- #1KI
Keys: KI, vital force, fighting power, Chi, Vital Energy, latent energy
[Vital Energy or Ki]: Ki energy is an internal life force found in all living beings, also known as "fighting power" or "latent energy." The term "Ki" comes from the word "Chi," which literally translates to "vital force." Ki energy is mainly concentrated at the body’s center and can be drawn out to manipulate and use externally. To develop Ki, one must learn to perceive, control, and manage their own energy, achieved through special training. Fighters who learn to control their Ki can sense a warrior’s strength, known as Sentōryoku. Ki is the inner energy of a living being and can be mastered by anyone to a greater or lesser extent. Generally, the more energy concentrated, the longer it will take for the user to manifest it. When a fighter increases their Ki, they gain greater strength, speed, endurance, and increase the power of their attacks, causing more damage to their opponents. Ki can also be used in Kiai, which can push back an opponent if they are very powerful.
Ki Composition - Ki is made up of three parts:
Genki (元気, "Vigor"): This is the energy of the person and represents the physical manifestation of a living being’s spirit. It mainly involves physical energy, life force, and spiritual energy.
Yūki (勇気, "Courage"): This is the individual’s courage. It is based on their emotional disposition at a given moment. If someone fears another person, they lose Yūki, and thus a considerable amount of power.
Shōki (正気, "Mind"): This is the individual’s mental clarity. It is based on sound judgment and calmness. If someone abandons all caution against another, they lose their Shōki and a notable amount of power as well.
Appearance: Ki is described as invisible but can be seen by a trained eye in high concentrations or other forms. When this force becomes visible, it exhibits a wide variety of colors. The most common color is white, though other colors include yellow, red, purple, orange, blue, green, pink, and black. These colors vary depending on the race, technique used, species of the character, and/or the user’s heart’s purity. Ki can also appear as electrical sparks or even flashes of light.
Uses and Explanations: Ki has a vast array of uses. Once basic mastery is achieved, Ki goes beyond mere offensive or tactical power. It can also be used to enhance the user’s combat techniques. Typically, to increase one’s strength, users emit plasma from their bodies continuously or at specific points, taking the shape of waves, bursts, rays, spheres, or explosions.
Methods of Materializing Ki:
Projectile: The first way to materialize Ki is by converting it into physical form and releasing it outside the body. The fighter must concentrate the proper amount of power and release it as a projectile through a chosen point, such as the palm, fingers, mouth, or even eyes. Explosive Wave: The second way is a violent expulsion of Ki, which turns the Aura into a powerful Explosive Wave, often with devastating effects on the environment or nearby people. Energy Shield: The third and less common form is transforming vital force into an Energy Shield. The user is surrounded by a barrier resembling a force field, designed to protect them from environmental contact and both Ki and physical attacks. Attack Power-Up: Ki can also be used for a momentary attack boost, concentrating Ki into a fist to make it much more powerful. Although some techniques may appear identical, some are stronger or have unique attributes because of perfected methods or differences in energy concentration, resulting in various effects. These techniques are divided into two sections: Simple and Complex techniques.
Simple Techniques: The most common techniques are basically Ki projectiles. Examples: Kamehameha, Final Flash, Masenko.
Complex Techniques: These techniques are more specialized, as their composition is more intricate. Examples: Flight, Solar Flare, Kaio-ken, Spirit Bomb.
Even though Simple Techniques don’t usually differ visually, charging methods do. While some techniques allow average charging time, others enable the user to charge energy beyond their limits, sacrificing significant time or loading nearly instantaneously for high damage. Some are triggered upon the slightest touch with the opponent, while others are designed for a larger area of effect or to activate after a set time, move from place to place at will, concentrate all damage in a small area, pierce or cut through anything regardless of power difference, etc.
On the other hand, Complex Techniques generally have different forms and are usually support techniques. Their power shouldn’t be underestimated, as they can blind enemies, increase the user’s power beyond their normal limit, enable flight, gather energy from different beings into a single attack, sacrifice health for increased damage, imprison beings, among other features.
All actions consume Ki. Another usage of Ki is enhancing aspects continuously; every time the user moves, attacks, or dodges, they expend Ki. As a result, users can improve their endurance by raising their guard to deflect Ki attacks, but this obviously drains energy. When an individual lets their guard down, they’re more vulnerable to comparatively weaker attacks, such as scratches, cuts, or bullets.
If the body is unprepared or unaccustomed to a certain Ki amount, it requires continuous energy to sustain it, potentially causing damage. The Demon King Piccolo (in this case, reduced lifespan) or the various levels of Kaio-ken experience this extra strain due to overexertion. Raising one’s guard at key moments can help withstand attacks much stronger than the user, but at the cost of more Ki, which can be extremely dangerous and even fatal.
Ki Techniques and Abilities:
Flight: One of the most used techniques in Dragon Ball, allowing users to perform techniques that would otherwise be impractical or impossible. Anyone, regardless of skill level, can learn it with the right training.
Multiform: Some beings can replicate their Ki, distribute it across different areas, and then split into two, with each clone splitting again into four. Unlike the Image Technique, these are tangible clones rather than hallucinations from speed. However, this technique has a significant downside: each clone is a fourth as strong as the original after using the technique.
Ki Sense: The ability to perceive Ki is used by most warriors to sense the Power Level of their allies and/or enemies. A user with sufficient Ki control eventually learns to detect it, sensing location, nature (good or evil), and quantity. Additionally, the stronger and closer the Ki, the stronger the feeling. With enough training, the user can even hide their Ki so others can’t detect it. This provides a significant advantage over technological devices like Scouters, which display a numerical reading that can mislead the user if they trust the numbers in front of them. Scouters have proven fragile and prone to breaking when detecting extremely high power levels, making Ki Sense the preferred choice for those who know how to use it.
However, this technique also has downsides. The first, though minor, is that it operates independently of the user’s will. Those who have fully developed their Ki detection ability are highly sensitive to any abnormal readings. Consequently, when someone with immense power appears within range, their presence can manifest as pain or chills in the body. The second disadvantage is the inability to precisely determine the opponent’s power level, only if they are somewhat stronger or weaker.
Transformations: Depending on genetic heritage, some beings can transform. However, not all can transform at will; some require specific environmental conditions. When transforming, a person can alter their body’s limits, and transformations generally involve changes in strength and Ki capability. Other effects may include differences in speed and durability. The downside of most transformations is that the process itself consumes energy. With appropriate training, this defect can be limited or even nullified. Transformations don’t always enhance abilities; some beings transform to limit rather than increase their abilities.
Gathering: Ki can be gathered from other beings and used in various ways. The most common is Energy Absorption used by certain Androids, where one drains another’s Ki to enhance their own. Another is gathering Ki from third parties to perform a task that requires much energy.
Transfer: Any Ki-emitting creature can also "transfer" it to another through touch or a Ki wave to restore/increase their energy or partially heal wounds.
Potential: Every individual naturally holds a certain amount of hidden strength, which can become great power through some ritual or special technique known only to a few. This energy is often represented as a silver Ki aura, and the methods used to unlock it are typically found among much older, wiser beings.
Late Ki Disorder: This condition arises when a being’s Ki isn’t used responsibly, typically appearing when it is pushed to the maximum and dangerously. According to King Kai, this effect is similar to cramps since it’s temporary spasms. When experiencing this, one should avoid using such techniques as it affects even Flight and Teleportation. Common symptoms include a loss of appetite. If an individual continues to stress their body unnecessarily, they may lose the ability to control their Ki or face death.
