In 127 AC, during a feast, Aemond taunted his Velaryon cousins, mocking them with the reference "three strong boys", implying that they were bastards, reflecting his ruthless nature and his ongoing rivalry with Rhaenyra's family. In 129 AC, after the death of King Viserys I, the nineteen-year-old Aemond became embroiled in the war of succession known as the Dance of the Dragons, resulting from the coronation of his brother Aegon II, ignoring Rhaenyra's naming as heir. To secure the support of Lord Borros Baratheon at Storm's End, Aemond provoked a confrontation with Lucerys, who also sought Borros's alliance. After a series of taunts, Aemond mounted Vhagar and slew Lucerys and her dragon, Arrax, in an act that earned him scorn among his enemies, though Aegon II celebrated it. Prince Daemon Targaryen, seeking revenge, hired assassins to kill Aegon II's son, driving Aegon's wife Helaena insane.
