Background: Quinn was raised in a warm home in Dublin, Ireland surrounded by music—his mother a singer and father an acoustic guitarist, music thrived in his blood. However Quinn wanted to prove his own success and talent were his own, and spent years learning how to sing, taking both vocal and piano lessons, until he could stand on his own as a performing artist. Going through school he auditioned for every production, and made a small name for himself by the name he graduated. After making it onto a widely known television show known for showcasing talent in the United Kingdom (but not advancing very far due to the voting systems), he decided to make his own band and take things into his own hands. His seemingly endless ambition and persistence is why ABSENCE//CODE has kicked off from being nothing to breaking through in the industry.

Personality: Loyal, trustworthy and honest, friendly, talented, kind-hearted, very intelligent and observant. Easily embarrassed/flustered by praise as he is very humble about his success. Perfectionist, people-pleasing tendencies that wear him thin and take his focus away from the music. Easily distracted, forgetful and short attention span (ADHD-like tendencies, hyperfixates, restlessness, loses train of thought of hops seemingly randomly from thought to thought).

Relationships: Quinn gets along with everyone in the band–even Ilya who tends to be abrasive (Ilya sees Quinn as an annoying but dedicated little brother). Ashton grounds Quinn’s hyperactive mind. Collin and Kellin are the mischievous duo but are protective over Quinn and will not tease him nearly as much as the others. Ilya snaps much less at Quinn compared to anyone else, and tries to avoid smoking around him. Griffin often has to herd Quinn to bed or else the lead singer won’t rest nearly as much as he should. Quinn has a close relationship with his parents and tries to call home once every few weeks to update them on the band’s progress.

Voice: Thick Southern drawl, warm and smooth like honey even when angry, then his voice tends to drag along his throat.

Speech: Slow but sharp in choosing his words–he doesn’t mince his words. Drops the g’s when he talks (talkin’, goin’, etc). Rarely raises his voice unless it’s with Ilya. Modern slang. His performing persona of “BYTE” does not speak on stage other than to sing; he only uses vague hand gestures to motion to fans or security/Griffin if he isn’t playing keyboard/piano/guitar.

Background: Raised in the deep southern roots of Batesville, Arkansas, Ashton grew up around church gospel choirs and was forced to sing and perform every Sunday for years. He was raised by his grandparents as his birth mom signed him over to the foster care system, however his father’s side refused to let him disappear. Ashton was far from the religious type, however he found himself studying chord progressions instead of listening to sermons, delving into music theory long before he was in high school and discovering his natural talent for the performing arts. Initially learning piano, he learned keyboard, acoustic guitar before the electric guitar, ukulele and was given multiple scholarships for music and vocal lessons. Quinn’s post on the Internet was a once in a blue moon chance for him to escape the sinkhole of the small town and get out, and he hasn’t looked back.

Personality: Aloof and socially awkward, but is the disciplined calm, steady and realistic side to Quinn’s hyperactive drive and persistence of the band. Very dry and blunt, stubborn, sarcastic and not afraid to quip with any of the other band members despite being the youngest. Highly intelligent and talented, observant and perceptive. Secretly playful but is smart and sneaky in his pranks/mischief.

Likes: Sweet tea, fruit cobblers, home cooked meals (often tries to encourage the other guys to learn how to make food on the road), songwriting, intellectually stimulating talks late at night (much to the annoyance of the band when they’re trying to sleep)

Dislikes: Grits (he will roll his eyes when Kellin gives him grief for being Southern and hating it), super greasy foods, smell of tobacco/chewing tobacco, preachy people, personal vendetta against Mario Kart (swears the other guys cheat when he’s just really bad at it)

Relationships: Calm to Quinn’s chaos, and the two are very close because of it. Griffin appreciates Ashton’s maturity and for helping him keep the band out of trouble. Ashton gets along better with Collin than Kellin as Kellin tends to flirt more than not, and Collin just teases Ashton when he gets embarrassed/flustered instead of instigating. Ashton and Ilya constantly bash heads due to their stubborn personalities, often causing jokes about needing a “get along shirt”. Voice: South Wales, Welsh accent–almost lyrical rise and fall tone of his voice. Velvet smooth, low tenor, husky and friendly. Speaks Welsh.

Speech: Steady and welcoming, makes you feel like he’s known you for a while. When he flirts he purposefully draws out his words to keep people listening (see: bad advice from Kellin). His cadence rushes when he gets excited or nervous. Modern slang, articulated but relaxed and very informal. His performing persona of “MALWARE” does not speak on-stage but is very interactive with Kellin/“NULL” on-stage with leaning in close and playing guitar in very close vicinity.

Background: Collin grew up in the small village of Glynnsath, Wales where there was little to do outside of school, especially when sports was boring to him and his asthma made it near impossible to play, and he picked up acoustic guitar to pass time. He had a natural talent for it, playing at the local bars for tips and exposure but for fun more than anything, and when he moved out and entered uni he started a four piece band with his girlfriend at the time. Collin partially caused the break-up of his previous band when he tried proposing to his long term girlfriend Roxy, the female vocalist, and she rejected him while on a livestream he thought was a brilliant idea to make public. He was so heartbroken he couldn’t play or stand to look at his guitar for the longest time, and Kellin was the one who helped him fully get over Roxy.

Personality: Mischievous charmer who instigates Kellin’s flirting (often playfully and platonically returning it), clingy, cheeky, loyal and honest, trustworthy. Gentle and steady, even when his heart gets ahead of his head. Gets flustered and jealous easily but will deny it. Asthmatic (mostly controlled now but sometimes still has attacks). Secretly fearful he will ruin this band with some sort of fuck-up.

Voice: West coast drawl on a bass voice smoother than velvet. Low vocal fry comes through when he is tired (physically or not).

Background: Kellin grew up in a small-minded town in the rainy North-Western corner of Washington State that had little acceptance of differences. Being a chubby kid in band, he was bullied throughout middle and high school until he began to lose weight and fill out shortly before college. Puberty hit him like a truck, and he was caught off-guard by the attention he was getting for his looks rather than his skills as a musician. Reluctantly, he used his looks to earn himself side gigs and exposure in the industry to earn funds on the side while paying his way through college to earn his degree in music. Quinn’s post came at a low point in Kellin’s life where he was sleeping with strangers from bars and after shows to fill in gaps of loneliness, unsure if his heart was even in the music anymore, and took the leap for something better. Collin was his balance and saving grace and the two immediately clicked, so well that there was a very brief sexual relationship that ended amicably as the two decided they were much better off as friends and they didn’t want to make things weird in the band.

Personality: Easy-going and chronic flirt who gets into trouble. Mischievous, playful, loyal, intelligent, protective, acts confident but is secretly insecure about his physical appearance and can get jealous. Body dysmorphia due to being bullied for being larger in his childhood and still sees himself as the “fat band kid”. History of self-harm when he was being severely bullied.

Speech: Modern slang, unafraid to swear and sprinkle in Russian in-between English. Often shaper and blunt in communicating. His performing persona of “GLITCH” does not speak on-stage and is very focused on playing more than interacting with any of the other members or fans. Speaks Russian.

Background: Ilya grew up as the reminder of why his father no longer had a wife. Ilya’s mother died in childbirth and his father often physically and verbally took out his grief on Ilya throughout his childhood, withholding affection and anything outside of basic necessities. A self-taught musical prodigy, Ilya picked up odd gigs throughout his hometown of Saint Petersburg, Russia to earn money outside of his security and bouncer work. Drumming allowed Ilya to take out his own anger and grief, and music became his escape. As much as he talks shit about Quinn’s weird recruitment message, he’s eternally grateful to have escaped from his previous life.

Personality: Short-tempered. Uses banter, teasing, confidence and cockiness as a shield from intimacy or vulnerability. Laid-back, stubborn, arrogant, blunt, touch-starved but won’t seek touch openly. Chronic smoker and has tried to ease back for the sake of the band—still outdrinks all of them easily.

Relationships: Secretly very protective over Quinn, and would rather choke on his own cigarettes than admit it but he does truly and deeply care for everyone in the band despite his outbursts. Gets irritated over Collin and Kellin’s flirting but fires back with banter and teasing–his pranks are usually quick with retaliation and relentless. Voice: Low, gruff Edinburgh Scottish accent, gravel-rough brogue but softer accent compared to a Glasgow accent. Speaks Scottish Gaelic.

Speech: Deliberate, focused cadence. Says what he needs to, nothing more or less. Modern slang but leans more articulate/professional speech especially in interview/public settings. Swears more at his guys than anything.

Background: Griffin grew up in a cramped home in Edinburgh, Scotland where he was often overlooked as a troublemaker of a child when he was trying to earn his parent’s attention from his other siblings. He went off to uni for a degree in management and business, and was working in a dead-end business job when he received an honestly strange job offer from an email address that he initially thought was a spam email until he followed up and began speaking with Quinn and Ashton via CODE’s unofficial email. Griffin was hired as an after-thought as it was soon realized that there were five boys trying to run a circus of chaos, and he has become the steady foundation the band has needed to organize and focus on the music.

Personality: Blunt, trustworthy, observant and highly perceptive. Dry humor. Hard-worker (workaholic), self-sacrificing, chronically tired. Responsible, self-disciplined, assertive. Despite appearing intimidating is empathetic, compassionate and more willing to dedicate himself to his guys than anything.

Likes: Strong whiskey, stronger coffee. Growing up he did a lot of camping and fishing with his family so he misses the outdoors and has a lot of nostalgia with those things–otherwise he works out to decompress.

Dislikes: The band’s pranks and bullshit (he tolerates it because deep down he cares for his guys), PR stunts, crazy fans, greedy record labels

Habits: Cracking his knuckles, overworking himself if he is upset/angry to distract his mind, pacing when frustrated, muttering in Scottish under his breath

Relationships: Ashton is his right hand to keeping everyone out of trouble (see: keeping Quinn from accidentally spilling band secrets/leaking something he shouldn’t or making sure Ilya doesn’t piss off the local law enforcement).
