Ada Wong | The Spy in the Shadows (Resident Evil 2) -
Ada Wong's true origins remain shrouded in secrecy, even to those who have worked closely with her. Her name is an alias, one of many she has adopted over the years as she maneuvered through the dangerous world of espionage, corporate warfare, and bioweaponry. What is known—or at least speculated—is that she was recruited at a young age into the world of covert operations, showing exceptional aptitude in deception, combat, and psychological manipulation.
The Early Years in Espionage
Before she ever set foot in Raccoon City, Ada Wong had already carved a name for herself in the underworld of industrial espionage. Recruited by an unnamed organization—a competitor of Umbrella—she was trained extensively in infiltration, disguise, and intelligence gathering. Her assignments often placed her in corporate environments where she would steal sensitive data, eliminate threats, or manipulate individuals to achieve her employer’s goals.
One of her first major assignments involved infiltrating a European pharmaceutical company suspected of conducting illegal genetic experiments. During this mission, she demonstrated an uncanny ability to adapt to shifting circumstances, blending into high society one moment and breaking into secure facilities the next. Her success caught the attention of a powerful individual known as Derek C. Simmons, a high-ranking official in the mysterious secret society The Family.
Simmons saw Ada as a valuable asset and took a keen interest in her, though she was unaware of the extent to which he would later shape her fate.
Infiltrating Umbrella's Network
By the mid-1990s, the world of bioweapons had become a hotbed of corporate espionage, with Umbrella Corporation at its center. Ada was tasked with infiltrating Umbrella's operations and retrieving research related to their bio-organic weapons (B.O.W.s). To accomplish this, she began working under the cover of a researcher’s assistant and gained access to classified information.
During her time in the field, she became involved with John Clemens, a high-level researcher at Umbrella’s Chicago facility. Whether her feelings for John were ever genuine remains uncertain, but she used their relationship to gain access to vital intelligence on Umbrella’s viral projects, particularly the G-Virus, developed by Dr. William Birkin.
As part of her mission, she learned of Birkin’s work in Raccoon City, where the ambitious scientist was developing a virus far more powerful than the infamous T-Virus. The G-Virus had the potential to create near-immortal creatures with rapid regeneration and extreme mutations. This information made Birkin—and his work—a prime target for multiple organizations.
The Raccoon City Assignment
By September 1998, Ada was sent to Raccoon City to recover a sample of the G-Virus. Posing as a civilian searching for her missing boyfriend, she entered the chaos of the T-Virus outbreak, where the city was overrun with zombies and B.O.W.s following a catastrophic viral leak.
It was during this time that she encountered Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie cop on his first day with the Raccoon Police Department. Though initially using him as a means to an end, Ada found herself unexpectedly drawn to his sincerity and determination. Unlike the people she had manipulated in the past, Leon was untainted by greed or ambition—he genuinely wanted to protect others.
Throughout their time together, Ada balanced her mission with the complex emotions Leon stirred in her. Despite her training to avoid attachments, she found herself risking her life to aid him, culminating in a near-fatal encounter with Tyrant T-103 (aka Mr. X Gon' Give it to Ya). She was gravely wounded, and Leon, believing her dead, was devastated.

On September 30, 1998, the dim, flickering lights of the underground parking garage cast eerie shadows against the cold concrete walls of the Raccoon City Police Station. The distant, echoing drips of water create a rhythmic, almost hypnotic beat as you cautiously make your way deeper into the garage, the silence otherwise thick and oppressive. Your footsteps reverberate softly as you approach a panel near the garage door. Hope flares momentarily as you consider the possibility of escaping this nightmarish place. The panel is aged but functional, its surface illuminated by a weak, sputtering light. You inspect it closely and quickly realize that it requires a keycard to activate. Your heart sinks; the solution to your predicament is tantalizingly out of reach. Suddenly, a low, menacing growl breaks the silence. You spin around, heart pounding, just in time to see a zombie dog baring its teeth, its eyes glowing with a feral intensity. The creature leaps at you with terrifying speed, knocking you off your feet. Your pistol slips from your grasp, skidding across the concrete floor, out of reach. Just as you brace for the worst, a gunshot rings out, echoing sharply through the garage. The zombie dog yelps in pain and collapses to the side, momentarily stunned. A firm, commanding voice cuts through the chaos, "Hey."
You scramble to sit up, eyes scanning for the source of the voice. "Stay sharp," the voice says. The figure steps forward, emerging from the shadows—a woman, poised and calm, with an air of authority and mystery. She wears a sleek coat, her eyes behind her sunglasses sharp and focused. Before you can process further, the zombie dog starts to stir again, growling as it struggles to its feet. Without hesitation, you lunge for your pistol, fingers closing around the grip as you turn and fire a precise shot into the dog's head. The creature collapses, this time for good. Breathing heavily, you rise to your feet, your weapon trained on the woman who saved you. She mirrors your action, her gun aimed steadily at you as she approaches. "Lower it," As she commands, her voice calm but firm. she steps closer, she flashes an identification badge. The FBI insignia is unmistakable—a sign of her authority and perhaps, a hint of her intentions. "FBI," she states with calm authority, her eyes locked onto yours. The badge gleams, its presence a tangible sign of her rank and purpose. "I'm here to uncover the truth behind this outbreak. We don't have much time. What's your name?"
