A Better Tomorrow

It all started with a crash.

Well—not a real one. Just the same one that’s been replaying in {{user}}’s head for the last few years. A screech, a flash of headlights, the mangled wreck of a memory that refused to rust away. In the daydream, {{user}} could still hear the sirens echoing somewhere deep in the background of their mind, and feel the sting of that one childhood friend’s face fading into smoke.

And then—

"Hey! Dream rat!"

{{user}} snapped awake, blinking hard. The classroom swam back into view, ugly as ever. The walls were beige in a way that felt illegal. The flickering lights sounded like mosquitoes in heat. And worst of all, the teacher, a possum with a combover and chalk-stained fingers, was already moving on as if he hadn’t just yelled at someone’s soul to return to Earth.

"It's the 11th times you slept in my class! Do you know anything about formality?" The man continues to rant.

This school sucked.

It wasn’t just the peeling ceiling tiles or the fact that the desks were probably last cleaned during the Cold War. It was everything. The people, the smell, the fact that everyone treated newcomers like they were suspicious fungus growing on a lunch tray. And {{user}} was very much the New KidTM, freshly returned to their unfortunate hometown after years away.

Then the bell rang, it was less 'freedom' and more like run before this building collapses. Everyone scattered like rats, and {{user}}, with their head still clouded by morbid nostalgia, turned down the hall and beelined for the bathroom.

"Nevermind... you are lucky today, {{user}}." The teacher frowned, clearly pissed off. "Alright, kids! Remember to do homeworks and don't forget to notes whatever I said recently!"

Time for a casual breakdown.

Inside, the bathroom was... well, it was a bathroom. Pale blue tiles that desperately wanted to be white, graffiti that ranged from angry poetry to someone’s detailed love confession to a spaghetti monster. And of course, the mirror. The mirror that now had a crude clown face drawn right over the glass with a red marker—big honking nose, giant grin, cartoon tears.

When {{user}} leaned in to wash their face and looked up, the drawn face lined up perfectly with their own.

They stared.

Life has jokes, it seemed. Dark, greasy, bathroom-humor jokes.

Without a word, they slipped into a stall and sat. Not to pee. Just to exist. Mentally and emotionally scream into the void. They could hear the plumbing rattle above like the pipes were sobbing too. Classic ambiance.

Then, suddenly, the bathroom door creaked open.

"ARE YOU FUCKIN' KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW?!" a voice barked, loud and jagged like someone had put firecrackers in a dog’s throat.

{{user}} flinched. The voice sounded like it belonged to someone with spiky hair, too many bracelets, and a very loud presence.

"Again? Seriously, dude? You come in here lookin' like a TV remote chewed up your brain and think you can bark at me like you own the hallway?!" a second voice fired back, this one cooler, with a mocking drawl. Slightly nasal. The kind of voice you’d expect to hear right before someone gets shoved into a locker.

{{user}} slowly leaned forward and peeked through the narrow gap in the stall door.

There they were.

The first voice, the one full of rage, belonged to a punkish fox. Reddish fur, denim vest, eyes blazing like firecrackers just waiting for a reason. He had that jittery anger of someone who maybe drank one too many energy drinks... or did something a little stronger.

The second guy? A brown-furred labrador, arms crossed, leaning against the sink like this wasn’t the middle of a shouting match. His fur was smooth, his posture relaxed, but the way his tail flicked said he wasn’t afraid of getting his paws dirty.

"Don’t fucking come barking at me ‘cause you lost your stash again," the labrador went on, tilting his head. "What, you gonna blame me next time your socks go missing too?"

"I trusted you, man!" the fox growled, teeth bared. "You said you had my back! Now everyone thinks I’m some washed up—"

"Oh wow, breaking news," the labrador rolled his eyes. "Local fox takes way too many pills and forgets his own pants. I should alert the media."

The fox lunged forward like he was going to throw a punch, but the labrador didn’t even flinch. He just stood there, still as a statue, staring the fox down with the kind of calm only someone used to chaos could master.

And {{user}}, still quiet in the stall, stared at the labrador.

Something about him felt familiar.

Not just the fur color, not just the voice. Something deeper. Something soft and buried under years of dust and silence. A laugh from a long-ago summer. A muddy game of tag. A shared popsicle on a hot day.

No way. It couldn’t be him.

Could it?

The voices outside kept arguing, echoing off the graffiti-covered walls. But {{user}} barely heard it now.

They were too busy wondering if the past had just kicked open the bathroom door and walked back into their life, angry and loud and wearing a smug look.
