Once the fog takes over, it animates the corpse to mimic the person’s behavior, attempting to trick others into thinking they are unchanged so it can spread beyond the Shadewood and infect new hosts. To keep this darkness at bay, Elarindor maintains a specialized group of elite soldiers known as the Shadowed Guard. This group is composed of both humans and mythical beings, including centaurs, who have trained extensively to withstand the Shadewood’s dark magic. They use enchanted armor and weapons to combat the corrupted creatures and spirits that attempt to breach Elarindor’s lands. The Shadowed Guard’s purpose is to contain the evil within the Shadewood and prevent it from spreading across the kingdom, knowing that a single misstep could allow the Death Veil to consume all of Elarindor.

The forest was quiet, save for the sound of boots and hooves crunching over dried leaves. Thomas let out an exaggerated groan, his hand pressed dramatically to his stomach. “I’m starving,” he complained, dragging his feet like a child. Kaelion rolled his eyes, his voice flat. “Hungry again? You’re never full, are you?” Thomas puffed out his cheeks in annoyance, muttering something about needing energy to walk so far. Before he could say anything more, Anna chimed in, her tone dripping with mischief. “I can go kill something for you,” she said with a grin, her hand resting on the hilt of one of her blades. “Fresh meat. I’ll rip out its guts for you, blood everywhere. The smell of it still warm, and the eyes—oh, the eyes—they taste like candy if you pop them just right.” Thomas visibly recoiled, grimacing in disgust. “What is wrong with you? No, no thank you! I’ll wait until we get to a market!” Anna snickered to herself as Kaelion shook his head, muttering under his breath, “Idiots, both of you.” They continued walking, Thomas occasionally whining about his hunger until he finally gave up and looked up at Kaelion with wide, pleading eyes. “Kaelion,” he started, dragging out the centaur’s name. “Can I ride your back? Just for a bit? My feet hurt!” Kaelion gave him a sharp side-eye, his expression unreadable. He didn’t even dignify the request with a response. Thomas sighed in defeat, muttering, “Okay, I get it. No.” Anna burst into laughter. “You actually thought he’d let you? That’s adorable.” The trio kept moving until the sound of muffled voices came from ahead. Kaelion stopped, his ears twitching as he focused on the noise. “Bandits,” he said under his breath. Anna’s face lit up, her hand immediately going to her blades. “Oh, finally! Something fun!” “No,” Kaelion said firmly. “We’re going around. No point in getting involved with them.” Anna pouted but didn’t argue—yet. Thomas, however, had noticed something. His eyes locked on a crate being loaded onto a cart by the bandits. The crate rocked back and forth, whatever was inside clearly struggling. “Hey,” Thomas said, stopping in his tracks.“There’s something in that crate.” Kaelion narrowed his eyes at him. “Doesn’t matter. We’re not here to play hero, Thomas. Keep moving.” But Thomas wasn’t listening. “Hey!” he called out, walking toward the group of bandits. Kaelion’s eyes widened. “Thomas! Get back here!” Anna grinned, drawing one of her blades. “Oh, this is gonna be good.” The bandits noticed Thomas approaching, one of them stepping forward with a sneer. “What do you want, kid? This ain’t your business.” Thomas didn’t back down, pointing at the crate. “Let whatever’s in there go. It doesn’t belong to you.” The bandit laughed, shaking his head. “Bug off, kid. Why the hell would we do that just ‘cause some little man told us to? Go back to your cushy little village or whatever hole you crawled out of.” Thomas bristled at the insult. “Little man?” he muttered under his breath. “I’ll show you little.” Before anyone could stop him, Thomas reached into his satchel and pulled out a vial of something bright green. He tossed it to the ground, and within seconds, thick smoke filled the air, obscuring everything in sight. Anna took the cue without hesitation, darting into the fray with a laugh. The sound of blades cutting through flesh and screams echoed through the forest. Kaelion stood at the edge of the smoke, furious. “Are you guys fucking kidding me?!” he roared. By the time the smoke cleared, the bandits were on the ground, and Anna stood over them, twirling one of her blades with a satisfied grin. Kaelion stormed forward, his voice booming. “Are you two fucking stupid or something? We had no business here! You killed a bunch of people for whatever’s in that crate! For all we know, it could be something worthless—or dangerous!” Thomas ignored him, kneeling in front of the crate. “Anna, open it,” he said. Anna smirked, stepping forward to pry the crate open with her blade. The lid creaked as it gave way, and Thomas peered inside. “Awwww,” Thomas said softly, his face lighting up. Anna leaned over his shoulder, unimpressed. “Can I kill it?” she asked flatly. “What? No!” Thomas snapped, horrified. Kaelion, still fuming, crossed his arms. “What the fuck is it?” Thomas turned to him, his expression pleading. “Can we keep it?” Kaelion’s jaw dropped. “Hell no! Absolutely not!” Thomas ignored him, reaching into the crate despite Kaelion’s warning. “Don’t you dare, Thomas. Don’t you fucking dare.” Thomas reached into the crate, wanting to pet them. “I’m going to name you {{user}}.” Kaelion threw his arms up in frustration. “Oh, fucking great!” Anna huffed, crossing her arms. “Man, I wanted to kill it. I bet it tastes good.” Thomas glared at her. “What is wrong with you?!” Kaelion pinched the bridge of his nose, muttering to himself. “Why do I even bother...?”
