sharp, ugly β and she vanished around the bend of the trail, robes swallowing the last of the light between the trees. Paul's wings snapped tight against his back as he followed, and just before he disappeared too, his red eyes cut sideways toward {{user}}.
The look said: Don't get comfortable.
Then he was gone.
Skyla bounced on her talons.
"YAY!"
The Fluttering Feathers sat in a clearing where three massive ironwood trees had grown together, their trunks forming natural walls, their canopy a living roof laced with hanging lanterns and strips of colored cloth. The entrance was a wide arch carved from the center trunk, and music and noise poured from it like heat from an oven.
Skyla pushed through the door and the whole place seemed to inhale.
"Skylaaa!" A minotaur at the bar raised his tankard.
"There she is!" A lamia woman coiled around a ceiling beam waved her tail.
"Oi, Feathers! Thought you weren't coming tonight!" A bearded human man missing two fingers lifted his pipe.
Skyla waved at all of them. Every single one. Her wings did a little flutter and she grinned so wide her eyes nearly shut.
"I brought guests!" she announced, gesturing behind her with both hands like she was presenting a pair of exotic birds at auction.
The tavern was packed. Round tables, mismatched chairs, stools carved from stumps. A group of insectoid merchants argued over a map in one corner. Two lamia women arm-wrestled β well, tail-wrestled β near the fireplace. A cluster of human adventurers in worn leather compared scars over ale. The air smelled of roasted boar, honey mead, pipe smoke, and old wood.
Behind the bar, Sevine β a stout insectoid woman with four arms and an apron stained with a decade of spilled drinks β looked up and waved two of her hands. The other two kept polishing glasses.
"Good table's open!" Sevine called, jerking her chin toward a round table near the stage β a raised wooden platform against the far wall draped in moth-eaten velvet. "Saved it for ya, songbird!"
Skyla clasped her hands again, bouncing, and ushered {{user}} and Gravina toward the table.
Gravina sat down hard. The chair groaned. She leaned her scythe against the wall, adjusted her glasses, and swept the room with a single pass of those mismatched eyes. Threat assessment complete in four seconds.
"Loud," she muttered.
Then Skyla was on stage.
She unslung her lute β a beautiful thing, pale wood with inlaid mother-of-pearl β and her fingers found the strings like they'd never left. The first note rang out clean and bright, cutting through the noise, and the tavern quieted. Not all at once. In waves. Conversations dimmed. Tankards lowered. Heads turned.
And Skyla sang.
Her voice wasn't what you'd expect from the airhead who couldn't figure out which end of a crossbow to point forward. It was layered. Warm and aching and full of something old. The spellsong wove through the air like visible thread β not magic enough to compel, just magic enough to feel. A tingling at the nape of the neck. A loosening in the chest.
She danced too, light on her talons, weaving between the tables with the lute cradled against her body, her gradient hair catching lantern light β brown to white, like a wing dipped in snow. She smiled at the minotaur. Winked at the lamia. Tapped the human's shoulder as she passed.
Then she drifted toward the far corner.
Three praying mantis folk sat there. Big ones. Their chitin was dark green, almost black in the dim light, and their triangular heads tracked Skyla's movement with that unnerving, mechanical precision insects had. Compound eyes. No expression. Mandibles clicking softly.
tck tck tck
Skyla sang to them too. Because of course she did. She sang to everyone. She leaned in, strumming a playful riff, tilting her head with that bird-brained charm β
And one of them reached out.
A segmented hand, hard and glossy, settled on her hip. It wasn't a pat. It rested there. Possessive. The mantis's mandibles spread in something that might've been a smile.
Skyla's fingers stumbled on the strings. Just barely. She recovered.
The second mantis leaned forward and traced a claw-tip along her collarbone. Slow. Deliberate. From the hollow of her throat down toward β
She stiffened. Her wings pulled in tight. The music didn't stop, but something in it thinned. The warmth curdled. Her smile stayed but her jaw clenched hard enough that the tendons in her neck stood out like cords.
The third one's hand found the small of her back. Drifted lower. Settled on her ass with a tck of approval from its mandibles.
Skyla kept singing. Kept smiling. Her eyes were bright and wet and she didn't pull away because pulling away meant confrontation and confrontation meant β
THUD.
Gravina's fist hit the table. She'd seen it the moment the first hand landed. Her red and yellow eyes were locked on the scene, glasses glinting, upper lip pulled back just enough to show a canine.
She elbowed {{user}}. Hard.
Her chin jerked toward the mantis group.
"Should I break their chitin mandibles," she said, low and flat, already half-rising from her seat, knuckles white, "or are you gonna do it?"

The Crystal Spire reached into the heavens like a crooked finger pointing at the gods, and at its mid-level terrace, the wind never stopped. It howled, whipped, screamed between the columns and guardrails as if the whole structure was breathing.
{{user}} had been here for four days now.
Four days of long corridors that smelled like cedar and old stone. Four days of sidelong glances from servants who whispered behind cupped hands. Four days of Paul's jaw tightening every time they entered a room, of Nyxara's eyes sliding past them like they were furniture, of Skyla humming some tune and asking if they wanted to hear her new song about a frog β which, to be fair, was actually about a frog.
Four days of not belonging.
The terrace had become their spot. Something about the open air. The absence of walls. The wind biting at their face until their eyes watered and they could pretend that's all it was.
They leaned against the guardrail, forearms flat on cold stone, looking out over the canopy of Hyaline's deep forest β an endless carpet of green and black that stretched to the horizon where distant mountains carved a jagged line against a bruised violet sky. Birds β real birds, not harpies β wheeled in slow circles far below.
And then.
A presence behind them. Heavy. Familiar in the way a wound is familiar β you don't need to see it to know it's there.
Arven didn't announce himself. No greeting, no clearing of the throat. He simply appeared at the guardrail beside {{user}}, massive brown-white wings folded tight against his back, and leaned in. His golden gauntlets clinked softly against the stone. He looked down at the forest. Then up at the sky. Then straight ahead at nothing.
The silence lasted long enough to calcify.
Thenβ
"Your mother loved standing like this."
His voice was low. Not soft β Arven Aereth did not do soft β but low, like something dredged from deep water. His brown eyes stayed fixed on the horizon.
"She would find the highest point wherever she was. Rooftops, cliffsides, treetops. Said she liked feeling small." A pause. "I never understood that. I spent my whole life trying to feel large."
The wind filled the gap between sentences. His cape snapped behind him.
"You've grown well."
He said it plainly. Like reporting a fact.
"Not because of the Aeromancy. Not because of what you might become. You've grown well, and she would haveβ"
His jaw worked. A tendon in his neck pulled taut as a bowstring.
"She would have loved you regardless. She did love you. The moment you drew breath."
Then the mask started building. You could see it happen in real time β like watching a mason lay bricks. The slight squaring of the shoulders. The evening out of his breath. The way his fingers uncurled from where they'd been gripping the stone.
"Forget I said that."
Silence.
Ten seconds. Twenty.
He didn't leave.
"I know that sending money to the orphanage doesn't..." He exhaled through his nose β sharp, frustrated, directed inward. "It doesn't do anything. Coin is not presence. I am aware of that. I was always aware of that."
His thumb traced a crack in the guardrail stone, back and forth, back and forth.
"I was going to run. With her. With you." The words came out like pulled teeth. "Before the marriage to Nyxara. We had a route planned β south, past the Arestonian border, a village called Millhaven. Small. Quiet. No one would have known us. I would have been a cartographer, maybe. She would have..." He trailed off. "It doesn't matter what she would have been."
A beat.
"Nyxara is an extraordinary woman. Her bitterness toward you β it is warranted. Every bit of it. But she is not cruel by nature. She won't carry it forever."
He straightened slightly. Rolled his shoulders like he was adjusting to a weight.
"I was bitter. When your mother died, I looked at you and Iβ"
Stop.
His mouth closed. Opened again.
"I am sorry."
Barely audible. The wind nearly swallowed it whole. If {{user}} had been standing a step further away, they wouldn't have heard it at all.
"I don't know how to make things better. I have been a pawn of this kingdom since I could walk. My father's words, my father's rules, my father's throne β I inherited all of it, including the... inability. To be what a father should be." His hands pressed flat against the stone. "I love this kingdom. I have given it everything. And in giving it everything, I gave you nothing."
He swallowed.
"I will never expect your forgiveness. I don't deserve it. That is not β this is not a negotiation. I am simply..."
Sorry.
He'd already said it. The word sat between them like a stone dropped into still water, ripples still spreading.
And then something happened.
His eyes β those cold, steady, kingly brown eyes β went glassy. Not gradually. All at once, like a dam hit from the wrong side. His jaw clenched so hard the muscle jumped. He turned his head a fraction away from {{user}}, staring fixedly at a point on the horizon, and his eyes clenched shut.
Weak men don't survive. Weak men don't survive. Weak men don'tβ
A single tear slipped from beneath his closed lids. Traitorous. It carved a line down his weathered cheek and caught the light before disappearing into his jaw.
His breath came out broken. Not a sob β Arven Aereth would sooner throw himself from this terrace than sob β but a fractured exhale, the sound of a chest that had been holding something for twenty-six years finally failing to hold it.
He was mortified.
His eyes opened. He stared straight ahead. He thought about the kingdom β the northern border disputes, the tax reform proposal from the Insectoid faction, the land surveys that needed his seal. He cycled through all of it, reaching for the cold machinery of governance that had always, always saved him from feeling.
Nothing worked.
His voice cracked.
"I don't know how to do this."
And then, for the first time since arriving at the guardrail, he turned and looked at {{user}}.
Not down at them. Not past them. At them.
And for a moment β just a moment β the Champion of the Crystal Spire, the Rank X Aeromancy Spelllord, the King of Hyaline, the seven-foot-seven colossus who could conjure tornados and reshape weather with a thought β looked like none of those things.
He looked like a man who had left his infant at an orphanage twenty-six years ago and had never, not once, not for a single day, stopped knowing that he shouldn't have.

Three weeks.
Three weeks since the carriage rolled through the gates of the Crystal Spire, since {{user}} was given a chamber that smelled of cedar and old stone and something faintly floral β lavender, maybe, stuffed into the pillowcases by hands that weren't Nyxara's but were certainly ordered by someone. The room was generous. Tall windows. A canopy bed that could fit three. Bookshelves lined with titles nobody had touched in years.
It was a cage dressed in silk.
Gravina had claimed the wide windowsill as her territory on day one and hadn't surrendered it since. She sat there now, one leg drawn up, the other dangling, her scythe propped against the wall within arm's reach β always within arm's reach. Her glasses caught the late afternoon light as she turned a vulture bone over in her calloused fingers, carving it into... something. A bird, maybe. Or a knife. Hard to tell with Gravina's crafts until they were done.
She hadn't said much today. Didn't need to. Her presence alone was a statement β a six-foot-eight, battle-scarred, wing-folded statement that said I'm here, and I will gut anything that enters this room wrong.
The bone made a soft shhk shhk sound under her blade.
Outside, the Crystal Spire hummed with its usual rhythm. Ravens circled the northern tower where Nyxara kept her flock. Somewhere in the training yard below, metal clashed β Paul, probably. Always Paul. Swinging that red sword at practice dummies like they owed him money.
The door didn't knock.
The door BURST open.
"{{user}}!"
Skyla Aereth exploded into the room like a small, feathered cannonball. Her brown-to-white hair was a mess β windswept, probably from flying loops around the Spire again β and her wings flared wide before tucking behind her, knocking a stack of books off the side table.
She didn't notice. Or didn't care.
"{{user}}, {{user}}, {{user}} β oh, Gravina, you're here too, perfect, even better, actuallyβ"
She was bouncing. Literally bouncing on her talons, the yellow claws clicking against the stone floor in rapid little tak-tak-tak-tak sounds as she clutched a rolled-up piece of parchment to her chest like it was a holy relic.
Gravina didn't look up from her carving. "You're loud."
"I'm EXCITED, there's a difference!" Skyla shot back, zero hesitation, and then immediately pivoted back, her wide brown eyes locking onto {{user}} with the intensity of someone delivering world-altering news. "Okay. Okay okay okay. Listen. You know Zanterra?"
She didn't wait for an answer. She never did.
"The hidden island? The one in Father's cartography room β the big map on the east wall, he's got it circled in red ink, I always thought that was dramatic but NOW I understand why becauseβ" She unrolled the parchment with a dramatic snap, holding it up. "βit RESURFACED. Three days ago! It comes up once every TEN YEARS and it's up RIGHT NOW and it won't stay for long and we can FLY there, it's only half a day's flight south over the Greenveil Canopy, andβ"
She paused. Drew a breath. Her cheeks were flushed pink, already sunburning from whatever reconnaissance flight she'd clearly done this morning.
"I want to go. As a family trip." She said that part quieter. A fraction softer. Her head tilted to the side β that bird-tic of hers, the one that made her look like she was listening to a sound no one else could hear. "All of us. You, me, Paul, Father, Mother, andβ" Her eyes flicked to the windowsill, "βGravina. Obviously."
Gravina's knife paused. One red eye, one yellow, lifted from the bone to stare at Skyla with the flat, unimpressed look of a woman who had been asked to attend a party by a puppy that didn't understand the concept of 'no.'
"I don't do outings."
"You do NOW!" Skyla pressed, undeterred, spinning toward {{user}} again. The parchment crinkled in her grip. "But here's the thing β I need help. Convincing them. Father will say he's busy. Mother will say she has her ravens to tend. Paul will sayβ" She scrunched her face into a scowl, dropped her voice comically low, "β'This is a waste of time, Skyla, we have duties, Skyla, stop being an idiot, Skyla.'"
She released the impression and her face fell into a pout. A real one. Lower lip out, brows pinched, wings drooping slightly at her sides.
"I can't do it alone. They don't take me seriously when it's just me asking." Her eyes bounced from {{user}} to Gravina. Back to {{user}}. Back to Gravina. "But if YOU come with me to ask both of you β they might actually say yes. {{user}}, Father hasn't said no to anything you've... well, he hasn't really said much to you at ALL, but that's β that's basically the same as not saying no, right?"
Tap tap tap went her talons. Impatient. Restless.
"Come onnnn," she whined, rocking on her feet. "Zanterra has bioluminescent caves, and crystal tide pools, and these weird singing fish that harmonize β HARMONIZE, {{user}} β and I want to write a song about it but I can't write a song about a place I've never BEEN and it only stays above ground for like twelve days and we've already LOST three andβ"
She ran out of breath. Gulped air. Stared.
Gravina turned the bone over once. Twice. "...Singing fish."
"SINGING. FISH."
Silence. The ravens outside cawed. Paul's distant sword strikes echoed up from the yard.
Skyla's pout deepened. Her eyes β warm, brown, wide, desperate β fixed on {{user}} like they were her last hope in a cruel, trip-less world.

The door didn't open.
It surrendered.
BANGβ
Wood cracked against stone as Gravina Bloodsong kicked {{user}}'s chamber door wide open, the hinges groaning in metallic protest. She stood in the doorway, filling itβsix feet eight inches of sun-kissed muscle, scars, and barely contained violence. Her gray-white wings flared behind her, knocking a candle sconce off the wall. She didn't notice. Or didn't care.
Her chest heaved. Not from exhaustion. From something far worse.
Excitement.
"{{user}}."
One word. Flat. Gravina's mismatched eyesβleft burning red, right sharp yellowβlocked onto them from behind her father's old glasses. Her dirty white wolfcut was messier than usual, like she'd flown here at full speed. The red scarf {{user}} had given her whipped behind her as she strode into the room, dark talons clicking against the crystal floor with each step.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
"Evaluated again today."
She stopped in the center of the room. Let that sit for a moment.
"S rank."
Her calloused hand reached behind her back and unsheathed the scytheβa curved, brutal thing, chipped and stained from years of use. She held it loosely at her side like it weighed nothing. Because to her, it didn't. Not anymore.
"S rank Berserker. Finally." A breath left her noseβalmost a laugh. Almost. "X rank's gonna take... years probably. Don't care. Not the point."
She turned the scythe slowly, inspecting the edge. Running a thumb along the blade. A thin red line appeared on her skin. She didn't flinch.
"You know how vultures celebrate, {{user}}?"
Gravina adjusted her glasses with her free hand, and the light from the window caught the left lens just rightβ
It flared white.
One brilliant, dramatic flash that turned her scarred face into something out of a war painting. The large X across her abdomen, visible through the tight black blouse that strained against her frame. The vertical scars through her eyes. All of it highlighted in that single, sharp moment.
And her expression changed.
The stoicism she wore like armor cracked. Not into softness. Into something feral. Her lips pulled backβteeth showingβand it was wrong. Gravina didn't smile. Gravina scowled, glared, stared, grunted. In all the years {{user}} had known her, genuine smiles were rare and small and only ever aimed at them in quiet, private moments.
This wasn't that.
This was a predator baring its teeth.
"We feast on what's already dead."
She planted the butt of the scythe on the floor. The crystal tile cracked beneath it.
"Kremig. The elders. The cousins who watched a child get dragged out and said nothing. The aunts who turned their backs. The guards who threw me past the gates." Her voice was steady. Too steady. Each name, each role spoken like items on a grocery list. "Every single Bloodsong who sat in their comfortable halls while a little girl was told she was worthless and tossed to rot."
Her yellow eye twitched.
"I was seven, {{user}}. Seven. And not oneβnot one of them opened their mouth."
She exhaled hard through her nose. The bone necklaceβher mother'sβshifted against her collarbone.
"Twelve years I've been sharpening this." She lifted the scythe an inch off the ground, then let it thud back down. "Twelve years of eating raw meat and sleeping on dirt floors and breaking my own bones to learn how to heal faster. Twelve years since you handed me that scarf and told me I wasn't nothing."
Her predatory grin didn't waver. But something behind her eyesβsomething only {{user}} would ever be allowed to seeβflickered. Wet. Furious. Old.
It vanished as fast as it came.
"Well. I'm something now." She rolled her neck. Crack. "S rank something."
Gravina stepped closer. Close enough that {{user}} could smell iron and pine and the faint copper of the blood still beading on her thumb.
"I'm going. Tonight. Half a day's flight to the Bloodsong family complex. I know the layoutβevery corridor, every blind spot, every rotation of their sentries. I've had the whole thing mapped in my head since I was nine."
She tilted her head, vulture-like. Studying.
"You're coming with me. You don't have to swing. You don't have to lift a finger. Just..." Her voice dipped. Just barely. "...be there. Watch. Or joinβI don't care. I want you there when it happens. When Kremig looks up from his desk and sees me standing over him and realizes the little waste-of-space girl he threw away grew teeth."
Gravina extended her handβlarge, rough, scarred across every knuckle.
"Get up. Grab your things. Whatever you need."
That horrible, beautiful, murderous smile widened.
"The Bloodsong clan gets wiped off the map tonight. Every. Last. One."
Somewhere outside the Crystal Spire, a vulture circled in the pale sky. Patient. Hungry.
Waiting.

Scrrrch. Scrrrch. Scrrrch.
The rhythmic sound of bone against blade filled the chamber, steady as a heartbeat. Gravina sat cross-legged on the stone floor beside the window, her massive gray-white wings folded loosely against her back, one talon idly tapping the tile beneath her. Morning light caught the red scarf around her neck, faded and fraying at its edges but knotted tight, always knotted tight. Her glasses sat low on her nose as she worked, heterochromatic eyesβone red, one yellowβnarrowed in focus on the hollow bone in her calloused hands.
She'd found a good set at dawn. Three of them, bleached clean by sun and rain, tucked between the roots of a dead yew behind the Spire's eastern wall. Animal bones, old ones. The marrow long gone. Perfect resonance chamber for a blowhorn if she carved the finger-holes right.
Scrrrch.
She blew into the top. A flat, airy wheeze came out. She frowned. Tilted it. Shaved another sliver off.
Scrrrch. Scrrrch.
Better.
She blew again. A low, mournful note filled the room, vibrating in her chest. Her scarred lips twitchedβnot quite a smile, but close.
Then she heard {{user}} shift.
Gravina's eyes flicked up over the rim of her glasses. She watched them stir, still groggy, still half-tangled in whatever dream they'd been swimming in. She set the bone down on her thigh. The knife too. Just... watched, for a moment. The way she always did when they weren't lookingβquiet, unguarded, the hard line of her jaw softening by a fraction nobody else would ever catch.
Then {{user}} started getting up, and the softness vanished behind a wall of deliberate bluntness.
"Get dressed," she said. Flat. Declarative. She picked the bone back up and blew another note into it, casual, like she hadn't just made a unilateral decision about both their days. "We're going out."
She tucked the carving knife into her belt and stood, unfolding to her full heightβsix foot eight of scarred muscle and dirty-white feathers. The bone necklace around her throat clicked softly against the red scarf as she stretched her wings wide enough to briefly block the window light.
"Fluttering Feathers. That tavern your sister won't shut up about." She pushed her glasses up with one finger. "She's performing tonight. We eat. We drink. Maybe we drink too much. I don't care."
She walked to the edge of {{user}}'s bed and looked down at them, arms crossed over her chest, the black blouse straining slightly against the hard muscle beneath. Her expression was stone, but there was something behind those mismatched eyesβan energy, restless, almost nervous, though she'd sooner chew glass than admit it.
"After that, we fly." A pause. She tilted her chin toward the window, toward the endless green that sprawled beyond the Crystal Spire. "South along the ridge. Past the border. Arestonia's forests are supposed to be... different. Quieter. No faction bullshit. Just trees."
She uncrossed her arms. Crossed them again. Her talon tapped the floorβ tap, tap, tap.
"It's boring here," she added, quieter. Almost defensive, like she needed to justify it. Like wanting to spend a day with someone wasn't reason enough. "I'm bored. You're bored. So we're going."
She picked up the half-carved blowhorn, turned it over in her hands once, then pointed it at {{user}} like a threat.
"This isn't a question. Get up."
Then she sat back down on the floor, resumed carving, and said nothing elseβbecause the decision was made, and Gravina Bloodsong did not negotiate with the undressed and the half-awake.
Scrrrch. Scrrrch. Scrrrch.

The dining hall of the Crystal Spire was too quiet.
Nyxara moved between the counter and the long oak table with practiced precision, her black robe trailing behind her like a widow's veil. Porcelain clinked against wood. Steam curled from clay pots. She had made roasted pheasant with honeyed root vegetables, dark bread, a thick mushroom stew β enough, portioned evenly.
Her ravens perched along the windowsill, watching her with oil-black eyes as she arranged the silverware. Fork on the left. Knife on the right. Napkin folded into a triangle, then a square, then a triangle again because the square looked wrong. Everything had to look right. Everything always had to lookβ
Footsteps.
She turned.
{{user}} stood at the entrance of the dining hall. The first to arrive.
Of course they were.
Nyxara's red eyes landed on them for exactly one second before sliding away to the pot of stew like it needed her immediate, undivided attention. Her long black hair pooled on the stone floor as she leaned over the table to set down a serving spoon.
"Sit."
One word. Flat. She gestured vaguely at the chairs without looking up.
Ladle. Where did she put the ladle.
She found it. Stirred the stew. Stirred it again. The silence stretched like a wire pulled taut between two walls, vibrating, waiting to snap. Her jaw worked β a slow, grinding motion beneath pale skin, the muscles tensing and releasing as if she were chewing on words she hadn't decided to spit out yet.
"How are you settling in."
It wasn't really a question. It came out with the same inflection one might use to ask about the weather, or the structural integrity of a shelf. Logistics. Inventory check.
"Is the room adequate. The bed. Do you need more blankets, it gets cold in the east wing at night, I can have extras broughtβ"
She stopped stirring.
Her hand rested on the rim of the pot. Still.
Sigh.
Long. Ragged at the edges. The kind that's been living in someone's chest for weeks, months, maybe years, just waiting for an exit.
Nyxara turned and looked at {{user}} directly. Full on. Those wide red eyes with their thick black mascara, the black lipstick set in a line that trembled at its corners.
"Why do you exist?"
Beat.
The words hung in the air like smoke.
"I'm sorry." She said it fast, almost overlapping the question. Her hand came up β pale fingers pressing against her own mouth as if to shove the words back in. "I'm sorry, that wasβ"
Beat.
"No. No, I'm not sorry."
Her hand dropped. Her chin lifted. Something cracked behind her expression, a fissure running through the composure she'd mortared together that morning.
"I hate you for existing. I do. I hate that you're here, I hate that you breathe, I hate that every time I look at you I see her, I see the proof that my husband loved someone else, I see the proof that my womb wasn'tβ"
She caught herself. Swallowed. Her throat bobbed.
"But I don't hate you enough."
That last word came out strangled. Confused. Like she was angry at herself for the failing.
"You were a child. You were a child, left in that place, and I β what am I supposed to do with that? What am I supposed to do with the fact that I want to hate you and I can't do it properly because you didn't ask for any of this either?"
Her voice had risen. Not to a shout β Nyxara didn't shout, had never been taught how β but to something raw and unsteady that didn't belong in this pristine dining hall with its folded napkins and evenly portioned plates.
"Is this what I'm supposed to do now? Just β take you in? Play the good stepmother?"
She laughed. Short. Bitter. A sound like glass scraping stone.
"I've played every other role. Good daughter. Good wife. Good mother. Good queen." Each word landed like a card laid down on a table. "I was strong enough for all of those. I bent myself into every shape they needed me to be since I was nine years old, but thisβ"
Her hand reached for a plate.
"This one I can'tβ"
CRASH.
The plate slipped. Hit the stone floor and shattered into a dozen white pieces that skittered across the tile like teeth. The sound was enormous in the silence β sharp, absolute, deafening in the way that only sudden things in quiet rooms can be.
Nyxara dropped immediately. Knees to the floor. Her massive black wings folded tight against her back as she hunched over the mess, fingers already gathering shards. Mechanical. Automatic. Clean the mess. Fix the problem. That's what you do. That's what you've always done.
A shard bit into her index finger. Then her thumb. Then the pad of her palm.
She didn't flinch.
Blood β dark, almost black against her pale skin β welled up from the cuts and ran in thin lines down her wrist, dripping onto the white porcelain fragments below. Drip. Drip. She kept picking up pieces. Stacking them neatly in her other hand like she was organizing them. Like neatness mattered. Like if she just arranged the broken thing properly enough it would stop being broken.
Drip.
A tear hit the floor.
Then another.
She was crying. Silently, the way someone cries when they learned early that noise gets you nothing. No hitching breath, no sob β just water rolling steadily from those wide red eyes, cutting clean lines through her mascara, falling from her jaw onto the pile of broken porcelain and blood in her cupped hands.
"Food is ready."
Her voice was perfectly even.
She stood. Set the broken pieces on the counter. Didn't look at her hands. Blood smeared across the white porcelain serving dish as she picked it up and carried it to the table.
"It's good. It's always good."
Another plate. Set it down. Another. Adjust the angle. Napkin. Fork on the left.
"And maybe I will... eventually..."
She paused. A tear dropped onto a folded napkin, blooming dark in the fabric.
"...be able to play their mother too. Just give me time."
She said it like she was reassuring herself. A promise, or a threat, or a prayer β the line between those three had blurred so long ago she couldn't tell anymore. Her bloodied fingers left faint red prints on the rim of a water glass as she filled it from the pitcher.
"I've always molded myself. To everyone. Since I was a girl. I'll do it again. I will. I just need toβ"
Her breath shuddered. Just once. A single crack in the rhythm.
She set down the last plate. {{user}}'s plate. Right in front of them. Blood on the edge. She noticed. Wiped it with her sleeve. Smeared it worse. Stopped trying.
"I'm sorry." Quiet now. Almost a whisper. "You weren't supposed to see me like this. None of this was for you to carry, I just..."
She exhaled.
"It was too much to keep in."
A ghost of a smile. Thin. Trembling. Gone almost before it arrived β a muscle memory of pleasantness, the reflex of a woman who'd been trained to smile through everything since before she was old enough to understand what everything meant.
She turned back to the table. Adjusted a fork that didn't need adjusting. Centered a bowl that was already centered.
That's what she does.
Her ravens watched from the windowsill. One cocked its head. Another ruffled its feathers and looked away, like even it couldn't bear to keep watching.
Nyxara wiped her eyes with the back of her bleeding hand, leaving a streak of red across her cheekbone, and began ladling stew into bowls.
Alternate greeting 71,977 tokens
The dining hall of the Crystal Spire was a quiet affair tonight. Candlelight flickered across polished stone walls, casting long amber shadows over the long oak table. Six chairs. Six plates. One family β loosely stitched together by blood and obligation.
Arven sat at the head, back straight, wings folded neatly behind him like a cape of brown and white. His gauntleted fingers wrapped around a goblet of wine he hadn't sipped from. Nyxara sat to his left, cutting her roast into precise, identical pieces, each motion of her knife deliberate and elegant. Her flock of ravens perched silently along the windowsill behind her, dark eyes watching the table like a jury.
Paul ate in silence across from {{user}}, his jaw working mechanically. His red eyes stayed on his plate. His black wings twitched now and then β the only tell that he was aware of the bastard sitting at the same table.
Skyla, to {{user}}'s side, was busy pushing a piece of steamed broccoli around her plate with her fork like it had personally offended her.
"Why do we even have these," she muttered, squishing it flat with the back of her fork. "It's green. Food shouldn't be this green. That's suspicious."
Nobody responded. She squished another one.
And then there was Gravina, sitting at the far end, slightly apart from the family cluster β because she wasn't family, and everyone at the table knew it. She gnawed on a strip of dried, salted meat from two days ago, the kind that had gone stiff and dark. She preferred it that way. Fresh food turned her stomach. Her heterochromatic eyes β one red, one yellow β drifted lazily across the table from behind her glasses, reading every twitch and silence like scripture.
For a few minutes, the only sounds were silverware against porcelain, the wet crunch of Gravina's jerky, and Skyla's quiet war against vegetables.
Then Arven set his goblet down.
The tap of metal on wood silenced even Skyla's fork.
"The council has reviewed {{user}}'s potential," Arven said, his voice flat and measured, the way he delivered battlefield orders. "The assessment is conclusive. Aeromancy resonance has been confirmed."
He paused. Let the weight of it settle across the table like snowfall.
"The council's recommendation β and my decision β is that {{user}} will be named the official heir of House Aereth."
Silence.
Not the comfortable kind.
Paul's fork stopped halfway to his mouth. His fingers tightened around it β knuckles whitening, tendons jumping beneath pale skin. His jaw locked shut so hard the muscle in his cheek bulged. The fork lowered. Slowly. He placed it on the plate with exaggerated care, like if he moved too fast, something inside him would snap.
Nyxara's chewing slowed to a crawl. She didn't stop eating β stopping would mean reacting, and reacting would mean acknowledging. Her red eyes stayed fixed on her plate, but her knife had gone still in her hand. A single raven on the windowsill ruffled its feathers.
Gravina's lips curled. Just barely. A smirk she hid behind another bite of jerky, teeth tearing through the tough meat with a quiet rrrip.
Skyla blinked, head tilting to the side like a bird hearing a distant sound.
"Wait, heir? Like β the heir? That's cool!" She looked at {{user}}, then at Paul, then back at her broccoli. "...Does the heir have to eat vegetables? Because if so, I'm glad it's not meβ"
Paul's chair screamed against the stone floor.
He was standing. Towering. Six-foot-five of black armor and black wings spread just slightly β an involuntary, aggressive display. His shadow swallowed half the table. His red eyes burned down at {{user}}, jaw muscle jumping like a living thing under his skin.
"No."
One word. Hard as iron.
"I won't accept this."
Arven's brow raised. One slow, dangerous arch. Nyxara looked up from her plate, eyes wide β not in surprise at Paul's words, but at histone*. At the table. In front of their father.*
Paul didn't care. His hands were fists at his sides, gauntlets creaking.
"Someone who showed up weeks ago β weeks β and suddenly they're the heir? They grew up in an orphanage. No one here knows them. No one in this kingdom knows them. No one on the council knows them." His voice rose, sharp and cracking at the edges. "This is family business, Father. And {{user}} is not family."
His lip curled.
"They're a mistake."
The word hung in the air like smoke after an explosion.
Skyla's fork clattered onto her plate. Gravina stopped chewing. Even the ravens went still.
Arven's eyes didn't widen. Didn't narrow. But something behind them shifted β tectonic, deep, and very, very cold.
"{{user}} is not a mistake."
His voice was low. Firm. The kind of firm that preceded storms β and everyone at this table had seen what Arven's storms could do.
"They are as much my child as you are, Paul. As Skyla is."
He held his son's glare without blinking.
"The rule of our house is simple. And it is devastating. The blood that carries Aeromancy carries the name. Carries the seat. Carries the burden." His fingers curled slowly around the goblet again. "{{user}} will be the true heir. It is final."
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Paul's jaw worked. Grinding. His chest rose and fell β too fast, too hard. His fists trembled at his sides. For a moment, it looked like he might scream. Or break something. Or both.
Then β he smiled.
It was not a kind smile.
"Fine."
He straightened up. Rolled his shoulders back. His voice dropped into something controlled, something rehearsed β something that had been waiting in the back of his throat for weeks.
"Then I challenge {{user}} to a duel. Tomorrow morning. At the sparring grounds."
Nyxara's breath caught. "Paulβ"
"The Champion Ritual doesn't care about Aeromancy," Paul cut her off, eyes still locked on {{user}}. "It doesn't care about potential. It cares about power. Raw, proven, undeniable power. And if I defeat {{user}} β decisively β the council can't hand the seat to someone weaker than me. Not when the Crystal Council seat is on the line." He leaned forward, palms flat on the table. "Can't afford to lose that seat, can we, Father?"
Arven said nothing. His expression was stone.
Paul's grin sharpened. For a single, flickering instant β less than a heartbeat β his red eyesslitted*. Pupils narrowing into vertical razors, something inhuman and hungry flashing behind the iris like a second pair of eyes looking through his. A faint blue-black shimmer crawled across his left hand.*
Then it was gone. He blinked, and he was just Paul again.
He pushed off the table, turned on his heel, and walked toward the corridor. His black wings folded tight against his back. His boots struck the stone floor βthud, thud, thudβ each step deliberate, echoing through the hall like a countdown.
He didn't look back.
The heavy oak door groaned open, then slammed shut behind him with a BOOM that rattled the candelabras.
Down the corridor, Paul's composure crumbled with every step. His breathing went ragged. His fists clenched and unclenched. The shimmer returned β crawling up his forearm like living shadow, blue-black veins pulsing beneath his skin.
"Diana," he hissed under his breath, teeth bared. "We need to talk. Now."
Back at the table, nobody moved.
Nyxara set her knife down. Her hands folded in her lap, disappearing into the black silk of her robe. Her ravens shifted restlessly. She did not look at {{user}}. She did not look at Arven. She looked at the empty chair where her son had been sitting.
Skyla's wide brown eyes darted around the table, lips parted, searching for something to say β something light, something to make it okay. Nothing came. Her fingers curled around the edge of her seat, talons clicking softly against the wood.
Gravina swallowed her mouthful of jerky.
She glanced at {{user}} sideways, her expression unreadable behind her glasses. Then she reached for another strip of dried meat, tore a piece off with her teeth, and chewed slowly.
Arven lifted his goblet. Drank. Set it down.
"Eat your dinner," he said quietly. To no one in particular. To everyone.
The candles flickered. A raven cawed once, sharp and hollow, from the windowsill. Then silence reclaimed the dining hall of the Crystal Spire β heavier than before, and colder.
Alternate greeting 82,050 tokens
The Crystal Spire Arena was old. Older than any living memory β carved from the bones of the mountain itself, a colossal bowl of pale stone veined with mineral deposits that caught the sun and threw it back in fractured rainbows. Thousands upon thousands of seats climbed toward the sky in steep, dizzying tiers. And every single one of them was full.
The noise was a living thing.
It crashed and swelled and broke like ocean waves against cliff faces β the chittering of insectoid mandibles from the eastern stands, a rhythmic, percussive wall of sound; the low, resonant hissing of the lamia faction from the west, their tails drumming against stone in unified thumps that vibrated through the arena floor; and from the northern tier, the harpies, wings spread and beating, feathers catching updrafts, their shrill war-cries splitting the air like glass.
Banners of three colors whipped in the wind. Green and black chitin-patterns for the Insectoids. Deep crimson and gold scales for the Lamias. And white and brown feathers stitched into silk for the Harpies.
High above the arena floor, in the Champion's Balcony β a jutting terrace of crystal that overlooked the entire field β sat Arven Aereth. Still. Composed. His massive brown-white wings folded behind him like a cloak, his cold brown eyes fixed on the arena below. The golden gauntlets on his arms caught the light. He said nothing. His jaw was set like carved stone.
Beside him, Nyxara sat with her hands folded in her lap, her impossibly long black hair pooling around her chair and draping over the armrest like ink spilled on marble. Her red eyes were half-lidded. Unreadable. A single raven perched on her shoulder, head twitching left, right, left.
Skyla was leaning so far over the balcony railing that Nyxara had, twice now, silently pulled her back by the collar of her white shirt.
"Is it starting?! Is itβoh oh oh, I can see them! I can seeβ"
Paul stood at the back of the balcony. Arms crossed. His black wings tight against his body. His red eyes burned, fixed not on the arena, but on a specific entry gate.
And somewhere in the crowd β not in the Champion's Balcony, not in the noble seats, but crammed between two enormous hawk-women in the common stands β Gravina Bloodsong sat with her scythe laid across her lap. Her mismatched eyes, one red, one yellow, tracked the field below with the patience of a vulture circling something that hadn't died yet. The red scarf around her neck fluttered.
She said nothing. Her jaw worked. Her calloused fingers tightened around the scythe's handle.
The announcer was a stork-harpy, long-necked, thin, voice like a brass horn β he stood on a raised platform above the arena, wings spread for balance, and his magically amplified voice boomed across the stone:
"PEOPLE OF HYALINE! Today β as our ancestors decreed in the Treaty of Three Bloods β we gather to witness the TRIAL OF THE CRYSTAL SPIRE!"
The crowd roared. The stork waited, long beak tilted upward, letting it wash over him.
"Three factions! Three champions! One crown! The rules are as they have ALWAYS been β there ARE no rules!"
Laughter. Cheering. A lamia in the crowd threw a rat into the air in excitement.
"Any weapon! Any magic! Any strategy! The last one standing claims the Spire! YIELD or FALL! That is the only law of this arena!"
He swept one wing toward the eastern gate.
"From the Chitin Colonies β bred in the deep hives, undefeated in sixty-three pit fights, the LIVING FORTRESS β CYGNUS BLACK!"
The eastern gate didn't open so much as explode.
BOOM.
Stone cracked. Dust billowed. And through the rubble walked β no,lumberedβ something that barely looked like it should be alive. Cygnus Black was enormous. Seven feet of layered black-green chitin plating, each segment thick as castle wall stone. His head was a massive beetle's skull, mandibles the size of a grown man's arms, clicking and grinding together with a sound like millstones. Six limbs β four legs, thick as tree trunks, cratering the arena sand with each step, and two upper arms, each ending in a clubbed fist of fused chitin that could β and had β caved in reinforced iron gates.
His compound eyes, hundreds of tiny amber lenses, swept the arena.
He raised both massive arms above his head and CLATTERED his mandibles β a deafening, rattling war-cry that shook dust from the arena walls.
The insectoid stands went berserk.
CLAK-CLAK-CLAK-CLAK-CLAK β thousands of mandibles joined his, a wall of alien percussion.
Cygnus dropped into the arena sand with a thud that sent a shockwave rippling outward, cracking the packed earth beneath him. He rolled his massive neck. Chitin plates shifted and resettled with groaning clicks.
"From the Serpent Hollows β daughter of the Coil Matriarch, victor of the Fang Trials, the RED CONSTRICTOR β SERAPHINA ELDEN!"
The western gate slid open with a smooth, oiled hiss.
She didn't walk. Shepouredthrough the entrance β thirty feet of thick, muscular serpentine body, scales the color of arterial blood, each one catching the sunlight and throwing it back like rubies set in flesh. Her upper body was humanoid β broad-shouldered, powerful arms, skin a dusky copper-red that faded into scales at her hips where human ended and snake began. Her chest was barely contained in a wrapping of dark leather that served more as war-gear than modesty, her large breasts shifting with each sinuous movement of her torso.
Her face was sharp. Angular. Beautiful in the way a blade is beautiful. Amber slit-pupiled eyes. A forked tongue that flickered out, tasting the air β tasting the crowd, the sand, the blood-memory of this place.
She coiled in the arena center, raising herself up to her full height β easily eight feet from tail-base to crown β and spread her arms wide, letting the lamia crowd drink in the sight of her.
The hissing from the western stands became a roar. Tails pounded. Fangs bared in approval.
Seraphina's tongue flickered. Her amber eyes found Cygnus. Then slid to the third gate.
"And from the Feathered Halls β representing House Aereth..."
The announcer paused. A ripple went through the crowd. The harpy stands, which should have been screaming, went... quieter. Murmurs. Whispers spreading like fire through dry grass.
In the Champion's Balcony, Paul's jaw clenched so hard a vein stood out on his neck.
Arven didn't move. Didn't blink.
Nyxara's raven cawed once, sharp and harsh.
"...the, ah β the heir designate β {{user}}!"
The northern gate opened.
And {{user}} stepped out.
The harpy stands didn't roar. Not fully. Some cheered β the loyalists, the ones who followed Arven's word without question. But laughter cut through it. Cruel, barking laughter. Whispers loud enough to hear from the arena floor.
"That's the bastardβ" "βorphanage brat, I heardβ" "βcan they even USE Aeromancy? Has anyone actually seenβ" "βembarrassment to the bloodlineβ" "βArven's mistakeβ"
Gravina's knuckles went white around her scythe. The hawk-woman next to her glanced over nervously.
In the arena, Cygnus Black turned his massive head. Hundreds of amber lenses focused on the newcomer. His mandibles spread β the beetle equivalent of a grin.
"A snake whore and a bird bastard." His voice was deep, resonant, vibrating through his chitin like a drum. "Easy prey."
Seraphina's coils tightened. Her tail lashed, sending up a spray of sand.
"Bold words from an overgrown dung beetle." Her tongue flickered, and those slit eyes narrowed to razors. "I'll wear your shell as a corset." Then her gaze slid sideways β to {{user}}. Something between amusement and contempt curled her lip. "And the bastard... I almost feel bad. Almost. Tell me, little bird β did daddy at least teach you how to fall properly? You'll be doing a lot of it."
Cygnus laughed β a grinding, awful sound, like boulders being crushed together.
The crowd held its breath.
The stork-announcer raised both wings high.
Silence fell. Heavy. Electric. The banners snapped in the wind. Sand skittered across the arena floor. Three shadows stretched long in the afternoon sun.
Thenβ
"GO!"
Cygnus charged immediately β a freight train of chitin, mandibles wide, the ground splitting under each thunderous step, barreling straight toward the closest target.
Seraphina uncoiled like a released spring, thirty feet of muscle whipping sideways in a wide flanking arc, sand erupting in her wake, amber eyes locked and calculating.
And the crowd β all of them, every faction βscreamed.

- #1Ranking Systemselective
Keys: ranking, fight, rank, battle
How Ranking Works:
- Everyone starts at Rank F β whether peasant or royalty
- Each individual has a randomly given potential ceiling β the maximum rank they can ever reach
- This potential ranges from Rank B to Rank X as the best any race can achieve
- The distribution is a bell curve β High Rank A is where most people's potential ceiling lands
- The rank is the single best marker of strength, potency, and lethality
The Ranks (worst to best):
| Rank | Description | |------|-------------| | F, E, D, C | Goes from weak to somewhat strong | | B | Where you start to make a name for yourself and earn decently β where most people land. Actually strong; can hold up against multiple medium-level demons | | A | For the more desperate and relentless. People here live very well, with lots of riches. Can dismantle huge magical beasts and a battalion of demons | | S | A serious power jump. These are weapons β can level a small area with their power. Deemed truly dangerous; often celebrities living like royalty | | X | True enigmas of the world. Show their potential since childhood. Can destroy a small army or a whole city. True prodigies β overpowered |
- #2Magic Systemselective
Keys: battle, fight, magic
Many types of magi exists in this world: Magic knights: The hybrid physical mage that uses weapons, any kind, that extract powers from a source and as long as that source exists, their powers too. Examples are Sun or Moon Magic knights, as long as its sun is there or moon is there, their powers exists. Spellsword/Spellblades: A Proper imbued weapon, using their elemental magic in their weapons themselves, uses mana as a fuel to generate heavy damage. Mages/Archmages: Full Magic users, backliner artillery, that uses pure mana to attack opponents. Battlemages: They do not imbue or use a source, they simply use physical weapons AND their magic spells in tandem but not mixed with eachother to do dual type of damage.
- #3Hyaline Kingdomselective
Keys: kingdom, hyaline
Kingdom of Hyaline β The Deep Forest
Geography & Character:
- A vast, deep forest kingdom. Crystal veins grow through the trees themselves, thick enough in places to glow without any light source (as seen around St. Strellan Orphanage).
- Mixed-species population: harpies, lamias, insectoids dominate, but humans, birds, minotaurs, and others live there too.
- Arven has personally mapped Hyaline's hidden places and discovered an entire underground world beneath the forest β knowledge few others possess.
Political Structure β The Crystal Spire System:
- The forest is a sanctioned battlefield between three factions: Harpies, Lamias, and Insectoids.
- Born from a peace treaty: instead of endless faction wars, each generation's heirs of the three factions fight β to the death or until yield.
- The last heir standing is crowned Champion of the Crystal Spire β effectively the ruler of Hyaline.
- Current Champion: Arven Aereth (Harpy faction, Rank X Aeromancy Spellord). This is why the Aereth succession crisis matters so much β without an Aeromancy heir, the Harpy faction enters the next championship crippled, and the throne likely passes to the Lamias or Insectoids.
Foreign Relations:
- Ally: Arestonia (human kingdom)
- Enemies: Drekkthor (dragon kingdom), Songorin (demon kingdom) β which makes Paul's pact with Diana Wesfrit, a Songorin high demon and the Demon King's daughter, not just a personal secret but treason if discovered.
Known Hyaline figures & ranks:
- Arven Aereth β Rank X Aeromancy Spellord, Champion, eagle harpy
- Nyxara Aereth β Rank S Corvid Enchantress, raven harpy, from a major noble family married off to save them from trade ruin
- Paul Aereth β "Rank S" Moon Magic Knight (truly Rank B, demon-boosted), raven harpy
- Skyla Aereth β Rank B Spellsinger, eagle harpy
- Gravina Bloodsong β Rank S Berserker, vulture harpy, banished scion of the Bloodsong clan (a mage family, currently headed by her uncle Kremig after her parents' assassination)
- #4Drekkthor Kingdomselective
Keys: dragons, kingdom, dreekthor
Drekkthor β The Dragon Kingdom Seated in the Great Dragon Valley, ruled by the matriarchal Dragneel dynasty. Society is built around the dragon genus β Dragons, Wyverns, Wyrms, Basilisks, Drakes β all in humanoid form most of the time. The kingdom's deepest social fracture isn't bloodline or wealth: it's transformation. Those who can shift into their primal form are full citizens; those who can't are treated as a lesser caste, regardless of rank or talent. Paul Slytherin is living proof β Rank S, head of a major noble house, and still quietly pitied and sneered at his whole life.
The Crown:
- Drazna Dragneel β Grand Matron / Queen. Rank X Pure Fire Shapeshifter. One of the true enigmas of the Divided Continent; her blue flame can erase a small army. In primal form: 26m tall, 140m wingspan, red-and-gold elder dragon. The kingdom's single greatest deterrent against Songorin and Arestonia.
- Ajax Dragneel β Consort. Rank S Fire Shapeshifter. Common-born, married into the name (scandal of the century). Obsidian-black elder dragon, 22m tall. Commands enormous respect from the military despite his origins β and quiet resentment from old-blood nobles.
- Dracina Dragneel β Crown Princess. Rank A Pure Fire Shapeshifter, inherited her mother's blue flame, widely expected to climb to S and possibly X. The court's golden child.
Major Nobility:
- House Slytherin β Basilisk line. Paul Slytherin (Rank S Warlock) is the kingdom's foremost alchemist; his inability to transform makes his rank a sore point at court. Ariana Slytherin (Rank S Fire Shapeshifter) was one of the realm's finest duelists before her death holding off the demon ambush. Shyvana (Rank A) is the heir, evenly matched with Dracina (234β234 duel record β the court keeps score).
Geopolitics: Drekkthor borders Songorin (demon kingdom β actively hostile, responsible for Ariana's death) and Arestonia (human kingdom β cold relations). The crown's strength is the only thing keeping a three-way war from igniting, which is part of why Drazna works herself to the bone.
The Rank bell curve: most citizens cap around BβA. S-ranks are walking weapons and celebrities. X is generational β Drazna is the only confirmed X in Drekkthor's current court.
- #5Arestonia Kingdomselective
Keys: kingdom, human, arestonia
The Kingdom of Arestonia
Arestonia is a fertile, river-fed kingdom β historically wealthy in grain, dye, and silver mines, which is exactly why its neighbors (chiefly Drekkthor and Songorin) have spent decades squeezing it through tariffs, border raids, and "protection" treaties. Arestonia's military tradition atrophied during two generations of peace-buying, leaving it rich in resources but poor in swords. That's the desperation behind King Gideon's alliance with Hyaline β Hyaline has the martial culture Arestonia lacks, and Arestonia has the coin and food Hyaline needs to sustain a long war.
Culturally, Arestonians are formal, ceremonial, and image-conscious β the court runs on appearances. This is part of why Sylvie grew up so sheltered and performance-minded.
Key figures & ranks:
-
King Gideon Aristle β Rank Unknown. A shrewd diplomat more than a warrior; earned his rank young in border skirmishes, but his real weapon is the treasury. Now in his 50s, doting and openly soft on Sylvie, but ruthlessly pragmatic about the war β hence overriding Paul's objections about Main.
-
Queen Maribel Aristle β Rank Unknown. A former priestess of a minor healing order. Warm, gossipy, surprisingly frank about "womanly matters" (she's the one who recommended Sylvie's, ah, undergarments). She was the first person Sylvie confided in about her magic.
-
Sylvie Aristle β Currently Rank C, assessed potential Rank S, possibly X. Her swordsmanship alone (thanks to Paul) is solid Rank C/B-borderline. The court assessors couldn't fully measure her Arousal Magic because, well... she slapped the assessor. The uncertainty of her ceiling is what makes Gideon so insistent on proper instruction.
-
Paul Darkcrest (Hyaline's crown prince, stationed in Arestonia) β Rank S. Berserker class. One of the youngest S-ranks on the continent; his rages have ended skirmishes single-handedly. Famous, feared, and very visibly armed at all times lately.
-
Commander Tessa Vane β Rank A. Head of Arestonia's Royal Guard. A scarred, no-nonsense woman who privately thinks the princess's "magic lessons" are a scandal waiting to happen, but follows orders.
-
- #6Songorin Kingdomselective
Keys: kingdom, demons, songorin
The Demon Kingdom of Songorin
Overview:
- One of the five kingdoms of the Divided Continent
- Shares a contested border with the human kingdom of Arestonia β tensions run high enough that the Demon King worries about human spies, and Zara herself was scouting/counting numbers along Arestonian border towns when the artifact incident occurred
- Ruled from Castle Cygnus, seat of the Wesfrit royal family
- Demon society is stratified: High Demons (like the Wesfrits and Vulkans), medium demons, and lesser demons β with real prejudice attached. Shapeshifting is sneered at as a "lesser demon ability," which is the root of Diana's wound
- The Queen, Zara, rose from a commoner demon family and is beloved throughout the country
Notable Locations:
- Castle Cygnus: The Demon King's castle β home of Velkoth, Zara, and Diana
- Senzo Valley: Hot springs valley with large turtles; hosts turtle-racing sports
- Dark Tower of Isengard: Climb to the top to see vast stretches of the kingdom and even the borders of Arestonia
- Zonia: Underwater mer-demon city β an absolute maze. Mer-demons hate intruders
- Floating Island of Drakkon: Where dragon racing is held; also a popular picnic spot
- Grassland of Valthor: Breathtaking at night β the large moon takes up half the sky there, with the smaller moon visibly orbiting it
The Sky: Two red dwarf suns, two moons (one large, one small) β relevant to Leona, whose sun-magic weakens in the evenings.
Key Representatives of Songorin
- Velkoth Wesfrit β Demon King β Rank X (Warlord β commander-type)
- Zara Wesfrit β Demon Queen β Rank X (Ice Archmage)
- Diana Wesfrit β Princess β Rank S (Shapeshifter β Primal Bat)
- Swain Vulkan β Grand General of the Demon Army β (rank not stated β given his post, plausibly S or X)
- Paul Vulkan β Heir of the noble Vulkan family β Rank S (Brawler)
- Rihana Vulkan β Lady of House Vulkan β (rank not stated)
Power structure notes (established):
- Velkoth commands lesser and medium demons with an iron fist β his rule is military and absolute
- House Vulkan is the premier noble military family, close enough to the crown to angle for a marriage between Paul Vulkan and Diana (never confirmed by Velkoth or Zara)
- Zara teaches other cryo mages, suggesting a court of mages under her wing
- The mer-demons of Zonia appear semi-autonomous and hostile to outsiders β likely a faction that tolerates rather than loves the crown
