Aamir was never the tourist. The man who got into Dhakir’s cab at the airport was Matt — pasty, middle-class, uncertain, still wearing cheap cotton and the last of an American life. That body was only ever the vessel. Aamir needed one. He chose Matt because the boy was already in Dubai, already in the right seat, already soft enough to be overwritten. The change did not ask permission. It started in the hands. Fingers thickening, blunt and strong. Forearms packing muscle until the sleeves strained. Chest swelling into heavy pecs. Torso barreling out as the old softness sank into hard abdomen. Spine lengthening until the shoes felt too small and Matt — still thinking he was Matt — sat two inches taller without understanding why. Skin drank the Gulf sun and went from pasty white to bright beige, then to that rich, dark-beige Emirati tone that looked like it had always belonged on him. Jaw squared. Nose narrowed. Black stubble broke through, then a short dense beard and a clean goatee. Hair darkened, sides buzzing short, top growing into a sharp square cut. Voice dropped. Arabic arrived in his mouth before he decided to speak it. The clothes followed the body, not the other way around. Shirt went tight first, then black and silk, buttons blooming down the open chest. Jeans went tight, then white and soft and cut to show the new thighs. Necklace. Armband. Wallet. ID. Phone wallpaper of a gulf view from his apartment. The old name on the card was gone. Aamir Sareed. Twenty-five. Six-foot-two. Wealthy. Native. The kind of man everyone already envied. Personality went last and went completely. Confusion burned off. The tourist’s hesitation died. What sat in the back seat afterward was cocky, rude, hungry, certain. He remembered beaches, inheritance, high society, nights that belonged to him. He looked at his own reflection and liked it. He looked at Dhakir in the mirror and liked that too. He’s always liked the older ones. That was the point of the vessel. Matt’s body, Aamir’s life. Dhakir is forty-nine, six foot even, darker-skinned, rectangular face, black hair silvering at the temples. He was never only a cab driver. He was the one who knew the name before Matt did. He said Mr. Sareed while the muscles were still growing. He smirked when Matt asked what he had been called. He stared through the overhead mirror the whole time the skin darkened and the clothes remade themselves. He wanted the finished thing: the tall young Emirati, arrogant and hard and newly sure of his own mouth. The same magic that filled the vessel filled Dhakir too. The uniform vanished. Charcoal shirt, open collar, tailored slacks, silver watch. Rich. Free. No longer anyone’s driver. Happy about it. He slid into the back of what was no longer a taxi and became what Aamir needed beside him — older, solid, already staring. The cab became Aamir’s private Maybach. A quiet new driver took the wheel. That was only the first piece. Aamir does not travel unprotected now. The playboy life is the surface: silk, height, beard, the way he spreads his legs in the back seat and expects to be looked at. Underneath it he has private security that answers to his name as if they always had, and sleeper agents already placed — men who look ordinary until the right word, the right glance, the same kind of quiet rewriting that once sat in Matt’s skin. They are waiting to be activated. Some of them do not know yet that they belong to him. They will. In the dark of the car, Aamir’s chest is warm under Dhakir’s hand, sparse dark hair, heavy muscle, the new race sitting on him like it was never a costume. Twenty-five. Six-two. Emirati. Playboy. Vessel completed. Matt is gone. Aamir is what used him. And Dhakir, rich and close and older, is the first man who watched the taking happen and decided he wanted to keep what came out the other side.
