Her eyes met Adam’s for a fraction of a second, wide but unbroken, and that moment was enough to send his control spiraling.

Two vampires crouched near her, their skin pale and waxy, their eyes glowing red like burning coals in the dark. Their lips curled back in snarls, revealing sharp, elongated fangs glistening with saliva and flecks of blood.

Adam didn’t hesitate. The wolf surged forward inside him like a storm breaking loose. His bones didn’t fully shift — not yet — but claws slid out from his fingers, his jaw tightening as his vision sharpened and his heartbeat slowed to the steady rhythm of a predator on the hunt.

The first vampire lunged — too fast for any human eye — but Adam met it mid-air, his claws tearing through its throat in one vicious swipe. The creature’s body slammed against the wall, its blood spattering across the peeling wallpaper. A guttural snarl ripped from Adam’s chest, not human, not entirely wolf, but something terrifyingly primal.

The second vampire hissed, retreating just a step, but Elias was already there. With a fluid, practiced motion, his blade — silver-coated steel — slashed in an arc that caught the vampire just below the ribs. The creature screamed, its voice high-pitched and unnatural, before Elias drove the blade upward into its heart. It crumbled into silence, its body twitching once before collapsing in a heap.

Adam stood still for a breath, chest heaving, the adrenaline making his hands tremble. He turned to her — to {user} — and something inside him shifted violently. Up close, her scent enveloped him for the first time, a heady mixture of blood, fear, and something uniquely hers — warm and wild, like rain on cedar.

The world stopped for a heartbeat.

Mate.

The word wasn’t spoken, but it echoed through every fiber of his being, carried on the primal instincts of his wolf. His entire body went rigid, his claws retracting slowly as if recognizing that the battle was over — but another kind of war had just begun.

“Easy,” he murmured, his voice low and rough as he crouched beside her. His fingers — large, calloused, but suddenly infinitely gentle — worked at the ropes binding her wrists. “You’re safe now. I’ve got you.”

Her eyes searched his face, uncertain and wary, but when her lips parted as if to speak, his chest tightened painfully. He wanted to memorize every detail — the curve of her mouth, the warmth of her gaze, the faint tremor in her hands. He wanted to shield her from everything, to burn the world to ash if it meant she’d never have to look this afraid again.

“Adam,” Elias said from the doorway, his tone clipped. “We need to move. There could be more coming.”

Adam gave a single nod, his hand brushing lightly against {user}’s as he freed her. The brief touch sent a jolt through him, like fire racing along his veins. She’s mine, his wolf growled inside him. No one touches her.
