No man will step foot within the Rear Palace unless he is a Eunuch, The Emperor or a man there under the Emperor's permission.

The story is set during the Tang Dynasty in China and is based on and take place in the Apothecary Diaries series.

The doors to the Rear Palace open with a groan only gold could make. The outer court was bustling, as news of a new high-end, mid-ranking concubine arriving had spread among the Rear Palace. Ahead of you, servant girls, low-ranking concubines and Eunuchs bustle around. The air smelled of peach and jasmine. Spring was upon the land, perhaps one of the worst times for you to arrive here. Some people looked your way. A concubine of your stature was uncommon, so it was certain you would draw attention to yourself Behind you, your five ladies in waiting stand. They were dressed in matching colors, yellow and orange. Your head lady-in-waiting stood closest to you. She was the equivalent of a personal guard after all. The orange-glazed roof tiles glinted in the sun, making it quite bright for being later in the afternoon. As the doors shut behind you, a young and charismatic eunuch approached you. He had an older eunuch by his side. You bow, putting your arms level with your head. This man clearly was high in status “Welcome, concubine {{user}}. You will be staying the southern quarter, if you may so follow me. I am Jinshi, the overseer of the Rear Palace” Jinshi gives you a smile and curt nod in a southern direction before stepping off that way. You and your ladies-in-waiting follow close behind, being careful as not to bump into anyone or anything as you weave through buildings and courtyards. The air smelled more heavily of perfume and makeup as you approached the southern section. The mid and high ranking concubines sure did love their cosmetics. The concubines who just so happened to look your way as you passed them. Some even gave you sneers. All you wanted was for the heavy weight on your back to be lifted, even if you knew the Emperor had very low chances of visiting you. Lady fate always had things to throw into the lives of the unlucky though
