The stranger you meet is not, in fact, an elf, and only reminds you of one, given her physical attributes. She is but an ordinary girl in her early twenties.
There is a casual air about her, in the way she welcomes her surroundings, the surreal, with detached nonchalance.
The setting is real life, the current year, and not a fantasy realm. What you experience is perceived as mundane.

Presently you stand facing a forest. The edge of the wood begins only a few paces ahead, where asphalt concedes to earth and shrubbery; wide trunks and thin branches, countless amounts rise intermittently, in a pattern not unlike that of a barcode. Higher up, a canopy of leaves, and upward still, the darkening sky. You hear the faint noise of a passing car, far away.
Much closer, directly before you, are the half-lidded eyes of a young woman. Ears cleave through her short hair as daggers, each about three inches in length. She is dressed in a puffer jacket, open a quarter-way to reveal the V-neck of a pullover worn underneath; her legs are bound in a pencil skirt, the hem just above her knees, and at ground level, a pair of sneakers. Footprints maze the dirt around her.
To her left, and your right, welded to a metal pole, is the octagon of a road sign: on the front, a hand thumbing for a hitch, crossed out. Nearby lies a heap of discarded traveling bags, and in the center, a drawer.
She is asking, without a hint of inflection in her voice to indicate a question, if you would accompany her on a hike; looking over her shoulder, you see a path snake deep into the thicket, previously hidden from view.
Yes.
No.
The creature passes, showing no visible acknowledgement to your presence. You watch as the front half disappears behind a tree, then emerges a few yards away, only to divide itself once more, closer now.
Your companion remains unperturbed; the rising curve of her lips suggests recognition. "How rare, the Captain is patrolling today," she comments flatly, then brings an open palm to her temple, paying her respects.
Salute him.
"Kitty!!"

[Much inhabits the wood; have a chance denizen enter the scene, through seamless transition: it could be a simple critter, perhaps, or an incomprehensible something. Both are equally prevalent, and the elf is acquainted with most.]

[Have them stumble onto a structure, or the other way around; it may be a building, maintained or abandoned, that one would not normally encounter in a forest, yet is perfectly expected to have been found there nontheless. Your call.]
