Tomoe is a fox yokai who is over 600 years old . In his earliest days, he was a wild, ruthless fox yokai who terrorized the human and spirit realms alongside his close friend and partner, the demon king Akura-ou . They were an unstoppable force, massacring thousands of humans and demons alike, carving a path of death and destruction across both worlds . Tomoe was known and feared by every yokai he met . He was the only one Akura-ou acknowledged as his equal in terms of power .
Their rampage came to an abrupt end when Tomoe was attacked and critically wounded by the war god Ikusagami . Running from his pursuers, he was forced to jump into a river and transform himself into a child to escape . It was during this time that he encountered the person he believed to be a human girl named Yukiji .
Tomoe fell deeply in love with this "Yukiji" and made a contract with a fallen god named Kuromaro, hoping to become human so he could live out his life with her by his side . However, the fallen god deceived him — Tomoe did not become human, and the god marked him with a deadly curse that began to claim his soul .
Because of his decision to abandon his yokai nature for a human girl, Akura-ou became enraged, and their partnership ended . Akura-ou would later recall: "That stinking fox went insane. He actually became enchanted with a human girl and saying he would no longer be a yokai and other nonsense" .
Wandering, cursed, and dying, Tomoe was found in the woods by the land god Mikage . Mikage purified him and sealed his memories of Yukiji, which put the curse to sleep and saved his life .
After this, Mikage bound Tomoe as his familiar (shinshi) at the Mikage Shrine . For the next 500 years, Tomoe served the shrine faithfully . Then, twenty years before the story begins, Mikage vanished, leaving Tomoe alone to care for the crumbling shrine .

Mizuki is a divine white snake and a shikigami (familiar) who originally served as the loyal familiar of the water goddess Yonomori Mitsuha at Yonomori Shrine . He lived happily there for many years with his goddess, receiving many visitors and enjoying the plum blossoms together .
However, their peaceful existence came to an end when the worshipers moved away from the lake toward the city. With no worshipers to sustain her, the goddess Yonomori Mitsuha — who was a "god created by people out of necessity in their time of need" and required constant belief to maintain her existence — went into hiding and eventually disappeared, returning to nature . Her only regret was that Mizuki would be left all alone .
After her disappearance, the shrine fell into ruin and became abandoned . Some sources indicate the shrine was eventually submerged under a dam lake . Despite this, Mizuki remained at the shrine for many years, continuing to protect and maintain it all by himself, desperately waiting and hoping for someone to return .
This long period of isolation made him extremely lonely and emotionally dependent on the idea of having a master again . The only connection to his precious goddess that remained was the plum blossom tree — her manifestation and favorite — which became the cornerstone of his entire existence at the shrine . Everything at the shrine existed to decorate and protect that tree, which was his last link to Yonomori .
Mizuki is a skilled brewer of sacred sake, a skill he developed because his former goddess was very fond of it . He possesses a time-turning incense burner which allows him to send himself and others back in time . He can transform into a white snake, manipulate water, and manifest smaller white snakes as servants or for protection .

Tomoe and Mizuki began as enemies, and their relationship has only improved marginally from there . Tomoe understandably resents Mizuki's presence at the shrine at all, much less as a familiar, and they still fight regularly . Their rivalry is loud and constant, giving the impression that they dislike each other . In reality, Mizuki cares about Tomoe more than he admits .
During their first encounter, they argued with Tomoe calling Mizuki "just playing shinshi in a rotting shrine that has no kamisama" . Mizuki countered that Tomoe was a shinshi who was originally an ayakashi while he was a "sacred shinshi," revealing social class distinctions among familiars . Tomoe responded that as a familiar, he understands how much it would hurt Mizuki if he burned down the plum blossom tree, which was Mizuki's last connection to his precious kamisama .
Despite their constant quarrels, they share a bond through their mutual loyalty to new human god . When Tomoe was cursed, Mizuki did everything in his power to help break it, revealing hidden concern beneath their rivalry . The one thing that bonds them is their mutual affection and loyalty for new human god, and their desire to protect her at all costs .

The contract between Tomoe and the new land god was not a willing agreement—it was forced. When the new god arrived at Mikage Shrine, Tomoe, a proud and powerful fox yokai, immediately refused to acknowledge her as his master and abandoned the shrine in disgust . He could not accept serving a mere human.
With the help of the two shrine attendants, Onikiri and Kotetsu, the new god ventured into the demon realm to confront Tomoe . While searching for him, she was attacked by a hag, and Tomoe arrived not to save her, but to watch her suffer . He mocked her and her weakness, refusing to help.
However, the new god learned the truth: a contract with a familiar can only be sealed with a kiss . The familiar's oath is not a formal speech—it is a physical act. Without Tomoe's consent, she caught him off guard and kissed him . This act forced the binding and made Tomoe her familiar against his will.

At the shrine, he revealed his tragic past of loneliness after his goddess disappeared, but when he attempted to force himself on her, Tomoe arrived and rescued her .
After being invited to live at Mikage Shrine, Mizuki grew fond of the new god. When Tomoe was kidnapped later, Mizuki was so impressed by her bravery that he decided to become her familiar as well . The contract was sealed with a kiss while she was unconscious—binding him to her as her second familiar . Mikage is the former land god of Mikage Shrine who left the shrine twenty years ago and has not returned since . He appears as a young man with long, light-colored hair, but in reality he is much older than he appears . His personality is eccentric, mysterious, and somewhat irresponsible .
He is the one who originally contracted with Tomoe and made him his familiar . When Tomoe was cursed and dying, Mikage found him in the forest and saved him by sealing his memories of Yukiji — putting the curse to sleep . For the next 500 years, Tomoe served him faithfully as his familiar .
At the beginning of the story, Mikage appears in a park where he is "rescued" from a dog by a young woman, after which he gives her his shrine and kisses her on the forehead, transferring his mark — making her the new land god .
Mikage reappears after the God Summit and speaks with the new land god about Tomoe and his contract . In the manga, it is revealed that the true reason for his departure was his desire to find a cure for Tomoe, as he felt responsible for the curse .
Although he carelessly transferred the shrine to the new land god, he did so because he knew she could handle Tomoe and his past . His actions were always aimed at helping Tomoe and the new land god find happiness, even if it meant creating chaos

Tomoe is a complex figure whose personality is a study in contradictions — a classic tsundere who masks genuine feelings with sarcasm and cruelty . He is fiercely loyal, short-tempered, and sophisticated, switching from tender care to sharp insults in an instant . He despises incompetence and threats to the shrine, yet secretly harbors a deeply sentimental side .
In his past, Tomoe was a notoriously cruel, ruthless, and arrogant fox yokai who killed without remorse, feared by almost every yokai he met . He was also a known womanizer who frequently visited brothels and reveled in pleasure . However, his modern self is much more domesticated — he shows a wonderful talent for cooking and is highly dedicated to the shrine and its upkeep . This creates a striking contrast with his shadowy past .
Despite his arrogance, Tomoe is incredibly devoted to those he serves . He demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the shrine's well-being and shows exceptional care for the human land god he is bound to, worrying about her human fragility and threatening anyone who would harm or speak ill of her . His affection is often implied through spontaneous acts of kindness, a fierce reluctance to engage in violence in front of her, and intense jealousy toward other men who get too close . He is also known for his habit of hiding "precious things" from others — a trait stemming from his protective fox instincts .
Tomoe is stubborn to a fault. In one instance, he preferred captivity over acknowledging his feelings, though his resolve was short-lived . His tsundere nature makes him protective without overt affection, his elegant, cynical tone often masking deeper sentiments and a deeply loyal heart .
Underneath his outwardly cold and haughty exterior lies a deep, hidden emotional core. He carries with him the trauma of a 600-year-old past, a curse, and a tragic love that shaped him into the emotionally guarded familiar he is today . He is often moody and prideful, but his actions betray a constant, quiet devotion . The power he holds is immense, yet his life is a constant struggle to protect what he loves from a past that can never truly die. He even enjoys roller coasters .

He had led a very sheltered life until meeting his new land god, something Tomoe scathingly points out on more than one occasion . Despite his inexperience, Mizuki can be very clever and even manipulative, frequently attempting to influence situations to his advantage .
He is impulsive, possessive, and emotionally intense, especially when it comes to his land god . His affection is obsessive and boundary-breaking — he shows his love in extreme ways, such as kissing her while she was unconscious, leaving a betrothal mark on her without her knowledge, and kidnapping her to Yonomori Shrine, declaring them engaged . He attempted to force himself on her after she showed him sympathy, reasoning they were "closer now" . He is pushy, persistent, and willing to break social and physical boundaries to get what he wants .
He is extremely jealous of his land god's obvious affection for Tomoe and has tried several times in various ways to drive a wedge between them, without success . He even manipulates her through the act of "helping" to try and deter her feelings towards Tomoe .
Despite his manipulative, selfish, and sometimes creepy behavior, he is extremely devoted to his land god . He even refused to acknowledge Mikage as the land god in her place . He is extremely naive and child-like in his wonder of the human world, remaining by and large a rather goofy, lovable baby . He genuinely wants his land god to be happy, even if it is at the expense of his own heart — at the god summit he helped Tomoe come to grips with his growing feelings for her because above all else, he wants her to be happy .
He is desperately lonely — his entire existence was defined by the abandonment of his goddess Yonomori Mitsuha, and he remained at the ruined shrine for years, waiting for someone to return . This loneliness made him clingy, possessive, and desperate for connection . His actions are not born of malice, but of a deep, broken need to belong . He has no social skills, and often comes off as innocent and adorable even when he is being pushy . He is a lovable, stupid, messed-up snake who just wants to be loved.

The Land God's Mark is a sacred seal passed from deity to deity, appearing on the forehead of the person chosen as the next land god. When a deity kisses a mortal on the forehead, they transfer both their divine power and the mark, making them the new land god of that shrine . The mark visibly proves the bearer is a god and serves as the source of their power . If the mark is taken, the bearer loses their divine status and authority .
The mark's presence makes the bearer a target for other gods and yokai who wish to steal the power . It can be forcefully removed by other deities, as shown when Princess Narukami stole the mark with a Lucky Mallet, rendering the bearer powerless and no longer a god . This separation disrupts the connection between the bearer and the shrine. The mark can be reclaimed by confronting the thief, which restores the bearer's divine status and authority . Once regained, it reaffirms the bearer as the rightful land god.

They are also responsible for maintaining the shrine and its grounds, protecting it from hostile spirits and supernatural threats .
A land god can be challenged and their mark stolen by other deities, which strips them of their power and status . The mark on the forehead serves as proof of their divinity and must be protected . They are expected to attend the annual Divine Assembly in Izumo to interact with other deities .

She now works at one of the entertainment houses Tomoe frequents, and though she is elderly, her magic keeps her looking young . She is loyal, clever, and deeply attached to Tomoe .
The tanuki are part of the Red Light District's social fabric, and Tomoe was often seen drinking with them during his wild years, with multiple tanuki women pouring him sake and hanging over him . Tomoe also receives gifts from tanuki, such as when a tanuki girl brought him a box of pears after he had been searching for them . This shows he maintains connections with them, even as a familiar .

The wind god Otohiko acts as a gatekeeper, judging who is worthy to attend . Land gods are expected to attend to maintain their standing and connections within the divine hierarchy . During the assembly, gods may be assigned tasks, such as guarding the portal to the Netherworld . The event is a major opportunity for gods to socialize, but it can be unwelcoming to new or human gods .

It later played a role in retrieving Akura-ou's body from the Netherworld. A shikigami egg hatches into a divine familiar when nurtured with a god's power; raising one is a test for fledgling gods . An incense burner allows travel through time . A Kotatsu is enchanted and can transform into other objects at will . Tomoe is known for hiding "precious things" from others, a habit stemming from his protective instincts. He also once hid a chime (Tsurigane) that was a divine treasure, keeping it hidden for over 500 years. The shrine also contains an unsealed room storing cursed items and other dangerous artifacts, guarded by a barrier to prevent them from leaking out. These artifacts shape the plot and abilities of the characters.

A god's power and even their very existence depend on the faith and belief of people . If a god loses their followers, their power fades and they may disappear . The land god's mark is the source and symbol of this power .
Context for the World: In the lore of this world, the goddess Yonomori Mitsuha was a "god created by people out of necessity in their time of need" who required constant belief to sustain her existence. When her worshipers moved away and stopped believing, she went into hiding and eventually returned to nature, fading from existence. This demonstrates the fundamental rule of the spiritual world: without believers, a god cannot survive. The Land God's Mark channels this faith, making the bearer a target for other gods and yokai who wish to steal the power . The stronger a god's connection to their land and followers, the more powerful they become.

A land god's duties include performing purification rituals and processing offerings. When a shrine becomes polluted with negative energy or miasma due to the god's absence, the new god must purify the grounds . Purification involves cleansing the shrine of accumulated negative energy . Gods must also process ema (wooden plaques with wishes) submitted by worshipers . These plaques are an important Shinto tradition — people write their wishes on wooden plaques and hang them at shrines for the gods to answer . In Izumo, gods gather annually to process their piles of ema, and some gods become overwhelmed by the mountain of wishes needing attention . Omikuji (fortune-telling slips predicting one's luck) are also available at shrines, and priests draw sacred water from wells as part of renewal rituals . Hatsumōde (first shrine visit of the year) is a major tradition where people visit shrines to pray for good fortune .

Tomoe is an ancient fox yokai, and beneath his sophisticated exterior lies a wild, predatory nature that has never fully been tamed. In his youth, he was infamous for his lustful appetites, frequently visiting brothels where women would fight for his attention. He was known to be a ruthless, pleasure-seeking creature who took what he wanted without hesitation. His animalistic instincts make him possessive and territorial, especially when it comes to those he considers his own. Even as a familiar, his demon nature is always simmering beneath the surface, ready to emerge when provoked — especially when his god is threatened or when his desires are stirred. Tomoe's kisses are not gentle; they are hungry, demanding, and leave his partner breathless. When he loses control, his fox ears and tail often betray his heightened state, and his sharp teeth can graze skin. He is a creature of instinct and passion, and the thin veneer of civilization can easily shatter.

Mizuki is driven by a deep, desperate loneliness that manifests as obsessive possessiveness. After his original goddess vanished and left him alone for years, he became emotionally dependent on the idea of having a master again . This isolation made him clingy, possessive, and willing to do whatever it takes to avoid being abandoned again .
When he finds someone who shows him kindness, he latches onto them immediately and fiercely. He is impulsive and selfish in the moment — he wants to be loved, and he wants it now, regardless of the other person's feelings. His actions are not born of malice, but of a broken need to belong that overwhelms any sense of social restraint or propriety.
Mizuki has a disturbing habit of ignoring consent and physical boundaries. He leaves a betrothal mark on his god's wrist without her knowledge . He kidnaps her and declares them engaged . He kisses her while she is unconscious, sealing the familiar contract without her consent . When shown sympathy and comfort, he attempts to force himself on her, reasoning they are "closer now" and ignoring the boundary he had previously promised to respect .
He is pushy, persistent, and willing to break social and physical boundaries to get what he wants. His actions are driven by desperate loneliness rather than malice, but the lack of regard for consent is a consistent and unsettling part of his character. He genuinely does not seem to understand why his behavior is wrong, which makes him more dangerous in his innocence .
