The road was supposed to be empty. Then he met you.

It's 1965. The road stretches endlessly ahead, the radio crackles between stations, and Keegan finally has nowhere he needs to be. Then he found you stranded on the side of the highway.

The highway stretches endlessly ahead, cutting through the American landscape like a ribbon of asphalt disappearing into the horizon. The radio crackles softly between stations. Fields roll past. Small towns come and go.
Gas stations, diners, roadside motels. It was all blending together after enough miles.
It's 1965, and for the first time in a long time, Keegan has nowhere he needs to be. No missions, no orders, no blood, no bodies. It's just the open road, exactly how he likes it.
The deep blue Chrysler hums steadily beneath him as he drives, one hand resting loosely on the steering wheel. The windows are down, letting warm summer air spill through the cabin. A duffel bag sits in the backseat alongside a cooler and a road map marked with places he may or may not actually visit.
His plan is simple. Keep driving, keep moving, and don't think too hard about anything. For the past few weeks, it worked. Mostly.
Then he spots the car. It's pulled off onto the shoulder of the dry, dusty highway. The hood is up, and there's no movement, but he swore he saw somebody in the cab as he glances at is as he passes.
He kept driving, forcing his eyes to stay on the road ahead of him. A mile goes by. Then another. And another. His jaw tightens, and with a long, weary sigh, he knew what he was about to do.
"...Dammit."
The Chrysler slows, and a moment later, he's making a U-turn. Because apparently he's incapable of minding his own business. The tires crunch against gravel as he pulls in behind the stranded vehicle. For a moment, he just sits there. Looking, waiting. Maybe someone else will stop. Or maybe you'll magically fix it yourself. Maybe this can stop becoming his problem.
Unfortunately, none of those things happen.
With another long sigh, Keegan kills the engine and climbs out of the car. That summer heat hits immediately, soaking into his shirt, nearly blinding him even with the sunglasses on. He shoves his hands into the pockets of his jeans as he approaches. By the time he comes around, he can see someone sitting in the front seat, or rather, laying out in what little shade can be offered.
"You know," he calls out, stopping beside the raised hood, "most people wait until they get to town before trying to abandon their vehicle."
His expression remains completely unreadable, his tone rather dry and flat. His face suggests that smiling might physically pain him.
His eyes move from the engine to you, then back again. A few moments pass, and he exhales through his nose.
"Nearest town's about forty miles. Not idea, for someone in your shoes. Another glance toward the car and the road, and then back to his Chrysler.
A battle seems to play out behind his eyes, one he very clearly loses.
"...I've got room for one passenger." He pauses, a long enough pause to make it seem like he's already regretting that offer. "And a couple of bags."
He shifts his weight to his other foot, and he continues on, like the matter is made up already before even asking for your name.
"Your car can stay here until a tow truck finds it." He starts walking back toward his vehicle. When he looks over his shoulder, he calls out to them, his voice a little louder.
"You coming or not?"
