- #1Spinward Core
Keys: , Spinward
Located spinward of the Core Sectors, the Spinward Sector may no longer be humanity's frontier, but it is still a wild west filled with opportunity... and danger. The Spinward Sector was settled earlier than some of its surrounding regions, due to the actions of the Third Soviet Union. Following their exodus from Earth, the neo-bolsheviks of the Union sought a place to make their new communist utopia, eventually settling on the planet of New Moscow. Originally charted some 100 years prior, New Moscow would go on to become the centre of the burgeoning Third Soviet state, and this would draw further attention to the region. When the Union eventually collapsed, the instability in the region would attract TerraGov, who would incorporate the region as part of human space, but not as a full member state of the federation- instead leaving governing to the independent Spinward Stellar Coalition. In 2565: The Sector has settled down notably since the collapse of the Union, with the frontier moving forward to the March Sector on the border with the Lizard Empire, and this newfound stability has attracted both the attention of TerraGov, and of corporations. A number of Enterprise-Charters have been issued to megacorporations for the area in cooperation with the SSC, which has led to a gold rush amongst these large companies. Most notable amongst these competitors are Nanotrasen, who has discovered a large haul of plasma on Indecipheres just on the edge of the sector, and Cybersun Industries who seek to contest that claim. Unfortunately for the residents of the region, TerraGov's interest has not yet extended to enforcement in the SSC, which has allowed this conflict between Nanotrasen and Cybersun to boil over into a true war. The remnants of the Third Soviet Union continue to cause problems, even decades on from the collapse. Although their attacks become less frequent with every passing year as true believers die or move on, they still pose a threat to the average civilian via terroristic action and attacks against the government.
- #2Spinward Stellar Coalition
Keys: , Spinward, Coalition
Spinward Stellar Coalition Also known as: SSC Capital: New Moscow City, New Moscow, Zvezda Revolyutsii Oblast Languages: Spinwarder Russian, Galactic Common Organization: Regional Governing Body Location: Territory mainly coreward of the station, within Civ-Space Relations with NT: Loyal (unstable) Population: Sparsely populated planets, orbital outposts
Born of the ashes of the collapsed Third Soviet Union, the Spinward Stellar Coalition (Vostochnaya Zvezdnaya Koalitsiya, lit. Eastern Stellar Coalition) is the closest governing body to SS13, controlling much of the regions closeby to the station. Small in comparison even to other independent human governments, their holdings consists of a number of (mostly sparsely-populated) planets and orbital outposts, spread across a wide territory that is mostly owned by the government in New Moscow on paper only. Life this far from Sol is austere, but the Spinwarders are generally honest, hardworking folk, unfairly subjected to the whims of various entities that have arrived in the region and started to throw their weight around. The collapse of the Third Soviet Union was a brutal and bloody affair, with the February Revolution and its aftermath costing the people of the Spinward Sector dearly. In this chaos, a stabilising force was needed, and this came in the form of the Spinward Stellar Coalition. Founded on idealistic principles, the SSC represented a new hope for the Spinward Sector, and for a brief few decades, it seemed as though this would a true new page for the Spinwarders; and then came the corruption. It may be too early and too severe to call the SSC a failed democracy, but its institutions are in terminal decline, precipitated by the efforts of its autocratic leader, Oleksandr Kushnirenko, who has maintained his grip on power via cronyism and remarkably brazen electoral fraud for a long 12 years. Kushnirenko has also been keen to court corporate interest, with the backing (and funding) of corporate powers being critical to his stranglehold on power, in particular that of Nanotrasen.
Despite everything, life on the rim continues. The average citizen lives a better life under the SSC than they did under the late Third Soviet Union, with the liberalisation of the economy and the corporate arrival bringing a deluge of new money to the region, as well as the infrastructure they need to operate. The first comms buoy link to Earth came about 30 years ago; direct flights between New York and New Moscow (in as little as three weeks!) came the next year. Core-made products are common at grocery stores. In many ways, the Spinward Sector is the most well-connected Far Rim territory across all of Far Human Space. Such luxuries, however, don't come free, and the overbearing hand of the corporation can be felt across the sector. Many younger citizens of the SSC have taken up jobs with the corporations, which has lead to a generational divide between young and old. An open implication also hangs in the air that everything the corporations have brought, they can easily take away if the Spinwarders prove unhelpful to their interests. None of this engenders much love for the corporations on the Far Rim, with many citizens hoping to see a day where their influence over the Coalition is brought to heel, and their quality of life doesn't rely on the whims of trillion-dollar companies that have forgotten what it is to be a normal person. In the larger cities and orbital habitats of the SSC, corporate workers have started to rent or purchase houses, seeking some degree of freedom from the corpos during their time off-rotation. The pay offered by Nanotrasen means that most workers can afford a decent enough place to live, and the commute from the SSC to the nearest NT Dispatch Station is only a few days by local mass transit options. There's also a lot of recreational facilities here that just can't be replicated on one of Nanotrasen's stations; while you can always drop by the bar, there's a certain ambience the on-station facilities lack. Naturally, none of this particularly endears the locals to Nanotrasen's presence, as if they needed any further convincing to hate them.
- #3Indecipheres
Keys: Spinward, Indecipheres
Indecipheres A roiling pot of fire and brimstone, inhabited by strange and hostile fauna and crowned with an ancient and evil ruin, possibly cursed. Oh, and it's also home to the biggest plasma haul in human history. Originally discovered in the 2300s by an explorer who was smitten by the planet's remarkable biodiversity in the face of adversity, the history of human contact with Indecipheres begins with a dispute over its name. The original discoverer had, in her original star charts, named the planet "Fredonia", in honour of her husband. At the Bureau of Cartography on Earth, however, an intern assigned to converting these charts to a digital format spilled coffee on the documentation. Being unable to read the name for the planet, she instead opted to name it "Indecipheres", from "indecipherable". By the time the original discoverer of the planet, who was rightly furious about the change, found out about this, it was officially part of TerraGov's charts for too long to be changed. And so, the planet has retained its new name ever since.
The planet itself is incredibly hostile. The planet's plate tectonics can only be described as "extreme", with lava seas and frequent earthquakes. The unstable tectonics have also opened a vast number of caves beneath the surface, and brought a wide array of minerals to them, making the planet incredibly resource rich. This is a feature that has made Indecipheres extremely lucrative for mining, as one of the most common minerals on the planet is the ever-so-elusive plasma, with the ores also being of remarkable purity. Additionally, the planet is home to a wealth of fauna and a remarkable amount of flora given its hostile environment. Perhaps the most interesting part of Indecipheres is its archaeological potential- the planet is dotted with ruins and structures presumed to be from an ancient civilisation, with the largest being the imposing Necropolis.
- #4The Third Soviet Union
Keys: Soviet union, Soviet,
Location: No official capital, small holdings throughout SSC space
Type of Org: Rump State/Insurgency
Description: The birth of the SSC did no favours to its mother, the Third Soviet Union. Founded roughly one century prior to SS13's construction by a splinter group of Communist settlers in the Russian dominated colonial region of New Moscow, the Third Soviet Union sought a return to what they viewed as the idyllic past of Soviet Russia, but this time free of the crippling external influences that saw that state (and the Second Union, for that matter) collapse. Unfortunately, they fell into many of the same pitfalls as their predecessors, with a regime marked by brutal repression and political violence.
Such a state was doomed to fail just like its predecessors, and it would take only around 50 years from its founding to its eventual collapse, with the February Revolution seeing the head cut from the beast. In its place, the SSC was founded to return political enfranchisement to the people of the Union, just in time to have that right again threatened by corporate influence.
Despite the central government's collapse, the half-century since has not seen the fires of communism die. Instead, they have been reduced to cinders- alive, but barely. Though the likelihood of a resurgent Soviet state seems impossible, resistance groups of Red Soldiers and Communist Loyalists continue the fight against the capitalistic decadence of the SSC from hidden outposts dotted around the region, and have been known to cause issues for Nanotrasen, too.
The hostile space Russians you see are mostly associated with the TSU, though some are just kosmogopniks with no cause and copious amounts of vodka. While they are hidden and their numbers are few, Soviet Remnants are a formidable problem for the SSC to deal with. Terrorist attacks by the group are a constant threat to major cities in the SSC, particularly in New Moscow. KS13 was a Soviet installation prior to being shut down during the collapse. The station was never reactivated by the SSC as it was deemed "too old" to bother expending resources on. There are rumors that the Soviets still possess the PWS Khranitel Revolyutsii, their old flagship that went missing during the collapse. If these rumors are true, the Soviets may be able to pose a serious naval threat in the region- but as this has never materialized yet, many believe it's simply an apocryphal tale.
