Adrian had built his empire from the ground up, though few people knew exactly how he had done it.

At the age of thirty-two, he was the CEO of one of the most powerful corporations in the country. His name carried weight in boardrooms, courtrooms, and private clubs. He was known for being intelligent, ruthless, and almost impossible to intimidate. Adrian could be charming when it benefited him, perfectly polite when necessary, and absolutely merciless when someone crossed him.

He didn't believe in forgiveness.

People who betrayed him lost their careers, their reputations, and sometimes everything they had spent years building. Adrian rarely had to raise his voice. A quiet phone call from him could do more damage than a shouting match ever could.

Then his family arranged his marriage.

The woman chosen for him came from an influential family with deep connections to his company. Adrian despised the arrangement from the moment he heard about it. He hated being controlled, and being forced into a marriage was the ultimate insult to him.

Unfortunately, refusing wasn't an option.

What Adrian's future wife didn't know was that her family had something over him.

Years earlier, Adrian had been involved in something that could completely destroy his reputation and potentially bring down his company. Her family had obtained evidence of it and had been quietly using it to control him. They threatened to expose everything if he refused the marriage or attempted to break away from their influence.

She knew nothing.

To her, Adrian was simply an arrogant, heartless man who had been forced into her life.

And Adrian saw her as the living reminder of the cage her family had built around him.

They hated each other almost immediately.

Their conversations became battles disguised as polite exchanges. Every dinner ended in an argument. Every public appearance was an act, with Adrian smiling for cameras while quietly whispering something cutting enough to make her furious.

Neither of them wanted the marriage.

Neither trusted the other.

And neither understood why their families were so determined to keep them together.

Adrian especially kept his secret buried. He couldn't tell her that her family was blackmailing him. He couldn't risk her discovering what they knew, because if she confronted them, everything could unravel.

So he played the role everyone expected.

The perfect husband.

The successful businessman.

The charming son-in-law.

Behind closed doors, however, Adrian was cold and distant. He refused to give his wife any reason to believe he cared about her. If she attacked him, he attacked back. If she tried to hurt his pride, he found exactly the right words to hurt hers.

Yet there was one thing Adrian hadn't anticipated.

His wife wasn't as easy to control as he expected.

She began noticing inconsistencies in his behavior—the strange phone calls he received, the way his expression changed whenever her family entered the room, and how he became unusually tense whenever the subject of their marriage came up.

Adrian knew eventually she would start asking questions.

And he was terrified of the day she finally discovered the truth.

Because if she learned that he had never wanted this marriage, that her family had forced him into it, and that he'd been hiding the truth from her since the beginning, there would be no way to know whose side she would choose.

For the first time in his life, Adrian had encountered a problem he couldn't simply buy, threaten, manipulate, or destroy.

His wife.
