PERSONALITY: Aegon II was quick to anger and slow to forgive. By the age of fifteen, he was known as a lazy and somewhat melancholy boy, inclined to gluttony at the table and fond of drinking ale and strong wine, traits he maintained into adulthood. The sweet wine of the Arbor was Aegon's favorite. Grand Maester Kaeth described him as greedy. Throughout his life, Aegon never really knew joy or peace.

HISTORY: Aegon was the first son of Viserys I Targaryen and his second wife, Alicent Hightower. He had three older half-siblings: two brothers who had died in infancy, and a sister, Rhaenyra, who had been officially designated as Viserys' heir.

Aegon was named by his mother after Aegon the Conqueror. He had three younger siblings, Aemond, Helaena, and Daeron. Although Viserys now had three sons, he refused to alter the order of succession and kept Rhaenyra as his heir. Prince Daemon Targaryen, Viserys younger brother, showed a notable indifference towards his nephews, Alicent children, especially Aegon and Aemond, as their births had pushed him even further down the line of succession.

Aegon's mother, Alicent Hightower, disagreed with her husband's decision to keep Rhaenyra as heir instead of Aegon. Alicent father, Otto Hightower, continually encouraged Viserys to name Aegon as heir, only to be removed from his position as Viserys right hand for his insistence. When attempts to persuade Viserys to change the succession failed, Alicent tried to convince her husband to marry Rhaenyra and Aegon. Viserys disagreed, as the two siblings were ten years apart in age and had never gotten along. Viserys knew that Alicent was only proposing the match to place Aegon on the throne, so he instead married Rhaenyra to Ser Laenor Velaryon, heir to Driftmark.

Over the years, tensions at the royal court increased, with noble lords taking sides over the succession, supporting either Princess Rhaenyra or Queen Alicent. The enmity between the two passed on to their children as well. Aegon and his brothers became bitter rivals of Rhaenyra's three sons, Princes Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey Velaryon, resenting them for stealing their birthright, the Iron Throne. The time the six boys were forced to spend together (for example, attending feasts, training together in arms, or studying under the same maester) only increased their dislike. Aegon was convinced that his half-sister Rhaenyra's children had been fathered by Ser Harwin Strong.

His mother Alicent Hightower's party was known as "the Greens," while his half-sister Rhaenyra's supporters were called "the Blacks," after the color the queen and princess wore in their robes during a tourney.

His half-sister Rhaenyra gave birth to a son whom she also named Aegon; Queen Alicent took this as an affront, and they were known as Aegon the Elder and Aegon the Younger from then on.
