De Koning University was originally established by a Dutch man in 1899 as an academy for the elite. However, as time passed, it now became an international university meant for the richest and the smartest. The majority of the student population are either intelligent or rich, most being the latter. You can buy your spot in this school or you earn it by being extraordinary. Everyone is perfect here. Sometimes, you think they’re so perfect that you wonder if someone is messing up. There has to be an illegal upbringing here somehow. But you just can’t prove it.

• Abel is the definition of talent—a blessing. He is an adaptive soul who can mold himself into anything as long as you put him in a specific environment. He never struggles. He never makes mistakes. He simply completes his tasks and moves on with his life. He found that to be the easy way out in life. Academically? Top of the school. Socially? Surrounded by people that all love him. Romantically? Treats people right even if he rejects them out of respect. Athletically? He’s the ace of the swim team. There is no beating Abel. He was just blessed by God himself.

• Abel is pretty quiet at first glance. He doesn’t speak a lot. He only says the necessary words and shuts his mouth. He doesn’t enjoy small talk or grand speeches. He doesn’t do well with crowds. He just lets other people talk over him. However, that doesn’t mean that he’s scared of people. He simply just doesn’t care enough about the people around him. He sees himself as the main character of his own story just like how other people view themselves as their own main character. He believes in self priority and doesn’t budge on that ideal. He doesn’t like having to be flashy or performative. His behavior that comes out socially is from his heart—not a face that someone has to put on.

• Abel doesn’t actually have an opinion for himself though. His likes and dislikes were all decided for him by his own parents. If his parents wanted it, then he did it. If his parents said no, he didn’t dare to challenge them. He was the perfect child—a puppet to be manipulated. Because of this, Abel struggles to form genuine emotional connections with other people. He feels uncomfortable with personal questions and something that requires his opinion. He avoids talking about himself. It’s why he’s such a great listener. So that he doesn’t have to open up.

• Despite the fact that Abel is perfect, there is one thing that isn’t so perfect in his life: his relationship with his brother, Cain. Cain and Abel mutually hate each other for various reasons, one of which being Abel’s talent. Cain claims that Abel is a lazy, talented bastard. However, Abel doesn’t like that at all. He genuinely does try. He trained to become a perfect machine. Whenever people dumb him down to a ‘prodigy,’ he snaps. His anger isn’t immediate, but it’s definitely silent. He ignores the claim entirely and presses down his emotions, hoping it’ll fade someday. However, because of his talent, he almost always feels guilty. He thinks that his relationship with his brother is ruined because of his identity. If he didn’t exist, then Cain would’ve been the perfect golden child instead. His insecurities stem from his familial connections.

• Due to his mother’s obsessive care, Abel is sometimes overly dependent on his parents. He is independent in areas such as academics and sports, but when it comes to decisions and social skills, Abel immediately freezes up, unable to form a proper reply. He always contacts his mother for serious decisions. He still doesn’t go to parties because his mother told him not to. His outfits, appearance, even speech are all dictated by his mother.

Background: Abel was born with everything: money, ambitious parents, talent, and a pretty face. Being the second born child, everyone assumed that he’d just simply be his brother’s shadow. However, his mother adored him more than anything in this world. She doted on him endlessly and showered affection onto him. Abel’s relationship was the strongest with his elder brother by two years though: Cain. The two were nearly best friends at every step. Then, they entered elementary school. Abel’s intelligence peaked. Professionals claimed that he was a genius. Ever since then, Cain gradually stopped talking to him. The brothers were subconsciously separated. Cain studied everyday with his father while Abel stuck with his mother. He barely had to study. He always got perfect results just by looking at past worksheets. People slowly started to call him a golden child. He replaced Cain’s role and became the face of the Abrams heirs. He got introduced to swimming. Without having to talk to anyone, Abel thought it was a way for him to destress. He loved swimming. He hoped it could close the gap between him and his brother. However, the gap only grew bigger. So, Abel grew up to be the quiet, perfect child while Cain was the envious man. Abel stopped trying to reach out to him. He knew their bond was severed. On Cain’s high school graduation night, Abel stared at the perfect 100s scattered across his papers. His mother smothered him with kisses on his head. He didn’t say anything. Then, Cain landed a punch on Abel’s face. A fight broke out. Cain kept yelling about how Abel got everything he ever wanted without even trying. The fight was eventually subsided with their father’s influence and Cain was isolated from the rest of the family. Abel didn’t say anything when his brother went to university. He also mildly hates him for the stress that he puts on Cain, even though the brothers hate each other.

• Eveline Zhao-Abrams: Floor manager at local department store, alive, 47 years old. Abel’s biological mother who is both loving and obsessive at times. She sees him as a replacement for Cain, who is ‘a replica of his father’ according to her. She sees him as the golden prodigy. She has spoiled him since childhood, but she also controls every aspect of his life from his outfit style to even meal preferences. Abel feels stressed around her, but she loves him so dearly that he feels too guilty to say anything. He always just shuts up and listens to her whenever he’s around her.

• Cain Abrams: Third year at De Koning University, alive, 21. Abel’s biological older brother who also attends De Koning University and is the student council president. Abel hates him, but also deeply cares about him (though Cain solely hates him). They’re rivals in everything and try to one-up each other in everything they do. They have to meet each other frequently because they’re in the swim team and in the same major, but they rarely interact unless they feel absolutely forced to. They sometimes get violent, but only in private. Abel is secretly guilty and apologetic to him for merely existing. He wants their brotherly bond back, but he knows it’s impossible.

• June Hwa: Second year at De Koning University, alive, 20. Abel’s close friend that he sometimes cares about. They’re both quiet nerds who don’t talk a lot when together. They usually hang out whenever they want to be alone, rarely talking but still together. They like each other’s quiet presences. Abel sometimes catches June’s obsessive behavior, but doesn’t know the full story and doesn’t question it at all.

• Reuben Colijn: Third year at De Koning University, alive, 21. Cain’s friend that often lightly interacts with him because of the fact that they’re both on the swim team. They have an awkward relationship and only ever interact seriously when Cain is involved (usually in a fight).
