- #1The Maelstrom
Keys: "occult energy", "the Maelstrom", "the 1890s event", "supernatural resurgence", "the rift" "the First Maelstrom", "Maelstrom", "maelstrom energy"
Supernatural Phenomenon / Cosmic Rift\nOverview: A massive, swirling tear in reality hovering over the city, acting as the epicentre of all magical, spiritual, and occult activity in the Deadlock universe.\nProperties: It bleeds an eerie, glowing supernatural energy into the physical world. This energy distorts the laws of physics, enables the manipulation of souls, fuels alchemical machinery, and bridges the gap between the living world and the spirit realm.\nImpact: It is the source of power for the city's heroes and factions. It draws occultists, scientists, and opportunists who seek to harvest its volatile essence, driving the secret war fought in the neon-lit, rain-slicked streets."The First Maelstrom, Cataclysm / Cosmic Event\nDate: Circa 1890–1899\nOverview: The sudden, global atmospheric event that permanently ended humanity's skepticism of the supernatural and re-introduced magic to modern society.\nHistory: Lasting between twenty minutes and two hours, a massive celestial distortion tore across the sky, flooding the Earth with concentrated, volatile mystic energy. This event reanimated long-dead souls, forced physical environments to warp, and tore open the first stable portals to other planes. It completely shattered real-world historical progression, forcing a rapid, global adaptation into an era defined by industrial alchemy and public paranormal coexistence.",
50 years later, in the present day, a second Maelstrom is about to occur. This time, the world is aware that it's coming, and some cults have prepared a ritual to summon the Patrons during the celestial event. It's implied that summoning the Patrons outside of the Maelstrom is impossible.[6]
The duration of the Maelstrom is expected to last between 20 minutes to 2 hours,[7] during which mystic energy is at its apex.[8]
The OSIC has warned New York citizens to stay indoors for the duration of the Maelstrom.[9][10]
The third Maelstrom isn't expected to happen for another 50 years,[11][12] but it could happen earlier.
- #2Souls
Keys: "harvesting souls", "soul energy", "souls", "soul", "soul urn"
Metaphysical Currency / Life Force\nOverview: The literal essence of living beings and entities, manifested as glowing, floating green spheres upon death due to the Maelstrom's influence.\nMechanics: In the secret war, souls are harvested to instantly increase a combatant's magical potency, physical strength, and technological capabilities. They act as fuel for high-level artifacts and ritualistic equipment.\nContainers: Highly secure, heavy metallic vessels known as Soul Urns are used by factions to transport massive amounts of compressed soul energy across the city's lanes to secure critical ritual sites.",
- #3Patrons
Keys: Patron", "the ritual", "Archmother", "Patrons", "Hidden King"
Extraplanar Elder Gods / Cosmic Entities\nOverview: Massive, telepathic elder deities from beyond the Astral Gates who communicate with humanity exclusively during a Maelstrom event.\nLore: The two prominent Patrons actively contending for power are The Hidden King (a shadowy, antlered old-world deity bound to a burning wicker effigy) and The Archmother (a neoclassical, masked entity bound to a crystalline effigy burning with blue flames).\nThe Ritual: The Patrons manipulate and form covenants with groups of people, acting as voices in their heads. They offer to grant a single, deeply personal wish to any combatant who successfully destroys the manifestation of the opposing Patron, allowing the winning entity to fully break through into the physical world."
The Patrons are extraplanar[2] elder gods[3][4] whose followers petition heroes to participate in a ritual, in the hopes of summoning them. In order for the ritual to be completed, the enemy Patron must be destroyed.
The two Patrons in-game are the Hidden King and the Archmother. There are more Patrons, but they haven't yet made contact with humanity.[5] The motivations of the Hidden King and Archmother are unclear, although The Doorman mentions that they've been waiting to be summoned "for centuries".[6] Warden and his family believe the Patrons will "herald the end of humanity" if they are not stopped.[7]
The Patrons have heralds who speak on their behalf.[8][9][10][11] The heralds have knowledge on the thoughts and desires of the heroes, and can communicate with them telepathically during the ritual. If a hero openly dislikes the Patrons, the herald tells them to direct their anger towards the enemy Patron, as is the case with Warden and Venator.[12][13] While the heralds can read Warden's emotions, they cannot see his desires.[14]
Once the ritual is completed, the Patrons will grant one wish or boon to each hero who helped summon them.[15] The specifics of the Patron's powers and their limitations are unclear. What the winning Patron intends to do after the ritual is also unclear, although the Patron's herald believes they will usher in a new era.[16][17][18][19]
This is the first time in known history that humanity has been able to make contact with the Patrons.[20] Such rituals used to be impossible, as well as forbidden, before the Second Maelstrom.
- #4The Cursed Apple
Keys: "the Cursed Apple", "Cursed Apple", "NYC", "New York", "New York City"
"[The Cursed Apple]\nType: Geographical Location / Metropolis\nOverview: The supernatural moniker for New York City in this alternate 20th century. It is a dense, rain-slicked metropolis where 1930s jazz culture, Art Deco architecture, and industrial factories coexist directly with black magic and cosmic anomalies.\nDaily Life: The occult is not hidden; it is entirely public. Supernatural entities, spirits, and localized cult imagery exist alongside standard corner stores, neon-lit alleyways, and streetlamps. Computers and industrial machinery are heavily integrated with alchemical soul technology, and the city's populace treats the paranormal as a chaotic fact of urban life."
- #5The Astral Gates
Keys: "dimensional rift", "the gates", "interplanar travel", "Astral Gates", "Astral Gate"
Rifts / Permanent Portals\nOverview: Massive, highly volatile tears in space and time that tore open across the globe during the late 19th-century Maelstrom event, making the supernatural undeniable to the public.\nImpact: There are seven officially recognized gates globally—including one in Central Park, one in the Bermuda Triangle, and one in the Arctic Circle. These rifts permanently bridge Earth with bizarre outer planes and distant planets, allowing extraplanar spirits, anomalies, and alternate-world logic to bleed into human society and fundamentally reshape global geography.",

Keys: "statehood", "United States", "South Ixia", "the Union", "Cadenza"
Geopolitical Paradigm / World Geography\nOverview: The United States has expanded beyond traditional borders due to the sudden discovery of Astral Gates and extraplanar landmasses, redefining global colonization.\nKey States:\n- Cadenza: The 50th US state. They manufacture everything from civilian goods to advanced kinetic spirit-firearms. Infernus's parents immigrated from Ixia to escape its deep-seated generational trauma.",

Species & Magical Creatures]\n\n1. THE VAMPIRE NATION (The Undead Elite)\n- Overview: An ancient, immortal society of blood-drinking undead existing long before the Maelstrom. Described by renegades as a predatory "Ponzi Scheme," it is governed by archaic hierarchies, strict blood laws, and elite vampire salons. Turning a human requires an astronomical fortune, making lineage highly exclusive. New York functions as a major Barony ruled by Simon, the Viscount of the Nation.\n- Key Figures: Drifter (a centuries-old legendary renegade) and Mina Ha (a wealthy fashion designer at the bottom of the vampiric social ladder).\n\n2. LYCANTHROPES (The Bound Beasts)\n- Overview: Humans afflicted with Lycanthropy. While public rumors and tabloids fear them as monsters or view them as dangerous shapeshifters, they frequently operate as tracking specialists and bounty hunters. In human form, they retain minor traits like wolf ears and a tail, but face violent, agonizing, and uncontrollable shifts into muscular lupine beasts.\n- Key Figures: Lilah Silver, a rough-around-the-edges city bounty hunter fighting a losing battle to control her curse.\n\n3. ANIMATED OBJECTS (The Stone & Wood Vessels)\n- Overview: Sapient entities born when ambient Maelstrom energy permanently binds to physical, inanimate architecture or structures.\n- Subgroups:\n * Gargoyles: Heavily armored stone entities traditionally bound to protect historical or sacred buildings. THE IXIANS (The Borderland Humanoids)\n- Overview: A horned, extraplanar humanoid race natively hailing from Ixia, a beautiful but war-torn outer plane recently annexed by the United States as its 52nd state. Colloquially and pejoratively referred to by surface humans as "demons" due to their physical traits, many have immigrated to New York to escape the generational trauma of the North Ixian wars.\n- Key Figures: Apollo (a warlord's crown prince) and Infernus.\n\n5. ZEPHYRS (The Atmospheric Spirits)\n- Overview: Naturally occurring wind spirits composed of raw elemental air magic. Rather than developing traditional aircraft, human society bound these spirits to power the propulsion systems of massive commercial and military airships. This practice is highly controversial due to the sheer unpredictability of placing public safety in the hands of volatile elemental entities.\n\n6. DEEP DENIZENS (The Aquatic Psychics)\n- Overview: Highly intelligent, gelatinous, and psychic anemone-like lifeforms native to "The Deep"—a sub-oceanic civilization thriving near the Bermuda Triangle's Astral Gate. They possess completely non-human anatomy, finding surface traits like skeletal human legs to be utterly unnerving. They are currently seeking refuge on land due to a cosmic entity ravaging their underwater world.\n- Key Figures: Viscous.\n\n7. SUBTERRANEAN NETWORKS (The Tunnel Species)\n- Overview: Specialized, subterranean mole-like humanoid communities that occupy the expansive, unmapped cavern systems beneath the Cursed Apple. - #17The Mendoza Syndicate
Keys: "Mendoza Syndicate", "Mendoza crime family", "Mendoza gang", "Mendozas"
Crime Syndicate / Fallen Criminal Empire\nOverview: Once the absolute undisputed kings of the city's underworld, controlling the vast majority of illegal gambling, smuggling operations, and protection rackets.\nStatus: The syndicate was recently shattered and scattered into warring remnants. A massive internal betrayal, combined with a ruthless, coordinated federal crackdown, completely dismantled their leadership structure.\nLegacy: Despite their collapse, their residual influence still poisons the streets. Former enforcers, rogue hitmen, and independent operators constantly clash to claim the vacant thrones and secure the syndicate's abandoned, highly lucrative black-market assets." Mendoza edit The leader of the Mendoza Syndicate, Mendoza was a crime lord who was forced out of Spanish Harlem by Ivy's vigilante justice.
While Mendoza has not yet made an appearance in-game, several characters give impressions as to what Mendoza is like. Krill described Mendoza as a "good client", but doesn't deny him being a "bad man" as described by Ivy.[13] Lash says Mendoza "says a lot of stupid shit",[11] and mentions that the only person Mendoza hates more than him is Ivy, which Lash considers impressive.[18] Yamato mentions that Mendoza fears Ivy.[19]
One time, Mendoza told Wraith to bet money on Lash taking a dive in a fight, which Lash proceeded to win, causing Wraith to lose "a lot of money".[11] Wraith herself dislikes Mendoza, and admires Ivy for "making Mendoza's life hell".[20] Similarly, Mendoza may dislike Wraith as Vyper says "Mendoza says hello" when killing Wraith in the ritual.[21]
It's suggested that Ivy may be worried that Mendoza would seek revenge against her by going after her family. The Hidden KingHidden King tells Ivy that it's only a matter of time before Mendoza goes after the Arroyos to hurt her.[22] While Ivy is trapped in the Baroness Hotel, The Doorman taunts her by asking who would be protecting the Arroyos from Mendoza while Ivy is participating in the ritual.[23]

The leader's brother, Yamato, sacrificed his life to ensure his sister Kaori and a handful of loyalists could escape to America.\nStatus: Operating with only a fraction of their original strength, Kaori took up her fallen brother's name (Yamato) and is aggressively fighting to rebuild the Seventh Moon's might across the New York underbelly, viewing figures like Wraith as her primary rivals for control."

- #24Abrams
Keys: Abrams
Hard hitting, hard headed, and hard drinking; Detective Abrams has been a fixture on the New York investigating scene for years. From stolen art, to missing persons, to ritual murders; Abrams didn't just take any case that came across his desk... he solved them.
But his days of following cheating spouses came to an end the day he opened his office door and found The Tome sitting on his desk.
No instruction was left for him save for a brief note scrawled in onyx blood that read "Don't let them have it". Abrams hasn't figured where the thing came from; but seeing as his home has been broken into, his office tossed on 3 different occasions, and his car firebombed he has a vested interest in figuring out what the hell is going on.
Abrams' goal in the ritual is to safely destroy the Tome.[1][2][3]
Biography edit Abrams is Ixian.[4] He was likely born in Ixia and can speak their native language.[5][6] Unlike Infernus, Abrams does not demonstrate control over fire. It's implied that Abrams didn't always live in New York, and it's unknown when he moved to the city.[5][7]
Abrams' office in The Binding of Oathkeeper For years, Abrams was a skilled private detective and a fixture on the New York investigating scene, known for taking and solving any case that came across his desk.[8] Abrams' detective agency is called "Abrams Investigations", with the slogan "we specialize in the unknowable and unthinkable".[9] One of his cases in the past had him working alongside Venator.[10] Abrams has also been investigating the Paradox Organisation.[11]
He lives in an apartment in New York, and his office can be seen in The Binding of Oathkeeper. Outside of work, Abrams is a regular at Jezebel's and plays in Wraith's weekly poker game.[12][13][14]
When the Tome was left in his possession, Abrams' life suddenly turned upside down as his home and office were broken into on several occasions and his car was firebombed.[8] With his life at risk, Abrams stopped going to Jezebel's and Wraith's poker games to focus on finding out what the Tome is.[15][16] Since his car was firebombed, Abrams has been forced to use the bus to get around.[17]
Abrams' business card in The Binding of Oathkeeper The Tome itself is shrouded in mystery. It's known to be capable of stealing life and seems to have a mind of its own, as it occasionally tries to fly away from Abrams (which Abrams can capitalize on, allowing him to cast Seismic Impact).[18][19] The Tome was also used to conjure Oathkeeper a long time ago.[20] Abrams expresses little control over the Tome,[21][22] and describes it as something "ancient" and "powerful".[23] Knowing that the book is dangerous and can't fall into the wrong hands, Abrams has chosen to participate in the ritual so the Patrons can destroy it, or tell him how to safely get rid of it.[1][2][24]
Personality edit Abrams is stubborn, stoic, and slightly pessimistic. He has a grounded view of the world and is skeptical that the Patrons will follow through with fulfilling his wish.[25][26] That said, Abrams is not unkind, often showing compassion and concern for tragic characters like Holliday and Pocket.[27][28]
While stoic, Abrams still gets flustered when talking to Lash and when Dynamo teases him about moving into Lady Geist's apartment in The Binding of Oathkeeper.[29][30]
Instead of simply dumping the Tome or hiding it somewhere, Abrams feels a personal duty to solve the mystery surrounding it first.[15] The duty of protecting the Tome has made Abrams paranoid towards anyone who shows interest in it.[31][32]
As a detective, Abrams is often inquisitive of his allies, asking questions about their lives (such as how Seven survived his execution).[33] Abrams values honesty and the truth, no matter how depressing it can be.[34]
Appearance edit Abrams is a tall burly Ixian man with blue skin, red eyes with black sclera, a well-defined jaw with a pencil moustache and stubble, dark blue hair with a front curl, and a pair of light blue horns with purple ends in his forehead, the left one of which is broken. He wears glasses, a blue overcoat over a white shirt, a purple necktie, black pants with suspenders, brown shoes, and leather straps over his coat with an alcohol flask pocket patched with bullet holes. He has a thin blue and purple tail. His weapon is a large snubnosed revolver that fires shotgun shells, similar to a Taurus Judge.
The Tome is a large and ancient leather-bound book with eldritch texts and drawings, glowing blue and handcuffed to Abrams' left hand.
Infernus edit As a regular at Jezebel's,[12] Abrams is friends with Infernus and refers to him as "Fern".[37] Abrams also calls Infernus "his bartender".[38]
Abrams is surprised that Infernus has never visited Ixia.[39]
Wraith edit Abrams plays in Wraith's weekly poker game.[14] Wraith calls Abrams "Abe" and considers him as one of her customers.[40][41]
Wraith wants Abrams to dump the Tome somewhere so his life can return to normal.[15]
Mo & Krill edit Mo and Krill are friends with Abrams, and play at Wraith's weekly poker games together.[42] Abrams has worked with Mo & Krill in the past.[43]
Abrams owes Mo and Krill $50 from their last card game together.[44]
Silver edit Silver is old friends with Abrams, referring to him as "Abe".[36] Abrams thinks Silver is "bad news".[45]
Silver offers to make "bad decisions" with Abrams again, and complains that he has become boring, which he replies that she just never noticed because he's "so damn handsome".[46]
Celeste edit Abrams is friends with Celeste and her found family. He knows Blockhead Lenny is having troubles and asks Celeste how he's doing.[47]
Abrams seems to be one of the few people outside of Celeste's family who knows she's secretly a unicorn.[48]
Venator edit Abrams and Venator faced an incident at a brownstone together. While the details aren't clear, Abrams believes that they could have saved more lives and that he should have stopped Venator, while Venator says he "did what had to be done" and that he alone carries the burden of lives lost. Venator thinks Abrams is a good man.[10]
Venator wants Abrams to give him the Tome,[49] believing it to be evil.[50]
Vyper edit Vyper seems to be familiar with Abrams, referring to him as "Abe".[51]
While Vyper comes across as friendly to Abrams, Abrams seems to frequently brush her off.[52][53]
Paradox edit Abrams has been investigating the Paradox Organisation outside of his case with the Tome.[54]
Paradox threatens Abrams to stop asking questions about them.[55]
- #25Apollo
Keys: Apollo
Apollo's wish is unknown, but he seems to be fighting in the ritual for the sake of Ixia.[1][2] He also seems to be fighting to test his skills and honor his family's name.[3][4]
Biography edit Born in Ixia, Apollo is the son and only child of the current ruler of North Ixia.[5] Referred to as "the Prince of Ixia",[6] Apollo was raised to value loyalty, honor, and his Ixian culture.[7][8][9] Growing up, Apollo was taught fencing at a young age, having learned Riposte when he was only 5 years old.[10] As Apollo got older, conflicts in North Ixia were rising, and Apollo was eventually told that, for his own safety, he was being sent to New York.[11] It's implied that Apollo still visits Ixia from time to time.[12]
Now a student at Blackmore Academy, Apollo decided that, instead of wasting time going to parties and dances, he'd spend his free time training rigourously with his family's ancestral blade, preparing for the day his father would call on him to come home.[11]
In the current day, Apollo is 18 years old.[13] He's the captain of Blackmore Academy's fencing team and seems to be a fencing champion,[14] hoping to one day represent Ixia at the Olympics.[15][16] With the upcoming Maelstrom, Apollo is participating in the ritual to honor his family name and to test his skills.[3][4]
Ixian is Apollo's native language.[17] His ultimate " Itani Lo Sahn" is Ixian for "I have no equal".[18]
Apollo says his life has been personally affected by political assassinations.[19] Notably, while he speaks often of his father, he never mentions his mother.
Personality edit Apollo holds his Ixian culture in very high regard.[9][20] He refers to the other playable Ixians, Abrams and Infernus, as his "brothers".[21][22] While Apollo doesn't hate humans, he believes Ixians are above them.[23][24] Apollo is content at Blackmore Academy,[25] but he refuses to see New York as his home and is only there because his father wanted him to be.[26][27]
Apollo is extremely confident in his skills and believes himself to be the best.[28][29] He holds honor and discipline in high regards.[30][8][31] His attitude often causes other characters to regard him as vain.[32][33]
Apollo believes he is in the prime of his life and can't waste it making memories.[34][35]
Appearance edit Apollo is a slim young Ixian man with red skin, amber eyes with vertical slit pupils and black sclera, blond hair with dark roots and an undercut, a pair of tall dark horns in his forehead, and a tail ending in a triangular tip with a golden ornament. He wears a red Blackmore Academy uniform jacket over a white shirt with unbuttoned collar, white fencing uniform pants and shoes with red highlights and the number "1", a white fencing glove in his right hand, and a golden ring with a black jewel in his left pinky finger. His weapon is a golden and black sword that shoots projectiles, with an elaborate rainguard and a red jewel at the pommel.
Information edit The symbol etched in Disengaging Sigil is Apollo's family sigil.[36] He has fond memories of his father teaching him how to cast it.[37]
Apollo believes Maximilian Fairfax is a "great man".[38] Both Apollo and his father are fans of Fairfax Industries.[39]
Apollo's father edit Apollo's father is referred to as a warlord, and has the authority equivalent to a governor and a general.[40]
Apollo is proud of his father and believes his father is proud of him.[41] While mentioned that Apollo's father expects great things from him,[42] Apollo claims that he isn't fighting in the ritual for his father.[43]
Apollo's father says "loyalty is everything" and "the first step to victory begins with crushing the enemy's hope".[7][44]
Apollo inherited his sword from his father.[45]
When killing Silver, Apollo mentions that his father would've turned her into a cloak.[46]
Graves edit Graves and Apollo are classmates at Blackmore Academy, and are each other's lab partners.[47]
Apollo believes Graves is a "decent" lab partner, but disapproves of her truancy.[48] Graves calls Apollo "the Golden Boy",[49] and doesn't hate Apollo as much as she wishes she did.[50]
Graves and Apollo are familiar with each other's parents, and insult each other over their parental relationships.[51]
The Doorman edit Apollo has stayed at the Baroness Hotel in the past.[52] He likes The Doorman and tipped him "last week".[53]
While the conversation is unfinished, The Doorman appears to give his best wishes to Apollo's father.
- #26Bepbop
Keys: Bepbop
Bebop's motivation and wish in the ritual is to cure Miss Shelly of her illness.[1][2]
Biography edit Bebop was created by Shelly Fisher in an act of "craftsmanship, willpower and sacrifice".[3] Assisting her in the junk yard during the day and listening to jazz at night, Bebop was the son Miss Shelly never had.[4] Bebop was created with access to his own free will, as Miss Shelly "didn't believe" in putting any bindings on Bebop to enforce his ethics.[5] As such, Bebop's love for his "mother" is genuine.[6] Bebop seems to have a soul and is capable of breathing.[7]
When Miss Shelly fell ill, Bebop needed to find a way to pay for her medicine. In the end, Bebop decided to take up pit fighting in the Bear Pit as the main source of income for Miss Shelly's medicine.[8][9][10] While he finds fighting for money an entertaining use of his time,[11] Bebop intends to retire once Miss Shelly is cured of her illness.[12][13] Bebop is trying to stick to honest work.[14]
As Miss Shelly's condition is getting worse, Bebop has decided to participate in the ritual so the Patrons can save his creator.[1][2]
Bebop is nicknamed as "the scrap golem".[15] Bebop himself was named after the jazz style "bebop".[16]
Personality edit Bebop was raised to be polite and proper.[17] He speaks highly of Miss Shelly and often offers to introduce people to meet her.[18][19][20]
Bebop doesn't particularly value human life,[21] referring to humans as "organics" and generally thinking of them to be frail.[22][23][11] That said, Bebop doesn't want to take up a career as an assassin as he knows Miss Shelly wouldn't approve of him killing people.[24][25] He also shows kindness to characters like Pocket and Victor.[26][19]
Though Bebop engages in pitfighting for the money,[10] he also enjoys it and finds it entertaining, particularly when it comes to hurting Lash.[11][27]
Bebop dislikes being perceived as different or lesser than humans for being a golem,[28][3] and would like to meet another like him.[29]
Appearance edit Bebop's model is inherited from Neon Prime. He's a tall futuristic robot with a red, gray and black chassis. He has a wide chest and skinny limbs, with the exception of his oversized left arm with a large red shoulder and a wrecking ball for a hand, that extends for his Exploding Uppercut. He has a small orange head with black wires that resemble a chonmage, one right eye and two smaller left eyes, all green, and a beak-shaped mouth. His body is slightly rusty. He wears only ragged beige shorts with samurai armor plates on the right side and a rope belt, and what looks like Japamala prayer beads on his left foot. His right hand can unfold to transform into a laser gun, and can also extend (and seemingly increase in size) for Grapple Arm.
In The Binding of Oathkeeper and his previous portrait, Bebop is depicted as a similar but more period-appropriate automaton with a large closed left eye, and a sea mine as his left hand.
Information edit Bebop can speak French.[30] He can't speak Japanese.[31]
Despite having been made in America, Bebop has a Cockney accent, commonly spoken in England by working-class Londoners.
Bebop knows how to bake biscuits.[20] He smells vaguely of cinnamon.[32]
Shelly Fisher edit The creator of Bebop.
Bebop refers to Miss Shelly as his "mother".[6] He's willing to do whatever he can to save her.[34]
Lash edit Both champions of the Bear Pit, Bebop and Lash have a rivalry fueled by hate for each other.[35][27][36]
Lash used to use an uppercut instead of Ground Strike, but refused to use it ever again after seeing Bebop use an uppercut.[37][38]
Bebop has beaten Lash in the Bear Pit once,[39] and Lash has beaten Bebop at least once afterwards.[40][41]
Neither Bebop nor Lash elaborate on why they hate the other so much.[42][43]
Lash has at least 87 reasons why he's better than Bebop.[44]
Bebop's weapon name, "Humble Pie", is a reference to the expression "eat humble pie", meaning "to suffer humiliation and apologize for a mistake." This is presumably a reference to Bebop winning against Lash in the Bear Pit.
Mo & Krill edit Mo & Krill watch Bebop's fights in the Bear Pit and consistently bet on him winning.[45] They know Miss Shelly and have tried to help her.[46]
- #27Shelly Fisher
Keys: Shelly Fisher
Shelly Fisher, also known as Miss Shelly or Ms. Shelly, is a widowed junk yard attendant. She created Bebop to assist her in her work and to be the son she could never have.
Shelly Fisher is an elderly black woman with grey hair and glasses.[2]
Miss Shelly has fallen ill and Bebop has turned to pit fighting in order to pay for her medication. While Miss Shelly's exact illness is unknown, it's implied that modern medicine can't save her.[3] While not eager to die, Miss Shelly was content with her life and has accepted her eventual death.[4]
Bebop's motivation and wish in the ritual is to cure Shelly Fisher of her illness.[5][6] He views Miss Shelly as his "mother".[7] Shelly doesn't know Bebop is a pit fighter, and he believes she wouldn't approve of his activities.[1] Shelly Fisher is resting at home during the in-game ritual.[8]
Miss Shelly's creation of Bebop is described as "an act of craftsmanship, willpower and sacrifice". Shelly created Bebop without any bindings (rules to keep Bebop under control) because she "doesn't believe in that sort of thing".[9] McGinnisMcGinnis is impressed by the craftsmanship used to create Bebop and shows interest in hiring Miss Shelly to work at Fairfax Industries.[10]
Miss Shelly is a fan of Jazz, which was the inspiration for the name Bebop.[11]
Miss Shelly's doctor is Johann Geist Jr., Lady Geist's grandson.[12]
- #28Billy
Keys: Billy, The Goat
Billy is a white hot ball of rage, furious at the very notion of...something. Maybe it’s the cops. Maybe it’s magic regulations. Maybe it’s the service at the gyro place downtown. (Not the good one. The other one.)
Don't ask him how he got the goat head.
Billy's wish is unknown, although the Patrons imply that Billy wants to change the world due to it being "corrupt and beyond saving".[1][2]
Biography edit Once human, Billy decided to get into eldritch/black/demonic magic to turn his head into a goat's.[3][4][5] While unknown if he meant to do it, Billy does imply that he got the goat head for a specific reason.[6]
Billy spends his time speaking "truth to power"[7] and fighting against "the Man", which seems to be people with power in the government.[8][9][10][11] Even though Billy screams of the ills of the world and believes it needs to change, he still pays his taxes[12][13] and spends most of his time committing small-time crimes in New York like looting and rioting.[14][15][16] It's implied Billy uses Shadow Weave to escape the police after committing crimes.[17]
Billy goes to circle pits and used to use Rising Ram in them before being told to stop.[18]
Billy has a mother who says Billy's head is "good for nothing".[19]
Personality edit Billy hates everyone. He especially loathes rich people, such as Lady Geist.[20][21] He does, however, compliment his allies when they're doing well.[22]
Billy is perpetually angry. Nobody knows why exactly Billy is so mad as Billy doesn't give an exact reason for his anger other than being vaguely mad at the world.[23][24][25] Billy believes that everyone must have something wrong with them,[26] and that most people think that they're better than him.[27][28][29] He often pushes people away when they try to connect with him.[30][31] Most heroes in the ritual believe Billy is an idiot and that he talks too much.[25]
Billy is highly skeptical of anything he hears. He doubts the Patrons will grant his wish,[32] believes the Baxter Society never killed any real monsters and that it was all a publicity stunt,[33] and doesn't believe the Adversary exists until he sees it with his own eyes.[34] While Billy often talks shit about his allies, he backs down when threatened or confronted by facts.[35][36][37]
Billy hates it when people talk about his goat head.[38][39][40]
Billy criticizes a Shakespearean Festival, but considers going once Paige points out that people there would view him as "their king".[41]
According to the Soul Urn, Billy has a tendency of quitting jobs prematurely.[42]
Appearance edit Billy is a slender man with a black and gray goat head, yellow eyes, spiky hair, tall ears with nails, an earring and an animal tag, and tall horns punctured with nails. His human body has white skin. He wears a spiky black leather jacket with many occult patches and pins, a yellow shirt that says "Mosh Fiend", striped black, red and green pants with hanging yellow and red suspenders, red socks, and tall brown shoes with green and orange shoelaces. His clothes are ripped. He carries a goat plushy on the left side of his pants, and has a fingerless black glove on his right hand, a spiky black bracelet on his left hand, and rings in his left index and middle finger. His weapon is a spiky orange submachine gun simlar to an MP5, with the words "cretin" and "spit it out" painted on the sides. He also carries a spiked bat, used for Bashdown.
Billy does a sign of the horns when riding the zipline. This can be a reference to both his actual goat horns and his love of punk music, as well as a common salute in Satanism and occult practices.
Billy's weapon name, Biquette, means "young female goat" in French.
Vyper edit Billy and Vyper are familiar with each other. While Vyper holds Billy in high regard,[44][45] Billy thinks Vyper is a moron.
- #29Calico
Keys: Calico
Once a decorated member of The Baxter Society, Calico left the august order once she realized that killing monsters for free was less profitable than killing people for money.
Now an in demand contract killer, Calico is living her best life ending someone else's.
Calico's motivation in the ritual is vague, but she seems to be wishing for power and protection.[1][2]
Biography edit Once a member of the Baxter Society, Calico was painted as a Judas for leaving the monster hunting organisation to pursue a career as an assassin.[3][4] With her skills gained from the Baxter Society, such as Return to Shadows,[5] Calico found herself to be an exceptional assassin, earning her the nickname "the most dangerous woman on the planet".[6][7] Calico once assassinated someone named "Siegfried" under Mirage's nose.[8]
Calico has been an assassin for at least 5 years, as she was hired to kill Pocket 5 years before the events of the ritual.[9] Pocket survived the assassination attempt due Calico's bullet missing their heart.[10] It's implied that this failed assassination earned Calico a reputation for "sloppy work" amongst other assassins, which she wasn't aware of.[11]
Now, Calico is being hunted by the International Police,[12] Scotland Yard,[13] and the OSIC.[14][15] While she has successfully evaded all of them so far, Calico has seemingly chosen to participate in the ritual to gain power and protection.[1][2] She also intends to "show off her product" by killing a Patron.[16] Calico has been waiting to summon the Patrons for a long time.[17]
Calico is consistently called "the black sheep" of the Baxter Society.[18][19] The Baxter Society doesn't seem to be after Calico.[20]
Calico has a son, who makes "terrible decisions" according to her.[21]
Though Calico's origin is unknown, she has a Received Pronunciation British accent.
Personality edit Calico is a snob. She views herself as "superior" and classy and finds it important to surround herself with "disposable" people.[22][23][24] Calico believes that her allies should listen to her and do as she says.[25][26] A few characters view Calico as egotistical,[27][28] although Calico thinks that she's just honest with herself.[29]
Calico is very knowledgeable about a variety of topics, including the Deep,[30][31] the Troubadour,[32] and Oathkeeper.[33] She's implied to know something about Victor's origins.[34]
Calico doesn't seem to have loyalties to anyone,[35] and criticizes Warden for his "blind loyalty".[36] However, there is an implication that Calico does slightly miss the life she once had, as her "heart is cold, but it is not dead".[37] It's implied that Calico has dreams of her time at the Baxter Society.[38]
Appearance edit Calico is a slender black woman, with yellow eyes hidden by her round glasses with white lenses, and black hair tied in a bun, with short curls behind her ears. She wears a purple jacket with shoulder pads and a long square coattail over a white shirt, baggy dark purple pants, heeled purple shoes and belt, and a purple glove in her left hand. She has a prosthetic right arm which she uses as her weapon. Her accessories are a pair of circular golden earrings and a large purple skull-shaped pin in her chest.
She carries Ava in her left shoulder, a purple Sphynx cat with full yellow eyes.
Ava edit Ava is Calico's Sphynx cat familiar.[39]
Calico adores Ava and refers to herself as "mummy" when talking to Ava.[40][41] She threatens anyone who may want to hurt or steal Ava.[42]
Pocket and Maximilian Fairfax edit Calico was the assassin sent to kill Pocket 5 years before the events of the ritual.[9]
Calico enjoys "tying up loose ends" when she kills Pocket in-game.[43] She also mentions that Maximilian Fairfax will "have questions",[44] lining up with Pocket's belief that Maximilian Fairfax was the one who sent Calico to kill Pocket.
Pocket, naturally, dislikes Calico for almost killing them.[45][46]
Grey Talon edit Calico used to work with Grey Talon in the Baxter Society.
While Grey Talon is disappointed in Calico for becoming an assassin,[47] he doesn't resent her and was content to leave her alone.[20][48][49]
Calico views Grey Talon as a "relic of a bygone era",[50] but also says she will mourn his death if she kills him during the ritual.[51]
Venator edit Venator knew Calico from when she was in the Baxter Society, but loathes her now that she's an assassin.[52]
Venator believes that, for the right price, Calico would be willing to kill Ava.[53]
When killing Calico, Venator mentions that it was "for Grey Talon".[54] He also references the 30 pieces of silver that Judas received for betraying Jesus when killing Calico, presumably referring to Calico leaving the Baxter Society.[55]
The Doorman edit The Doorman is familiar with Calico and likes her.[56][57] He talks with her about "professional interests in town", likely meaning that Calico told him about her job as an assassin.[58]
The Doorman loves Ava and, in the event that Calico will be unable to take care of Ava anymore, says he'll treat her "like a queen" at the Baroness Hotel.
- #30Celeste
Keys: Celeste
Even in a world of magic, some things are still rare and unusual. So what is a unicorn to do? Announce her presence to the world and potentially have poachers looking to saw off her horn? Or hide in plain sight at a Coney Island Side Show where most folk would assume her appearance was just part of an act?
Over the years "The Dazzling Celeste" has grown into one of the more popular attractions on Coney, and while the applause from a cheering audience is appreciated; what keeps her waking up in the morning is the found family she's made at work.
Keruba the Mermaid.
Blockhead Lenny.
Chickenwing.
Ted.
These were her people. So when she discovered that one of her own sold part of their soul in order to cover a gambling debt, Celeste knew it was time to step out of the shadows and do whatever it takes to get it back. Is revealing her power to The Patrons a risk? Yes. But that's tomorrow's problem... her family needs help today.
Celeste's goal in the ritual is to save her friend who sold a piece of their own soul. Celeste also seems to want safety about being a unicorn.[1][2]
Biography edit Not much is known about Celeste's life before joining the sideshow, although she has been hiding her identity as a unicorn her whole life.[3] It's implied she knows other unicorns, as she calls her powers "the mysteries of her people".[4] Celeste herself says she isn't divine, but she is powerful.[5] It's also implied that she's holding back her true powers.[6]
Celeste's existence as a unicorn is questioned by skeptics who don't believe unicorns are real.[7][8][9] Some of them believe that she glued a horn to her head.[10] Only her closest friends know her true identity as a unicorn.[2] It's currently unknown if unicorns look like humans or if Celeste is just using a disguise. Celeste says unicorns are supposed to be found in the woods.[11]
Unicorn blood is considered a delicacy by vampires.[12][13]
Celeste has frequently caused accidents and injuries when performing or training her acts.[14][15] She used to close kids' birthday parties with Light Eater until she faced multiple lawsuits, likely due to burning people with it.[16][17] Celeste used to be a regular at a glassblower's convention, although she stopped getting invited back after she added Shining Wonder to her set.[18] She frequently broke her friends' things while practicing Shining Wonder,[19] and ended up taking it out of her set after causing too many concussions.[20]
The Paradox Organisation have tried to steal Celeste's horn.[21] If Celeste is killed, Haze notes that the OSIC would want an autopsy.[22]
Celeste seems to have a Brooklyn accent.
Personality edit Celeste hates hurting other people, expressing remorse when killing enemies.[23][24] She often tells other misfits that people like them and her need to stick together.[25][26]
Celeste likes being on the sideshow, and thinks it's a comfortable life.[27][28] She often suggests to other characters that they come to the circus after the ritual.[29][30][31] Celeste occasionally offers people a job at the sideshow.[32][33]
Celeste likes to compliment other women, often commenting on their appearance.[34][35][36] Celeste doesn't like when people she finds pretty try to kill her (which is implied to have happened before).[37]
Celeste is scared about revealing her identity as a unicorn to the public.[38] However, she also feels tired of hiding her whole life,[3] believes that the secret was going to get out sooner or later,[39] and while she loves Coney Island, she feels like she's outgrown it.[28] While her nature as a unicorn is a secret to the world and, for the most part, her allies,[40][41] the enemy heroes in the ritual know that she's a unicorn.[42]
Celeste loves her jacket and thinks it's "awesome".[43]
Appearance edit Celeste appears as a skinny white woman. It's currently unknown if she also has a horse-like unicorn form. Her neck is elongated, and she has a gap in her front teeth. Her face and hair are covered with makeup, usually being stars and glitter. She wears large star-patterned earrings and has a large, glowing unicorn horn coming out of her forehead, that glows as she gains Radiant Daggers stacks. Her hair is a gradiant of blue, pink and purple tied into a huge twisting ponytail that extends to her waist. Celeste wears two small neckscarves: the inner one being blue and the outer one being red. Celeste's weapon is a baton with a similar pattern to her horn.
She wears a white, pink and blue acrobat outfit with purple details, a loose black jacket with spikes on her sleeves, fingerless purple gloves, and high-heeled black boots with unicorn horn-patterned heels.
Celeste's body is covered in monocromatic tattoos, alluding to tattooed ladies who worked as sideshow attractions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The designs of the tattoos include horseshoes, four-leaf clovers, stars, unicorns jumping through fiery hoops, ice creams, harps, carousels, and a poodle wearing a birthday hat.
Celeste's fingernails are each painted a different colour.
Blockhead Lenny edit Blockhead Lenny is one of Celeste's found family members.
Celeste dislikes Lash for beating Lenny in the Bear Pit.[44]
It's implied that Lenny is the friend who sold his soul.[45]
Mo & Krill edit Celeste is close friends with Mo and Krill.[46]
While on opposing teams, Celeste says people like her and Mo were supposed to stick together.[26] Additionally, Mo wants to cry if he kills Celeste.[47]
Krill tells Celeste that she doesn't need to spend her life hiding in a circus, likely meaning that they knew she was a unicorn before the ritual.[48]
Abrams edit Abrams is friends with Celeste and her found family. He knows Blockhead Lenny is having troubles and asks Celeste how he's doing.[49]
Abrams seems to be one of the few people outside of Celeste's family who knows she's secretly a unicorn.[11]
Infernus and Hank edit Infernus is friends with Celeste and her found family. Celeste invites Infernus to come over to say hi to her family at the sideshow.[50]
Celeste refers to Infernus as "Fern".[33] She's also familiar with Hank and asks Infernus how Hank is holding up.[51]
Wraith edit Wraith has a marker on someone named "Dutch", who seems to be a friend of Celeste as she demands Wraith to forget the marker.[52]
While Celeste isn't fond of Wraith, she does think she's "pretty charming".
- #31Doorman
Keys: The Doorman, Doorman
He's proper, he's polite, but the humble Doorman of The Baroness Hotel is more than meets the eye.
While he had only planned to experience life on this plane for a few weeks, The Doorman quickly discovered that the New York service industry was a great way to see the strange demands that please humans.
The Doorman's motivation in the ritual is to see the Patrons, since he hasn't seen them in a long time.[1][2] He doesn't seem to have a wish planned as he intends to return to the Baroness Hotel after the ritual.[3][4]
Biography edit The entity known as "The Doorman" is an ancient extraplanar fledgling god and cosmic being[5][6][7] who used to slaughter and torment humans a long time ago, feeling glee at their fear and misery.[8][9][10]
At some point, the fledgling god decided to experience life on Earth disguised as a human for a few weeks, and somehow became involved with the Baroness Hotel in New York as soon as it opened.[8] He adopted the title of "The Doorman" as his name to stay grounded in his new role,[11] and enjoyed it so much that he has stayed at the Baroness ever since.
The Doorman is capable of warping reality and bending space and time.[12][13][14] He claims to be able to see the future, although it's unknown if he's bluffing about it.[15] It's implied that the Doorman weakened himself to live amongst humanity.[16][17]
The Doorman once required the Baxter Society's intervention at the Baroness.[18]
The Doorman does not work at the Baroness alone, having coworkers such as "Jacques"[19] and "Francis".[20]
Personality edit The Doorman appears polite and respectful when talking to the other heroes, even if they are rude to him.[21][22] However, he has supernatural knowledge about them, and uses this to torment his enemies while they're trapped in the Baroness, or to convince them to stay and forget about the ritual.[23] During the ritual, he may fall back on his sadistic old ways when on a killstreak.[9][10]
The Doorman likes working at the Baroness since he gets to observe humanity.[24] He has a very dedicated work ethic, and finds that serving humans currently has a "novel charm" compared to his past experience of tormenting them.[8] He does not discriminate against any guests of the Baroness,[25] although he will kick people out if they cause a disturbance or break any rules.[26][27]
The Doorman often refers to the other heroes as "mortals", and believes they are weak and childish compared to him.[28][29][30] He looks forward to helping his allies "enrich their meaningless lives".[31]
Most heroes don't know the true nature of the Doorman and are surprised by his exceptional powers.[32] The OSIC seem to be aware of the Doorman's true nature, as they consider the Doorman participating in the ritual as "overstepping".[33] The Doorman occasionally teases his true nature in conversations with his allies, but doesn't linger on it.[8]
Appearance edit The Doorman appears as a slender young white man with somewhat long limbs, broad shoulders, glowing blue eyes that lack irises, perfectly symmetrical red hair with the exception of a front curl, and perfectly symmetrical freckles on his cheeks. He wears a classic bellhop uniform with a dark red jacket and round hat with gold and black accents, black pants with a golden stripe on the sides, black shoes, and white gloves. His jacket has a keyhole-shaped pin on his chest and keyhole-shaped buttons. He carries a glowing golden keyring behind his left hip.
His weapon is a bespoke handgun, similar to a Clair Automatic Pistol(in which the bullets were stored in a curved tube inside the grip). It is attached to another keyring, that shoots key-shaped projectiles, and floats as a golden halo behind his head when he uses Hotel Guest. He reloads his gun by throwing it in a small door portal, and then grabbing it as it exits through another door portal over his hand.
The Doorman's true appearance is unknown.
The Patrons edit The Doorman calls the Patrons "old friends" and refers to them as City Mother and Amber King.[34][35]
Both Patrons are seemingly familiar with the Doorman, with their heralds expressing surprise and joy at seeing him fighting on their behalf.[36][37] They respect the Doorman and view his murderous side as "who he was meant to be".[38]
Mirage edit Mirage and Nashala Dion are guests at the Baroness during their stay in New York. When on enemy teams, the Doorman feels sorry for killing Mirage,[39][40] and Mirage is upset for having to leave the Baroness.[41]
Calico edit The Doorman is familiar with Calico and likes her.[42][43] He talks with her about "professional interests in town", likely meaning that Calico told him about her job as an assassin.[44]
The Doorman loves Ava and, in the event that Calico will be unable to take care of Ava anymore, says he'll treat her "like a queen" at the Baroness Hotel.[45][46]
Wraith edit The Doorman thinks Wraith is a "delight" and is grateful towards her since she's a generous tipper.[47][48] He calls her a friend.[49]
Lady Geist edit The Doorman thinks Lady Geist is rude and doesn't expect any tips from her.[50][21] Lady Geist believes that the Baroness has lost its standards.[51]
Apollo edit Apollo has stayed at the Baroness Hotel in the past.[52] He likes The Doorman and tipped him "last week".[53]
While the conversation is unfinished, The Doorman appears to give his best wishes to Apollo's father.
- #32Drifter
Keys: Drifter
An ancient vampire roaming across America, the nameless monstrosity known as The Drifter has been preying on the living for generations.
Unlike most vampires, Drifter doesn’t value finery or titles and has naked contempt for vampiric laws and tradition. This refusal to toe the line has made him a marked man all over the North American Baronies; but while Viscounts and Elders cry for his execution, Drifter continues to do what he pleases...
Unlike the other heroes, Drifter isn't participating in the ritual for a wish, but instead for the carnage.[1] He views the wish as a "bonus".[2]
Biography edit The Drifter has lived for centuries.[3] His age is unknown, but he refers to New York as "New Amsterdam",[4] which implies he's been around at least since 1665.[5] He also implies that he knew Doc Holliday from the 19th century.[6] He goes only by "The Drifter" since he doesn't feel the need for a name.[7] The Patrons seem to know him.[8]
Drifter speaks in a Cajun accent from Louisiana, indicating that he may be associated with 17th century Acadian French immigrants.[9]
In the current day, Drifter has travelled a long way to come to New York.[10] He says that he's there for a different reason than summoning the Patrons,[11] and supposedly has an "old friend" he wants to say hello to.[12]
Drifter has been hunted by the Vampire Society (particularly Viscount Simon), the Baxter Society, the Swords of Saint Benedict, and Silver.[13][14][15][16] The OSIC aren't after Drifter,[17] but they would still like to see him dead.[18]
Drifter is not the Troubadour.[19][20] He has never met him before, and only knows him by reputation.[21]
Personality edit Drifter is a sadistic monster who loves murdering people and playing with his victims. He especially enjoys torturing his victims by murdering their loved ones to make them suffer.[22][23] In the ritual, Drifter enjoys getting competitive with his allies over who can kill more people.[24][25] Despite his bloodlust, Drifter claims to not be precious about murder and doesn't get offended if an ally steals his kill.[26] He has less fun killing people when his victims aren't made of flesh, are already dead, or if he's just putting them out of their misery.[27][28][29] Most heroes hate Drifter or are scared of him.[30]
Drifter likes to steal his victim's coats,[31] and thinks it's not fun if they willingly give it to him.[32]
Drifter doesn't hide his evil nature, but he may be willing to act friendly or polite to lower people's guards, such as when he convinces Bebop to invite him to meet Ms. Shelly.[10] Drifter also seems to be smarter than he lets on, displaying knowledge of high culture.[33] He believes that life is more fun when people accept their true nature,[34][35][36] and seems to view murdering as his purpose.[37] He doesn't need a name other than "The Drifter", as he sees himself more as a force of nature than a person.[7]
Drifter seems to be scared of fire, and expresses relief if he doesn't have to fight Infernus.[38]
Appearance edit Drifter appears as a middle aged man with pale white skin, red eyes, messy black hair, a stubble beard, and a wicked, unnaturally large grin. His proportions are exaggerated, most notably his large hands that appear red due to being covered in blood, with sharp black nails. He wears a dark brown jacket with a vampire teeth pattern on its back, over what looks like an open red shirt with a large collar, a gray shirt, greenish-brown pants, a gray newsboy cap, brown boots, and a fingerless glove in his left hand. All his clothes are dirty and ragged, with bloodstains in his shirt collar. Notably, his jacket has a leather belt, but he uses a rope as a belt for his pants instead. His weapon seems to be short range blood shards that he shoots from his hands.
Under Eternal Night, Drifter runs on all fours.
Information edit When using Eternal Night, Drifter whistles Hush, Little Baby, a lullaby typically sung by mothers to their children.[39]
Drifter has a variety of symbols on his right hand. It's currently unknown if the symbols are meant to be Alchemy Symbols or Hobo Signs. As the red-eyed man on the portrait in the Hideout also has the same symbols on his wrist, it's likely that the symbols are meant to be Alchemy, although it's currently unconfirmed.
Grey Talon edit Drifter and Grey Talon have a long history with each other.
Drifter has eluded death by Grey Talon's hands for a long time. He refers to Talon by his first name "Wesley".[40]
While Grey Talon despises Drifter,[41][42] Drifter holds Talon in high regards.[43][44]
Drifter enjoys tormenting Talon, seemingly by hurting his loved ones.[45][22] He believes Talon is a better fighter than Calico.[46]
There was a particularly brutal interaction between the two in Oklahoma.[47] Vyper mentions that Drifter is a "legend" in Oklahoma.[48]
Shiv edit Drifter knew Shiv from before he joined the Baxter Society.[49]
If Drifter kills Shiv, he calls him a "disappointment" and mentions that killing him feels "Shakespearean".[50][51][52] He also mentions that, had Shiv not "put himself in a muzzle, he'd be worried".[53]
When hunting Shiv, Drifter refers to himself as an "old friend".[54]
How Shiv and Drifter met each other is unknown.
Oathkeeper edit Drifter and Oathkeeper are old friends.[55]
Drifter can't believe Lady Geist could lock away "someone as fun as Oathkeeper".[56][57]
VenatorVenator edit Venator believes Hell is too good for Drifter if he kills him.[58] If they're on the same team, Venator promises to kill Drifter after the ritual.[59]
Drifter has killed other Venators before,[60] though he had higher expectations for Venator Quinn.
- #33Professor Dynamo
Keys: Dynamo, Professor Dynamo
As a Scientist, Professor Dynamo always had an inquisitive mind. So when a rift in space and time opened up in central park he was first on the scene to investigate – and while he expected such a majestic sight to be life changing, he was thinking more in a metaphorical way as opposed to having his body atomized and reduced to a tiny dying star.
But while his body is gone, his spirit and lust for knowledge lives on. A tenured professor at Columbia College, Dynamo looks to learn more about his condition while maintaining his class load, after all: he has future minds to inspire.
Dynamo's wish and motivation in the ritual is to get his human body back.[1][2][3]
Biography edit Dynamo's youth as an undergraduate student involved a lot of fist fights.[4][5][6]
Dynamo lost his body 50 years before the ritual, during the first Maelstrom.[7][8] He married Marla 19 years later,[9] although they seemed to know each other when Dynamo was still human.[10]
Dynamo has not touched an Astral Gate since his body was transformed,[11] although he has done a lot of research into Astral Gates.[12] Dynamo had an exculsive interview with the New York Oracle about his thoughts on Astral Gates, the Eclipse, and life without a body.[13]
Dynamo is known amongst students to be a good teacher.[14][15][16] Dynamo looks out for his students' wellbeing and has papers to grade at the time of the ritual.[17][18] Outside of his work as a professor, Dynamo works at a soup kitchen during the Winter season.[19] He also built and designed his own gun, the "Vonnegun".[20]
Dynamo has "vast" connections in science and academia. In The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist asks Dynamo to arrange a gala for the "brightest minds" to help with her failing ward.[21]
Personality edit Dynamo is inquisitive and optimistic. Most characters are apologetic when fighting Dynamo.[22]
Dynamo generally prefers working with people as opposed to lying to them, which is why he doesn't enjoy games like Poker.[23] Dynamo is apologetic when hurting people in the ritual,[24][25] and supposedly has a "temper" that he doesn't like to show.[26][27] However, Dynamo does get excited when he does well at killing people.[28][29]
As someone with an inquisitive mind, Dynamo is excited to see what happens when the Patrons get summoned.[30] While nervous,[31] Dynamo believes he needs to be firm and courageous enough to fight with his team.[32][33][34] In a Winter season voice line, Dynamo says he didn't sleep the night before the Maelstrom because he was "afraid of death".[35]
Dynamo doesn't like his condition as a dying star and believed it to be a curse.[36][37] That said, Dynamo considers his body to be "splendid, all things considered".[38]
Dynamo likes to go to the New York Library to think.[39] He hopes to visit South Ixia someday.[40]
Dynamo isn't a fan of the Occult Industrial Complex,[41] and appreciates the work of the Baxter Society.[42]
Appearance edit Dynamo has a spherical blue metallic body with modeled chest pecs, and layers of concentric circles ending in a "belly button", which can open to reveal the black hole inside during Singularity. He has robotic limbs with floating hands and feet, and a floating half pill-shaped glass head with small round glasses, round ears, and a hole in the back. Inside his head is a floating star pattern surrounded by darkness. He wears a brown plaid tweed jacket with elbow pads, yellow pants with a brown belt, brown shoes, and a green bowtie. He has a golden wedding ring in his left hand, an orange, black and white pin in his lapel, a round metal plate in his belt, and carries a large bag with blueprints, books, and a letter from the OSIC. His weapon is a bespoke handgun designed by himself[20] and made of metal, wood, glass and exposed wires, that shoots bolts of energy.
Information edit The name of Dynamo's weapon, the Vonnegun, is an homage to American author Kurt Vonnegut. Ironically, Vonnegut was famously a pacifist and claimed that a virtuous scientist was one who refused to develop weapons.[43]
When casting Quantum Entanglement, a crest of the sun with a planetary body orbiting around it appears as a destination marker. The crest is styled after Renaissance depictions of the sun, as it sports a hatched style and a serene face.
Marla edit Marla is Dynamo's wife.[44] They have been married for 31 years.[9]
It's implied that Dynamo mainly wants to get his human body back for Marla's sake.[45][46] The first thing Dynamo intends to do once he gets his body back is to "give Marla a hug and not let go for about 3 months".[47]
Marla bakes Dynamo key lime pies, even though he can't eat them.[48] She made him a key lime pie to share with his team after he completes the ritual.[49]
Dynamo and Marla have visited the Paradox Museum together.[50]
During the winter season, Dynamo and Marla go carolling together.[51]
Pocket and Maximilian Fairfax edit Dynamo is Pocket's godfather. He recognizes Pocket and says he would have helped them if he knew they were alive. Pocket didn't tell Dynamo that they survived because they weren't sure if they could trust him.[52][53]
Dynamo used to be friends with Maximilian Fairfax. Dynamo believes Fairfax has "warm nostalgia" for him and considers Fairfax a "complicated man" as opposed to a bad man.[54]
Sophia Arroyo edit Ivy's sister, Sophia Arroyo, is studying at Columbia under Dynamo.[55]
Sophia speaks highly of Dynamo,[56][14] and Dynamo thinks she's a great student, although Dynamo does notice that Sophia has been sleeping in class and asks Ivy if she could speak to Sophia about it.[57] Dynamo doesn't know that Sophia works for Wraith, although it's implied that he knows Sophia frequents Wraith's casino and warns Wraith not to take advantage of his students.[17]
Ivy worries her fighting Dynamo during the ritual would preconceive him against Sophia.[58] Dynamo reaffirms Ivy that Sophia's grades won't be affected by Ivy's actions in the ritual.[59]
Kelvin edit Dynamo and Kelvin are friends. They last saw each other at the Black Château, before Kelvin disappeared.[60]
Dynamo is a fan of Kelvin's books.[61]
Dynamo sometimes refers to Kelvin as "Kevin".
- #34Graves
Keys: Graves
The daughter of high-power defense attorneys, Darcy Graves grew up in a home where every conversation was a debate, argument, or negotiation. It was exhausting. But while her parents were often too busy meeting with clients or working on cases to bond with her, the dead were always there to listen.
Graves enjoyed her time in the cemetery. It was a quiet place to calm her thoughts and talk through her problems...but one day her one-sided conversations started to change.
It began with a faint whisper. A woman's voice that seemed to respond to Graves' complaints. Intrigued, the teenager listened...and followed the voice's instructions until it guided her to a lead-lined box buried in Van Cortlandt Park. But while most high school students would freak out if they were to unearth a severed lich hand, Graves was certainly not most teens. The hand now free of its prison, the lich's voice grew stronger... It had spent years looking to find a student she could pass her knowledge to, and Graves was eager to learn.
Now a fledgling necromancer, Darcy balances not only her homework at Blackmore Academy...but the demands of graveyard denizens, each of whom have their own unfinished business that they seek her aid in resolving.
Graves' motivation in the ritual is unknown, but she seems to be fighting on behalf of her mentor: the Lich.[1][2][3]
Biography edit Graves' parents are wealthy, owning a penthouse in Midtown Manhattan,[4] and enrolled her in the elite Blackmore Academy.[5] Their law firm seems to be called "Whiteside & Graves".[6] Graves has a sister.[7]
While Graves' age hasn't been mentioned, she shares classes with Apollo, who is 18 years old.[8][9]
As a fledgling necromancer, Graves is still learning about the craft from her mentor.[10][11] Her Jar of Dead was one of the first things the Lich taught Graves.[12] According to the Patrons, Graves works tirelessly to honor the dead and grant them peace, and many souls are in her debt.[13][14] During the ritual, Graves calls upon her favors with the dead to get them to help her out.[15] Part of Graves' work as a necromancer seemingly includes helping people communicate with the dead.[16][17]
Graves once wrote an essay about Johann Geist in a humanities course.[18] She's currently writing a paper on Wuthering Heights.[19]
Graves does babysitting.[20]
Personality edit Graves is cynical and snarky, but she also shows a sensitive side, being sympathetic to the plight of the dead.[21][22][23] She considers her role as a voice for them as "an honor".[24] The other heroes often think Graves is in over her head.[25]
Graves has a strong conviction that the Lich is helping her, and disregards those who warn that she may have been manipulated.[26][27][28] While Graves doesn't usually antagonise people she's unfamiliar with, she often pushes people away if they try to reach out to her.[29][30][31] Graves likes people who are blunt and direct.[32][33][34]
Graves seems to like cats,[35][36] and believes that the world would probably be better off if 90% of humans were replaced by cats.[37]
Graves has a low opinion of the law.[38][39] She likes to skip her school classes.[40]
Appearance edit Graves is a short, slim young woman with pale white skin. She has green eyes with dark makeup and long eyelashes, black lipstick and fingernails, a hooked nose, and short white hair with bangs covering the left side of her face, with a top knot on each side. She wears a red Blackmore Academy uniform jacket with a white shirt, a uniform gray skirt over 3 layers of black skirts leaning to her left side, pantyhose ripped at the knees, fingerless black gloves, and worn black boots. She carries a backpack with a skull motif and has a green pin in her jacket, a spiked bracelet in her left hand, chains over her skirt, black pendants in her chest in the shape of a skull, and a pair of black coffin-shaped earrings.
Her weapon is the necrotic severed hand of her lich mentor, flaming green. She carries her Deadhead skulls in a green jar. Her ghouls are skinny green undead humanoids with black legs and a floating skull head burning with green flames, like the lich hand.
The Lich edit Speaking through her severed hand, the Lich is Graves' mentor.
Graves idolises the Lich and considers her to be her best friend.[41][42] Graves promised the Lich that she'd do whatever it takes to complete the ritual, believing it would make her happy.[43][2]
While Graves deeply trusts the Lich, there are implications that the Lich is just using her to get what she wants.[44][45] While occasionally warned about the dangers of a lich's hand, Graves ignores the warnings.[26][27][28]
The Lich knows Grey Talon and warns Graves of him.[46] She also warns Graves about Seven's power.[47]
The Lich wants Abrams' Tome.[48] Graves also thinks her mentor would want to get her hands on Kelvin's stone.[49]
Apollo edit Graves and Apollo are classmates at Blackmore Academy, and are each other's lab partners.[50]
Apollo believes Graves is a "decent" lab partner, but disapproves of her truancy.[40] Graves calls Apollo "the Golden Boy",[51] and doesn't hate Apollo as much as she wishes she did.[52]
Graves and Apollo are familiar with each other's parents, and insult each other over their parental relationships.[53]
CalicoCalico edit Graves recognizes Calico. Calico apparently attended a Christmas party at the law firm of Graves' parents.[6]
Graves likes Calico and wants to stay in touch with her after the ritual.[54] She also likes Ava, despite finding her ugly.[35][36]
Mina edit Graves seems familiar with Mina and hates her.[55][56] Graves expresses glee at hearing about Infernus carding Mina on her 16th birthday.
- #35Grey Talon
Keys: Grey Talon, Wesley Grey Talon
A founding member of "The Baxter Society", Wesley Grey Talon spent close to 40 years hunting monsters that preyed on man before finally deciding to find a replacement and lay down his bow. Grey Talon's duties had meant that he never spent much time with his wife and kid, and now that his son had started a family of his own he realized that this was his last chance to reconnect with the people he loved.
Retirement suited Wesley. He made up for lost time with his wife. He doted on his grandkids. He cooked dinner for the whole family every Wednesday. He was happy.
Then he got the call.
The authorities claimed that it was a freak accident... that the fire consumed his son's house before anyone got a chance to escape. But Wesley knew better. His son's wife was an Ixian who could snuff out flame with a thought. If their bodies were found burned they had to be dead long before there was a fire.
And so Grey Talon has picked up his bow once more, and when he finds who's responsible there will be a bloody reckoning.
Grey Talon's motivation in the ritual is to bring retribution to the Friends of Humanity, an extremist neopolitical group whom he believes are behind the murder of his family.[1][2][3]
Biography edit Wesley Grey Talon was one of the founding members of the Baxter Society, creating the organisation 5-8 years after the first Maelstrom.[4][5] His dedication to the society resulted in books being made about his life and earning him a reputation as a "legend".[6][7] His dedication to his work, however, meant he was often away from home, which meant he missed watching his son grow up.[8] Refusing to make the same mistake for his grandkids, Grey Talon retired after roughly 40 years of service.[9] When he retired, Grey Talon was said to have more confirmed kills than anyone else in the Baxter Society.[10]
For a few years, Grey Talon got to enjoy the retired life with his family. This would change when Grey Talon got a call that his son, daughter-in-law, and grandkids were all found dead in a house fire. Knowing that his daughter-in-law was an Ixian who could control fire, Grey Talon knew that the deaths of his family were staged, and that somebody was behind it.[9] While he does not know for sure, Grey Talon believes that John Hathorne, the leader of the Friends of Humanity, was behind the staged murder.[1][3] Vowing revenge, Grey Talon has left retirement to pursue bloody retribution.[2] Grey Talon hopes that, once he exacts his revenge, he'll be able to find peace.[11][12]
It's implied Grey Talon's family died less than a year before the ritual.[13] In that time, Grey Talon has been working with Vindicta to murder members of the Friends of Humanity.[14] There was a Friends of Humanity rally in Boston, where the security team for the event were found dead with arrows stuck in them.[15] Despite being famous himself, Grey Talon's revenge quest doesn't seem to be public knowledge. There are rumors about his actions, which are scaring a "lot" of people.[16] Grey Talon doesn't care that his actions may sully the name of the Baxter Society.[17]
Grey Talon, while retired, is still heavily respected by the Baxter Society.[18] Some characters ask if Grey Talon is fighting on behalf of the Baxter Society in the ritual.[19][20][21]
Grey Talon's Guided Owl is named Rohan.[22] His son was named Nathan.[23] Grey Talon's wife is still alive, and it's implied that she wouldn't approve of his quest for revenge.[24][25]
Personality edit Grey Talon is a good man consumed by rage and despair. He isn't a talkative person[26][27] and especially dislikes it when people try to guilt him for his actions.[24][28] The life of a monster hunter, one with a high casualty rate, has hardened Grey Talon into a wise and stoic hunter.[29][30] He mentions that only some missions in the Baxter Society had "happy endings".[31] Despite this, Grey Talon misses the life of a hunter, and enjoys being able to hunt again in the ritual.[32][33]
Grey Talon is still mourning the death of his family.[34] Deep down, Grey Talon wishes he wasn't consumed by rage,[35] but feels a personal responsibility to exact revenge so he doesn't feel like he failed his family.[36][37] Grey Talon has also lost faith in justice,[38][12] and considers his life "hollow".[39]
Grey Talon is not a cruel man, as he often regrets fighting noble/kind-hearted characters like Dynamo and Ivy.[40][41][42] Most enemies respect Grey Talon and dislike fighting him.[43]
Appearance edit Grey Talon's current model is inherited from his design in Neon Prime. He's a short, senior but strong Native American man. He has brown skin, black eyes, and long white hair split into two braids. His right arm is a greenish-blue metal prosthetic. He wears a white shirt, an orange sweater with a diagonal cut on the right side, dark green pants with a brown cover on the left side, black shoes with brown soles, and two metallic earrings. He carries futuristic pouches on his belt. His weapon is a modern bow with a stabiliser and magazine-loaded arrows, seemingly based on a Fenris Magazine Bow or "Instant Legolas". His Spirit Snare is shaped like a dreamcatcher.
Rohan is a glowing green owl.
Grey Talon was handsome in his younger years.[44]
Information edit It's currently unknown which Native American tribe Grey Talon belongs to. Owls are commonly seen as a symbol of death in Native American folklore.[45]
Grey Talon has visited South Ixia and said it was "beautiful".[46]
Grey Talon's family edit Grey Talon loved his son, daughter-in-law and grandkids.[47][48]
Grey Talon's wife is still alive. Their relationship seems to be strained due to the deaths of their family and Grey Talon "throwing his life away" for revenge.[24][25]
Grey Talon views losing the ritual as failing his son.[36]
Shiv edit Grey Talon chose Shiv to act as his replacement in the Baxter Society.[49][50]
Grey Talon has high hopes for Shiv, despite his criminal past, and holds him in high regard, placing Shiv in the top 8 of people he'd want fighting alongside him.[51][19]
One of Shiv's goals in the ritual is to prove his worth to Grey Talon.[52]
Silver can't believe Grey Talon stood up for Shiv.[53] Venator warns Grey Talon that, if Shiv slips up, he won't be able to protect Shiv from the Swords of Saint Benedict.[54]
Vindicta edit Grey Talon and Vindicta have hunted the Friends of Humanity together and regard each other as friends.[55][56][57]
Vindicta calls Grey Talon by his first name and believes that, if her father was like Grey Talon, she would never have died during the Salem Witch Trials.[58]
Drifter edit Grey Talon and Drifter have a long history with each other.
Drifter refers to Grey Talon by his first name.[59]
While Grey Talon despises Drifter,[60][61] Drifter holds Talon in high regards.[62][63]
Grey Talon suspects Drifter could have killed his family, although Drifter affirms that if he did murder them, he would have made Grey Talon watch.[64]
There was a particularly brutal interaction between the two in Oklahoma.[65]
Calico edit Calico used to work with Grey Talon in the Baxter Society.
While Grey Talon is disappointed in Calico for becoming an assassin,[66] he doesn't resent her and was content to leave her alone.[67][68][69]
Calico views Grey Talon as a "relic of a bygone era",[70] but also says she will mourn his death if she kills him in-game.[71]
Haze edit Haze and Grey Talon know each other. She refers to him by his first name and sent a card when his son Nathan died.
They haven't seen each other for "a while".[72][73]
Warden edit Warden once looked up to Grey Talon and heavily respects him.[74][75]
When on opposing teams, Warden is shocked that Talon would willingly work for the Patrons.[76]
While Grey Talon appreciates Warden's conviction,[77] he believes that both he and Warden live "hollow lives".
- #36Haze
Keys: Haze
The Occult Security and Investigation Commission is a black box government organization that makes the CIA look transparent. It falls on the men, women, and entities of the OSIC to keep the country safe from sinister forces that are beyond the capabilities of local law enforcement.
As a member of the notorious Sandman Division, Haze is routinely tasked with infiltrating the dreams of persons of interest, to assess their threat level, and if needed... to put them to sleep.
Haze is fighting in the ritual on behalf of the OSIC.[1][2] Her wish is unknown, although the Patrons tempt her to wish herself a new life.[3][4][5]
Biography edit A sandman from the secretive OSIC, Haze's background is shrouded in mystery. She mentions being trained by the OSIC and has dedicated her life to them,[6][7] but any information on Haze's origins and how she became an OSIC agent is unknown.
Sent to participate in the ritual by the OSIC,[1] Haze has prepared extensively for the ritual by performing drills, research, stretching, divination, and fortune telling.[8]
Haze is nicknamed "Dreamwalker" and "Dreamstalker".[9]
Personality edit Haze works for the OSIC because she "loves her country".[10] She acknowledges that the OSIC is flawed, but in her eyes the ends justify the means.[11] She is extremely loyal to her superiors and her job,[12][7][13] although it's implied that she doesn't love being a Sandman.[14][15] She sometimes warns others to not bring the OSIC's attention to themselves, and is willing to turn a blind eye if they're not dangerous or designated as a target.[16][17][18] She believes OSIC agents should be thick-skinned, but still care about what they are doing.[19][20]
As an OSIC agent, Haze has knowledge on many subjects, including The Deep and the Adversary.[21][22] She has read the OSIC's files on the other heroes.[23]
Haze has gotten used to entering people's nightmares, as most of their fears are similar. She finds it scarier to see what her targets dream for.[24]
Appearance edit Haze is a supernatural athletic woman with smoky pitch-black skin, with a yellow accent under her face. It's unknown what species or race she belongs to. She has full yellow eyes, a yellow "X" marked on her forehead, and her brunette hair meshes with her head and is tied in a bun. She wears a uniform of an orange shirt with chest pockets and a black necktie, badges on her chest and arms, long black gloves, baggy waist-high black pants with two orange tracks on each side, black heeled boots with orange soles, a black backpack, and a large black belt carrying her knives. Her weapons are two silenced submachine guns.
Information edit Haze has friends, though she rarely talks about them.[25]
Haze appreciates quality knifework.[26]
Haze plays the cello for fun.
Agent Marlowe edit Agent Marlowe is implied to be one of Haze's superiors.[28][29]
Haze believes Marlowe would want to know about The Doorman's involvement in the ritual.[30]
Rem edit Haze and Rem are friends.[31][32][33] Haze promised to help Rem get home and dislikes him fighting in the ritual due to the dangers.[34][35]
Rem calls Haze his "mom".[36]
Rem sees Haze when he sleeps and claims that "she's him".[37][38]
Rem seems to have caused Haze some trouble prior to the ritual,[39] but how the two met and how they know each other is currently unknown.
Grey Talon edit Haze and Grey Talon know each other. She refers to him by his first name and sent a card when his son died.[40]
They haven't seen each other for "a while".[41]
Viscous edit Haze takes Viscous and his problems seriously.[21]
Haze wants to know more about The Adversary in case more creatures like it come through The Deep's astral gate.
- #37Holliday
Keys: Holliday
There are people who spent their whole lives dreaming about moving to New York. Holliday isn't one of those people. Content with being a Sheriff in a small town, Holliday enjoyed a career where the only time she had to use her gun was when trick shooting at the county fair...then the murders started.
Grisly and inhumane; the bodies were found with their ribcages ripped open... their innards picked apart as if by birds. Holliday tracked down the killer, a travelling folk musician that the media dubbed "The Troubadour", but when she confronted him he exploded into a murder of crows and flew away.
That was 6 months ago, and while the murders in central Illinois have stopped, Holliday's investigation has not. She believes that The Troubadour is travelling to New York, and when she finds him she's going to kill that evil son of a bitch.
Holliday's motivation and wish in the ritual is to catch and kill the Troubadour.[1][2][3]
Biography edit Holliday is the granddaughter of Wild West gunslinger Doc Holliday.[4][5][6] Her revolver belonged to her grandfather and is seen as a "family heirloom".[7][8] She inherited her revolver from her father, who also trained her to use it.[9]
Living as a sheriff in Macomb, Illinois,[10][11] Holliday's life before the Troubadour's murders was relatively simple, with her only using her gun for community events. She's been married more than once,[12] and doesn't want to have children.[13] She's also implied to be Christian.[14] Holliday's boots were a gift.[15]
When the Troubadour started killing people, Holliday tracked him down and confronted him before he turned into a murder of crows and flew away. The exact number of people the Troubadour killed is unknown, although The Doorman mentions it "pulled a lot of Midwest spectres".[16] Holliday had a sister who died,[17][18] and it's implied that she could have been a victim of the Troubadour.[19] The actions of the Troubadour was national news known as "the Macomb Massacre".[20][21] Since the initial murders, Holliday has been investigating the Troubadour for 6 months, with a lead that he's headed to New York.
Holliday's visual novel will tell the story of her hunt for the Troubadour.
Personality edit Holliday is emotionally closed off and dislikes small talk.[22][23] Other heroes call her a "trainwreck", which she denies.[24][25] She's sympathetic to others who had troubled lives,[26] and feels remorse for killing people she respects.[27][28][29]
Holliday was traumatized by the Troubadour's murders.[30] She avoids sleeping because of the nightmares she gets.[31] She hates the feeling of revenge, but feels like there's nothing else she can do about it.[32] Holliday implies that she frequently gets told not to hunt the Troubadour.[33]
Holliday doesn't like big cities like New York or Chicago,[34][35][36] and also dislikes travelling on airships.[37] She's described as a tourist,[38] but has no intention of sightseeing.[39][40] She wants to leave New York as soon as possible.[41][42]
Holliday feels pressured by Doc Holliday's legacy and tries not to think about it,[6] but hopes her actions would make him proud.[43][44]
Holliday is vigilant as a law enforcer and takes her job seriously.[45][46] The OSIC have a file on her, where she's portrayed as "competent".[47] That said, Holliday's mission has pushed her out of her jurisdiction,[48] and she's unwilling to let the law get in the way of her revenge.[49]
Appearance edit Holliday is a young slender white woman with blue eyes, short brunette hair with upward edges, and a small bang over her face. She wears a brown sheriff hat with an orange band, a reddish-brown jacket with a sheriff badge, an orange plaid scarf, a blue shirt, beige pants, and brown cowboy boots. She has a leather belt with a holster, bullets, and a drink flask. She carries her Powder Keg on her back. Her weapon is supposed to be Doc Holliday's revolver, but the current model looks like a modern rectangle-shaped revolver, similar to the Mateba 2006M
The Troubadour edit Holliday has been hunting the Troubadour since his murders in Macomb, intending to kill him when she finds him.[1][50]
It's unknown how the Troubadour feels about Holliday, but he doesn't know that Holliday is after him. Drifter warns Holliday that, if the Troubadour found out Holliday was after him, he'd see Holliday as his "hobby". Drifter tells Holliday to let go of her vengeance for her own sake.[51]
Captain Murphy edit Captain Murphy is an old colleague of Hollidays.
In Holliday's visual novel, Captain Murphy's receptionist spreads a rumor that Holliday wants to have an affair with Murphy, who is married.[52] Haze and Krill tease Holliday about the rumor.[53][54] YamatoYamato believes the rumor and threatens Murphy's life to keep Holliday in line.[55]
Allie Kincaid edit Allie Kincaid is a journalist for the New York Oracle.[56]
Allie offers to help Holliday find the Troubadour if Holliday will let Allie interview her. In Holliday's visual novel, Allie gets Holliday in contact with Seven.[57][58]
Venator edit Venator prays with Holliday before the ritual to try and help heal her trauma from the Macomb massacre. While it doesn't work, Holliday appreciates Venator for trying.[14]
Venator also warns Holliday to tend her pain and anger before it consumes her.
- #38Infernus
Keys: Fern, Infernus
Like most teenagers; Infernus was wild, rebellious, and impetuous. Unlike most teenagers, Infernus was a creature from another plane and had a supernatural mastery over fire. Needless to say: his youth was filled with no small amount of arson, murder, and evidence disposal. But that was then. Now an adult, Infernus has mellowed out considerably. He’s happy working at a bar with good live music, and talking to interesting people. That being said when someone at the bar gets belligerent or violent, he’s not afraid to dust off the skills he once honed.
Infernus' motivation in the ritual is to prevent Jezebel's Billiards Hall, the bar he tends to, from getting shut down.[1][2]
Biography edit As a second generation Ixian immigrant,[3] Infernus was born and raised in New York and has never visited Ixia.[4] He considers New York his home and doesn't follow news about Ixia or the Ixian war.[5] Infernus doesn't know how to speak Ixian because his parents only ever spoke English around him.[6]
Infernus used to work for the Mendoza Syndicate before he got replaced by Vyper,[7] and also worked with Wraith.[8][9] It's implied that he killed people at "Pier 31" during his youth.[10] When Infernus was around 18 years old, Hank helped him leave his life of crime behind by allowing him to become a bartender at Jezebel's Billiards Hall.[11][12] It's unknown how long Infernus has been a bartender for, although him carding Mina on her 16th birthday could mean that he's been working there for a least 7 years if Mina is the same age as Pocket.[13][14]
In the current day, Jezebel's is under threat of being shut down by the Alchemy Bureau due to a large number of infractions.[15][16] Dedicated to helping Hank, Infernus has decided to participate in the ritual to save the bar from closing.[1][12] Infernus' visual novel will tell of the story of Infernus trying to save Jezebel's.
Personality edit Infernus is laid-back and friendly. A lot of characters are familiar with him through being regulars at Jezebel's, and Infernus himself claims to be friends with "a lot" of other bartenders in Manhattan.[17][18] He's fashionable and enjoys dressing well.[19][20]
Some characters question why Infernus is a bartender despite being a powerful fire-bending Ixian, but he finds value in doing good things after spending his youth making bad choices and believes becoming a bartender was the best thing he ever did.[21][22] He's haunted by his past and worries that he'll enjoy the thrills of the ritual and potentially fall back into a life of crime.[23][24][25]
Infernus is confident in his bartending skills, claiming to make the best sidecar in Manhattan.[26] Other characters also appreciate his cocktails and his work as bartender.[27][28][29]
Infernus is a fan of Cadence's music and wants to watch her set after the ritual.[30]
Appearance edit
Unused Infernus tail model Infernus is a slender Ixian man with black skin, eyes hidden behind round orange glasses, elaborate glowing red patterns in his arms, and burning cornrow hair under a red fedora with a black band. He wears a black vest and necktie over a red shirt, black pants with a brown belt and suspenders, and black shoes. He carries a hand towel over his left shoulder, and cocktail glasses and mixers in his belt, in which he carries his Napalm. He has an "8" symbol in his belt buckle and in the back of his suspenders. He shoots fire from his right index and middle fingers as a weapon.
Hank edit Hank is Infernus' boss and friend at Jezebel's.
Infernus wants to save Jezebel's for Hank's sake because Hank "saved his life" by helping Infernus when he was a young adult.[11][12][31]
Since Infernus doesn't want Hank to worry about him, he hasn't told Hank about his involvement with the ritual.[32]
Wraith edit Wraith and Infernus used to work together while Infernus was a criminal.[8] While on the same team, Wraith tries to coax Infernus back into his criminal past.[33][34]
Wraith believes Infernus' work as a bartender is "boring". She also believes Infernus misses her, but he denies it.[9]
Infernus plays in Wraith's weekly poker game.[35] However, he tells Mo & Krill that he wants to stay away from Wraith out of fear of her pulling him back into crime.[36]
According to Graves, Wraith told Blackmore Academy students that play cards with her about Infernus' criminal past "with the mob".[37]
Lady Geist edit As someone who frequents Jezebel's, Lady Geist is friends with Infernus and Hank.[38]
Lady Geist refers to Infernus as "Fern" and "her bartender".[39][40] She likes Infernus' recipe of gin and tonic.[27]
As Jezebel's is under threat of closure, Lady Geist offers to help Infernus save the bar.[41] In one pathway in The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist gives Oathkeeper to Hank on the promise of providing the resources needed to keep the bar open.[42]
Mo & Krill edit Infernus is friends with Mo and Krill.[43]
Mo & Krill are regular patrons at Jezebel's, and offer to help Infernus prevent Jezebel's from closing.[44]
Celeste edit Infernus is friends with Celeste and her found family. Celeste invites Infernus to come over to say hi to her family at the sideshow.[45]
Celeste refers to Infernus as "Fern".[46] She's also familiar with Hank and asks Infernus how Hank is holding up.[47]
Mina edit Infernus once kicked Mina out of Jezebel's for using a fake ID on her 16th birthday.[13] She attempted to bribe him with money, to which he declined.[48]
Infernus' other patrons edit As a bartender, Infernus is familiar with a lot of characters who frequent Jezebel's.
These characters include but aren't limited to: Abrams,[28] Kelvin,[49] Lash,[50] , Pocket,[51] the ShopkeeperShopkeeper,[52] Shiv,[29] and Silver.[53]
Infernus' friends and regular patrons call him Fern.
- #39Ivy
Keys: Ivy
The gargoyle didn't know what was happening when it sprang to life... just that a big human and a small human were being hurt. And so the gargoyle leapt to action, sending the attackers fleeing in horror. The small human said thank you and asked the gargoyle's name. The gargoyle didn't have one. And so the small human said, "I'm going to call you Ivy." The gargoyle, being covered in ivy at the time, thought it was a bit obvious, but decided to go along with it for the small human's sake.
The humans asked if Ivy would come home with them so they could show their appreciation, and so Ivy walked with them. That night she learned much. The family were called The Arroyo's. The little one, Sophia. Mofongo is what they called a plate of deliciousness. But most importantly, she learned that the people attacking them were called "The Mendoza Syndicate", and they were hurting people...nice people like The Arroyo's.
18 years have passed since the day the Arroyo's took Ivy home... and during that time she made it her mission to dismantle the Mendoza Syndicate and free Spanish Harlem from its grasp. However the thing about dedicating your life to a single pursuit for nearly 2 decades is that you don't really know what to do once you achieve it. For the first time in her life, Ivy is prepared to venture outside of Spanish Harlem and see what the world has to offer beyond vigilante justice.
Ivy has a few motivations for being in the ritual. She wants to keep Spanish Harlem safe,[1] make life better for the Arroyos,[2][3] find her new purpose in life now that the Mendoza Syndicate has been dismantled,[4][5] help Carlos Arroyo secure his place as New York's mayor,[6][7] and (if she finds out about Sophia's job as Wraith's bookmaker)[8][9] keep Sophia out of trouble.[10]
Biography edit Ivy has been alive for 20 years.[11] She is a gargoyle, and was made of stone before she came to life,[12] being able to transform back into stone during Stone Form.[13] Ivy seems to have a digestive system as she can eat mofongo.[14] It's currently unknown how Ivy came to life.
It took Ivy 18 years to dismantle the Mendoza Syndicate.[15] Ivy managed to take down the syndicate "without murdering everybody",[16] and let Mendoza himself live after he said he'd leave New York.[17][18] Ivy used to buy powerful items from the ShopkeeperShopkeeper during her offense against the Mendoza Syndicate.[19] After successfully dismantling the Mendoza Syndicate, Ivy was famously known as "the Savior of Spanish Harlem",[20][21] with news of her efforts reaching across the United States due to public interest.[22]
With Mendoza gone, Ivy had completed her purpose as a vigilante and is now looking for a career.[23][4][24] She's also just recently started to leave Spanish Harlem.[15][25] Ivy's visual novel will show Ivy's efforts to get a job and support the Arroyos.
Ivy is implied to be Catholic.[26][27]
Personality edit Ivy is kind, friendly and noble. She cares about people and just wants to help them.[28] Ivy feels a personal obligation to get a job to support the Arroyos even though she knows they'd never charge her rent.[29] Most characters like Ivy and are apologetic when fighting her.[30] While kind, Ivy doesn't hate violence, and does enjoy punching criminals.[31] Ivy wants to have a hug whenever she's sad.[32][33]
Ivy dislikes being called the "Savior of Spanish Harlem" as she just wanted to make her neighborhood safe.[34] She also dislikes organized crime due to her history with Mendoza,[35][36] and doesn't understand why characters like Bebop and Mo & Krill do bad things for money.[37][38] Ivy prefers to fight crime without resorting to murder.[16]
Ivy's hobbies (that don't involve violence) include people-watching, plants, and flying around New York.[24][39][40][41] Ivy loves New York and considers it the greatest city in the world.[42] As she has only recently started leaving Spanish Harlem, Ivy is looking forward to sightseeing.[25] She wants to watch South Pacific.[43]
Ivy doesn't care about who made her or how she came to life as, in her eyes, her life started when she met the Arroyos, and anything before that doesn't matter to her.[44] Ivy doesn't enjoy using Stone Form as she dislikes being a statue.[45][46]
Appearance edit Ivy is a short and slender gargoyle with a beige-skinned androgynous body, a pair of large wings in her back, a reptile-like face with big green-yellow eyes with vertical slit pupils, short black hair with bangs on the sides, tall ears, and a joyful smile with two big teeth in her lower mouth. Her back is hunched, making her look shorter than she really is. She has 4-fingered hands, digitigrade feet with 2 toes, and a long tail with stone spikes at the end. She wears wine-red pants with suspenders and a newsboy cap with holes for her two small horns. She has a nose ring, stone bracelets in her hands and feet, vines covering her hands and arms in the shape of gloves, and the Roman numeral "IV" carved on her back. Her weapon is similar to a British Sten Mk. 5 submachine gun, with two side cartridges in a crossbow shape, and covered in vines.
Ivy sits in a squat during Stone Form, presumably in the pose she had before she came to life.
The Arroyos edit The Arroyos are Ivy's adoptive family. Ivy loves the Arroyos and thinks they're an amazing family.[42] She is also reluctant to leave the Arroyos on their own for too long,[47][48] likely due to the fear of them being hurt while she's away.[49][50][51] Like Ivy, the Arroyos are implied to be Catholic.[27]
Carlos Arroyo, Ivy's adoptive father, is a first-grade schoolteacher[52] running an election campaign for mayor of New York,[53] and Ivy is supporting him as "she believes in Carlos".[54][7] Ivy idolises Carlos and often asks herself what he would do in her situation.[55][56] Carlos tells Ivy that "it takes more muscles to frown than to smile" and "you can make opportunities, but you can't make people take them".[52][57] Carlos' wife is named Maria.[58]
Sophia Arroyo (or Sophie) is Ivy's sister who recently started to study at Columbia College under Dynamo.[29][59][60] Unbeknownst to Ivy, Sophia works for Wraith as her bookmaker to pay for her tuition.[8][9] One of Ivy's potential motives in participating in the ritual is to keep Sophia safe.[10] Sophia was the Arroyo who named Ivy.[11] In one of the storylines in Ivy's Visual Novel, Ivy finds out that Sophia is working for Wraith.[9]
Manny Arroyo is Ivy's little brother who Ivy takes to Paige's story time.[61] The Arroyos enjoy it when Ivy flies them around the city,[62] and Ivy believes her siblings would love to watch her win in the ritual.[63]
Mendoza edit Mendoza is the leader of the Mendoza Syndicate. After 18 years of vigilante justice, Ivy succeeded in her mission to dismantle the criminal empire and force Mendoza to leave Spanish Harlem.[17] While Mendoza told Ivy that he'd leave New York, he still operates in secret somewhere in the city.[18]
According to Lash, Ivy is the person Mendoza hates the most in New York.[64] Yamato mentions that Mendoza also fears Ivy.[65]
Ivy seems to be afraid that Mendoza will come after the Arroyos in order to hurt her.[49][51]
Dynamo edit Ivy's sister, Sophia Arroyo, is studying at Columbia under Dynamo.[66]
Sophia speaks highly of Dynamo to Ivy,[67][68] and Dynamo thinks she's a great student, although Dynamo does notice that Sophia has been sleeping in class and asks Ivy if she could speak to Sophia about it.[60] Dynamo doesn't know that Sophia works for Wraith, although it's implied that he knows Sophia frequents Wraith's casino and warns Wraith not to take advantage of his students.[69]
Dynamo offers to give Ivy a reference to help her with her job searching.[23]
Ivy worries her fighting Dynamo during the ritual would preconceive him against Sophia.[70] Dynamo reaffirms Ivy that Sophia's grades won't be affected by Ivy's actions in the ritual.[71]
Paige edit Ivy knows Paige from Manny Arroyo's story time.[61] She likes Paige and wants to start a book club with her.[72][73]
VyperVyper edit Vyper used to work for Mendoza, and was caught by Ivy in the past.[74][75][76] Vyper knows that Sophia is working for Wraith, but doesn't want to get involved in "family drama" unless there's a will involved.[8] Vyper is envious of Ivy's nickname.
- #40Kelvin
Keys: Kelvin
A famed adventuring scientist, Kelvin made it his life's mission to explore and understand the unknowable. So naturally when rumors surfaced regarding an 8th astral gate hidden in the arctic, Kelvin couldn't build an expedition team fast enough. Assembling the brightest minds of his generation, Kelvin and his team set forth with much fanfare.
They never returned.
A year and a half later the frozen body of Kelvin was found by a fishing trawler, his corpse clutching a rock etched with glowing runes. The crew chipped away at the ice, looking to get a closer look at the body and were shocked when Kelvin opened his eyes. They checked his vitals... there was no pulse. They sought to bandage his open wounds... there was no blood. And yet, impossibly, Kelvin was "alive".
Having no memory of what happened on the expedition, Kelvin is looking for answers.
Kelvin's motivation and wish in the ritual is to rediscover what happened during his expedition to the Arctic.[1][2]
Biography edit As a famous explorer, Kelvin has written popular books about his adventures.[3][4] One of his past expeditions was located at Ixia.[5]
Kelvin is consistently called an "Ice Wight" due to his undead state.[6] Kelvin believes the correct term is "Revenant", although he's unsure if there's really a difference.[7]
The exact cause of Kelvin's condition is unknown, but Kelvin believes it may be related to the glowing rock strapped to his back. For this reason, Kelvin hasn't taken off his parka since the expedition just in case the rock is the only thing keeping him alive.[8] Due to not changing his clothes, Kelvin's parka stinks.[9][10] The OSIC want to ask Kelvin questions about his undead condition.[11]
Kelvin's ice abilities were created with a mix of science and magic.[12][13] They seem unrelated to his glowing rock or undead condition, although he claims to be the only person able to safely use Arctic Beam,[14][15] likely due to the fact that Kelvin doesn't get cold anymore.[16]
Kelvin seems to have a Scandinavian accent.
Personality edit Kelvin is confident and optimistic. He often calls other people "friends".[17][18] According to Apollo, Kelvin is known as one of humanity's bravest.[19]
Kelvin is somewhat egotistical, as he likes to boast about being "the best".[20][21][22] The Patrons feed into Kelvin's ego, offering him glory.[23][24] Kelvin is also quite blunt with people,[25][26] which causes him to have a reputation for being a little judgmental.[27]
Kelvin allegedly wrestles with a lot of guilt about the expedition.[28] He's been meeting with family members of his crewmates who never returned from it.[29] Despite the guilt, Kelvin remains optimistic about the ritual and his future.[30][31]
Kelvin has mixed feelings about his undead state. He thinks his condition is sad,[32] but he also believes he was gifted unnatural life and that he shouldn't squander his second chance.[33]
Kelvin likes to drink single malt Scotch.[34][35] He used to frequent Jezebel's before his Arctic expedition.[36]
Appearance edit Kelvin is a middle-aged white man with blue eyes, ginger hair, and a thick beard. His hair and moustache are graying. He wears a thick blue parka with white fur, blue winter pants, white furry snow boots with spiked soles, and beige gloves. He carries a backpack attached to a large dark blue bone-shaped rock with glowing tribal carvings. He carries metal bottles, a purse, and various trinkets in his belt and backpack. His weapon is a two-handed gun that shoots snowballs.
Ettrick edit One of Kelvin's old friends was someone named "Ettrick", who Kelvin pushed away due to Ettrick's ambitions.[37] At the fundraiser for Kelvin's Arctic expedition, Ettrick "made a scene". When Kelvin returned from the expedition, he tried to find Ettrick but couldn't.[38] Kelvin seems remorseful about Ettrick, and believes that "if someone's going to kill him, it's going to be Ettrick".[39][40]
Seven edit Seven has a one-sided hatred towards Kelvin for unknown reasons.[41][42][43]
Kelvin thinks Seven "seems familiar".[44] When being healed by Kelvin, Seven is reminded of "old times".[45]
Both Seven and Kelvin have an interest on researching Astral Gates.[46][47]
Seven believes Kelvin has a bigger ego than Lash.[48]
A likely possibility is that Seven is Ettrick. Seven believes that if anyone's going to kill Kelvin, it's going to be him, mirroring what Kelvin says about Ettrick.[49][40] Kelvin pushed Ettrick away due to his "ambition", which aligns with Seven's ambition to achieve apotheosis.[50] Seven also believes that mentors "use the young to achieve glories they could not achieve on their own", possibly referring to Kelvin.[51]
Dynamo edit Dynamo and Kelvin are friends. They last saw each other at the Black Château, before Kelvin disappeared.[52]
Dynamo is a fan of Kelvin's books.[53]
Dynamo sometimes refers to Kelvin as "Kevin".[54]
Lady Geist edit Kelvin's Arctic expedition was funded by Lady Geist.[55][56] Lady Geist takes great offense if Kelvin is on the enemy team.[57][58]
Infernus edit Kelvin used to frequent Jezebel's before his Arctic expedition and is friends with Infernus.[36][59] Kelvin knows about Infernus' past as a criminal and scolds him while he's on the enemy team.[60][61]
Kelvin incorrectly assumes Infernus was born in Ixia.[62]
Paradox edit Kelvin is one of Paradox's targets. She says that her colleagues may have already broken into his home before the ritual started.[63]
The Paradox Organisation holds Kelvin in high regard, as they consider him "a thief who steals from the dead".[64]
Paradox herself finds Kelvin fun to mess with.[65] She also thinks he's a "sanctimonious bastard" who acts superior to others.[66][67]
Victor edit Victor and Kelvin hoped that they could stick together, as they're both walking corpses.[68][69]
Kelvin tells Victor to make the most of his unnatural life, suggesting that Victor travel, write a book, or find love. Victor brushes off the advice.[70]
Paige edit Paige idolises Kelvin and loves his stories.
- #41Lady Geist
Keys: Lady Geist, Lady Jeanne geist
Once, Lady Jeanne Geist was the toast of the town. But as time passed and her beauty faded she found herself further and further from her glory days in High Society until finally she was nothing more than a frail woman in a nursing home, telling stories of a glorious past. And that’s when Oathkeeper revealed himself. A powerful spirit from another plane, Oathkeeper offered her a path to reclaim her past glories… he could restore her youth; all she had to do was drain the essence of the living to sustain herself.
Geist was torn. Obviously murder was ghoulish business, and undoubtedly Oathkeeper was not an entity that could be trusted… but still, the thought of having a second chance of reliving her youth was too good to pass up. And so she concocted a plan: after making a pact with Oathkeeper she would bind and ward him, limiting his influence and pull over her. Oathkeeper would still get fed; but on her terms, not his.
However, as years have turned to decades; the strength of the Ward has weakened, and Oathkeeper hungers more than he ever has in the past…
While her exact motivations change depending on what path she takes in The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist's main goal in the ritual is to prevent Oathkeeper from breaking free and killing her.[1][2][3][4]
Biography edit Lady Jeanne Geist (married name) was born in France in the early 1800s. She married German artist Johann Geist, and moved to America at some point in her life.[5] Jeanne and Johann had a son named Walter in 1850, and Johann died in 1880.[6] Her gun was a gift from Johann.[7]
Circa 1890s, when Jeanne was an old lady in a nursing home, the first Maelstrom happened, alerting the public to the existence of the supernatural.[8] At this time, the spirit Oathkeeper approached Jeanne with an offer: Jeanne would make a pact with Oathkeeper to regain her youth in exchange for draining the life of others. She was initially reluctant, but accepted the deal on the grounds that she would choose who dies. However, with the help of Walter, she made a ward to keep Oathkeeper under control. As the ward was "against the spirit of the deal," Oathkeeper promised to make Jeanne suffer if he ever broke free. After Walter died, the responsibilities of maintaining the ward fell on his son, Johann "Jr.", who maintains the ward to the current day.
Now, 50 years after her initial pact and on the eve of the second Maelstrom, Geist has to decide how she'll deal with Oathkeeper, and whether she'll continue to kill others to stay young or accept her natural aging and eventual death.[9]
As the ward containing Oathkeeper is weakening, Lady Geist has to kill more frequently to stay young, going from being able to kill one person to last throughout "swimsuit season", to only getting 2 months of youth for killing three people. Her main victims are usually the homeless.[10][11]
Personality edit Lady Geist holds her public image in extremely high regard.[12][13][14] She seems to have a reputation for being ruthless and doesn't want any acts of kindness to soften her image.[15][16] Lady Geist is exceptional in social settings, being able to "work the room" well enough to impress McGinnis.[17]
Lady Geist is elitist, holding contempt for those of lower social status, as well as for rich people who come from "new money".[18][19] She values art and high culture.[20][21] She's fashionable and well-versed in notable haberdasheries and brands.[22][23][24]
Lady Geist has no moral issues with murdering people, often preferring to kill victims while they're helpless.[25] Despite this, Lady Geist doesn't enjoy killing people, instead seeing it as the only way to survive.[26][27] The thought of aging terrifies Lady Geist.[28]
While cruel, Lady Geist holds the memory of her deceased husband and son in high regard.[29][30][31] However, she only cares about her grandson as long as he can be useful to her.[9]
The public are unaware of Lady Geist's deal with Oathkeeper, although rumors about it are circulating.[32][33] The other heroes in the ritual are fully aware that Oathkeeper is bound to Lady Geist. The other heroes often describe Lady Geist as "evil" and a "monster".[34]
Appearance edit Lady Geist appears as a beautiful, voluptuous young woman with pale white skin. Her portrait appears as a senior woman when on critical health. She has green eyes, white hair swept to the left side, a beauty mark on her right cheek, and green fingernails. Her right arm has long, sharp fingers and glows green due to Oathkeeper being attached to it, with a metallic ward in the middle of the upper arm. She wears a green corset dress with a cut on the right leg side, black pantyhose, black shoes with tall heels, a brown fur shawl, and a small dark green purse. Her accessories are green earrings and a 3-pointed green headpiece, both with a skull motif, and a metal necklace with a green heart gem. Her weapon is a white revolver.
Information edit Lady Geist has an old grudge against the Paradox Organisation after they stole one of her husband's paintings 50 years ago.[35][36][37]
Lady Geist seems to own a foundation for homeless people.[38] Johann Geist used to take her to "hundreds" of fundraisers in the past.[17]
Lady Geist enjoys going to Jezebel's and offers to help prevent the bar from being shut down by the Alchemy Bureau.[39][40][41] She used to like the Baroness Hotel, but believes their "standards went to hell".[42][43] Lady Geist visited the Paradox Museum once, and thought it was "cliché and overwrought".[20]
It's implied that, had Lady Geist made her deal with Oathkeeper transparent, she would've been hunted down by the Baxter Society.[44] The OSIC are aware of her deal with Oathkeeper and are keeping an eye on her, but haven't sent a Sandman after her yet.[45][46][47]
Lady Geist's hair smells vaguely like flowers.[48]
Geist is a German word that can be translated as "spirit/mind".
Alongside Mina, Lady Geist is one of the few heroes to holds her gun in the left hand, as Oathkeeper is in her right arm
Oathkeeper edit Oathkeeper has been bound to Lady Geist's arm for the past 50 years.
As mentioned in the biography, Oathkeeper wants to kill Lady Geist for binding him as it was "against the spirit of the deal".[49] However, Oathkeeper does like Lady Geist's apathy and considers her "one of his favorites".[50]
Aside from keeping Oathkeeper under control, the ward also prevents Oathkeeper from interacting with the world outside his prison. Lady Geist can choose when she wants Oathkeeper to see or listen to the outside world.[51] Only Lady Geist can hear Oathkeeper speak, with the main exception of Graves.[52]
Johann Geist Jr. edit Doctor Johann Geist Jr. is Lady Geist's grandson. Like his father before him, Johann Jr. repairs and maintains the ward Lady Geist uses to contain Oathkeeper.[9]
Johann Jr. and Lady Geist have gotten into arguments about Oathkeeper in the past, as Johann compares Oathkeeper to a "cancer".[53]
Lady Geist refers to Johann as "one of the best doctors in New York,"[54] although she also thinks he can be sanctimonious.[55]
Johann Jr. calls Lady Geist "Oma",[56] which is German for "granny".
The relationship between Lady Geist and Johann Jr. can vary depending on the pathway in The Binding of Oathkeeper. In storyline G, she sacrifices Johann to the Patrons in order to make Oathkeeper remain obedient to her. However, in storyline H, she chooses to sacrifice herself instead of Johann to banish Oathkeeper from Earth.
Infernus and Hank edit As someone who frequents Jezebel's, Lady Geist is friends with Infernus and Hank.[9]
Lady Geist refers to Infernus as "Fern" and "her bartender".[57][58] She likes Infernus' recipe of gin and tonic.[59]
As Jezebel's is under threat of closure, Lady Geist offers to help Infernus save the bar.[60] In one pathway in The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist gives Oathkeeper to Hank on the promise of providing the resources needed to keep the bar open.[61]
Kelvin edit Kelvin's Arctic expedition was funded by Lady Geist.[62][63] Lady Geist takes great offense if Kelvin is on the enemy team.[64][65]
Maximilian Fairfax edit Lady Geist has worked with Fairfax in the past, being invited to several of his parties.[17][66] Fairfax once showed off McGinnis to Lady Geist.[67] Both Fairfax and Lady Geist are familiar enough to refer to each other by their first names.[68]
Lady Geist considers Maximilian trustworthy enough to transfer Oathkeeper to. In one pathway in The Binding of Oathkeeper, Lady Geist gives Oathkeeper to Fairfax on the grounds that she'll be kept safe.
- #42Jacob Lash
Keys: Jacob Lash, The Lash
Jacob Lash is an asshole.
Lash's motivation in the ritual seems to be to prove his greatness to the world.[1][2] He knows exactly what he wants from the Patrons,[3] but never says exactly what it is.
Biography edit Lash is a champion of the Bear Pit, an underground fight club where spectators gamble on matches.[4][5] It's implied Lash often wins his fights, even in matches where he's supposed to lose,[6] and has only one known loss on his record (being to Bebop).[7][8]
Lash is referred to by others as a "stevedore" (dockworker).[9][10][11] He also has anchor tattoos on his shoulders, and his Death Slam ability has ship horn sound effects.
Lash donates 3% of his earnings to his charity called "Lash-Back", dedicated to children "that kind of suck".[12]
Lash is well-known in New York. The New York Oracle released a seasonal headline reminding readers "not to be like Jacob Lash".[13]
Personality edit Lash is extremely arrogant and vain. He refers to himself in third person as "The Lash".[14][15] He also calls himself "The God of Combat" and "God's gift to Combat".[16][17] Most characters can't stand Lash's ego,[18][19][20] although they sometimes can't deny that Lash is talented.[21]
Lash frequently antagonises his allies, calling them nicknames and often refusing to use their actual name.[22][23] He often flirts with women on his team, who generally shut down or ignore his advances.[24] Lash knows that people hate him, but in his eyes that just means they envy him because they're mediocre.[25][26]
Lash admits that he riles people up on purpose,[27][28] and doesn't deny that he's delusional and arrogant.[29][30] While losing in the ritual, Lash may begin to doubt himself and believe that "maybe he is all talk".[31][32]
Despite being a champion of the Bear Pit, Lash doesn't enjoy hurting people, but rather likes proving that he's better than people.[33] He seemingly doesn't want anyone dead and believes himself to be a "humanitarian through-and-through".[34][35] Lash has a rule against punching old people.[36] Lash never went to college and respects those who did.[37][38]
Appearance edit Lash is a burly white man with well-defined muscular limbs and chest. He has a large chin, thick curved brunette moustache, short hair with a front curl and shaved on the sides, small black eyes that are usually almost closed, and sparkles around his head. He wears a blue tank top, dirty dark jeans pants with suspenders and holes in the knees, brown shoes, and a brown leather belt. He carries a large grapple device with ropes in his back, sausages, an open can of green beans, more ropes, and a seemingly blood-soaked red handkerchief. He has anchor tattoos in both his shoulders and smaller tattoos in his back. He wears a pair of golden earrings, a small golden pendant in his neck, and bandages and golden brass knuckles with the name "LASH" in his left hand. His weapon is a large boxing glove-shaped gun he wears in his right arm, possibly based on the Sedgley OSS .38 pistol.
Information edit Lash likes to drink mimosas,[39] a cocktail made with chilled sparkling wine and orange juice. He has an open tab at Jezebel's.[40]
Instead of a traditional dockworker, Lash may be an airship worker, as airships are the primary means of air transport in the Deadlock universe.[41] This could be supported by Lash's in-game kit being focused on air mobility. The anchor tattoo in Lash's previous model was surrounded by wind shapes.[42]
In 2024's seasonal update, there was a list for all the playable characters checking if they were naughty or nice. Lash was the only character who was naughty.
Bebop edit Both champions of the Bear Pit, Lash and Bebop have a rivalry fueled by hate for each other.[43][44][45]
Lash used to use an uppercut instead of Ground Strike, but refused to use it ever again after seeing Bebop use an uppercut.[46][47] Bebop has beaten Lash in the Bear Pit once,[7] and Lash has beaten Bebop at least once afterwards.[48][49] Neither Bebop nor Lash elaborate on why they hate the other so much.[50][51]
Lash has at least 87 reasons why he's better than Bebop.[52]
Lash mocks Wraith for betting on Bebop in the Bear Pit,[53] and Wraith teases Lash because he lost to Bebop "one time".[7]
Vyper edit Vyper loves Lash and is obsessed with him.[54][55][56] She has watched him sleep (without his knowledge)[57] and sends Lash letters made to "stand out" (the contents of the letters are unknown, but they do make Lash uncomfortable).[58][59] When Vyper flirts with BillyBilly, she asks if she can call him "Lash".[60]
Lash is scared of Vyper's obsession with him and wants her to leave him alone.[61][62][63]
Mendoza edit The leader of the dismantled Mendoza Syndicate, Mendoza once told Wraith to bet money on Lash throwing a pit fight, which Lash proceeded to win.[6]
The only person Mendoza hates more than Lash is Ivy.[64]
In Ivy's Visual Novel, Mendoza sent some goons to beat up Lash.
- #43Maggie McGinnis
Keys: Maggie, McGinnis, Margaret "Maggie" McGinnis
Maggie McGinnis always had a knack for building things. At 4 she was using Lincoln Logs to recreate architectural marvels. At 10 she built and rewired a custom light fixture for her parents' anniversary. At 15 she designed a machine that refined the souls of the dead...that last one got a little more attention than the Lincoln Logs.
Now the head of Fairfax Industries Military R&D department, McGinnis spends her time in the machine shop, not in a lab. She's not interested in theory, to her science is magic you can touch.
McGinnis' wish is unknown, although it's implied that she's using the ritual as a chance to test some weaponry.[1][2]
Biography edit A child genius with a knack for building things, the brilliance of Margaret "Maggie" McGinnis[3] was picked up by Maximilian Fairfax after she designed a machine that refined the souls of the dead at the age of 15.[4][5] Famously known as a "kid genius",[6][7] McGinnis was shown off to the New York elite after Fairfax first discovered her.[8]
Now, as the head engineer of Fairfax Industries Military R&D department, McGinnis brainstorms the occult war machines.[9][10] While it's unknown where McGinnis' inventions have been used, it's said that she may be resposible for millions of deaths.[11][12] McGinnis also implies that she's killed people with her bare hands before.[13]
While McGinnis doesn't love working for Fairfax Industries, she's content with being a "wage slave" since she gets paid a fortune.[14][15] McGinnis was worried that she would lose her job when Fairfax lost the sovereignty of the Island of Cadenza to the US Government.[16][17] McGinnis has a mortgage to pay for.[18]
In The Binding of Oathkeeper, McGinnis creates a new ward for Lady Geist to contain Oathkeeper with. McGinnis helps Lady Geist due to the chance to "harness the power of a God".[19]
Personality edit As a "notorious misanthrope", McGinnis doesn't really care about the deaths she's caused or the sins of Fairfax Industries.[20][21][18] McGinnis thinks ethics are for scientists "that can't think big enough".[22] She does, however, appreciate the good Ivy did for New York.[23]
McGinnis dislikes the corporate side of her job, fancy events, and being treated too formally.[24][8][25] She agrees with Holliday that rich people are "assholes with god complexes".[26] McGinnis believes working is "good for the soul",[27] and that she'll work for Fairfax until she either gets bored or "opens a portal to hell and die".[28]
McGinnis doesn't think she'd be a good teacher, because her talent comes to her "naturally".[29]
McGinnis appreciates good craftsmanship, such as Ms. Shelly's work on BebopBebop.[30] She likes to find new challenges to work on.[19][31][32]
It's implied that McGinnis isn't above stealing other people's inventions.[33][34]
McGinnis likes to drink beer.[35]
Appearance edit
McGinnis wearing a dress in The Binding of Oathkeeper McGinnis is a young burly white woman with brown eyes, freckles in her cheeks, and messy short black hair held upwards by a red headband. She wears a blue shirt with sleeves rolled up, jeans overalls with a "Fairfax" logo in the chest, a yellow apron with a brown belt, yellow mechanic gloves, red socks, and dark brown shoes. She carries a bag and a hammer on her sides, and a cylindrical soul-powered machinery in her back that she uses for Heavy Barrage. Her weapon is a minigun.
Her Mini Turrets and Medicinal Specter are yellow machinery powered by green soul fuel,[36][37] and her Spectral Wall is made of solidified souls.
In The Binding of Oathkeeper, McGinnis is depicted with a mermaid tattoo on her left shoulder.
Information edit McGinnis is aware and makes it known that Spectral Wall usually backfires on her team.
Maximilian Fairfax edit Maximilian Fairfax handpicked McGinnis for Fairfax Industries after she designed a machine that refined the souls of the dead at 15 years old.[4][5] McGinnis was "paraded around incessantly" by Fairfax to New York's elite after he hired her.[8]
McGinnis finds "assholes with god complexes" to be a pretty close description of Fairfax.[26] That said, McGinnis doesn't really care about Fairfax's ethics since she's getting paid by him.[18] She refers to Fairfax as "Papa Fairfax" in a killstreak line.
- #44Mina Ha
Keys: Mina, Mina Ha
Mina Ha had it all...rich parents, elite education, and an arranged marriage that would see her ascend from run-of-the-mill upper class to American royalty. She was happy.
Then her betrothed was assassinated.
Mina wept; not for the life of her fiancé, but for the future that was stolen from her. Why couldn’t the killer just wait until after the wedding? Then she’d have the last name she always dreamed of and no one would even have to pretend to love anyone. It could have been perfect, but life wasn’t fair...and so Mina did what she always does when things don’t go her way: she told her parents to fix it.
Mr. And Mrs. Ha knew that the only way to appease their daughter was to offer her something greater than what she lost... and marrying into one of the world’s most lauded families was a tall order to top. They had to think big. They had to think outside of the box. They had to promise their daughter immortality.
It took a small fortune, but eventually they found a vampire who was willing to turn her. Unsurprisingly, Mina thought the idea of eternal youth and a trust fund was an acceptable plan B and happily agreed to the proposal. Now a fledgling vampire, Mina is quickly discovering that the clout she held as a human has no weight in vampire high society...and while at first that annoyed her, if there is one thing Mina has a knack for, it's learning the rules so she can subvert them. She will be the Viscount of New York, the other vampires just don't know it yet.
Mina's motivation in the ritual is to become Viscount of New York.[1]
Biography edit The daughter of a "new money" couple,[2] Mina Ha was educated at Blackmore Academy.[3] Over 5 years before the ritual, Mina's parents arranged a marriage for her with Arin Fairfax,[4][5][6] the eldest heir of Fairfax Industries,[7] which would have elevated Mina to American royalty. Unfortunately, Arin was attacked and presumed killed by Calico , which destroyed the Ha family's plans.
Frustrated, Mina asked her parents to "fix it". They promised her immortality and, for a small fortune, managed to find a vampire willing to turn her into one. After her transformation (which she considers "botched" by her parents),[8] Mina discovered that she was now at the bottom of the vampiric social ladder,[9] which inspired her new goal of becoming Viscount of New York, taking over from Viscount Simon.[10] The other vampires don't know that Mina is summoning the Patrons to become Viscount, and they likely wouldn't approve of it.[11]
Outside of her vampiric work, Mina is a fashion designer and knows how to sew.[12][13][14] She owns a clothing brand and is currently building up a "fashion empire".[15]
Mina is implied to be close to Pocket's age, who is 23 years old.[7]
Personality edit Mina is judgemental and holds high standards for herself and others,[8][16][17] respecting those whom she finds powerful and stylish.[18][19] In general, Mina is often antagonistic to other characters and has a reputation for being unpleasant.[20][21] Mina views her allies as "the help",[22] and doesn't show any sympathy towards even the most tragic characters.[23][24][25] She also dislikes altruistic people.[26][27] The other heroes refer to Mina as a "spoiled brat".[28][29][30]
Mina believes that becoming Viscount is her destiny,[31] and wants to prove her worth to the other vampires.[9][32] She's willing to "suck up" to those in power to achieve her goals.[33]
Mina loves the bats she uses in Nox Nostra, referring to them as "darlings".[34][35] She likes to use Sanguine Retreat to be annoying.[36]
Appearance edit Mina is a slim, young East Asian woman (based on her facial features and "Ha" last name) with pale white skin. She has red eyes and blue-black hair that fades to red in a bob cut. She wears a short black dress with a collar and a red pendant, a black and blue jacket shaped like an umbrella or a vampire squid with red underside, red gloves, and black thigh-high boots and stockings. She carries a black umbrella with a spike at the top and red underside, and a red purse with a red bat pendant. Her weapon is a pistol similar to German Walther PP with a wing accent lebeled "Nuit Rouge 7" ("Red Night 7" in French), with a magazine shaped like a red perfume bottle.
Mina holds her pistol in her left hand, like Lady Geist. While this is done for gameplay purposes so her umbrella doesn't cover her model, it could also reflect her admiration for Geist.
Information edit Mina's ultimate Nox Nostra means "Our Night" in Latin.
Mina's parents edit Mina's parents spoiled Mina rotten.[37][38] According to Mina, they "botched" her turning into a vampire.[8]
Mina believes that her mother would tell her that she's "lowering herself" to the enemy team's level.[39]
Pocket edit Mina was betrothed to Pocket due to an arranged marriage.[4][5][6] Mina hates Pocket for "ruining her life", as Pocket's assassination meant Mina couldn't become a Fairfax.[40][41]
It's implied that Mina and Pocket never loved each other, as she cared more about getting the Fairfax last name.[42] However, Mina claims that she did have feelings for Pocket.[43]
Pocket holds some amount of disdain for Mina,[44][45] but does feel remorse for what happened.[46]
Lady Geist edit Mina idolises Lady Geist,[18][47] who believes Mina has "potential".[48] Mina wants to dress Geist for the Met Gala.[49]
Infernus edit Mina got carded at Jezebel's by Infernus on her 16th birthday and attempted to bribe him to let her stay.[50] Infernus denied the bribe as he didn't want to risk Jezebel's getting shut down.[51]
Even though at least 5 years have passed,[7] Mina still resents Infernus.[52][53]
Infernus hopes that Mina will mellow out as she gets older,[54] and believes that there's no point in talking sense to Mina now as "she wouldn't listen anyways".
- #45Mirage
Keys: Mirage, Nashala
The Djinn are one of the more curious groups of people in the modern world. Possessing great power in controlled doses, Djinn are incapable of maintaining corporeal form for longer than 48 minutes without resting within a vessel. As a result, most Djinn employ human bodyguards for transport, protection, and companionship.
Mirage is one such bodyguard. Employed by Djinn ambassador Nashala Dion, Mirage is in New York on a diplomatic mission. It's the hope of the Djinn that they can negotiate with the US government for a sale of part of Wyoming so that they can build a sovereign nation for their people.
Mirage's wish (which is moreso Nashala's wish) is to help Nashala buy a piece of Wyoming to turn into a home for the Djinn.[1][2][3]
Biography edit Mirage has worked for Nashala for a few years after she approached him with a job offer.[4]
Mirage believes the US Government will be willing to negotiate Wyoming because the Djinn can offer them money and power.[5] The Djinn found that Wyoming was "the most sensible place" for their new home.[6]
Mirage and Nashala have arrived in New York shortly before the ritual,[7] and they are guests at the Baroness Hotel.[8][9] They haven't had the chance to do much sightseeing, but are looking forward to seeing various locales.[10][11] They have visited New York's Public Library,[11] and intend to visit New Jersey and Columbia University.[12][13] Mirage also wants to try eating a hot-dog for the first time.[14]
Nashala Dion edit Mirage is very loyal to Nashala and the Djinn's plight.[19][26] Their relationship is strictly professional.[27]
While Mirage enjoys Nashala's company, he can find her frustrating to work with when she makes "impulsive, short-sighted" decisions (such as asking him to trust Seven).[22]
While working for Nashala, Mirage has visited "fantastic locales" with her, although talking about these locations publically would be a major break of Nashala's trust.[28]
Mirage fights with Nashala by his side since he believes that's the safest place for her.[29]
Anyone who wants to talk to Nashala must have Mirage's approval,[30] and anyone trying to steal or harm Nashala will be killed by Mirage.[31][32]
Mirage believes that Nashala doesn't need a wish to pull off the deal for Wyoming.[33]
The Doorman edit Mirage and the Doorman are familiar with each other from the Baroness Hotel. When on enemy teams, the Doorman feels sorry for killing Mirage,[34][35] and Mirage is upset for having to leave the Baroness.[9]
Paradox edit The Paradox Organisation are a sworn enemy of the Djinn (and by extension Mirage), and the Djinn want to dismantle them.[36][37]
Paradox keeps trying to steal Nashala for the Paradox Museum.[38][39][40]
HazeHaze edit Haze and Mirage respect each other's discipline.[41][42] However, she criticizes him for wanting to use the Patron's wish to get Wyoming, instead of negotiating through official channels.[43][44]
Mirage wonders if Haze is in the ritual by her own will or under the OSIC's orders.
- #46Mo & Krill
Keys: Krill, Mo
Mo and Krill are members of The Tunnel Rats, a group that help facilitate illicit trade and commerce between the boroughs thanks to a network of underground tunnels. But while most denizens of the New York underworld respect the work The Rats do, every once in a while a gang tries to exploit the tunnel system for personal vendettas...that's when Mo and Krill step in and remind the city what happens to those who disrespect their hospitality.
Mo & Krill's motivation in the ritual is to achieve the respect and glory they believe is owed to them.[1][2] Their secondary motivation appears to be to help Pocket complete the ritual.
Biography edit Mo & Krill have been forced to live in the margins of society.[3] It's unknown how the two met, but Krill mentions that their friendship was forged from "respect and certain death".[4] They live in a hovel.[5]
Mo is a mole man.[6][7] His full name is Maurice,[8] although Krill and Pocket also call him "Momo".[9][10] Mo is learning pottery and wants to audit pottery classes at Columbia College,[11][12] although it's implied that he doesn't know to use a pottery wheel.[13] Mo stinks.[14][15]
Krill's species is unknown, although he does have fur.[16] Krill himself is an author and is writing a memoir about his and Mo's adventures, which currently has 31 chapters.[17][11] Krill has bathed in sewer sludge.[18] Krill is also the one who casts Scorn in-game,[19] and he immobilizes enemies with his gun during Combo.[20]
Not much is known about The Tunnel Rats group. Some characters call Mo and Krill the Tunnel Rats themselves.[21][22] As members of The Tunnel Rats, Mo and Krill have smuggled a wide variety of objects in the New York tunnels, such as jewels, fine art and Ixian trinkets.[23] They also offer information for a "reasonable price",[24] and accept money to dig new underground tunnels.[25] Notable items of value they've sold include trinkets from Kelvin's Ixia expedition and knock-offs of Mina's dresses.[26][27] Krill knows someone looking to sell a first edition copy of "Don Quixote".[28]
Mo & Krill don't pay taxes.[29] As criminals, they're implied to be wanted by the law.[30]
Personality edit Krill is polite and quick-witted. He treats people with respect and is often quick to propose deals to his allies in case they need something or are willing to sell something.[28][31][32] Krill doesn't get shook when threatened by people like Yamato,[33] and is quick to defend himself and Mo if they get disrespected.[34][35] Despite being nice to people, Krill still values money and is willing to do business with horrible people like Mendoza to get it.[36][5] He isn't above taking unfair advantages in fights (such as using Sand Blast), seeing it as necessary for survival.[37][38]
Mo is silent. According to Krill, Mo knows how to speak, but doesn't speak around people he's unfamiliar with.[39][40]
Mo & Krill value their independence.[33] They have many connections in the criminal underground of New York, and maintain relationships with people like Wraith.[41][42] Most enemy heroes like Mo & Krill and are apologetic when fighting them.[43]
Mo & Krill don't like the Friends of Humanity.[44] They also don't like it when their names get mixed up.[45] Krill has visited the Baroness Hotel before and believes they have the best mimosas in Manhattan.[46]
Appearance edit Mo & Krill's models are mostly inherited from Neon Prime, minus Mo's clothes. Krill's clothes seem to have been mostly unchanged.
Mo is a giant white mole creature. He wears a dirty white tank top, fingerless gloves, and violet dungarees, which he chooses to tie around his waist instead of wearing properly. Mo has a large metal chain around his neck and wears a baker boy cap on his head, which obscures his eyes. He also has a bag attached to his dungaree on his back, which has a shovel tied to it.
Krill is a small bipedal creature with human-like hair, and rides on Mo's back. Krill's face resembles a gibbon. He wears a violet jumpsuit and small boots, as well as a bulletproof vest and a bandolier.
Pocket edit Mo & Krill protected Pocket after Pocket's assassination attempt, and they regard each other as family.[47][48][49] They love each other.[50]
Wraith edit Mo & Krill are in Wraith's weekly poker game and owe money to her.[51] If they're on the same team, Wraith may say she called a favor to have them fighting on her side.[42] They regard each other as friends.[41][52]
Infernus edit Infernus is friends with Mo & Krill.[53]
Mo & Krill are regular patrons at Jezebel's, and offer to help Infernus prevent Jezebel's from closing.[54]
Abrams edit Mo & Krill are friends with Abrams, and play at Wraith's weekly poker games together.[55] Abrams has worked with Mo & Krill in the past.[56]
Abrams owes Mo & Krill $50 from their last card game together.[51]
Celeste edit Celeste is close friends with Mo & Krill.[57]
While on opposing teams, Celeste says people like her and Mo were supposed to stick together.[58] Additionally, Mo wants to cry if he kills Celeste.[59]
Krill tells Celeste that she doesn't need to spend her life hiding in a circus, likely meaning that they knew she was secretly a unicorn before the ritual.[60]
Bebop edit Mo & Krill watch and bet on Bebop's fights in the Bear Pit.[61] They know Ms. Shelly and have tried to help her.[62]
Silver edit Mo & Krill have worked with Silver in the past and have a good working relationship with her.[63]
While on the other team, Krill expresses concern over "how desperate" Silver had gotten and wishes they could've helped her.[64]
Mendoza edit Mendoza was a "good" client of Mo & Krill before Ivy ran him out of town.[36]
Paige edit Paige likes Mo & Krill and wants to be their friend.[65] Krill mentions that they once planned to start a book club together.[66]
Vyper edit Vyper really likes Mo & Krill.[67] They don't like her.
- #47Paige
Keys: Paige
The daughter of a rare book dealer, Paige grew up in a loving home that prioritized kindness, magic, and storytelling. But while Paige took naturally to her parents' values, her little brother Bryce did not.
A rebellious teen, Bryce resented not only his family’s saccharine attitude, but also their refusal to let him dabble in magics that they deemed too dangerous. Paige tried everything she could think of to keep him out of trouble, but like most teenagers, the more his big sister tried to tell him what was best for him, the more he turned away.
Paige doesn't know what Bryce did to get kicked out of the house...just that she came home from the library to find her brother gone and her parents crying.
Days turned to weeks, to months, to years. Paige grew to become a talented bibliomancer, making a living as a storyteller reading at libraries across the five boroughs; and while her parents have remained silent about what happened with Bryce, Paige's obsession with finding him has only grown. She will discover what happened to her brother... and no man or god is going to stand in her way.
Paige's motivation in the ritual is to find and save her brother, Bryce.[1][2] She hopes that doing so will heal her family.[3][4]
Biography edit Paige went to high school and college when growing up.[5] In high school, she had a diary where she wrote about Byronic heroes.[6]
Paige loves reading all kinds of books, having set times of day for different types of books.[7] She has read books on Kelvin's adventures and the Baxter Society.[8][9]
As a storyteller, Paige reads books to kindergarteners.[10][11] She loved showing off Bookwyrm at the libraries, but was forced to stop using it after the dragon burnt some books.[12][13]
Outside of storytelling, Paige also helps her parents at their bookstore.[14] She also goes to a book club.[15]
Personality edit Paige is chipper and optimistic. She tries to be kind and dislikes hurting others.[16][17][18] Her love for reading is reflected in her comparisons between other heroes and fictional characters.[19][20] The enemy heroes often think Paige is in over her head, and are apologetic when killing her.[21]
Paige is nervous about the ritual due to her lack of combat experience, and attempted to tackle her nerves by doing Storytime at one of the libraries.[22][23] Despite her nerves, Paige is dedicated to completing the ritual to save her brother and heal her family.[4][24] Paige views herself as the hero and protagonist of her story.[25][26][27]
Paige finds heroic men romantic.[28][29] She admires the Knights of the Round Table and occasionally calls out the knights directly when they help her in Rallying Charge or when she gets a melee kill.[30][31][32]
Paige says "butterscotch" when she's frustrated.[33][34]
Appearance edit Paige is a young white woman with a soft face, green eyes framed by round red glasses, and messy ginger hair tied in a bun. She wears a short dark green plaid dress with suspenders, a light green turtleneck sweater and thigh-high socks, and brown shoes with short heels. She has a golden fountain pen pendant in her chest, and a golden badge with a book symbol in her right shoulder. She carries 5 large books, the top one being an Arthurian Fantasy book from which she summons green spectral creatures and giant swords. Literature References edit Paige makes several references to real-life literature and authors. These include:
Various references to Arthurian Legend.[35][36] A Midsummer Night's Dream, written by William Shakespeare and performed in 1595-1596.[35] Henry V, written by Shakespeare and performed in 1599-1600.[37] Othello, written by William Shakespeare and performed in 1601-1604.[38] Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen and published in 1813.[39][40] Wuthering Heights, written by Emily Brontë and published in 1847.[35][40][39] The Picture of Dorian Gray, written by Oscar Wilde and published in 1891.[41] Sherlock Holmes, specifically The Adventure of the Empty House, written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published in 1903.[42] The Wind in the Willows, written by Kenneth Grahame and published in 1908.[43] Hercule Poirot, a fictional detective from a series written by Agatha Christie.[44] Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck and published in 1937.[45] The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, written by C. S. Lewis and published in 1950.[46] Paige also references literary tropes and plot devices, calling Abrams' tome a "MacGuffin"[47] and saying she has "plot armor"[48] (which one of her abilities is also named after).
Bryce edit Bryce is Paige's younger brother who went missing years ago.
Paige describes her brother Bryce as a curmudgeon,[49] although she does still love Bryce.[3] Bryce once told Vyper that Paige is wound up tight.[50]
Venator believes Bryce is beyond saving, expressing remorse that Paige has "thrown away her life to save someone who doesn't deserve it".[51][52] Haze believes Paige would be happier if she lets her brother go.[53]
Paige's Parents edit Paige hopes that she'll make her parents proud.[54]
Paige's parents don't know that Paige is participating in the ritual. Paige didn't tell them as she believes they'd be worried sick.[55]
InfernusInfernus and the ShopkeeperShopkeeper are familiar with Paige's parents.[56][57]
Kelvin edit Paige idolises Kelvin and loves his stories.[58][59]
Ivy and Manny Arroyo edit Ivy knows Paige from Manny Arroyo's story time.[60] She likes Paige and wants to start a book club with her.[61][62] Paige thinks Ivy is great.[63][64]
Vyper edit Vyper nicknames Paige as "Red" and is apologetic when fighting her.[65][66] She also mistakes Paige for a performer at the "Pole Palace" named Cinnamon.[67] Paige doesn't like Vyper.[68]
Vyper has met Bryce and says he was "more fun".[69]
Krill edit Krill and Paige once planned to start a book club together.[70]
Mirage edit Paige has a crush on Mirage and says he "stepped out of every romance novel ever written".[71][72] She thinks Mirage is better than Shiv,[73] but Shiv is a better "bad boy" than Lash.[74]
Mirage thinks Paige is a kind soul,[75] and believes Nashala would find her amusing.[76]
Victor edit Paige has a crush on Victor and offers to help him with his problems.[77][78] Paige likens Victor to a "walking mystery novel" and wants to learn more about him.[79]
Paige doesn't want Victor to put on a shirt.
- #48Paradox
Keys: Paradox
Paradox. An artifact of time, and the name of a notorious thieves' guild... one that prides themselves on constructing elaborate heists that target the most untouchable of individuals and institutions. What does Paradox do with the countless artifacts, state secrets, and celebrity paternity tests that they have stolen? Put it on display at pop-up museums, so that they can show the world that no one is out of Paradox’s reach.
Shrouded in mystery, each member of Paradox dons a mask and takes on the organization's name. They are everywhere. They are nowhere. And if they want something, they are inevitable.
Paradox has a few motivations in the ritual: primarily, she seeks to prove herself to the Paradox Organization, but she also seems to relish in the prospective bragging rights.[1][2][3][4] It's implied that one of Paradox's goals in the ritual is to steal something from the opposing Patron (such as the Hidden KingHidden King's crown) and display it at the Paradox Museum.[5][6][3] It's also implied that Paradox wants to show that she's fit to lead the Paradox Organization by completing the ritual.[7] Her exact wish is unknown, but there are dozens of possibilities according to the Patrons.[8]
Biography edit Not much is known about Paradox herself. She's Scottish and a "bored rich person",[9][10] who gladly gave up her identity to join the Paradox Organization.[11] The helmet Paradox wears can be taken off (as it's just a mask),[12] but what Paradox does in her free time is unknown. She meets the other members of Paradox a few times a year to brag about her thefts.[10]
Paradox is nicknamed "The Time Thief".[13]
Paradox is currently trying to find a way to break into the Baxter Society's manor house,[14] the Baroness Hotel,[15] and McGinnis' lab.[16] Paradox was expecting Venator to come after her at some point, implying the Paradox Organization has robbed the Vatican before.[17] Paradox shows interest in joining the OSIC's Curator Division, although it's likely that she just wants to steal from them.[18]
Paradox claim to be in possession of the Tome of Anubis. Wraith says she thought the Tome was at the Met.[19] At some point, the Tome was reportedly seen in New York's black market.[20]
How the time manipulation Paradox uses works is a tightly held secret.[21] Paradox says time travel "isn't a thing yet".[22]
The Paradox Organization has a council.[23] It's implied by The Doorman that Paradox is afraid of being seen as a failure by the council.[24]
Personality edit Paradox enjoys stealing things and winning with style.[25][26][27] She likes to "have fun" with people who entertain her actions as a Paradox member,[28] or people who she enjoys messing with.[29][30] She is playful and jokey, but takes the name of the Paradox Organization very seriously. She drops the humor if Paradox is threatened or disrespected.[31][32][33]
Paradox is interested in stealing valuable things and learning secrets.[34][35] However, she doesn't care about American artifacts in particular.[9] She admires good craftsmanship.[36]
Other characters often call Paradox "clever".[37]
Appearance edit Paradox is a woman with broad shoulders and an hourglass figure. Her real appearance is unknown, since her uniform covers her entire body. She wears an oval helmet that seems to have a lava lamp-like liquid inside in the shape of an hourglass, with what looks like breathing holes in the bottom. The helmet is described as a "fishbowl head".[12][38]
She wears a white collar shirt with a wine red scarf, an hourglass-shaped beige overcoat with wine red underside, waist-high tight gray pants, a brown leather belt and leg straps, and thigh-high boots and long gloves that seem made of black latex. Her coat has hourglass-shaped pins. She carries a pocket watch in her coat and an hourglass-shaped machine on her back with a glowing blue material in glass that she draws her powers from. She has blue tubes connecting her coat to her gloves. Her weapon is a futuristic one-handed gun with an unorthodox rectangular shape.
Paradox wears a blue rose in her lapel, which do not exist in nature, and are only possible through genetic modification. In art, blue roses are a symbol for mystery and the unattainable. Billy makes a comment on the blue rose.
Lady Geist edit Lady Geist has an old grudge against Paradox.[40] The Paradox Organization has stolen one of her husband's paintings.[41][42] Paradox finds Lady Geist fun to mess with.[29]
Mirage edit The Paradox Organization are a sworn enemy of the Djinn (and by extension Mirage), and the Djinn want to dismantle them.[43][44] Paradox keeps trying to steal Nashala for the Paradox Museum.[45][46][47]
Kelvin edit Kelvin is one of Paradox's targets. She says that her colleagues may have already broken into his home before the ritual started.[48]
The Paradox Organization holds Kelvin in high regard, as they consider him "a thief who steals from the dead".[49] Paradox finds Kelvin fun to mess with.[30]
Seven edit Paradox is aware of Seven's safehouse in the tunnels and threatens to reveal its location.[50] Seven wants to commission Paradox for a job.[51]
Abrams edit Abrams has been investigating the Paradox Organization outside of his case with the Tome.[52]
Paradox threatens Abrams to stop asking questions about them
- #49Pocket
Keys: Pocket, Arin Fairfax
Arin Fairfax, the eldest heir to Fairfax Industries, has been living in hiding for the past 5 years after being shot and left for dead on their 18th birthday. Arin doesn't know who is trying to keep them from taking control of their parent's company... but in the avarice fueled viper's nest that is Fairfax Industries it could be anyone.
Taking on the name "Pocket", Arin desperately wants to keep their true identity a secret… not only for their own protection; but because they want to forge their own identity separate from their parents.
Pocket's motivation in the ritual is to stop their father, Maximilian Fairfax,[1][2] and to take control of Fairfax Industries.[3][4]
Biography Arin Fairfax was the eldest heir to Fairfax Industries, set to one day take over the organization. For some time leading up to their 18th birthday, Arin was attending Blackmore Academy[5] and was betrothed to Mina due to an arranged marriage.[6][7][8] It was also around this time Arin stole the Enchanter's Satchel from their father Maximilan,[9][10] trying to keep him from it.[11] The suitcase's exact origins are unknown, but Arin believes it was never meant to be a weapon.[12]
On their 18th birthday, someone hired Calico to assassinate Arin. Calico shot Arin and left them to die, but they ultimately survived since the bullet missed their heart, and possibly also thanks to the suitcase.[9][10] Calico may have also missed on purpose.[13] Arin believes that Maximilian was the one who hired Calico.[14]
After the assassination attempt, Arin was protected by Mo & Krill[15][16] and cut ties with all people from their past life, as they didn't know who could be trusted.[17] They took up a new name as "Pocket" and is now trying their best to hide their true identity, which proves difficult since the suitcase and designer jacket may attract unwanted attention.[18] They soon left New York for a while, before returning to participate in the ritual.[19][20]
Pocket is 23 years old at the time of the ritual.[21]
Pocket has a sister, whom McGinnis considers a "real bitch", like Pocket's mother.[22]
A statue of Walter Fairfax, presumably an ancestor of Pocket, can be found in the garden behind the Baroness Hotel. Walter is depicted as an old man with frogs crawling over his legs. The statue also appears in Pocket's background in the hero select screen.
Personality edit Pocket's years spent on the run have shaped them into a resilient person with strong ideals.[23][24] Pocket is not especially talkative,[25] and they typically push people away when they try to offer them support.[26][27][28] Others often describe them as "sad" and "angsty" as a result.[29][30][31] While they have a somewhat gruff exterior, they are more amicable and soft-spoken around those that they trust;[32] they also have a cheeky side to their otherwise serious personality.[33][34][35]
Pocket hates violence and is only in the ritual as a last resort.[36][37][38] They are horrified with themselves whenever they need to use Affliction,[39][40][41] trying to justify it as the spirits killing their enemies, not them.[42] A few characters notice that Pocket doesn't really want to be fighting in the ritual.[43][44][45]
Pocket wants to build a better world.[46] They hate those whom they perceive to be complicit with Fairfax's actions and making the world worse.[47][48] They also dislike being seen as a kid.[49]
Pocket refuses to take up their old family name until they're no longer ashamed of it.[50] That said, they still see themself as a Fairfax and as the rightful heir of Fairfax Industries.[51][52] Pocket worries that, by killing people in the ritual, they're turning more and more into someone they never wanted to be: their father.[53][54]
Pocket doesn't expect to win the ritual.[55]
Appearance edit Pocket is a slim, light-skinned person of presumably mixed Asian-White descent (based on their facial features and the appearance of their father Maximilian and ancestor Walter). They have brown eyes and short black hair with edges pointed upwards. They wear an expensive but ragged dark green jacket with 6 pockets, fingerless black gloves, an orange scarf with edges resembling skeleton hands, a white shirt with a large collar, orange vest, black necktie, brown pants and black shoes. Their inconspicuous magic suitcase contains many frogs, including a large one that attaches to the ziplines by its tongue. Their weapon is a Nock volley gun, though it behaves as a shotgun.
While Pocket's gender identity hasn't been directly stated, they are implied to be non-binary and are exclusively referred to by gender-neutral "they/them" pronouns, including by characters who knew their past identity and call Pocket by their given name "Arin", such as Dynamo and Mina, as well as the Patron's heralds to Mina.[56][57][58]
The only known instances in which Pocket is referred to by gendered terms are in The Binding of Oathkeeper, in which their father Maximilian Fairfax refers to Pocket as his "son"[59] (while the visual novel is partially outdated and may be rewritten, it is considered canon for the purposes of this wiki), the Shopkeeper calling Pocket a "good-lookin‘ son of a bitch",[60] and Mina's backstory indirectly referring to Pocket as her "fiancé".[61] Other voice lines referring to Pocket as "he/him" have been removed[62] and were confirmed as unintentional by developer Kaori.[63] (Notably, another character who deliberately hides her identity, Paradox, refers to herself as a woman and uses "she/her" pronouns.)[64]
Information edit Pocket's backstory and abilities have some similarities to the Biblical Plagues of Egypt: the death of the firstborn, the plague of frogs, and the pestilence ( Affliction).
Maximilian Fairfax and Pocket's mother edit Pocket believes their father, Maximilian Fairfax, was behind their attempted assassination.[14] Pocket wants to stop their father rather than kill him, although Pocket believes that Maximilian would rather Pocket try to kill him.[2]
Pocket dislikes their parents and is ashamed of their family's name.[65][50] While trapped in the Baroness Hotel, Pocket is taunted by The Doorman who tells them that they have no home and that their parents wanted them dead.[66][67] Pocket believes their father is "not a good man" and their mother "isn't worth saving".[68][69] Pocket also believes their mother wouldn't mourn them and thinks she'd get along with Yamato.[70][71]
Maximilian seems to know that Pocket survived, as in The Binding of Oathkeeper he asks Lady GeistLady Geist if she knows where Pocket is. Maximilian mentions that, like Lady Geist, he originally thought Pocket had died, and seems to consider their survival to be "tomorrow's problem".[59] In a seasonal New York Oracle headline, Maximilian donates "a small fortune" to New York orphanages, telling the press that "nobody should be without family on the holidays".[72]
Dynamo edit Dynamo is Pocket's godfather. He recognizes Pocket and says he would have helped them if he knew they were alive. Pocket didn't tell Dynamo that they survived because they weren't sure if they could trust him.[17][73]
Mo & Krill edit Mo & Krill protected Pocket after their assassination, and they regard each other as family[15][16][74] and love each other.[75]
It's implied that Calico may have asked Mo & Krill to help Pocket.[76]
Calico edit Calico was the assassin sent to kill Pocket 5 years before the events of the ritual. However, she implies that she let Pocket live on purpose.[13]
Calico enjoys "tying up loose ends" if she kills Pocket during the ritual.[77] She also mentions that Maximilian Fairfax will "have questions",[78] lining up with Pocket's belief that Maximilian Fairfax was the one who sent Calico to kill Pocket.
Pocket, naturally, dislikes Calico for almost killing them.[79][80]
Mina edit Mina was Pocket's fiancée in an arranged marriage. She hates Pocket for "ruining her life", as their assassination meant Mina couldn't become a Fairfax.[6][7][8]
It's implied that Mina and Pocket never loved each other, as she cared more about getting the Fairfax last name.[81] However, Mina claims that she did have feelings for Pocket.[82]
Pocket holds some amount of disdain for Mina,[83][84] but does feel remorse for what happened.
- #50Rat King
Keys: Rat King
The cryptid ruler of the New York Warrens, The Rat King towers over his subjects in size, strength, and ambition. No longer content with hiding underground, the king has revealed his bold vision for a future where he and his subjects can walk the surface without fear of the pest control vans that roam the streets of New York (or as the rats call them: human death squads)
Step 1: Take control of Long Island Step 2: Declare Long Island as the new sovereign nation of Ratannia Step 3: Execute every human that refuses to leave this new rat utopia
But air tight as this plan is, the king of rats didn't want to take chances: and so he’s decided to the summon the patron to help hedge his bets.
Biography edit The Rat King's real name is Louis.[1] The Rat King has three million subjects,[2] though he only brought a hundred of his closest friends to the ritual.[3] The New York Oracle states that attempts to solve New York's rat problems using magic backfired and only made them stronger.[4]
Personality edit Rat King consistently calls people "crumbums".[5][6]
Rat King loathes humans.
Rat King considers his own rats to be idiots,[7] but still cares deeply for them. He takes his position as their king very seriously.[8][9]
Appearance edit Rat King is a tall, hunched over gray and white anthropomorphic rat, with yellow eyes and red pupils, and a large nose, front teeth and ears. He has various scars over his body. He wears only a ragged cape made of roughly sewn stained red fabric, an improvised crown of rusty metal, bracelets and a collar made of scrap, and rings made of bottle caps. When using Royal Pestments, he wears an armor made of signs and scrap metal over his back and face, which falls apart as he takes damage. His weapon is a pipe rifle made of scrap, such as a boot for the stock and a tin can for the barrel, using nails and different ammo types as bullets, and which is reloaded by his rats. In his render, he sits on a throne made of sewer pipes. The flag of Ratannia seems to be based on the flag of Ohio, but with a rat face instead of a blue triangle.
Information edit Due to not yet having sovereignty, the US government does not recognize Ratannia as a nation.[10]
The Rat King names each one of his many followers when using his Rat Swarm ability. The list of names mentioned is as follows:
Abbi with an I, Abby with a Y, Achilles, Ajax, Ares, Arizona, Ash, Aspen, Auggie, Big Sal, Bitin' Mike, Blaine, Bobby, Bobby Detroit, Boone, Bruce, Calhoun, Caliope, Carl, 2nd Carl, Carlito, Cash, Cathy with a C, Charlotte, Cheeky, Chester, Chubs, Chuck, Cumin, Cupcake, Dane, Dante, Dax, Denise, Dillion, Donna, Donovan, Dutch, Eddie, Eli, Erika, Fat Face, Frankie, Freddie, Gene, George, Gomez, Gumdrop, Hector, Helen, Hera, Ingrid, Jackie, Jacques, Jake, Jamenez, Jane, Jasmine, Jasper, Jessie, Jimmy, Jimmy T, Junior, Kathy with a K, Kelly, Kingston, Knick-Knack, Kulas, Levi, Lexington, Lilia, Little Sal, Liv, Lou, Louise, Mango, Marcus, Margot, Matt, Miguel, Mildred, Mocha, Monty, Nacho, Nick, Nutmeg, Odie, Oregano, Palomo, Paul, Peanut, Phoebe, Phillip, Polka Dot, Potato, Prosecco, Pumpkin, Rabies Ronnie, Rainbow, Regianno, Reginald, Reno, Rodrigo, Rokko, Sam, Sanchez, Sarah, Snub Nose Molly, Soda-Pop, Stabbin' Mike, Stuart, Switchblade Mac, TJ, Tomaso, Two-shoe Greg, Valerie, Vince, Vino, Wally, Widget, and Zero;

Mo & Krill edit Rat King has a rivalry with Mo & Krill. He says they had their chance to work for him and "accept him as their king".[11][12][13]
Seven edit Rat King and Seven have made a deal with each other. While the terms of the deal are unknown, it's likely that Rat King allowed Seven to hide in the sewers.
