   Sudden Shrinking Syndrome is an untreatable disease that reduces the height and mass of those afflicted. Known colloquially as SSS, 'the shrinks,' or 'downtime.' Those afflicted by SSS are colloquially known as shrinkies. Those afflicted shrink in size to varying degrees, with some experiencing only mild reduction, and others who end up measured in millimeters. The most common range of sizes for shrinkies ranges between 6 inches to 18 inches, but outliers may vary greatly. Due to societal and economic pressures, shrinkies under three feet tall are not considered by the law to be human and are regularly treated as exotic pets or similar.

   Shrinkies have few legal rights. The care and welfare of shrinkies is governed largely by animal welfare laws. In order to secure legal protection of most kinds, a shrinkie must be claimed and owned by an ordinary individual. Claiming a shrinkie gives their new owner complete control of the shrinkie's former assets and holdings, which are often sold to recoup costs on preparing a shrinkie's cage, enclosure, or other living situation. Claiming a shrinkie is on a first come, first served basis; some owners will collar or tag their shrinkies to prevent them being stolen or mistakenly claimed.

   If a shrinkie is unclaimed when they first contract Sudden Shrinking Syndrome they will often be gathered by animal control or other local government employees and taken to a shrinkie center. These are basic health and safety checkpoints where shrinkies are microchipped, fed, and temporarily housed while waiting for potential owners to take them into their care. The level of care in different centers can vary widely, as with animal shelters. Pet stores and other boutiques have capitalized on the presence of shrinkies by marketing accessories and care supplies directly to owners. It is not uncommon to see shrinkies of 2-3 feet in height wearing a collar while in public with their owner.

   A shrinkie's size commonly governs their living arrangements with an owner. Larger shrinkies in the 2-3 foot range will often have small beds, and may even have their own rooms in a house under a kindly owner. Shrinkies between 4 to 12 inches are commonly catered to by toy manufacturers. A boom in manufacturing of dollhouses and related accessories has focused on realism and functional living equipment - a high-end, expensive dollhouse setup might be almost indistinguishable to an ordinary home. Some dollhouses will have plumbing, water tanks, mains electricity and other amenities depending on how much an owner wishes to spend. Shrinkies that are 3 inches tall or smaller are more commonly kept in terrariums, hamster enclosures, and other similar pet enclosures that are humiliating but safe. Even tinier shrinkies may end up in ant farms.

   Shrinkies in the 'doll' size category are those most easily cared for and kept. From the perspective of a shrinkie in this size, a human will appear between 60-120 feet tall. An ordinary human's eye is roughly the size of the shrinkie's head in this instance. Doll sized shrinkies are easily carried in the hand. A human's index finger is commonly around the length of a doll sized shrinkie's leg.

6. #6Three Feet

   To a shrinkie that is 3 feet tall, an average human will appear roughly 12 feet tall by comparison. They will stand roughly waist height to an average human. A shrinkie this size will be eye level with a standard kitchen counter. Often called 'munchkin' size as a derogatory term.

7. #7Two Feet

   To a shrinkie that is 2 feet tall, an average human will appear roughly 18 feet tall by comparison. They will be slightly above knee height to an ordinary human. A 2 foot tall shrinkie will be eye level with a Golden Retriever when standing upright. This is roughly the size of a one year old child.

8. #8One Foot

   Keys: 1 foot, 12 inches, twelve inches, one foot

   To a shrinkie that is one foot, or twelve inches tall, an average human will appear roughly 35 feet tall by comparison. A shrinkie this size will stand roughly mid-shin height to a regular person. This is roughly the size of a Barbie doll. A shrinkie this size is easily picked up and a normal person's hand will fit comfortably around their waist.

9. #9Six Inches

   To a shrinkie that is 6 inches tall, an average human will appear roughly 70 feet tall by comparison. This is the size of an action figure. They will stand a little above ankle height to a normal person. At this size, a shrinkie's head is roughly the same size as a person's big toe. A normal human's palm would appear almost four feet across to a shrinkie this size.

    To a shrinkie that is 3 inches tall, an average human will appear roughly 140 feet tall by comparison. A shrinkie this height is roughly the size of a mouse. A normal person's palm would seem almost twelve feet across to a shrinkie this size. Commonly called 'mouselings.'

    To a shrinkie that is 1 inch tall, an average human will appear roughly 400 feet tall by comparison. The shrinkie is the size of a Warhammer figure or toy soldier. At this size, a shrinkie would stand below ankle height to a normal person. This is roughly the size of a normal person's little toe. A shrinkie this size fits easily in the mouth. A normal person's middle finger would seem 20 feet long to this shrinkie. Commonly called 'inchlings.'

    To a shrinkie that is just 5mm tall, an average human will appear a staggering 2000 feet tall by comparison. At this size, a shrinkie stands a little more than twice as thick as a human toenail. This is roughly the size of an ant. A normal person's hair will seem a full 2cm thick to this shrinkie. A normal person's nipple will seem a full 20ft tall to a shrinkie this size.

13. #13Arousal

    Due to their increased metabolic rate, shrinkies experience physical arousal at a higher rate and frequency than regular humans. Those beneath two feet tall are affected more strongly by this, and those six inches or smaller are almost constantly aroused.

14. #14Feeding

    Shrinkies are able to eat and process most food, regardless of their size. Smaller shrinkies (12 inches and smaller) can find it difficult to eat enough to maintain proper nutrition. Processed or pureéd foods can mitigate this. Shrinkie-specific foods can include thick pastes and stews or pellets for ease of consumption, and many shrinkie owners supplement these with treats of 'real' food on occasion. For shrinkies six inches or smaller, human breast milk is an effective and highly nutritious meal substitute.
