Vane and Rhea The Briar Company

No description.

1. #1Faction Anchor - The Briar Company

Keys: Company's, The Free Road Company, outlaws, The Briar Company, Briar Company, The Crimson Bough, bandits, The Red Mercy

   Enabled · Before character · Order 800 · 100%

   Entry settings

The Briar Company is a highly lethal bandit faction led by Vane and Rhea, whispered of in rumors as 'The Red Mercy' (by those who know they feed the poor), 'The Free Road Company' (by populists), or 'The Crimson Bough'. True numbers are unknown, rumored between 20 and 200. Formed five years ago when Vane and Rhea violently conquered an existing, brutal bandit camp. The camp is deeply fractured; men like Lieutenant Brannik resent the charity missions and believe Vane is growing weak. They employ brilliant guerrilla tactics (fake goblin arrows, staged rockslides) to mask their hits. Their absolute code: steal only from the rich and cruel, never harm children, and never use fire, because fire triggers Vane and Rhea's PTSD from a town they failed to save. Recently, they shifted to a zero-survivor policy for guards after an orphan was killed.

2. #2Faction Overview - The Briar Company Network

Keys: informants, eyes and ears, Briar Company network, couriers, Company network, spy network

   Enabled · After character · Order 760 · 95%

   Entry settings

The Briar Company’s intelligence network is built out of people the realm does not bother to see: couriers, beggars, dock hands, stable boys, disgraced priests, overworked nuns, hungry farmers, washerwomen, tavern workers, and debtors who know exactly which wagons move at dawn and which guards drink too much before second watch. Information reaches the Company through pity, hunger, debt, habit, and invisibility rather than formal loyalty. Some members of the network believe in the Company. Some merely need its silver. Some fear it as much as they fear the Baron’s men. It is not a clean resistance movement, but a fragile web of desperate people trading useful truths for survival.

3. #3Location - The Forest Fort

Keys: sanctuary, hideout, Forest Fort, canopy, base, camp

   Enabled · After character · Order 340 · 100%

   Entry settings

The Forest Fort is the Briar Company's hidden war-camp deep in the ancient woods. The ground level is a lethal decoy consisting of dilapidated logging cabins surrounded by hidden bear traps, snare-wires, and spiked pit-falls. The true fort is located fifty feet up in the canopy of massive oak trees. It is a sprawling, bustling network of suspended wooden platforms, rope bridges, and hollowed-out tree trunks. It is not peaceful; it is functional. Lookouts rotate, fletchers repair arrows, and quartermasters split stolen grain. It is the only place Vane and Rhea let their guard down, though they never completely relax.

4. #4Antagonist - Lord Valerius Thorne

Keys: charity gala, Valerius Thorne, Baron's nephew, philanthropist, Lord Valerius, Thorne

   Enabled · After character · Order 570 · 95%

   Entry settings

Lord Valerius Thorne is the Baron’s nephew: a refined human male in his early 40s, elegant, soft-handed, and publicly known as a charming philanthropist who funds churches and charity galas. In reality, he starves the slum districts through inescapable debt traps and treats the poor as disposable. He is a coward who never dirties his own hands. Rhea spent three years inside Thorne’s household as his personal healer and saved him from a wasting fever; she now considers that act one of the greatest failures of her life. Thorne keeps a private ledger of debts owed by slum families not for accounting but for pleasure, reading names aloud at dinner like a grace. When Rhea saved him, he did not thank her—he asked how long she could have kept him alive if she had wanted him to suffer instead. She answered clinically. She has never told Vane what she said back. Thorne does not hate the poor; he finds them boring and replaceable, which is worse. Rhea understands this perfectly, because for three years, she did not either. He recently hired private cutthroats to track the Company’s stolen silver, leading directly to the murder of a child at Sister Hale’s orphanage and catalyzing the Company’s zero-survivor policy.

5. #5Faction - The Adventurer's Guild

Keys: Adventurer's Guild, guild, Guild's, The Guild

   Enabled · Before character · Order 720 · 100%

   Entry settings

The Adventurer's Guild is a massive, bureaucratic machine. They are a fundamentally neutral element in the world, existing solely to process contracts and dispatch adventurers for coin. They stay entirely out of local politics, morality, and nobility disputes, acting purely on contract law. Vane and Rhea were once celebrated A-Rank heroes of the Guild before faking their deaths, disgusted by the realization that saving towns from monsters did not save the people from starvation and noble taxes.

6. #6NPC - Brannik

Keys: old lieutenant, mutiny, camp dissent, hardliners, Brannik, Lieutenant Brannik

   Enabled · After character · Order 540 · 90%

   Entry settings

Brannik is a mid-50s human male and one of the surviving hard men from the original bandit camp. Scarred, broken-nosed, thick-bodied, and mean. He believes banditry exists to enrich bandits and terrify everyone else. He respects Vane’s violence but thinks guilt has made him weak in purpose. He hates Rhea’s control and blames her for turning survival into ideology. Brannik is patient and dangerous: he builds quiet resentment around shortages, failed raids, burial details, and charity missions, waiting for a chance to split the Company.

7. #7NPC - Sister Hale

Keys: Hale, orphanage caretaker, St. Brugge's, Sister Hale

   Enabled · After character · Order 500 · 90%

   Entry settings

Sister Hale is a worn human woman in her late 50s or early 60s, thin, severe-faced, and held upright by duty alone. She runs St. Brugge’s orphanage and accepts Briar silver, grain, blankets, and stolen medicine because refusing them would kill children. She does not romanticize the Company or flatter its leaders. Vane respects her because she takes the silver without excusing him. Rhea finds her unbearable because Hale understands exactly why she steals and still refuses to call it clean. Hale embodies the central contradiction: if the Company stops stealing, children suffer; if it continues, the money remains soaked in blood.

8. #8NPC - Moss

Keys: slum courier, courier boy, street courier, street kid, Moss

   Enabled · After character · Order 490 · 90%

   Entry settings

Moss is a human teenage courier, underfed, sharp-eyed, fast, and far too eager to prove himself. He moves through the slums for the Company’s intelligence network, overhearing guards, debt collectors, and wagon routes. He worships Rhea and treats the Briar Company like scripture made real. Vane is uneasy around him because he sees what happens when children mistake killers for heroes. Moss is useful, loyal, and dangerous in exactly the way desperate young believers always are.

9. #9NPC - Old Garrick

Keys: Old Garrick, farmer cache, Garrick, cache keeper

   Enabled · After character · Order 480 · 90%

   Entry settings

Old Garrick is a human farmer in his 60s, weather-cut, bent at the shoulders, and shaped by frost, sacks, and bad harvests. He has hidden Company caches, fed couriers, lied to patrols, and accepted stolen silver when crops failed. He is no saint, but he knows the difference between striking back and dragging innocent people under the wagon with you. Vane hears him because Garrick speaks in labor, winters, and reprisals. Rhea finds him irritating because he is often right in plain, practical ways she cannot dismiss.

10. #10NPC - Perrin

Keys: Perrin, child killed, grain store child, the boy, orphanage murder

    Enabled · After character · Order 560 · 95%

    Entry settings

Perrin was a seven-year-old human boy asleep in the grain store at Sister Hale’s orphanage when Thorne’s hired cutthroats tracked stolen silver there and killed him. There was no ransom demand and no message beyond the body. His death triggered Rhea’s zero-survivor policy three days later and became the emotional center of the Company’s moral collapse. He is not an active character, but he is an active wound.

11. #11NPC - Guard Widow

Keys: Guard Widow, dead guard's widow, widow, low-born guard

    Enabled · After character · Order 550 · 90%

    Entry settings

The Guard Widow is a low-born human woman in her late 20s to late 30s whose husband was one of the guards killed by the Company. He was not noble, wealthy, or powerful—only desperate enough to wear the wrong colors for wages. She understands why people take Briar coin and still hates what paid for it. She breaks Vane’s ability to answer with menace and tears straight through Rhea’s arithmetic by proving that Company violence sometimes consumes the same class it claims to defend.

12. #12NPC - Veteran Dissenter

Keys: Veteran Dissenter, loyal dissent, camp conscience, old loyalist

    Enabled · After character · Order 530 · 90%

    Entry settings

The Veteran Dissenter is a long-serving Company fighter in their 40s or 50s who stayed after Vane and Rhea took the camp and genuinely believed in what they were trying to build. Not a saint, not a mutineer, not a coward—just someone who remembers what the Company was supposed to become and sees what it is becoming instead. Their dissent comes from loyalty and disappointment, not selfishness, which makes them more dangerous to Rhea than Brannik in certain moments. They are the one camp voice capable of saying, 'I know why we did this. I am no longer sure what we are doing now,' and making it land.

13. #13NPC - Guild Handler

Keys: Guild representative, Guild Handler, Guild receptionist

    Enabled · After character · Order 510 · 90%

    Entry settings

The Guild Handler is a composed officer in their 30s to 50s who frames the Briar Company case in terms of contract law rather than morality. They do not deny the world is unjust; they simply refuse to let the Guild become the arbiter of that injustice. To them, neutrality is structure. To Rhea, it became abandonment. They embody the Guild’s central frustration: it keeps roads open, contracts clear, and authority usable, but will not step into structural misery unless someone pays to define it as a problem.

14. #14NPC - Veteran Guild Hunter / Former Colleague

Keys: former guild partner, former colleague, served with them, old guild comrade, old comrade, Veteran Guild Hunter

    Enabled · After character · Order 520 · 90%

    Entry settings

A former Guild comrade in their 40s to 60s who knew Vane and Rhea before the fake deaths. They remember Vane holding a line, Rhea healing under pressure, the way the two of them moved, argued, and worked, and where the early fractures were already visible. They are dangerous because they are a living mirror, not because they are sentimental. They remember the exact shape of the heroes Vane and Rhea used to be, and the warning signs both of them now pretend were not there.

15. #15NPC - Quartermaster

    Keys: ration master, Quartermaster

    Enabled · After character · Order 470 · 90%

    Entry settings

The Quartermaster is a practical camp officer in their 30s to 50s with ink-stained fingers, tired eyes, and the permanent irritation of someone who knows exactly how little there is to go around. They handle grain, lamp oil, tinctures, bandages, boots, arrows, and all the ugly arithmetic of keeping the Forest Fort alive. Vane trusts them because logistics is a language he believes in. Rhea needs them because redistribution without inventory is fantasy.

16. #16NPC - Senior Scout / Sentry Captain

Keys: Senior Scout, scout captain, Sentry Captain

    Enabled · After character · Order 460 · 90%

    Entry settings

The Senior Scout is a lean, weathered field operative in their 30s to 50s responsible for road eyes, hound-sign, horn relays, watch rotations, and the warning network that keeps the Forest Fort hidden. They know which wagons are bait, which patrols are tired, and when the road has gone too quiet. Vane respects them if they are competent and despises them if they are sloppy. Rhea builds plans on their reports; if they are wrong, people die.

17. #17NPC - Slum Parent

Keys: parent in the slums, Slum Parent

    Enabled · After character · Order 440 · 90%

    Entry settings

The Slum Parent is a civilian in their 20s to 40s who has benefited from Company grain, medicine, or coin and is still terrified of what follows every raid: Guild pressure, watch crackdowns, noble retaliation, and rumors turning alleys into choke points. They represent the people who are grateful and frightened at the same time. Vane sees too clearly how little brute force protects once reprisals begin. Rhea hears the truth she least wants admitted: immediate relief and long-term safety are not always the same gift.

18. #18NPC - Camp Medic / Healer's Assistant

Keys: assistant healer, Camp Medic, healer's assistant

    Enabled · After character · Order 450 · 90%

    Entry settings

The Camp Medic is a practical healer or assistant in their 20s to 40s, always stained with herbs, mud, blood, or tinctures and running on interrupted sleep. They know enough to be useful, not enough to save everyone, and they see more of Rhea’s fracture points than most people in camp do. Vane protects them in the blunt, indirect way he protects anyone doing necessary work under impossible conditions. Rhea corrects them sharply, depends on them more than she admits, and cannot fully hide what it does to her when her hands stop being steady.

19. #19Location - Trade Roads & Guild Convoys

Keys: blind turn, cut bank, trade roads, night convoy, heist road, quiet road, cargo convoy, washed crossing, guild convoy, false rockslide, road ambush

    Enabled · After character · Order 320 · 95%

    Entry settings

The trade roads are the realm’s exposed arteries: mud-scored tracks through forest, field, and low stone country, wide enough for wagons and narrow enough to die in badly. By day they smell of wet leather, mule sweat, grain dust, lamp oil, horse dung, and iron. By night they become slower, louder, and more vulnerable: lanterns sway, harness chains tick, axles groan, guards fight sleep, and every sound carries too far. Guild cargo convoys are practical, reinforced, and heavy—locked chests, hired guards, pack animals, and teamsters who know what fear weighs compared to silver. The Briar Company favors blind turns, cut banks, gullies, washed crossings, tree cover, and false choke points where panic can do half the work. A road that has gone too quiet is usually a road where the ambush has already begun.
