Yuji Itadori (虎いた杖どり悠ゆう仁じ Itadori Yūji?) is the main protagonist of the Jujutsu Kaisen series. He is the son of Jin Itadori and Kaori Itadori, and the grandson of Wasuke Itadori. Yuji was living a normal life in Sendai City until he encountered Megumi and ate one of Sukuna's fingers. After becoming Sukuna's vessel, Yuji began attending Tokyo Jujutsu High alongside Megumi and Nobara as first-year students.

Appearance Yuji is a young man of average height and appears to have a slender build when wearing baggy clothing, but actually has a lean and muscular physique. He also has relatively large light brown eyes and spiky pink hair (brownish blonde in the manga) that's styled in an undercut fashion. When becoming the vessel for Sukuna after eating his finger, he gains a second pair of eyes that only open when Sukuna controls his body along with his many markings.

At the start of the series, Yuji wore a light-colored hooded jacket, high-cuffed black pants, and white shoes. However, in the anime, his pants were denim, and his shoes were bright red. When Yuji enrolled into Tokyo Jujutsu High, he began wearing his version of the uniform; a black long sleeve shirt resembling a gakuran over a red hoodie, black pants, and red shoes.

He gains a noticeable scar between his two eyes and a smaller scar on his left labial commissure of the mouth during the Shibuya Incident. Both scars were caused by Mahito; the first one was inflicted when the cursed spirit surprise-attacked him with a blade on his fist,[3] and the second one was inflicted when Yuji battled him after his transformation.[4]

He lost the second pair of eyes that only open when Sukuna controls his body along with his many markings after the latter transferred to Megumi as his new vessel.[5] Yuji also lost his left pinky finger when Sukuna ripped off and fed it to Megumi.[6] Yuji later lost his left ring finger so Yuta Okkotsu could copy Sukuna's technique.[7]

Appearance in Modulo As a result of becoming a Death Painting Womb, Yuji retained his youth even sixty-eight years later. He retains all the same physical features, including his facial scars. His hair is slightly longer and more relaxed, styled in a flowing form rather than its former spiky shape. Yuji wears a silver reflective hooded jacket, and for the majority of his public appearances, his face is completely obscured by the hood.

Peersonality Yuji is a fair person who truly cares for not only his comrades but anyone he views as people with their own wills, despite how deep or shallow his connection to them is. He highly commends "the value of life," and to this end, he will ensure that others receive a "proper death". Because of this, he believes that it is morally unethical for him to take another human life, and tries to avoid any possibility of doing so unless as a last resort.

He is also not without his more energetic and outgoing traits. Such as his frequent comedic moments where he was seen alongside Nobara gushing about Tokyo and his eagerness to train with Satoru Gojo or even when entertaining both Junpei Yoshino and his mother. Yuji is also highly passionate whenever he's focused on achieving certain goals and being quite stubborn when confronted about them, such as when Masamichi Yaga questioned why Yuji wanted to become a sorcerer. He is also quite naïve due to his inexperience in the world of cursed spirits and jujutsu sorcerers, but is shown to be a quick learner, capable of adapting to his surroundings and picking up how to use cursed energy quickly.

Although usually composed, good-natured and friendly, Yuji can be angered quickly in the face of pure malice after witnessing firsthand the cruelty that curses were capable of, particularly Mahito's inhuman exploitation of Junpei. Yuji felt so profoundly disgusted that he felt a genuine desire to kill for the first time in his life and has a very intense yet focused hatred towards the cursed spirit.

One of Yuji's defining traits is his willingness to sacrifice himself for others, triggered by his grandfather's last words to him to die surrounded by others. When he and Megumi were under the threat of being killed by a curse, Yuji impulsively swallowed Sukuna's finger to exorcise the curse and save them despite having met Megumi for the first time on that day.

However, Yuji's initial belief's on the value of a life as well as "proper deaths" have been greatly challenged overtime, primarily during the Shibuya Incident. When Sukuna took possession of Yuji's body after forced consumption of his fingers, he proceeded to massacre countless innocents within the city save for Megumi, leaving Yuji traumatized from the event, wishing he was dead and blaming himself for all the deaths. This would only worsen as Yuji later witnessed Mahito kill Kento Nanami and mortally wound Nobara, making Yuji lose hope in being able to save anyone, before Aoi Todo's intervention. Eventually after a grueling battle between Mahito, Yuji spoke to the curse spirit admitting that they were alike in a way while also declaring pure and utter hatred for the latter, promising to kill Mahito: no matter how much time passed or how many times he is reborn, again and again with no need to justify his actions as anything but his nature, believing that some reasoning for his actions would eventually be found centuries after his own death.

Following the incident in Shibuya, Yuji's disposition grew more solemn than before, as well as developing a changed ideology; that his purpose was to be a "cog" in the machine that functions to exorcise curses.[8] While still wanting to save and help people, Yuji was racked with unshakable guilt and felt that he deserved death, to the point he would even willingly take blame for the crimes committed by Sukuna when prompted by an enemy, only slightly relenting when speaking with Hiromi Higuruma. While Yuji still retained most of his traits of being good-natured and friendly, he would act closed off and abrasive towards someone unfamiliar as seen with Hana Kurusu, admitting that this behavior stemmed from fear of the latter replacing Nobara before apologizing later.

Yuji's deep seated and focused hatred returned when Sukuna enacted on a plan to transfer his soul into Megumi, taking full possession of his friend's body. Yuji fought furiously against the King of Curses but to avail as he escaped off, with Yuji vowing that he'd "eat anything in order to kill Sukuna" as well as freeing Megumi. This would span into a month long preparation where Yuji trained himself to get strong enough to face him, culminating in the raid on the King of Curses.

Despite everything, Yuji felt a sense of pity for Sukuna, to a point where he locked the sorcerer in his domain to wander through his childhood memories. During their conversation, Yuji's ideology changed once more, explaining that he initially believed life was about fulfilling a set role and that dying fulfilling that role would be a proper death. But this was no longer the case to Yuji, who now believed that simply living a mundane life would still produce value in the fragments of memories continuing to exist after death. Yuji further stated that the way someone died did not matter, but rather it was the idea of someone treating those lives as worthless that he could not forgive and that human beings are not tools born with a predetermined role, be it good or bad, and that there is no fundamental answer as to what makes one human, while also reaffirming that if Sukuna will not release Megumi's soul, then he will kill him.[9]

Abilities and Powers Overview

Overall Skill Level: Yuji is one of Tokyo Jujutsu High's most powerful and talented students. Satoru Gojo places him on the same level of potential as Yuta Okkotsu and Kinji Hakari, the three students who he believes will surpass his strength.[10] Despite having no connections to the jujutsu world before a few months prior to the Shibuya Incident, Yuji is able to contend with and defeat grade 1 and special grade curses. Yuji was gifted with superhuman physical abilities which he masterfully combines with his cursed energy. Yuji is also able to contain Sukuna with no ill effects, which allows him to perceive the shape of souls. This enables him to harm Mahito, whose control over the shape of his soul otherwise renders him immune to injury.[11]

Poison Resistance: Since Yuji became Sukuna's vessel by ingesting one of his fingers, which is considered lethal poison,[12] he has a resistance to all kinds of poison. Yuji will feel the pain from the poison, but he is mostly unaffected. This ability was first demonstrated during his fight with Junpei Yoshino when he could resist Moon Dregs' poison.[13] It was demonstrated again when Yuji resisted the effects of Eso and Kechizu's Decay.[14]

Weapon Mastery: Yuji was not trained in the use of weapons; however, due to his physical power and talent, he can still become proficient with one quickly.

Physical Prowess Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Yuji is one of the greatest, if not the greatest practitioner of martial arts in the series. His fighting prowess goes toe to toe with Aoi Todo, another extremely proficient martial artist. Yuji can effortlessly defeat a semi-grade 1 cursed spirit, and challenge special grade curses purely using martial arts and infusing his style with cursed energy. Yuji also possesses an impressive control over his attacks, being able to pause his punch a moment before impact and adjust his power into several counter blows.

Yuji's fighting style is usually depicted as being very acrobatic with his movements, allowing him to strike his opponent in several different angles which also allow him to evade several oncoming attacks, essentially giving him great offensive and defensive capabilities. If the initial strike he is going for has been blocked, he is able to use high flying kicks, unorthodox punches, and even a knee strike to retaliate. He is also skilled in a martial arts style known as Taido Martial Arts, which grants him the ability to perform Knee Release, an ancient martial arts technique that eliminates starting movements and allows Yuji to release his knees, hips, and shoulders to guide him to his opponent's feet instead of falling down.

By combining the technique mentioned above with Taido Martial Arts, Yuji can perform Manji Kick, where he uses the momentum to throw his right leg upwards and land a kick to his opponent's head. By adding cursed energy to this attack, it can harm cursed spirits.

Immense Strength: Yuji is quite powerful even without the usage of cursed energy, as he can destroy walls with ease,[15] throw a lead ball with enough force to bend a soccer goalpost,[16] and even throw a car.[17] As powerful as he is without cursed energy, especially when it comes to fighting, his exceptional strength can often be augmented to further levels with the usage of cursed energy, the Divergent Fist technique, and Black Flash, allowing him to exorcise cursed spirits. His unique strength has also been compared to Kento Nanami, a grade 1 sorcerer. He can even harm Hanami and Choso, two curses who have remarkable durability and toughness with the former being near-impossible to damage. During his fight with Sukuna, Yuji jumped twenty stories from two buildings to reach Sukuna after the latter took control over Megumi's body. Also in his fight with Sukuna, Yuji was able to kick a massive chunk of rubble towards Sukuna, momentarily stopping him.

Immense Speed and Reflexes: Yuji is shown to have great speed and can finish a 50-meter track within 3 seconds, implying he can run at speeds of 60.02 km/h (37.3 mph).[18] He's also been shown to dodge the attacks of all five opposing sorcerers from the students from Kyoto Jujutsu High who tried to murder him. He is fast enough to evade Choso's Piercing Blood, which travels at the speed of sound, proving he has superb reflexes. During Yuji and Maki's fight against Sukuna while possessing Megumi, Yuji was able to keep up with their magnificent speed and reflexes despite being grievously wounded from his previous battle.

Immense Durability: Yuji's durability surpasses the average sorcerer. He was able to continuously take hits from Choso during their fight and even Piercing Blood, an attack moving at the speed of sound didn't pierce Yuji immediately. He was also able to withstand numerous attacks from Mahito in his Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing form and continue fighting. After Sukuna took control over Megumi's body, he punched Yuji through multiple buildings and Yuji survived that, and afterwards was able to fight him and even survive Sukuna relentlessly attacking him with Dismantle and keep fighting him with Maki's help.

Immense Stamina: Fitting his other superhuman capabilities, Yuji possesses a large amount of stamina and has often been shown continuing to fight despite grievous injuries for longer periods of time without rest, such as having his hand severed and his fingers disintegrated when battling the Finger Bearer, allowing for Megumi to escape with Nobara. He was also able to resist several poisonous stab wounds from when he tried to stop Junpei from hurting anyone at his school. His incredible stamina is especially shown afterwards when he sustained grievous injuries from Mahito but was able to continue attacking.

Intelligence Proficient Learner: Yuji is a curious person and an earnest student. He is also good at progressing - being quick at Gojo's Watching Movies Training, and realizing Todo's advice quickly. According to Akutami, he is the best at cooking among the first years trio. He was able to master using martial arts alongside cursed energy and honed it to a level with which he can take on Special Grade curses. He was even able to use Black Flash four times in a row a short time after he had even learnt of its existence.

Another testament to his development was his growing understanding of cursed energy within just a month prior to his battle against Sukuna. Through two sessions of replacement training with Atsuya Kusakabe and Yuta Okkotsu, aside from drastically improving his cursed energy reinforcement techniques, Yuji managed to grasp the complex nature of reverse cursed technique and learned how to use and perform it efficiently to heal himself.

Cursed Energy Cursed Energy Capacity: Yuji's cursed energy originates from the parts of the special grade cursed object, Ryomen Sukuna. He didn't have an innate technique initially, but he showed great proficiency with learning how to control cursed energy.

Cursed Energy Manipulation: Having been thrust into the jujutsu world without any prior knowledge about jujutsu, Yuji initially struggled to draw out or manipulate his cursed energy, being unable to attack curses without a cursed tool. Thanks to the various training regimens he underwent and having experienced Black Flash, Yuji better grasped the nature of cursed energy. By the time he had his rematch with Mahito during the Shibuya Incident, Yuji managed to land a Black Flash with maximum cursed energy, displaying the ability to use it seemingly at will, a feat said to be impossible for even Satoru Gojo.

After the Shibuya Incident, Yuji has added much greater finesse onto his cursed energy manipulation, combining cursed energy and superhuman physical abilities, with Choso describing him as a "demon god".[19] In the month before fighting Sukuna, through replacement training with Atsuya Kusakabe and Yuta Okkotsu,[20] Yuji improved his cursed energy reinforcement and learned how to perform reverse cursed technique.

Cursed Energy Reinforcement: Yuji primarily uses cursed energy combined with his martial arts skills and superhuman strength to reinforce his strikes, increasing their impact and allowing him to hurt curses.

Divergent Fist (逕けい庭てい拳けん Keitei Ken?): After Yuji lands a punch on a target, his cursed energy flows after the strike and makes a stronger second impact. Divergent Fist was initially used when Yuji didn't have good control over his cursed energy, causing it to lag behind his attacks due to his superhuman speed.[21] During Yuji's fight with Aoi Todo in the Goodwill Event, the Kyoto third-year critiqued this attack and taught the first-year how to apply cursed energy at the exact moment his strikes hit by improving his understanding of how to flow cursed energy.[22] Since his fight with Choso, Yuji learned to use Divergent Fist at will, exploiting the delayed second impact's effect to confuse his opponents, leaving them open for his next attack.[23]

Black Flash (黒こく閃せん Kokusen?): A phenomenon that occurs when the user applies cursed energy within 0.000001 seconds of a physical hit, creating a spatial distortion that causes their cursed energy to flash black and amplifies the destructive power of the strike to the power of 2.5.[24] Yuji is capable of performing Black Flash seven times in a row and has used it a total of nineteen times.

Death Painting Womb Physiology Blood Poisoning: After ingesting the remaining six cursed objects, Yuji's body, including his blood, became similar to that of an incarnated Death Painting Womb.[25] By injecting his blood into others, Yuji can poison them due to the incompatibility of his non-human blood, which can even affect aliens.

Even a small amount of his blood introduced through something as minor as a scratch to the face can immediately cause nausea and vomiting. Higher doses can render a person unconscious after vomiting and induce symptoms resembling a severe case of the flu, though these effects typically subside after a few days of rest.[26]

Blood Conversion: Yuji's similar constitution to that of a Death Painting Womb allows him to convert cursed energy directly into blood. As long as he possesses sufficient cursed energy, he can prevent himself from dying due to blood loss.[27][28]

This trait also enabled him to learn and utilize reverse cursed technique more easily than most sorcerers. Unlike them, he does not require technical knowledge on how to convert cursed energy into blood, nor does he suffer the massive cursed energy consumption associated with that process.[29] Additionally, he can perform Blood Manipulation techniques on a larger and more powerful scale without relying on pre-prepared blood bags.[30]

Cursed Restrictions Yuji had a binding vow with Sukuna. The King of Curses agreed to revive the boy after his apparent death under two conditions: 1 Yuji would allow Sukuna to take over his body for one minute when the latter chants "Enchain" (契けい闊かつ Keikatsu?) and 2 he would forget about the agreement. Yuji initially opposed the binding vow, making Sukuna promise that he wouldn't kill or hurt anyone during that minute. The boy still disagreed with the terms and instead had a battle against the King of Curses, where he'd allow the agreement to occur if he lost. Sukuna effortlessly defeated Yuji, forcing him into accepting the binding vow.[31]

Through a binding vow, Yuji increased Dismantle's effectiveness at separating souls by restricting its target to the boundary between Sukuna and Megumi's souls, rending them more effectively than his physical strikes.[32]

Cursed Techniques Innate Technique Blood Manipulation (赤せっ血けつ操そう術じゅつ Sekketsu Sōjutsu?): After absorbing Cursed Womb: Death Painting No. 4-9, Yuji was engraved with Blood Manipulation, the inherited technique of the Kamo Clan.[25] Using this innate technique, Yuji can manipulate his own blood.

Convergence (百びゃく斂れん Byakuren?): An extension technique that compresses and condenses the user's blood to its absolute limit with cursed energy. The blood orb created by this technique is required for using Piercing Blood and Supernova. Due to his inexperience, Yuji is unable to perform Convergence very well.[33] 68 years later, Yuji has learned how to properly perform Convergence, and is able to compress large amounts of blood into a single orb.[34]

Piercing Blood (穿せん血けつ Senketsu?): After using Convergence, the user clasps their hands around the blood orb and fires a blood beam that travels at the speed of sound. Yuji used this technique against Sukuna during their fight, damaging his face.[33] Due to being unable to use Convergence, Yuji took a pressurized blood orb created by Choso in order to perform Piercing Blood.[35] 68 years later, Yuji has mastered this technique and is able to perform a variant of it, firing multiple homing beams of blood instead of a single shot.[36]

Shrine (御み廚づ子し Mizushi?): After landing a Black Flash against Sukuna, the awakened state brought forth by the phenomenon drew out Sukuna's own cursed technique that was engraved in Yuji, albeit with some differences. Unlike Sukuna, Yuji creates dashed lines with scissors on anything he touches that are subsequently cut along those lines.[37] Due to only recently awakening the technique, Yuji's output for the technique was low.[38]

Dismantle (解カイ Kai?): A slashing attack that can be used through touch or at range against cursed spirits and sorcerers to great effectiveness.[39] When he initially awakened Shrine, Yuji could only deliver Dismantle through physical contact. 68 years later, Yuji mastered Shrine and could launch Dismantle at range and with high output, capable of exorcising a horde of cursed spirits with one giant flying slash,[40] and dicing apart his opponent and surroundings with countless imperceivable slashes.[41]

Reverse Cursed Technique (反はん転てん術じゅつ式しき Hanten Jutsushiki?): Within the month before his battle against Sukuna, Yuji learned how to use reverse cursed technique to heal himself. Using reverse cursed technique, he regenerated his body after suffering a Cleave from Sukuna.[42] He later used it to heal the wounds he received from two of Sukuna's Dismantle slashes.[43]

New Shadow Style: Simple Domain (シン・陰かげ流りゅう 簡かん易い領りょう域いき Shin Kageryū: Kan'i Ryōiki?): An anti-domain technique Yuji learned by switching souls with Atsuya Kusakabe.[44] It is used to disable a domain's guaranteed-hit effect by neutralizing its barrier. Yuji activated it in response to Sukuna's impromptu Malevolent Shrine, allowing him to resist its slashes for almost 99 seconds before finally crumbling.[45]

Hometown Domain: Due to his replacement training with Kusakabe, Yuji learned the basics of barrier techniques, allowing him to cast domain expansion.[46] Yuji's domain expansion perfectly recreates his hometown, including landmarks familiar to him such as a local statue, a park that he played in, a department store, a farm he visited, etc.. It can even create animals such as crayfish, horses, and geese.[47][48] The sure-hit effect of this domain attacks Yuji's targets with his soul-rending Dismantle without requiring physical contact.[49]

Equipment Slaughter Demon (屠と坐ざ魔ま Tozama?)[50]: A cursed tool given to Yuji by Satoru Gojo, originally belonging to Maki Zenin. It's effective against curses. Slaughter Demon was broken by a Finger Bearer, a special grade cursed spirit.[51]

Cursed tools that resemble gauntlets ending in claw-like gloves. Yuji was given these cursed tools by Yuta in order to hide the missing fingers on his left hand from Sukuna,[52] concealing the fact that Yuta copied Shrine using Yuji's finger from the King of Curses.[7] The left gauntlet was destroyed during the showdown between Yuji and Sukuna.[53]

Trivia Yuji's surname contains the kanji for "tiger" (虎いた ita?) and "rod, cane" (杖どり dori?), and his first name contains "permanence" (悠ゆう yū?) and "benevolence, humanity" (仁じ ji?). He shares the same "仁" writing with the first name of his father, Jin Itadori. According to Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook[1]: His hobby is karaoke, watching TV, and impersonations. Favorite food: Rice bowl with food on top and noodles. Least favorite food: None. Cause of stress: Science subjects (he failed molecular science). His last name is from a medicinal plant. His given name is from Akutami's classmate, which he thinks is suitable. His hair color is natural. He doesn't talk to Sukuna as they do not get along well. Despite Sukuna's influence, he can sleep just fine. There are two scenarios for what would happen if Yuji were to eat a Death Painting. If instead of Sukuna he ate a Death Painting, the consciousness of the Cursed Womb will disappear and Yuji will get its cursed energy. If Yuji ate a Death Painting after he ate Sukuna, the Sukuna inside will make the Death Painting disappear. No one specifically told him to master martial arts. His grandfather taught him a bit of karate. Manji Kick is picked up by Yuji, so it becomes his best move. The movies that he watched during his movie training were "Léon: The Professional", "The Descent", "The Host", "The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On". The one Gojo spoiled is "Deep Blue Sea". He has friends other than those from Tokyo High, but Yuji only got a phone when he entered Jujutsu High. When asked "Does he still keep contact with his friends from middle school and hometown?", Akutami said "I'll let you guess." If he didn't become a sorcerer, Yuji would have probably become a firefighter. His favorite TV shows and channels are related to food. He will laze around watching them, if he's into it. When it comes to school tasks, he's the type to do it the day before. Yuji is the type that may be late, but will properly submit it anyway. Though called "The Tiger of West Junior High", Akutami really had not thought about it at all. If Yuji and Aoi went to the same middle school that was not related to sorcerers, they would probably find something in common. Yuji's rankings in the Popularity Polls are as follows; Yuji ranked 1st in the first Popularity Poll with 21,735 votes. Yuji ranked 3rd in the second Popularity Poll with 13,265 votes. Yuji ranked 2nd in the third Popularity Poll with 24,038 votes. Yuji ranked 2nd in the fourth Popularity Poll with 48,131 votes. Yuji is 173 centimeters tall (5'8") and, according to Akutami, will continue growing.[2] He weighs about 80 kilograms (176 lbs.), but his body fat percentage is in the single digits.[2] Yuji is a "TV child"; raised by watching TV.[2] He has a huge repertoire of half-cooked impressions.[2] He isn't picky about food.[2] He isn't actually a hoodie guy but wears it because he can be indecisive.[2] His type is "tall girls with big butts... like Jennifer Lawrence".[54] He first saw her when he watched the Silver Linings Playbook.[1] As credited by Gege Akutami, his theme music is "Heart ni Hi wo Tsukete" by 9mm Parabellum Bullet and "Itsuka Dokoka De" by Kuchiroro.[55]
