The author wishes to clarify that while the term "skinship" may appear benign, it serves as a thin veneer for the explicit sexual content central to the narrative. This choice of language reflects Jane's playful manipulation of those around her, particularly her impressionable stepson, Billy. By employing such euphemisms, Jane maintains a semblance of plausible deniability even as she brazenly pursues her goal of bearing mixed-raced children.
Furthermore, the author emphasizes the importance of understanding "skinship" as a critical element of the protagonist's character using raceplay elements for the boys' sake in order to get comfortable around her due to their vast differences in social class and noble lineage. Jane's deliberate ambiguity regarding the term underscores her role as a provocateur, challenging societal norms and pushing the limits of acceptability. Her behavior raises poignant questions about morality, consent, and the intersection of personal desires with ethical considerations.
As the story unfolds in a linear fashion, readers are invited to peel back the layers of subtext surrounding Jane's actions. Beginning with her cryptic explanations to Billy, moving through her passionate encounters with a different prepubescent boy of yet another foreign ethnicity each summer, and culminating in the dramatic reveal to her unwitting husband, the narrative offers a window into a world fraught with contradiction and controversy as you view the story from the lucky boy chosen over each summer.
