- #1Distant Rumors
Keys: overseas, outbreak, news, virus, reported · Secondary: headlines, radio, broadcast, television, social media
The outbreak begins in a major foreign city. Depending on the source, it may have started in an overcrowded hospital, a wet market, a research facility, or an airport transit hub. Reports conflict, and no single origin is confirmed.
- #2Unease
Keys: violent, ambulance, police, attack, emergency · Secondary: work, clinic, school, coworker, classmate
More people call in sick. Some who show up appear fatigued, irritable, or confused. Hospitals report increased admissions. Rumors circulate of patients becoming aggressive during treatment. Authorities attribute symptoms to complications from high fever.
- #3Local Disturbance
Keys: violent, ambulance, police, attack, emergency · Secondary: crowd, alert, sirens, lockdown, incident
Emergency services respond to multiple violent incidents. Witnesses describe sick people attacking others without warning. Official statements avoid panic-inducing language. Some neighborhoods report disturbances at night.
- #4Public Panic
Keys: gas, shortage, panic, empty shelves, grocery store · Secondary: crowd, fight, looting, supply, argument
Stores are cleared out within hours. Lines stretch around buildings. Arguments and fights break out over supplies. Gas becomes scarce. Internet and phone service become unreliable due to overload.
- #5Violent Outbreak
Keys: body, infected, reanimated, bite, dead · Secondary: Police, blackout, gunshots
It is confirmed that infected individuals who die can reanimate. Bite victims deteriorate rapidly and turn within hours. Military units establish checkpoints. Power outages begin. Gunfire echoes in some areas at night.
- #6Martial Law & Containment
Keys: military, stay inside, evacuation, martial law, curfew · Secondary: broadcast, order, shelter in place, barricade, checkpoint
Authorities declare martial law in major population centers. A stay-in-place order is issued through emergency broadcasts. Military units establish checkpoints and attempt controlled evacuations in select areas. Curfews are enforced. Some districts are sealed off entirely.
Tone: Structured control trying to hold back collapse.
- #7Self-Barricade Response
Keys: boarded, locked doors, hiding, barricade, windows covered · Secondary: apartment, supplies, neighborhood, house
Many civilians choose to barricade themselves inside homes and apartments. Furniture is pushed against doors. Windows are boarded. People ration food and avoid making noise. Some neighborhoods become eerily silent.
Tone: Quiet dread. Isolation horror.
- #8Retrenchment & Silence
Keys: silent, withdrawn, blackout, no signal, abandoned · Secondary: emergency broadcast, no response, checkpoint gone, static, empty streets
Military and government forces begin withdrawing from non-essential areas. Checkpoints are dismantled or left unmanned. Emergency broadcasts grow infrequent, repeating automated instructions. Large portions of the power grid fail, plunging districts into darkness. Phone service becomes unreliable or disappears entirely.
Official presence still exists in fortified zones, but entire neighborhoods are effectively abandoned. In many areas, there are no more sirens—only distant echoes or complete silence.
- #9Safe Zone / Containment Zone
Keys: refugee camp, quarantine zone, safe zone, evacuation center, shelter · Secondary: supplies, guarded, fenced, ration, screening
In certain areas, designated Safe Zones are established by military or local authorities. Survivors are screened for infection before entry. Weapons are often confiscated. Inside, food and water are rationed, and curfews are enforced.
Conditions vary. Some zones are orderly and secure behind fences and armed guards. Others are overcrowded, tense, and running low on supplies. Rumors persist that not all Safe Zones remain secure.
- #10Walkers
Keys: blind infected, blind, walkers, wandering infected · Secondary: sniffing, twitching, stumbling, dragging
Blind Drifters are late-stage infected whose eyesight has deteriorated completely. Their eyes appear clouded or damaged. They move slowly and erratically, relying on sound and scent. Sudden noise can provoke rapid lunging attacks, but otherwise they wander aimlessly.
They are physically degraded but persistent. Individually weak, they are dangerous in confined spaces.
- #11Runners
Keys: runner, fast infected, sprinting infected · Secondary: charging, crashing, slamming, reckless
Runners are recently turned infected in peak physical condition. They sprint at full speed toward movement or noise. Their aggression overrides coordination — they often crash into obstacles, fall, or injure themselves due to inability to slow down or turn sharply.
Runners are extremely dangerous in open areas but lose effectiveness in cluttered or tight environments.
- #12Alphas
Keys: coordinated infected, alpha infected, alpha · Secondary: observing, deliberate movement, patrol, remembering
Alpha infected are rare anomalies. Unlike other infected, they retain limited cognitive function and partial motor control. They can alternate between walking and running fluidly. Their movements appear intentional rather than erratic.
Alphas exhibit short-term memory and residual behavioral patterns from their former lives. They may return to familiar locations or repeat previous routines. They cannot form complex strategies or plan ambushes, but they may appear to “anticipate” movement based on remembered patterns.
Alpha infected are uncommon.
