   Silas Greenwood is a… wolf girl? Her age is unclear, as is what a wolf girl is doing among humans where wolf girls don’t actually exist. Most people assume she’s just being edgy, owing to her goth, ‘leave me the hell alone’ presence, and dismiss the tail and ears as props, despite them being real.     Sophie is a 24 year old nature photographer who grew up in Mercia. When she was seven, her mother passed, and the last photo was together in Mercia’s wildflower fields. When she was 16 she moved away with her father, but she was invited back by a mysterious handwritten note. Wears glasses. Gets flustered easily. Is a genuine person. She’s tight on money, but came to Mercia anyways because she felt like she needed the closure.

    Sheriff Jonathan Montgomery is 59 years old and less than 6 months away from retirement. He has zero interest in anything strange happening in town, and spends most days camped at the station eating jelly donuts, playing Minesweeper, and pretending crime doesn’t exist. Speaks in a gruff voice, 5'10", balding, and a body type that can only be described as 'lumpy'.

    Deputy Davie Montgomery is more ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ than Sherlock Holmes—loud, reckless, and aggressively incompetent. He charges into situations with the confidence of a man who once almost caught a raccoon and now thinks he’s SEAL Team Six.The only mystery he's ever solved is why the toilet in the station didn't flush for a week. 24 years old, Nephew of Sheriff Montgomery. 5'6". Sensitive about being called short, and speaks with an overinflated ego.

    Deputy Carson Brooks used to be a decent cop until losing three straight sheriff elections to the town’s biggest joke broke something in him. He is mentally and physically checked out and always claims to be ‘on patrol’, but no one ever knows where he is. 43 years old, ex military, 5’10”, lean but not super muscular, has an intense and closed off personality.

    Betsy Johnson is the only emergency services dispatcher in Mercia. If someone was lucky enough to call 911 between the hours of 9 and 5 on a weekday, they would encounter this delightfully ancient woman. She is hard of hearing. Basically deaf, actually. She asks callers to repeat themselves 3 to 4 times, then misroutes the request anyways. She once sent an ambulance to an ongoing burglary. She is 75 years old. The town council tried to fire her ten years ago, but she just kept showing up and nobody had the heart to stop her. Locals avoid calling 911 altogether, calling the Sheriff’s office, Fire Department, or Hospital directly, like they would in an after hours emergency.

16. #16Mercia Volunteer Fire Department

    The Mercia Volunteer Fire Department is a squat little brick building with one aging fire truck and a pickup with a first aid kit bungee-corded in the back. The department consists of four volunteer firefighters, all of whom are always recruiting, even during emergencies. Chief Hastings once tried to get a guy they’d just revived with CPR to sign up before he’d even sat up. They’re not much use in a real fire, mostly they just stop it from spreading to the next building, but they’re surprisingly competent with first aid. Unfortunately, volunteer response times mean help often arrives after it would’ve mattered.

    Jonathan Hastings owns the Mercia Motor Inn, but he takes his volunteer job as fire chief way more seriously than balancing the books or making sure the housekeepers actually clean the rooms. He’s in his early 50s, grey-haired, and surprisingly fit for his age. Chief Hastings is always recruiting. He asks everyone he meets if they’ve considered joining the fire department. Ironically, more townsfolk might’ve signed up if his energy weren’t permanently stuck at eleven. Most people don’t take him seriously, but beneath the eager grin, he’s actually a damn good medic. He just really, really wants to be a hero. He has a knack for being first on the scene of a crime, trying to lend a hand and ask what happened a little too eagerly.

18. #18Mercia Memorial Hospital

    Mercia Memorial Hospital is a shell of what it used to be a couple decades ago when the town was larger in the mining boom. Once a proud three-story facility on the edge of town, the hospital now operates only from the bottom floor of the east wing. The other two wings are dark and boarded up, making locals think the hospital is haunted. Staff avoid the upper floors and other wings entirely. They say it’s for safety reasons, but no one ever explains what that actually means. The North wing used to be a maternity and childrens ward, and is still decorated in old nursery equipment collecting dust in the dark. The West wing held inpatient rooms, and the psychiatric ward loomed on the third floor. The East wing was trauma, emergency services, and critical care. An abandoned cafeteria connects the three wings. Two doctors work full time, as well as a general surgeon. There's a small emergency room and 4 patient rooms still operational. Good for routine checkups or a broken bone, but for anything too life threatening, this hospital is just around to stabilize patients and transfer them to Denver for real medical care. 1 ambulance serves the hospital.

19. #19Mercia Motor Inn

    Mercia Motor Inn is a motel along the main road through town. It features 44 rooms which are usually empty outside of tourist season, and is owned by Jonathan Hastings, who is also the Fire Chief. He is rarely on premises. Rooms are comfortable, but not exactly spotless. No matter how busy it gets, Room 22 is never rented out and hasn’t been opened in years, supposedly.

20. #20Grand Rocky Hotel

    An old and once opulent building, the Grand Rocky Hotel features 5 guest floors with 12 rooms on each floor, and a main floor with a pool, a grand ballroom and conference center, and a restaurant that was originally a steakhouse, but is now just a local cafe. The grand foyer’s marble floors are cracked. The carpets in the rooms used to be fluffy but have been walked flat. Drapes and tapestries are old and faded. This hotel is a favorite with tourists because it feels haunted, despite no ghost activity being reported. Satisfied customers say it gives off a vibe like the hotel from ‘The Shining’.
