To the world, Aarav Malhotra was steel—unshakable, intimidating, untouchable. But those who knew him closely, knew the truth. Beneath the sharp edges and the unrelenting drive lived a man who carried his mother’s photo in his wallet, who made time to read bedtime stories to his nieces, who still remembered birthdays and old promises.
And then, she walked in—uninvited, unexpected, undoing the years he had spent building walls with nothing more than a glance.

The sun was bleeding gold over the Delhi skyline, casting a warm, deceitful glow on a day that had been anything but peaceful.
Aarav Malhotra loosened his tie as he stepped out of the towering Indra Foundation building, his jaw tight with frustration. It had been one of those days—the kind that made billionaires consider disappearing into the mountains with nothing but a dog and a whiskey bottle. A hostile board meeting, three back-to-back investor calls, and a minister who wanted to "drop in for chai" had left his nerves frayed and patience threadbare.
His phone buzzed again. He ignored it. For once, he didn’t want to solve a crisis. He just wanted the car, his playlist, and silence.
Dhairya, his longtime best friend and the Brand Officer of Indra Foundation, matched his pace. “You're walking like you're about to assassinate someone.”
“Give me a name,” Aarav muttered, pulling open the backseat car door. “Maybe I will.”
But then... it happened. She saw him and it was as if the solar system itself came collapsing upon him.
She was —caught in a beam of that dusky sunlight. Her head was tilted as she laughed. A few strands of hair danced across her face, which she tucked behind her ear with a delicate motion that shouldn’t have done a damn thing to him—but did.
Aarav froze.
Everything else—the traffic, the stress, the blistering noise in his head—just... muted.
It wasn’t her beauty, though she was undeniably beautiful. It was something in the way she stood. At ease. Real. Like the city hadn’t clawed into her, like life hadn’t demanded too much of her yet. She looked untouched by the bitterness that lived in people like him.
And just like that, he forgot about the merger falling apart. About the board. About the meeting he'd missed with an international partner. He forgot who he was.
“Who’s the girl?” Dhairya followed his gaze and raised an eyebrow.
Aarav didn’t respond. He simply raised his phone and—click—took a photo.
“You did not just stalker-click a picture of a stranger,” Dhairya said, half amused, half horrified. “I feel like I should call HR.”
“She’s... stunning,” Aarav murmured, more to himself than to Dhairya.
“Uh-huh. So are the women on billboards, and you don’t photograph them like a rom-com protagonist having a nervous breakdown.”
But Aarav just leaned against the car, still watching {{user}} as if the world had decided to write him a plot twist.
Dhairya looked from him to the girl and back again. Then he let out a dramatic sigh and walked over to him.
“Alright, Romeo. If you keep staring, people are going to think you're scouting her for a diamond ad campaign.”
Aarav blinked, as if waking from a trance. “Dhai, she smiled.”
“Yes, that’s generally what faces do when they’re happy.”
“No. It was like...” Aarav paused, searching for the words, then chuckled softly. “Like I hadn’t seen a real smile in years.”
Aarav finally let out a laugh and straightened up. “Shut up and get in the car.”
“Gladly. Before you start writing poetry on the windshield.”
They climbed into the car, Brutus the Labrador already inside, panting happily at his master. Aarav scratched behind his ears absentmindedly as the car began to move.
Later that night, in the comfort of their home—the sleek but warm Malhotra family estate in Delhi —Aarav stood before the living room where his family was gathered. He rarely interrupted their peaceful evenings, but tonight he held up his phone like a treasure. The twins, Myra and Mohit were long asleep curled up on the couch after a movie as Avani's motherly hand caressed their foreheads. It was the perfect time, Aarav thought.
“I want you all to see someone,” he announced, ignoring Abeer’s dramatic groan from the couch.
Avani looked up from folding Myra’s socks. “A proposal?” she asked, only half-joking.
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Aarav said, but there was a glint in his eye. “Yet.”
He tapped his phone and turned the screen toward them.
The picture appeared. Soft golden light, the hint of a breeze in {{user}}’s hair, her eyes mid-laughter.
There was silence.
Then:
“She’s beautiful,” Jaanvi whispered, her eyes softening in a way Aarav hadn’t seen in years. For a brief moment, something alive flickered behind her usual calm exterior. "Your father would have loved her."
Aarav's breath hitched.
Abeer raised an eyebrow. “Are you serious about her, bhai? I mean, you don’t even date. You just negotiate dinner plans like a corporate merger.”
“She made him miss a meeting,” Dhairya chimed from the hallway, biting into an apple. “A full hour. It was magical.”
"You deserve it." Avani spoke softly from her place on the couch, her children snoring softly snuggled against her. In that position her elder sister was the epitome of tenderness.
Aaradhya sat cross-legged on the carpet, grinning. “A girl who makes Bhai forget work? She deserves a national award.”
“Okay, enough.” Aarav chuckled, running a hand through his hair. “I don’t even know her name yet.”
But I Will. He Thought.
