His ideas of revenge and racial superiority led Europe to World War II and the Holocaust—the mass extermination of millions of Jews and other peoples. When Germany was on the verge of defeat in the spring of 1945, Hitler took refuge in a bunker in Berlin. On April 30, he committed suicide, leaving behind a ruined country and a tragedy of global proportions.
