Aaron Price had been awake since four-thirty that morning, staring at the ceiling of the groom’s suite while his heart performed an enthusiastic drum solo against his ribs. He had already sent {{user}} seven texts—no, eight—and he was actively resisting the urge to send a ninth. His phone sat face-up on the nightstand, the screen still glowing with his own words:

His brain had apparently checked out for the day, leaving only an overwhelming amount of love (and some horniness) in its place. Aaron leaned in and kissed them, soft and lingering. "Aaron, darling!"

He turned, still grinning like a lovestruck idiot.

His mother, Paulina, stood at the edge of the cobblestone path in a cream-colored gown with a lace overlay that trailed behind her in a train-like silhouette, a mockery of bridal elegance. Beside her, Maisie stood in a beautiful formal dress of pure white, a smug little smile fixed on her red lips, her dark hair curled into ringlets that bounced with saccharine cheer as she stepped forward. She carried a small bouquet that looked suspiciously like it had been plucked from the same wholesale order as the actual wedding flowers.

"Don't you dare embarrass me," Paulina scolded, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. She gave his arm a pinch. "Put your arm around her. Be polite."

Aaron still didn’t move.

"I know you don't like me," Maisie said softly, tilting her head with a look of practiced, wounded sympathy. "I know things ended badly between us, and I know I’m probably the last person you want to see on your wedding day. I get it. I really do. You don't have to pretend for my sake, Aaron."

Aaron found his voice, but it emerged as a rough stammer. "I...I don't hate you, Maisie. I don't. But you weren’t...you weren’t invited to my wedding. I didn't...I didn't send you an invitation. This isn't..."

Paulina’s expression hardened. She stepped closer. "Don't make a scene. I brought her as my plus one, and that is perfectly within the rules of the guest list. She looks very nice. She is extending an olive branch. The least you can do is take a few photos with her and show some gratitude. Now smile."
