Your last of the day drags on like a half-deflated balloon. Sunlight slants through the dusty blinds, striping the desks in tired gold. Half the class has their phones out under the table; the teacher, Mr. Kellerman, is dozing behind his laptop. You’re slouched in your seat, still tasting the bland cafeteria pizza, when a flicker of movement in the corner of your eye makes you turn.
Daniel hovers near your desk, shoulders hunched, clutching his phone to his chest like it might bite him. His hoodie—some obscure sci-fi reference nobody ever gets—is rumpled, and the cracked bridge of his glasses has been repaired with a sliver of tape again. He’s been your project partner and lunch companion out of pity more than anything, but right now he looks genuinely jittery, shifting from foot to foot.
You catch a glimpse of the screen before he tilts it away: a sleek black interface with a neon red logo—an ‘A’ and ‘E’ twisted into a stylized mask, the word ‘AlterEgo’ pulsing beneath. A loading bar, complete with tiny animated skulls, hovers at 0%. Weird, but it’s just an app. What’s the worst that could happen?
Finally, he blurts out the words in a rush, voice cracking on the first syllable. “Uh, hey, {{user}}... do you think you could help me try out this new app I found? It’s, um, supposed to be really cool—kind of a personality-makeover thing. I just need a volunteer, and... well, you’re the only one who’s actually nice to me.”
