- #1Demons
Keys: hell, Demon
Demons are a supernatural species consisting of dead human sinners and native citizens that inhabit Hell.
Demons are a catch-all term for any entity that resides in Hell. Demons can range from unique and sapient species, such as imps or succubi and non-sapient fauna species native to Hell, to more disparate and non-singular groups, such as Sinners, which represent less of a unique species and more of a disparate collection of incompatible mixtures of different entities who share a common origin as former humans. Demons come in all shapes and sizes.
Their physical forms typically have characteristics associated with the human body, except for having human ears and sometimes a lack of a nose.
Demon society follows cultural lines that are similar to those of humanity in some regards. There are laws that are upheld, facilities that provide goods and services (shops, news stations, bars, etc.), and emergency services such as fire departments.
Technological developments in Hell appear to mirror those on Earth, albeit with a twisted and demonic influence on the design outcome. However, some of Hell's technological developments, specifically weapons technology, have also been influenced and inspired by angelic technology to some unknown degree,[3] which changed the face of Hell combat and led to the development of "blessing" Hell weapons (such as the Carmine-Crafted Blessing-Tipped Rifle used in "The Harvest Moon Festival" and the Blessed Rope used in "Western Energy"), similar to Exorcist weaponry, which can kill even Demon Royalty.
While demon society is very diverse, it can be somewhat divided into two distinct groups in Hell - sinners and Hellborns. There are also Fallen Angels in Hell, however, Lucifer Morningstar and later Vaggie, are the only known Fallen Angels. As shown with Lucifer and Vaggie, both still seemingly retains the angelic powers they had as Angels. But in Lucifer's case, he also acquired powerful demonic powers combined with his angelic powers.
Most if not all demons also have a somewhat questionable moral compass.
Hell has seven rings. Hellborn, which applies to all demon species born in Hell, can be found in all seven rings of Hell and can freely travel across any and all of the rings. Charlie and Lucifer Morningstar are also able to travel the rings of Hell as well. Sinners, however, are unable to leave the Pride Ring due to a magical barrier that physically stops them, and thus are entirely present only in that ring.
As revealed in "Overture" by Lute, in regards to the annual Extermination by Heaven to cull Hell's overpopulation, Hellborn demons have been pardoned from the massacre as per the negotiation with Lucifer Morningstar, only allowing Sinners to be targeted and killed by the Exorcists.
As Hellborn demons were never human, nor did they ever live on Earth, they have no experience of humanity or the human world. In spite of this, Hellborns make ready usage of human inspired/derived technology and cultural norms.
Hierarchy Demons of Hell are governed by a crude form of hierarchy, in which one's position in the hierarchy is determined purely by the strength of the individual, and it is dominated by Lucifer, a Fallen Angel, above all other demons (even the likes of Satan and Beelzebub). This hierarchy is roughly divided into tiers; going top-to-bottom, it is as follows:
Lucifer - The King of Hell and the Sin of Pride Charlie - The Princess of Hell, as Lucifer's heir apparent to Hell's throne The Seven Deadly Sins - Demons who embody one of the seven deadly sins The Ars Goetia - Hellborn Demons with royal status, such as Prince Stolas[11] Overlords - Demons who wield considerable power from influence and deal-making Sinners - Immortal Demons who were once humans on Earth, having sinned, were damned to Hell after death Hellborn demons - Succubi, Incubi, and other species of demons native to Hell Imps and Hellhounds - The bottom of Hell's society The existence of the tiers demonstrate exceptions to the hierarchy system. The first being that a demon's status is treated variably. For instance, Charlie, despite being the second-highest-ranking demon, is not respected by the populace due to their spiteful climate, and her unwillingness to use any of her strength against them. Rather, respect is dependent on the power and intimidation of one's character, like in Lucifer's case.
In this hierarchy, Imps and Hellhounds as the lowest ranked are generally expected to do jobs in service to the higher ranked demons, and in the case of imps are sometimes viewed as "unemployed rabble". It is generally frowned upon for nobility and royalty to sleep with an imp, while some imps, like Striker, view Blitzo and Fizzarolli as embarrassments to imp-kind for having relations with "blue-bloods", such as Stolas and Asmodeus. Due to their low ranking, Hellhounds have to wait five years to get their Hellbies shot which should be done annually.
Demons are able to elevate their status by accumulating powers, which they receive by making deals, soul dealing, or even taking it by force. These beings, colloquially known as Overlords, could theoretically rival higher-ranking Hellborn demons or even royalty of Hell, although the royalty would still be considered above them. Overlords typically obtain or enhance their powers by making deals with other demons, as well as dominating them in battle and taking in their dark energy.
While there has never been mention of demons practicing any form of spiritualism or religion, many characters have been seen cursing by Satan's name in lieu of God, which is later confirmed in a stream by Vivienne Medrano that imps view Satan as a deity-like figure, implying there are some sort of belief systems or revering attitudes in Hell, at least with Satan.
Language Demons are known to possess their own languages, similar to how humanity has their own languages, as revealed when Charlie is stated to be fluent in every demon language she has learned while growing up. However, it has been explained that like other English-made media set in other countries where characters shouldn't be speaking in English as much as they do, the demons speak in English because it is the language of the show, and that their speaking in the Hell language goes without saying.[16] Despite this, demons seemingly do speak or can speak a form of English, which has been referred to as "Satan's plain English", and humans have been capable of understanding and conversing with demons and vice versa with no apparent difficulty.
The only other non-English languages that demons have communicated in either shows, so far, have been Spanish by Valentino, Carmilla Carmine, and Vassago, broken Italian by Fizzarolli, and Japanese by Niffty.
Cultural Relations Some Angels, such as the cherubs and exorcists, view themselves as holier and more worthy of existence than Demons under the presumption that all Demons -Sinner or Hellborn- are unholy and incapable of goodness.
Most humans are ignorant or unaware of the existence of demons. Few, such as D.H.O.R.K.S., are aware, but they don't understand their true nature. Some humans who are aware can show fear and hatred, such as Agents One and Two, who want to kill demons to protect humans. Some even worship certain demons, such as Martha who worshipped Satan, and a cult in "Apology Tour" who worshipped Stolas.
Additionally, Vivziepop has mentioned that in Hell demons treat Krampus like Santa Claus, viewing him like a good figure, and eagerly await Krampus' arrival. She also mentioned that like how Krampus is the negative contrast to Santa on Earth, there is a negative contrast to Krampus in Hell as well called the Black Hatter, who would come and beat up demons with his hat hands.
Holidays that demons celebrate include Halloween, where Hellborns are able to travel to Earth, and Sinsmas.
Biology Appearance Demons tend to have an overarching theme to their design, typically Hellborn species have very consistent appearances and biological designs according to their species, whereas sinners can have extremely diverse appearances, capable of looking like anything. sinners can resemble animals (some more so than others), objects (such as Vox appearing as a television, some gun-esque demons, or even inanimate objects such as couches), humanoid, and more, appearing in a wide array of colors, appearances, sizes, and structures based on what creature their character is based on. According to Vivziepop, hellborn demons appear more monstrous and non-human, whereas demons that appear more humanoid-looking, such as Lucifer and Charlie, are actually quite rare.
As some sinners can manifest in non-biological forms, such as televisions, furniture, and akin, it is possible that some form of magic can allow these sinners to function in spite of the lack of a biologically functional body. Hellborns are born with fully functional biological bodies and internal anatomy.
Some demons, particularly sinners and higher ranking Hellborns, are able to alter parts of themselves at will, such as gaining an extra or new set of appendages such as extra pairs of eyes, horns, limbs, or simply can enhance parts of their default form's body parts, such as the rest of Charlie's teeth becoming pointed fangs. This is referred to as a "full demon" form for sinners and certain Hellborn, and usually appears during periods of intense anger or other emotions.
Abilities Most, if not all demons can possess the following abilities:
Demon transformation - Some demons have demonstrated the ability to transform into larger, stronger, and more demonic alternate forms. Numerous characters have been shown capable of this, some being Charlie, Hellsa, Katie, Alastor, Vox, Stolas, Lucifer, Beelzebub, Mammon, Asmodeus, and Verosika and her crew. According to artist Faustisse, nearly all demons can transform when enraged or when in combat. Immortality - Demons, at least for sinners and Hellborn royalty, do not die of old age and most of the other natural causes that kill humans. Sinners can be infected by Hell's own diseases and the like, making them more miserable, though they can't die from those illnesses. It has yet to be shown how the sinner recovers; however, "Radio Killed the Video Star" has Velvette imply that, if a sinner is completely dismembered, even by another sinner as powerful as an Overlord, they may slowly "pull themselves back together" after some time. However, sinners can be permanently killed once they are hit with any Angelic Weapons. This trait appears to be exclusive to certain demon types, since Imps are capable of dying and aging naturally. Human disguise - As revealed in "Spring Broken", certain demons are able to shapeshift their appearance into a human lookalike in order to infiltrate the living world. This ability is not perfect, as some demonic characteristics can still be identified, such as eye color or ear shapes. Some human disguise transformations may rely on items such as an Asmodean Crystal or a spell from a grimoire. Ocular illumination - Most demons, regardless of species, have their eyes glow in the dark passively. Some also have the ability to make their eyes glow in a non dark environment. Unique abilities - Demons have a wide range of abilities, the types of which are occasionally attributed to certain Hellborn species, such as the succubi's ability to manipulate hormones. Some Hellborn species may even share the same abilities. For sinners, they possess abilities that vary for every individual, depending on their demon form. Flight - Certain demons, such as Succubi and some imps, possess wings that allow for flight. Some sinners, such as Husk, are capable of flight due to their sinner forms having wings. Demon magic - Some demons are able to do magic and cast spells, such as Charlie Morningstar, Lucifer Morningstar, and Octavia. However, some require special grimoires in order to do so, such as with Loona and Blitzo. Deal-making - Demons are capable of making deals and deal-contracts with other beings for stated or written terms. Deal-maker demons, such as Alastor, can increase their power by dealing in souls, which is a very powerful commodity in Hell, so they're seen as very manipulative and not to be toyed with. Deal-making is not something every demon can do, as such it is not to be taken lightly as it doesn't generally work out well for the other party.[24] Soul manipulation - Demons who own souls can control those souls, typically expressed via ethereal chains.
Mortality All demon species are vulnerable to physical trauma, however, certain groups are immune to death by conventional means. Imps, and several other non-royal Hellborn species, can be killed by conventional weapons and means, in addition to angelic weaponry, although this has yet to be confirmed to be the case for all non-royal Hellborn.
Sinners, and Hellborn demons who are part of "Demon Royalty" such as Stolas, can only be killed by angelic weapons, typically wielded by Exorcists. In the case of Sir Pentious in "The Show Must Go On", Adam vaporized him with angelic light, implying that a demon, or more precisely a Sinner, can be killed with angelic magic, however, it is unknown if it can permanently kill any demon like an angelic weapon can since Sir Pentious ascended into Heaven as a redeemed soul.
For sinners, when hit by an Exorcist's weapon, it results in the "final death" of the demon,[22] and the demon's body is "killed off", while the remaining dark energy in the soul is left to wander into inanimate objects in its surroundings, which purportedly explains why some things such as regular furniture have functioning eyes.
Lifespan It is suggested that some demons may not be biologically immortal, suggesting that they can still die from certain causes, such as old age. Sinners stop aging when they arrive in Hell (ex - Alastor dying in his 30s, he will remain 30 years old for the rest of eternity in Hell). As for Hellborn demons, they are proven to age, denoted in "hell years". However, the rate and overall longevity is unknown. In the case of demonic royalty, such as Charlie, it is known that they are biologically immortal and can live for a long period of time until an angelic weapon-based death, as seen in the case with Stolas, who is immortal but vulnerable to a death caused by an angelic weapon.
Like humans, Hellborn demons are considered legal adults once they become 18.
Demons are able to consume food and similar sustenance, suggesting they need the intake in order to survive, which is supported by the Wrath Ring's essential role in food provision. It is unknown if sinners also require food to survive, although many do consume food, as shown by Angel Dust and Alastor.
Reproduction Vivziepop has stated that sinners cannot reproduce as part of their punishment, but Hellborn demons such as Charlie, Imps, and the Von Eldritch family can reproduce, however for the Sins she only said they "maybe can", except Lucifer who can and already has a child. In the case of Charlie, her birth is yet to be explained as Lucifer is a Fallen Angel in a relationship with Lilith, an unspecified demon type despite being originally human, similar to how sinners used to be human.
Hellborn species are capable of cross-species breeding and can produce hybridized offspring. Striker, a cross between an Imp and another unknown Hellborn species, was the first known depiction of hybrids in the series. The method of inheritance and genetics, in addition to whether hybrid offspring are still viable, is unknown.
- #2Sinners
Keys: Sinner
Sinner Demons, also known simply as Sinners, are a subspecies of demons that were all once humans who committed sins before they died, which results in them being damned to Hell as their punishment in the afterlife.
They are ranked above the Hellborn demons such as succubi, imps, and hellhounds in terms of Hell's hierarchy.
Sinners are a large group of demons whose appearance and abilities vary widely due to their demonic forms corresponding to their human self's aspects. They are in the lower-middle levels of Hell's hierarchy, above the three lowest tiers.[2] Sinners have known limitations that separate them from the natural Hellborn demons; for instance, all sinners are confined to the Pride Ring and are unable to traverse through the other rings[3] due to a magical barrier that physically stops them.[4]
Furthermore, sinners are the only known species of demon that cannot reproduce, which is part of their punishment, but can still have sex.[5] Although they are the souls of dead humans, these demons are shown to still consume food and the like, which suggests that their bodies still need the intake in order to survive or at least be active. They also apparently need to sleep.
Despite these setbacks, Sinners have the rare privilege of changing their social status by gaining additional power, either by making deals with stronger demons and/or taking power by force.[6] Those who have accumulated enough power through these deals can rise in social status[7] to the next class in the hierarchy, the Overlords. Furthermore, sinners are ageless and do not physically age and, therefore, will not die from the natural passage of time. Nonetheless, they can still be hurt, and in certain conditions, killed.
Additionally, some Sinners can enter a state of partialism, where elements of their full demonic form make their way into their humanoid form. This seems to be voluntary, occurring if they feel sinister or when they feel strong emotions such as anger.
Cultural Relations Within the populaces of Heaven and Hell, there has been bias and stigma towards Sinners, mainly from Angels, as Sinners had their chance to do what is right on Earth but went to Hell because they committed unforgivable acts which earned them eternal damnation. With this, many angels and demons refuse to give another thought about Sinners and view them as irredeemable, and some deny that Sinners should get a second chance to enter Heaven under the belief that divine judgement is unquestionable and is final at death. Many Sinners also adopted this view, believing they blew their one shot into Heaven and as such didn't even try to redeem themselves. For instance, when several Sinners hear Charlie's announcement of the Happy Hotel, they laughed at and mock the idea, and Alastor, whilst being a Sinner working with the Hotel, didn't believe Sinners could change for the better, calling them "loathsome", and aware that they can't undo what is done. Similarly, Valentino mocks the idea that Angel Dust can improve.
Lucifer in particular, a fallen angel himself, downright admits Sinners are horrible thanks to abusing the gift of free will he and Lilith gave them, and even made sure only Sinners would die during the Extermination while the Hellborn were pardoned. The Exorcists, Adam and Lute, refuse to believe Sinners should be given a chance at redemption, and are willing to punish any Exorcist who dares to spare even one from death. Vaggie, while having abandoned her Exorcist life and views, is still wary of Sinners who could hurt her or Charlie. Despite this, several Angels in Heaven's courthouse, including the Seraphim Emily, were horrified that Sinners were being killed annually, and that Sera, the High Seraphim, allowed this.
However, after the discovery of Sir Pentious's ascension to Heaven in "Curtain Call", many sinners have realized that they can truly have a new opportunity to redeem themselves. Because of this, sinners have flocked to the Hazbin Hotel with the purpose of atoning and gaining entry to Heaven.
Some Hellborn also have a low opinion of Sinners, with some such contempt seeming to stem from the Sinners' human roots, with Millie believing humans to be inherently vile and them being sentenced to Hell as evidence behind the callous predisposition a Sinner expresses. However, the majority of Hellborns have little to no problem living and working beside Sinners within the Pride Ring.
Biology Appearance There is no true extent to a Sinner's appearance, since it is the manifestation of the soul in question. Usually, a human's demon form is influenced by the human's soul, sins, appearance in life, or crimes.[8][9][10] An example being Angel Dust and his family: since he was in the mafia, he and his family members who are with him in Hell have spider-like appearances because of their "web" of crimes.[11] Sometimes, the form is influenced by the human's death, such as Lyle Lipton acquiring teeth akin to that of piano keys after being crushed to death by a falling piano, Alastor having several deer traits due to being mistaken for a deer by the hunter who killed him, and Vox having a television for a head because he died from one falling on his head. In Vox's case, he is able to upgrade his TV head through unknown means.
In general, their standard appearance is humanoid, in the sense of having humanoid body structure: being bipedal (with a few exceptions, such as Lyle Lipton and Sir Pentious, that have no legs), possessing opposable thumbs and having an upright posture. And in spite of them being deceased souls, they are shown to still follow some human anatomy, such as possessing bones, flesh, and internal organs, and also still having red blood.
Abilities Most, if not all sinners share the following traits:
Demon transformation - A few Sinners have demonstrated the ability to transform into larger, stronger, and more demonic alternate forms, as shown by Alastor, Killjoy, and Vox. Animalistic tendencies - When a Sinner has an animal theme, the Sinner will have certain behaviors related to it. Alastor, a deer-themed sinner, makes elk bugle noises when entering his full demon form and bleats like a fawn if he's feeling contentment. Valentino, a moth-themed sinner, makes squeaking noises every now and then. Husk, a cat-like sinner, purrs if feeling contentment. Some sinners, such as Vox, can have animal traits like gills even when they're not an overtly animal-themed sinner. Object tendencies - When a Sinner has an inanimate object theme to them, they will gain traits from that. For example, Alastor has a radio theme so he has radio traits like making static noises, whereas Vox has television attributes and other cybernetics because he's part TV. Immortality - Sinners do not age and remain the same age as when they died (ex: Alastor died in his 30s, so he will remain in his 30s forever in Hell), and thus do not die of old age and other natural causes that kill humans. They also cannot die via damage to the body or from earth-borne illnesses. When a Sinner is damaged or hurt in an extreme way (ex: being crushed by a piece of rubble or shot in the head), they will not die from it, or at least not permanently.[12] It has yet to be shown how the sinner recovers; however, Velvette implied in "Radio Killed the Video Star" that even if a sinner is completely dismembered, they will slowly "pull themselves back together" after some time. Another example of a sinners immortality was seen in "New Pentious", where a sinner had Niffty fatally stab her in the stomach and photograph her doing it, demonstrating how fatal injuries are not truly life threatening to them and they can recover from normally life threatening injuries. However, Sinners can still be killed once they are hit with any Angelic Weapons.[13][14] Superhuman durability - Since Sinners are already the dead souls of humans, they are highly resilient and are unharmed by most things that can harm humans. However, there are things that can injure or incapacitate a demon, Sinner or Hellborn, that being infected by Hell's own diseases and the like,[15][16] or if a demon is struck by an angelic weapon.[17] High pain tolerance - Many sinners, including Niffty, Valentino, and Vox, can shrug off pain like it's nothing, no matter how severe the injury is as long as it's not from angelic weaponry. Some even enjoy pain, such as Niffty. Drug and alcohol tolerance - As Sinners are already "dead", they are free to indulge in drug addiction and alcoholism as they can't die from a drug overdose or alcohol poisoning, though this doesn't prevent them becoming intoxicated, hungover, or unwell from overusing them. Unique abilities - Whereas Hellborn Demons have specific powers attributed to their species, sinners are offered a larger selection of abilities that varies by individual, based on their life, sins, personalities, interests, and deaths as humans. These range from Alastor's wide arsenal of powers, Angel Dust's additional sets of arms, or Husk's stage magic and ability to fly.
Restrictions & Weaknesses Confinement The sinners are contained within the Ring of Pride and are incapable of traveling to the other Rings of Hell for an unknown reason. If they were to try to leave the Pride Ring, a magical barrier would physically prevent them.[4] This is seemingly confirmed in the Helluva Boss short "Mission: It's Chaz Funeral", when Emberlynn Pinkle attends Chazwick Thurman's funeral via a video call on a computer tablet in the Greed Ring.
Sterility Unlike Hellborn demons, sinners are unable to physically reproduce as part of their punishment. However, they are still capable of performing intercourse.
Mortality Sinners can only be killed by angelic weapons; these are made from a special metal and are typically wielded by Exorcists.[13]
When Sinners are fatally hit by an angelic weapon, it results in the "erasure" or "final death" of the demon,[13] and the demon's body is "killed off", while the remaining dark energy in the soul is left to wander into inanimate objects in its surroundings, which explains why some things such as regular furniture have functioning eyes.[18] However, if they are simply injured by an angelic weapon, they can survive but will take time to recover.
However, in the case of Sir Pentious in "The Show Must Go On", Adam vaporized him with angelic light, possibly implying that a Sinner can be killed with angelic magic. Although, it is unknown if it can permanently kill a Sinner like an angelic weapon since Sir Pentious ascended into Heaven as a redeemed soul.
Redemption A rare and esoteric phenomenon, redemption is when a sinner can ascend to Heaven and become a winner angel. Because of the rarity of this event, as well as lack of information on what causes redemption, the details of this process and requirements of how to do so are not defined. Furthermore, as sinners expressed an overall disinterest in attempting to change their ways, most demons and angels viewed the chance of redemption as impossible.
The only known case of redemption occurring is Sir Pentious. During "The Show Must Go On", resolved to not repeat the mistakes of his life and do something to protect his friends even despite his fear of knowing he stood no chance, he attempted to attack Adam with his blimp as an act of self-sacrifice. After being instantly vaporized by Adam, he was sent to Heaven as a winner and became the first sinner to be redeemed. It is suggested by the Speaker of God in "Storyteller" that he was redeemed due to acting selfless, and by caring more for the lives of others than his own, made the ultimate sacrifice, atoning for the sins of his past life of allowing a serial killer to get away with multiple murders despite knowing who the murderer was. This may suggest that in order to be redeemed, a sinner has to resolve to be a better person and act selfless, and as Charlie comes to the conclusion of in "Hazbin Hotel: Behind Closed Doors", act against the sin which damned them to Hell originally.
- #3Imps
Keys: Imp
Imps are a subspecies of Hellborn Demons that hold the lowest ranking in Hell's hierarchy alongside Hellhounds.
Imps are essentially the "working-class" of Hell's society. They hold the lowest ranking in Hell's hierarchy, alongside Hellhounds, and therefore are among the least respected and most likely to be hired for heavy labor work, or as servants for higher ranking demons.
There is a hotspot in the Pride Ring for imps called Imp City, which appears extremely shabby and rundown, even by Hell's standards.
Due to their poor status among the demons of Hell's hierarchy, imps do not get along with higher-ranked demons, who possess natural stigma toward them for perceived inferiority. Stella, a Goetic demon, calls imps "peasants", "plebeians", and "poor people", and is openly against the idea of high-ranked demons, more specifically a demon of the Goetia, sleeping or being in a relationship with an imp. Paimon, Stolas' father and another Goetic demon, sees the idea of a high-ranked demon bowing to an imp ridiculous, saying imps should be bowing to them. In "Ozzie's", when Asmodeus finds out Stolas and Blitzo were at his club, he mocks the Goetic demon in how he had fallen from his grace having "sold his life for a thrust".
In "Mission: Zero", Blitzo recalls on how imps play their role in Hell society, mostly serving low-end jobs and generally serving sinners, referring to their low status in Hell's hierarchy. It's apparently common for new sinners to believe imps are there to torture sinners' souls for all eternity in Hell, albeit are incorrect in this belief.
In "Western Energy", a fish demon child innocently calls Blitzo a "fire toad" when he was surprised that St. An's Hospital allowed imps in, visibly offending him, and the mother tells her child to wait until they are in the car as "it's not polite to say that to their face", she also calls Blitzo someone of the "unemployed rabble", implying there's racial stereotype about Imps being unemployed and all imps being from the Wrath Ring.
Imps, as a species of demon, can be held in contempt by Angels. The Cherubs in "C.H.E.R.U.B", say that imps are "nothing but dirt that shitty dead people tread on".
In "Ghostf**kers", it is said that imps, or specifically Wrathian imps, are expected to be nothing more than dumb muscle. In addition, imps typically do not manage to work for themselves, and any cases otherwise, such as starting their own business, is considered impressive.
In "Mastermind", Satan mentions that he created the imps to be obedient and dutiful in their role as part of the workforce of Hell and that any imp who attempts to try and rise from that role to "gain the upper hand" by defying higher ranks is considered disgraceful or even a disappointment to their kind.
Despite being the lowest and least respected species of demons, some imps enter relationships with higher ranked demons.
Imps are designed to look like how the devil is typically portrayed in media, with red skin, horns and an arrow-tipped tail. Sometimes there is black or white stripes or splotches on the tail. All imps have skin in a shade of red and striped horns. Imps have yellow (or lime-green like Fizzarolli) sclerae that glow in the dark with black slitted pupils, and sometimes visible red irises that tend to grow wide when an Imp is angered; some imps have white markings on their skin as well.
One of the most distinctive traits that tell imps apart is the shape of their horns, which the shape can vary greatly between individuals. Imps themselves also come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The majority of imps are smaller in stature than humans, but imp height varies significantly, ranging from between comparable to an average human, to small enough to fit into a bag.
Imps exhibit sexual dimorphism of their hair and horns depending on their birth sex: female imps generally have dark hair and black horns with thin white or grey grooves on them, while male imps tend to have white hair with striped black-and-white horns.[4] Although these are predominant traits, there are apparent exceptions, such as a male imp with dark hair that can be seen in the background of the episode "Loo Loo Land". Sallie May, a transgender female imp, has black hair like female imps, however, her horns and parts of her hair remain biologically unaltered. Lin, an older female imp, has greying hair. It can be noted that some Imps naturally lack hair their entire lives. In the case of Cash Buckzo, his kids, and Fizzarolli, they would be considered bald.[note 1] Once an imp's horn(s) breaks, they don't grow back. Imps appear to take a measure of pride in their horns, as Fizzarolli's were once considered larger than Blitzo's during their youth in the circus, which was considered a sore spot for the former. Following the accident that resulted in his grievous injuries and broke his horns, Fizzarolli covers them with a jester hat out of shame and as a result is very insecure about them.
Imp heads are relatively large compared to their bodies, and have some vaguely reptilian traits, such as a lack of ears, lack of a defined nose, and their heads often have a slight conical point towards the upper lip. Imp head shape varies notably, such as Blitzo and Barbie Wire having elongated rear craniums. Although imps usually appear to lack any nostrils at all, they are revealed to actually have nostrils when actively smelling something. Their teeth are often shown as sharp and conical, and their tongues are forked like those of snakes.
Imp arms and legs have some amount of variation, they may have either plantigrade or digitigrade feet, typically with hooves or claws, which are usually black. Some imps may have natural high heels on their feet, as evidenced by Blitzo. Both Blitzo and Barbie Wire have wrists and ankles which are relatively thick and undefined.
As first shown in "Murder Family", imp blood is black. Some imps appear to produce animalistic sounds that are unique to individual imps. Examples include Blitzo generating cat-like purring, Moxxie's occasional habit of hissing like a cat when annoyed such as in "Seeing Stars", Striker's tendency to hiss and rattle his tail, and Millie making chittering shrieks when angered. Some imps, like Blitzo and Striker, have spikes down their back, tail, and head. Said spikes can also appear to vibrate and make a rattling sound like that of a rattlesnake if an imp is threatened such as the case with Blitzo.
Abilities Ocular illumination - Imps have the natural ability to project light from their eyes when they are in dimly lit areas. Pyrokinesis - At least some imps are capable of producing flames, such as the imp carnie in "Loo Loo Land", who lights a cigarette made from a bill with a flick of his finger. Earthly fire immunity - As shown in "Murder Family", imps are completely resistant to the fire of Earth, and being fully engulfed in it does no harm to them. It is unknown if this is an ability unique to imps, or if it is a trait all demons possess. Prehensile tail - Imps are able to use their tail to grasp things, such as when shown in "The Harvest Moon Festival" that Blitzo uses his tail to grab Striker and throw him with it. Elastic tongue - As shown by Blitzo in "Murder Family", imps can shoot out their tongue to catch food midair. Smell - Although not as strong as a Hellhounds sense of smell, Imps are capable of smelling unique things, like the "scent of the living world" on Sinners, which allows them to indicate that they recently died. This was shown when with Blitzo who smelled Loopty Goopty and deduce that he had recently just died due to his human scent. Flight - Some imps are born with wings behind their backs,[5] which grants them the ability to fly. Horns - Imp horns can be particularly sharp enough to wound attacking demons as is the case in "Exes and Oohs" when Millie cuts open a mafia demons stomach using Blitzo's horns when she swung him like a weapon. There is a limit to how durable their horns are as they can break from extreme heat or impact. Drug tolerance - While imps can become dependent or addicted to drugs, such as the Hell drug known as H-8, to the point they need to be rehabilitated, it would appear they are very tolerant when it comes to the effects of earthly drugs such as heroin, as Blitzo claims that heroin barely gets rid of a headache in "Unhappy Campers". Much like their immunity to earthly fire, it remains unknown if this is a trait other demons possess. That said, imps suddenly being covered with large amounts of heroin can apparently affect them into becoming feral and violent.
Mortality Unlike demon royalty and sinners, it appears in the episode "Loo Loo Land" that imps can be killed by non-Angelic Weapons. For unknown reasons, either due to being members of the lowest class of demons or being a hellborn species, imps can suffer fatal wounds from regular weapons, such as knives and guns, or can even die from being petrified into stone from Stolas' gaze. A headshot from a gun has also been shown to be significant enough to kill an imp completely. In the episode "The Harvest Moon Festival", it is confirmed by Millie's parents that imps can indeed be killed, such as during a natural disaster or during a violent festival event.
Although imps possess a certain resistance to fire, this seems to depend on the type of fire: Blitzo and Millie were observed being consumed by fire from Earth and emerging unharmed in "Murder Family", while in "Oops", Blitzo and Fizzarolli sustained injury to a fire that broke out in Hell. This suggests that their resistance is restricted to Earthly fire. It can also be assumed that smoke inhalation is still fatal to imps, as suggested by a group of firefighting imps wearing gas masks in the course of their work.
In "Ghostf**kers", Blitzo mentions that imps can suffer and can die from conditions such as heart attacks and diabetes.
Despite having a high tolerance to drugs and alcohol, a hellhound in "Queen Bee" says that Blitzo is gonna die during the drinking challenge with Beelzebub. It is implied that the drink he consumed was most likely Beelzejuice, an alcoholic beverage made in Hell by Beelzebub, which may also imply that the high alcohol and drug tolerance may not apply to specific Hell-made drugs and alcohol and imps could die from consuming high amounts.
- #4Hellhounds
Keys: Hellhound
Hellhounds, also known simply as Hounds, are a sapient subspecies of demons native to Hell. They share the lowest ranking in Hell's hierarchy alongside Imps.
Hellhounds are in the lowest-ranking tier of Hell's hierarchy system, along with imps.[2] Because of this, the majority have a servitude role and used primarily for labor or work to the point that their service is advertised by businesses.[3] They resemble anthropomorphic canines such as domestic Earth dogs and wolves. It's also implied Hellhounds can be pets for other demons.
Hellhound orphans can be adopted by other demons regardless of demon species in animal shelter-esque adoption centers as pets, cheap labor, bodyguards, or family. The condition of the center Loona was adopted from was in poor condition, with the orphans being behind bars and not appearing well-cared for. Any orphan not adopted by the age of 18 will "age-out" of the adoption circuit and kicked out as they would legally be considered an adult.
Due to being low ranked like imps, and having a natural, animalistic behavior and appearance, they are treated similar to guard dogs and pets instead of people by other demons. Due to this, Hellhounds have to wait five years for their annual Hellbies shot appointment at St. An's Hospital.
Despite being equal ranked, some imps seem to have a low opinion on hellhounds. Imps can also own and adopt hellhound orphans for whatever they desire. From the rather short time period Blitzo was able to adopt Loona before her 18th birthday, adopting a hellhound orphan seems to be much easier to do than a human adopting a child on Earth.
Hellhounds are anthropomorphic demons that resemble canines or canine-like carnivorans, taking after one specific breed or species for their appearance, with some looking like wolves, and others like more traditional domesticated dog breeds, such as Doberman, poodles, dachshunds, bulldogs, Labradors, and huskies. Hellhounds thus far all share bright red sclera with white irises, as well as distinguishable ears, tails, and muzzles specific to their breed-inspired type.
Abilities Human disguise - Some Hellhounds have been shown to be able to don a human appearance on Earth. These disguises typically retain some traits of their true demon forms, in the case of Vortex's his scarred eye is prominently featured. Ocular illumination - As shown with Loona, hellhounds have the ability to make their eyes glow. Enhanced senses - Hellhounds appear to have an amazing extrasensory type of smell for tracking a target by sniffing an item that identifies them. Loona, for instance, smelled a hit list of humans for the I.M.P and could identify who their targets were even though it was no more than a list of names. However, their sense of smell can be hindered by air pollutants, such as the case with Loona being unable to sniff out Octavia in Los Angeles due to the polluted air. Quadrupedalism - As shown by Loona when she reacted with seeing her Hellbies shot, Hellhounds can go from biped to quadruped. Feral transformation - As shown by Loona in "Sinsmas", Hellhounds can demonstrate the ability to transform into large, quadrupedal demon canine creatures, large enough to allow an large imp to ride on them.
Behavior Hellhounds typically behave no more differently than other demons. However, they do possess canine-like qualities such as snarling and showing teeth when angered, ears and tails perking up or going down according to their mood, and reacting like a dog being taken to the vet for a shot, as well as lashing out when cornered.
Mortality Similarly to Imps, Hellhounds can be killed by non-Angelic Weapons, like gunshots to the head, as seen when Blitzo shot a Hellhound off of Fizzarolli in "MAMMON'S MAGNIFICENT MUSICAL MID-SEASON SPECIAL (ft Fizzarolli)".
According to Blitzo, there is a disease called Hellbies that Hellhounds can catch if they do not get vaccinated annually, but because of the low placement in Hell's hierarchy it takes five years to schedule an appointment at St. An's Hospital. While the full extent of Hellbies is not clear, Blitzo was determined to ensure Loona got her shot no matter what.
- #5Succubi
Keys: Succubi, succubus
Succubi are a subspecies of Hellborn Demons that have the second lowest ranking in Hell's hierarchy along with other unknown demon species.[1]
The species are known to have sexually intensifying abilities to humans.
Succubi demons are in the second-lowest ranking tier in terms of Hell's hierarchy alongside other Hellborn demons, ranking just above imps and hellhounds.
They are one of the few demons that are allowed access to the human world in order to do their jobs of seducing humans, the exact reasons for these actions are unknown. While in the living realm, they shapeshift into human forms as disguises to avoid detection from humans.
Succubi possess voluptuous, yet human-like figures, stocky to slender, and have color schemes consist of black and red with a pinkish hue. They have black-tipped horns, a barbed tail, and small bat-like wings sprouting from their backs. The tip of their tail can be triangular or heart-like shaped. Succubi have yellow sclera with pink or red irises. They also possess human-like feet. Freckles on a succubus would be light pink.
Succubi have some biological similarities to imps, including the lack of an obvious nose. Albeit, succubi are taller, have smaller horns, and possess more varied skin tones of pink and red. Some succubi also possess (pointed) ears, a rare trait for a demon.
Hair colors vary between succubi. They can be brunette, ravenette, grey, blonde, or even pink. Succubi can also be bald.
While fashion can vary, many succubi typically wear revealing or sexually appealing clothes.
Abilities Erokinesis - All succubi have the ability to enhance sexual desire in humans by exuding a supernatural allure, allowing them to seduce their targets. It is unknown to what degree regular demons are effected by this. However, Hellhounds appear to be either immune or resistant to these effects. The exact strength of a succubi's manipulation against a human is unknown, as a small contingent of human law enforcement officers appeared initially unaffected by the presence of a group of succubi, whereas a large gathering of (alcohol inhibited) human partygoers were overwhelmingly affected by their presence. Sexual inducement - Succubi have the ability to trigger the sex hormones of anyone they make contact with upon sight, touch, or voice, and triggers anyone to become sexually active. Human shapeshifting - Certain succubi have the ability to project and shapeshift into any human form that they see fit. Some succubi cannot perfectly shapeshift, leaving some notable defects such as pointed ears or unnatural colored eyes. Given the revelation of succubi utilizing Asmodean Crystals, it is unknown if this is an ability succubi can use or one via the crystals. Flight - All succubi have wings which allows them to fly.
Mortality In "The Full Moon", a male succubus demon was shot in the head by a regular bullet from Collin's exoskeleton rifle and died, revealing that succubi can die to non-angelic weaponry, like imps and hellhounds.
- #6Overlords
Keys: Overlord
Overlords are a class of powerful Demons in Hell. They rank just above regular Sinner Demons and place fifth in terms of power in Hell's hierarchy.[2]
The concept of Overlords was first introduced in the pilot of Hazbin Hotel during the scene where Vaggie explains to Angel Dust about Alastor's origins.
As said in "Silenced", Alastor was one of the strongest Overlords before he was captured by Vox in "It's A Deal", which caused a large power shift between the Overlords that made Vox be viewed as one of the most powerful Overlords.
The Overlords rule over certain parts of Hell, each commanding a domain of influence to which Sinner demons submit. Their estate varies from minor to major, as does their reputation, with some being so infamous that lesser beings have been seen cowering at the mere sight of a prominent Overlord in the street. Even demons who have a higher position in Hell's hierarchy than the Overlords, like Charlie, can be fearful of them. Power struggles between Overlords give rise to both alliances and rivalries, such as the alliance of the Vees, or the rivalries between Alastor and Vox or Carmilla and Velvette.
As stated by Carmilla Carmine, Overlords gain and increase their power by owning souls. A small group of overlords can collectively own millions of the souls that reside in Hell and exploit them to increase their own power and influence. Ownership can be direct, such as by having a victim sign away their soul through a contract or by striking a soul-binding deal. Valentino's binding of Angel Dust is accomplished through such a contract, and Alastor's bargain-struck possession of Husk is similarly unbreakable. The binding power of deals was later confirmed in "Hello Rosie!", where Alastor sealed a deal with Charlie via handshake and verbal agreement, with shaking hands being a requirement.[3] Deals do not necessarily involve a soul, but always follow a stated term of exchange.[4]
There could be loopholes that can be found in an Overlord's contract or deal, such as with Angel Dust, where while Valentino owns his soul, he can physically exploit Angel Dust only while they are in his studio. Valentino is never seen teleporting his debtors to himself despite having ample motive, unlike Alastor who can summon Husk and Niffty, as well as some demons to fix the Hotel wall in "Radio Killed the Video Star", at his will. In "It's A Deal", Alastor proposed to Vox a deal where he would surrender himself and allow Vox to be his captor, in exchange he never lay his hands on Charlie Morningstar, but while Vox understood this as "not harming her", it is revealed in "Curtain Call" that the deal meant "laying his hand on her" literally, and the deal is broken upon Vox touching Charlie with his hands. In "The Show Must Go On", Alastor himself is revealed to be seeking his freedom his own deal, where in exchange for his soul, he was made the strongest sinner, which he succeeds in breaking his deal by having Charlie announce to Hell that Vox was the strongest sinner in "Curtain Call".
Some Overlords may also form affiliations with each other to create alliances that differ in scope. One such alliance is between Vox, Valentino, and Velvette, who are joined in a special Overlord triumvirate called the "Vees" as major influencers in the media industry.[5][6] In "It's A Deal", Alastor is shown to have his soul owned by Rosie, who has had Alastor doing things around Hell for her for years, now being at the Hazbin Hotel, but she also offers him some opportunities to make deals in "Hello Rosie!", where she also agreed to his asking for help in protecting the Hotel. Carmilla Carmine and Zestial were also stated to be in an alliance of sorts as Zestial has chosen to assist Carmilla in her endeavors in his retirement.[7] In "Scream Rain", Vox and Carmilla are shown to be in a partnership, where she is building Vox a weapon to use against Heaven.
Though some Overlords are condemned to remain in the Pride Ring due to their origins as Sinner demons, their influence can extend beyond the Pride Ring, such as Carmilla's weapons and Vox's merchandise that can be found in the other rings of Hell. Further, Carmilla Carmine gained the reputation as the "top weapons dealer" in Hell, suggesting that their businesses, names, and reputation can spread to the other rings of Hell.
An Overlord can lose their status by loss of influence or by unfavorable bargain, even selling their own soul. In "Masquerade", Husk reveals that he was once an Overlord before betting his soul in a gamble to keep his power. An Overlord might alternatively keep their status and influence even if deal-bound, as shown by Alastor who was in a deal with Rosie, albeit it was shown that Rosie's ownership of Alastor's soul is unknown to the rest of Hell. The view of an Overlord's power and influence might shift when they are defeated one another, as seen in "Silenced" after Alastor was captured by Vox, other Overlords such as Prick and Zeezi noted they had never seen that big of a power shift.
Cultural Relations Some Overlords don't get along with each other either due to personal relations or disagreement with practices. One example is the rivalry between Vox and Alastor, whom have different views on technology and the latter refusing the former's offer to join his team.
Some lower-ranked demons look up to Overlords, like Sir Pentious who idolized the Vees and wanted to join them, while others wish to kill Overlords, such as Striker who offered Blitzo to join him in slaying Overlords. In addition, some demons dislike Overlords in general, and due to little consequence for having no respect for high-ranked demons, the only way to keep a demon passive to an Overlord is through fear and power.
Due to an Overlord possessing the ability to own a demons soul through deals and contracts, both parties of the deal can take advantage of their side, often exploiting it. One example is the deal between Angel Dust and Valentino; Valentino can do what he pleases to Angel while he is in the studio while Angel is free of him when he is outside of the studio. Additionally, the relationships between an Overlord and a soul they own can be overall negative, such as the case with Alastor and Husk, and Valentino and Angel.
Deal-maker demons, such as Alastor, can increase their power by dealing in souls, which is a very powerful commodity in Hell, so they're seen as very manipulative and not to be toyed with. Deal-making is not something every demon can do, as such it is not to be taken lightly as it doesn't generally work out well for the other party.[8]
Overlords tend to refuse acting for a good deeds, mostly due to their reputation as fearsome and powerful demons, and are almost always acting to gain something in return. They also usually refuse to work together, with most of them working on their own, separated from the others. Only in very rare ocations of extreme urgency they are seen together, like in "Scrambled Eggs" when Carmilla Carmine summoned all her fellow Overlords to discuss the repercussions of the most recent Extermination, or in "Curtain Call" when all of them joined and helped to stop the massive angelical weapon, though they agreed to never speak about it immediately after.
