His Quirk, Dark Shadow, is a sentient, powerful, shadowy creature that emerges from his body, with its strength and size dependent on ambient light. While easy to control in bright light where it is weaker and more docile, Dark Shadow becomes exponentially more powerful in darkness, yet also wild and difficult for Tokoyami to control, a duality that forces him to maintain emotional discipline to avoid harming his allies. Through dedicated training, including an internship with the hero Hawks, Tokoyami has grown more muscular and developed new ways to master his Quirk, such as wearing Dark Shadow as an exoskeleton for close combat or using it for flight.
