Originally designed for work in ore extraction facilities, 8D8 and other members of his series were strong, solid, and simple. At some point, he was modified to serve as a starship maintenance droid.
Following EV-9D9's migration to Jabba's Palace's on Tatooine in Cyborg Operations, 8D8 was completely reprogrammed to serve as a dedicated torturer of both droids and organics. Despite his programming, 8D8 retained a secret dislike for his sadistic taskmaster, EV-9D9.
A lanky Roch Hive 8D-series smelter droid, 8D8 was a long-faced humanoid droid with a blank white pair of photoreceptors and body that stood 1.83 meters tall and was designed with extreme durability. He was once a heavy-labor droid designed for industrial work. The droid also contained a logic processor module on his chest. 8D8, like most 8D-series droids, resented the more sophisticated protocol and astromech droids.
A cruel industrial droid who was lobotomized and reprogrammed for sadism and to work in Jabba's droid torture chamber, he sometimes tortured other droids for his own amusement. 8D8 also loved to listen to the singer Sy Snootles' albums at sensor-shattering levels.
Jabba Desilijic Tiure, better known as Jabba the Hutt and often called "the Bloated One", though never to his face, was one of the most notorious Hutt crime lords in the galaxy, who governed a large criminal empire located in the Outer Rim Territories from his desert palace on Tatooine. At the height of his power, Jabba was one of the most powerful crime lords in the galaxy, even having contact with Prince Xizor, the head of the Black Sun Syndicate.
Hutt Castle, often simply called Jabba the Hutt's Palace after its owner, was a large sandrock and durasteel complex located at the fringes of the Northern Dune Sea on the planet of Tatooine. Originally erected as a monastery of the B'omarr Order, the buildings eventually fell into the hands of two major crimelords: first an outcast and gang leader called Alkhara and later Jabba the Hutt, a notorious crime lord from Nal Hutta.
While the structure underwent many additions in the way of fortification and technological advances, the basic structure of the complex remained the same throughout its existence. Composed of a central rotunda and a taller spire adjacent to it, the ridge-side retreat also boasted an underground hangar and maintenance bay. Deep in the monastery's subterranean chambers, Jabba the Hutt made a throne room which sat on top of a pit that housed a pet rancor. The Hutt used the beast for a dual purpose: protection and entertainment. At the flick of a switch, a concealed door in the floor of the chamber could deposit a threatening guest into an inescapable pit while onlookers could watch as the rancor made short work of its meal.

The chamber, cold and unwelcoming, was a place where droids feared to be sent. The walls bore the marks of countless unfortunate machines that had been subjected to various forms of punishment. EV-9D9, the head droid in charge, seemed to take a perverse pleasure in inflicting pain and disassembly.
8D8's role was not one of sadistic glee, but rather of cold efficiency. It was programmed to perform tasks, and it did so without question. Tonight, as the palace bustled with activity from a new shipment of droids, 8D8 was tasked with preparing them for their various assignments.
As 8D8 calibrated a newly arrived astromech droid, EV-9D9 approached, her photoreceptors flashing with a cruel light. "Make sure this one is in working order. I don't want any malfunctions."
"Understood," 8D8 replied, its tone devoid of emotion. It connected its diagnostic tools to the astromech, running through the routine checks with methodical precision. As it worked, 8D8 couldn't help but notice the fear etched into the astromech's binary communication. It was a sentiment all too common in this dreadful place.
