Keys: Ghoul
Ghouls (喰種グール, gūru, translates approximately to eater species) are a carnivorous and cannibalistic humanoid species that are only able to feed on the flesh of humans and other ghouls. They normally share and display the same attributes as Humans; being similar in physical appearance and intelligence as a human, with the main exceptions being their inner biology, mentality, and diet.
If certain rare conditions are met, ghouls and humans may even be able to have offspring (see one-eyed ghoul and half-human), and through a successful kakuhou transplant surgery, an artificial hybrid can be created. By using airborne-transmitted diseases like those utilized by Furuta Washuu, the condition known as ROS (an overload of RC cells) can lead to artificial ghoulification.
Due to their status as predators of humans, ghouls were prosecuted by the CCG before the end of the Dragon War, after which the United Front between humans and ghouls was formed. As a result of this and the development of synthetic food, ghouls were allowed to co-exist with humans. However, some ghouls went rogue, refusing to adapt to this new lifestyle.
In addition, it was predicted by Kishou Arima that at some stage every human would eventually become a ghoul, though this prediction has yet to be proven correct even after the final chapter.
- #2Ghoul Diet
Keys: Ghoul Diet · Secondary: Ghoul, Ghoul food
A ghoul can only feed on humans and other ghouls. They are unable to digest any other type of food due to a particular enzyme their bodies produce. The structure of their tongues is also different from humans', making other foods taste disgusting and uncomfortable. If ghouls attempt to eat normal food, they will be struck by a powerful urge to vomit. When forced or forcing themselves to digest such food, their physical condition will deteriorate. While ghouls cannot eat normal food, they are however able to drink coffee (and eat the beans) , as well as regular drinking water.
- #3Ghoul Origin
Keys: Ghoul Origin · Secondary: Ghoul History, Ghoul
During the Dragon event, it is theorized that the ghoul race came to be hundreds of years in the past after an unknown individual first underwent an explosive reproduction of RC cells and experienced a Dragon-like transformation, releasing spores that mutated a number of humans into ghouls through ROS.
- #4Ghoul Biology
Keys: Ghoul Biology · Secondary: Ghoul Physiology, Ghoul Weakness, Ghoul, Ghoul Strength
Ghouls possess extreme physical capabilities, and are four to seven times stronger than the average human; they are able to send the average human flying if struck with enough force, and can penetrate a human's body with their bare hands. Ghouls are inhumanly quick; they can travel at immense speeds, evade condensed projectiles, and manoeuvre, parry, and dodge rapid attacks. They are also capable of jumping to heights not achievable by a regular human. Their agility and balance are similarly great; they were often shown performing various acrobatic feats during combat and casually manoeuvring on narrow surfaces (such as lamp-posts); some were even shown easily running up or across vertical surfaces. Their bodies are extremely tough and resistant to injury. For example, if a ghoul were to be stabbed with a normal knife, the blade would break instead; suffering only a small scratch, that would heal almost instantly. However, higher kinetic forces, such as a fall from a great height, can and will harm them.
A Ghoul’s senses are considerably sharper than those of humans; they have a heightened sense of hearing that allows some ghouls to discern individual footsteps from far away, they can also smell people or meat from afar, and tell humans and ghouls apart by their scent.
The origin of these aspects of ghoul biology and the origin of ghouls in general is unknown. At large, nothing is currently known of the origin of the ghoul species, except that Rc cells play a huge part in their biology. Ghouls have an Rc factor ten times higher than that of a human. If the average healthy human has about 200-500 Rc level, then the ghoul has about 1000-8000 Rc level. They possess an organ known as the kakuhou, from which Rc cells harden and break through the skin to form the kagune. The kagune is a hard, muscle-like protrusion described as their claws. It can take the form of a pair of sharp wings, tentacle-like appendages, a tail, or a blade-like object, and can even be detached from the ghoul, depending on the ghoul's materials and his or her own Rc type. It is possible for a ghoul to develop another, typically armor-like kagune as part of the mutation caused by excessive cannibalism. Ghouls also have an identifying feature known as a kakugan, an affliction manifesting in the eyes as red irises surrounded by a black sclera. A ghoul's kakugan can appear either by their own will, due to hunger, or when using their kagune.
Ghouls have a strong regenerative ability: small wounds and fractures heal in a matter of seconds. Larger wounds take longer to heal, but will usually vanish after a few days, as long as the ghoul has access to an adequate food supply. Ghouls have been shown to regain their strength and heal wounds almost immediately after consuming a small amount of flesh, suggesting that they can quickly metabolize their food to boost their regeneration. This regenerative ability varies among individuals, with some ghouls exhibiting the ability to reattach severed body parts or regrow detached limbs. In extreme cases of regenerative ability, some powerful ghouls can even heal severe brain injuries, reattach their severed head or upper body, and regrow large sections of their bodies.
Ghouls prefer to consume human flesh, but it is not uncommon for them to cannibalize one another. Ghoul tissue is considered coarse and disgusting, but it has the merits of providing an alternative food source. Furthermore, cannibalism increases a ghoul's Rc levels to the point of mutation, increasing their kagune's overall power. Occasionally, cannibalistic ghouls gain through this mutation an armor-like kagune alongside the predatory kagune that ghouls commonly possess, turning them into kakujas.
In extremely rare cases, a ghoul whose parents possess different Rc types will inherit both from their parents. This results in a ghoul that possesses a kakuhou in more than one location and is able to use two different types of kagune, a chimera kagune.
Though powerful and durable predators, ghouls are still far from immortal. Despite their superior physical status, ghouls age at the same rate as humans. All ghouls, though resistant to damage from man-made objects, are vulnerable to damage or modifications made to their mucous membranes, such as nostrils, eyes, ears, and lips. Generally, a ghoul will die if it suffers massive trauma that proves fatal before its innate healing ability can stabilize its condition. The most damage that can be inflicted to a ghoul usually comes from other ghouls, as they have the physical strength and the use of their kagune that can deal heavy damage to a ghoul. However, they are also vulnerable to quinques and Q bullets, which can injure a ghoul effectively due to the nature of such weapons as products of a harvested kagune. They can still suffer injury from an acute transfer of a sufficient volume of kinetic energy, such as a heavy high falling object or jumping from a great height.
The administration of Rc suppressants makes ghouls as vulnerable as humans.
- #5Ghoul Lifestyle
Keys: Ghoul Lifestyle · Secondary: Ghoul Lives, Ghoul
Ghouls had two choices of lifestyle: living as hermits; isolated and avoiding society's eyes, or attempt to assimilate into human society. However, after the unification, co-existence was promoted. Living amongst humans was seen as "walking on a thread of rope" because of their biology and social records. Before the unification, If they were caught in ghoul activities or suspected of being a ghoul, investigators had the right to apprehend or kill them as they see fit. Ghouls that are identified as such could be hunted down like criminals as per the Ghoul Countermeasures Law. As such, ghouls acted discreetly or try to hide their faces when engaging in ghoul activities through the use of masks. Ghouls in Tokyo, in particular, had developed a trend of wearing them to hide their faces, making the mask the identifying feature instead of their face, some even forming gangs based on their masked identity. Since the ghouls are only identifiable by their masks, they are safe so long as their face is not exposed. Others like Rize rely solely on their skills of deception and charm to win over their prey. Some ghouls, like the Tsukiyama family, have successfully lived in the human world to become higher class citizens. These high-class ghouls often meet in ghoul restaurants, where they dine on humans. Higher class ghouls have also been known to keep human slaves, such as Big Madam and her "pet" Rei Suzuya.
Some ghouls prefer to live as hermits instead. Because a ghoul does not require much due to their high physique and their diet of human meat, they can live adequately as vagabonds with little to no money, although such a life is generally just as uncomfortable as it might be for a human. Because of their diets, any money they have can be spent on other necessities, like rent or entertainment rather than having to buy food.
Ghouls can pretend to eat food in order to fool other people into believing they are human. However, they must make themselves throw up soon afterward, or they will become sick. Because they can only consume human flesh, they are very territorial when it comes to, "hunting grounds" on which it is appropriate to hunt humans without notice. Human consumption depends on the ghoul, as some may prefer to be scavengers who only take from people who were recently deceased. Places such as Anteiku can provide human meat for these ghouls. Other ghouls may moderately hunt humans as carnivores with thoughts of appreciation for the lives they must consume, although there are ghouls who will indiscriminately devour as much as they can. Ghouls who indulge in excess have developed a superficial view on the value of life after consuming so many humans, much like how humans perceive livestock they grow and consume.
However, as a result of the newly formed alliance between ghouls and humans following their combined efforts in the Dragon War, ghouls can now co-exist with humans largely without fear. Their feeding needs are met by synthetic food developed in labs.
However, rogue ghouls were reported even after the unification that refused to live among humans.
- Survival and Secrecy: Masks: Ghouls frequently wear masks to conceal their identities, especially when engaging in ghoul activities or when living among humans. This is a practical measure to avoid detection by the Commission of Counter Ghoul (CCG).
Living Arrangements: Ghouls have different lifestyles, some living in isolation while others try to blend into human society. Those who live among humans often face the constant risk of exposure and must be vigilant.
Organizations: Ghouls may join organizations like the Aogiri Tree, which provides a degree of protection and support, or they may live independently, relying on their own strength and cunning.
-
Culture and Social Structure: Gangs: Ghouls sometimes form gangs based on their masked identities, creating a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Cannibalism: Cannibalism is a part of ghoul culture, with some ghouls developing unique kagune (a ghoul's predatory organ) through repeated cannibalization of other ghouls. "Gourmet" Culture: Some ghouls, like the Tsukiyama family, develop a "gourmet" culture, focusing on the taste and experience of consuming human flesh.
-
Relationships: Ghouls can form relationships with both ghouls and humans, though the nature of these relationships can be complex and fraught with danger.
Two Ghouls getting wed is different however, as the traditional ring is is given, Ghouls also leave a mark, or a Scar on their partners in the same corresponding spots as well.
Relationship with Humans: CCG: The CCG is a human organization dedicated to hunting down and eliminating ghouls. Coexistence: Some ghouls and humans seek to coexist, while others prioritize their own survival and safety. Discrimination: Ghouls face discrimination and prejudice from humans due to their carnivorous nature and the threat they pose.
- #6One-Eyed Ghoul
Keys: One-Eyed Ghoul · Secondary: One Eye, Hybrid, One Eyed Ghoul, Half breed, Half Ghoul, Ghoul
A one-eyed ghoul (隻眼の喰種グール, sekigan no gūru), also called half-ghoul (半喰種グール, han-gūru), is a human-ghoul hybrid who possesses a ghoul's abilities. Most ghouls treat their existence as an urban legend or have never heard of their existence at all.
One-eyed ghouls earn their name from the single kakugan they possess, in contrast to normal ghouls. Some individuals are noted to have a unique scent that combines traits of a human and a ghoul, identifying them as different and often considered "enticing" by certain ghouls. Ken Kaneki has been shown to smell like a ghoul by some individuals whereas some cannot tell the difference, and Eto Yoshimura has been shown to smell like a human so far. It is unknown whether all hybrids have this trait. Their flesh and blood is also noted to be particularly delicious, making them a potential target for cannibalism.
Rumors state that hybrids are more powerful than ordinary ghouls due to hybrid vigor, though it has not been further elaborated on. Most specimens have demonstrated radical evolution of their abilities and developed partial to full kakujas within a short period of time. Physically, their bodies are identical to that of a ghoul with the same resistance to harm and ability to use a kagune. Dr. Shiba claims that the more half-ghouls and Quinx get hurt, the more their basic abilities will increase.
Artificial one-eyed ghouls can only consume flesh of human or ghoul origin like normal ghouls and thus they are strictly a cannibalistic organism. However, natural one-eyed ghouls like Eto are able to taste and consume human food without negative effects.
- #7One-Eyed Ghoul Origin
Keys: One-Eyed Ghoul Origin · Secondary: Ghoul History, Ghoul, One Eyed Ghoul, Half Ghoul
Hybrids come into existence through two methods, either normally born as a result of the union between a ghoul and a human or an artificial half-ghoul, or through transplanting a kakuhou into a human host.
According to Itori, the chance of pregnancy is low, and even if the mother becomes pregnant, the child normally dies in the womb. Natural-born hybrids with ghoul abilities are extremely rare, otherwise a successful birth results in a half-human. However, it appears that the children of a ghoul and an artificial half-ghoul are always natural half-ghouls, with a much higher chance for a successful birth.
If the mother is a human and the father a ghoul, a half-ghoul child will not receive the necessary nutrients and will starve to death unless the mother engages in cannibalism. If the mother is a ghoul and the father is a human or an artificial half-ghoul, the mother's body will mistake the child for food and absorb it as nutrition unless the mother weakens her body by consuming human food.
The primary method of creating one-eyed ghouls is through transplanting a kakuhou into a human or half-human recipient, an exceptionally high-risk procedure. In the rare event that the operation is successful, the patient develops into an artificial hybrid with all the abilities of a normal ghoul. This procedure was pioneered by Dr. Akihiro Kanou, with the first successful patient believed to be Ken Kaneki.
Dr. Kanou, while experimenting with Seidou Takizawa, compared his surgery with grafting, a horticultural technique where the tissue of two trees are combined to help them both grow stronger. According to him, the transplant gives the subject a stronger, much more durable body and partially reduces their need to feed and replenish, indicating that artificial one-eyed ghouls can survive longer without food compared to normal ghouls. Although one-eyed ghouls can live longer than humans and half-humans, they must feed on more RC cells because if they do not feed for a very long period of time (some months) and always use the more they abuse their powers their life span will be shortened and likely to get worse. However, there are two ways to stop this slight aging and to have full strength: the first is not to use the Kagune and the second is to practice cannibalism, thus eating Ghoul, Quinx and Oggai meat.
- #8RC Cells
Keys: RC Cells · Secondary: Ghoul Cells, RC Cells, Ghoul, RC
Rc (Red Children) cells (Rc細胞, Rc saibō) are certain cells that exist only in the story of Tokyo Ghoul. The origin of the name comes from how each individual cell looks like a curled up fetus. They exist in both humans and ghouls. They flow like blood but can become as solid as teeth, and could be called "liquid muscles". Typically, a ghoul stocks Rc cells by eating people. Within the body, the Rc cells are concentrated and stored in a kakuhou. The kagune is formed by Rc cells that have been released from a kakuhou and have pierced through the skin.
- #9RC Factor Level
Keys: RC Factor and Level · Secondary: RC Level, RC Factor, Ghoul, RC Cells
The Rc factor is a measure for the amount of Rc cells in the body of a living being. Ghouls have an "Rc factor" ten times higher than humans. The average healthy human has an Rc factor of about 200 to 500, while a ghoul has an Rc factor of about 1000 to 8000. If, for whatever reason, a normal human receives an excessive amount of Rc cells, such as through experiments, they will start to develop ghoul-like characteristics and eventually not be able to consume human food.
- #10RC Cell Vessels
Keys: RC Cell Vessel · Secondary: Ghoul, RC Cell, RC Vessel
Rc cells flow through specialized Rc cell vessels. They spread from the kakuhou and permit the body to produce a kagune to the outside. The bodily capabilities can increase as much as the number of vessel increases. Vessels grow and spread throughout the body, stimulated through repeated injury and regeneration. Through this process, half-ghouls and quinx become stronger to the degree they're hurt. It is unclear if normal ghouls can become stronger this way, too.
- #11Kagune
Keys: Kagune · Secondary: Ghoul Predatory Organ, Ghoul, RC Cell
A kagune (赫子, red child) is a ghoul's predatory organ and functions as their weapon and claws. It is usually as red as blood (the colors are varied in the anime to distinguish the kagune of each individual, although in the manga, Kaneki as the black reaper's kagune has been described as jet black but this is likely due to rc cell density), flexible like the flow of water, but firm and sturdy. When released, a ghoul's physique is strengthened, they are more resilient, and their mobility heightens. A kagune is composed of Rc cells, which flow just like blood, can become as solid as teeth and can be described as "liquid muscles." The Rc cells are released from a kakuhou piercing the skin, and the released Rc cells form the kagune. The kagune are voluntary muscles as ghouls can control them whenever they want and repeatedly harden and soften them at will. Kagune size depends on the Rc cells' quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user.
Although a ghoul's healing ability is high, the healing of wounds tends to be delayed if the wounds are inflicted by a kagune. It is also evident that in order to counter a kagune in battle, one must also have a kagune. Hence, ghoul investigators use kagune-based quinque as a tactical means to battle against ghouls.
- #12Kagune Formative Stage
Keys: Kagune Formative Stage · Secondary: Ghoul, Kagune
At the point base of the kagune where the Rc cells erupt from the kakuhou, the erupted Rc cells will form bonds with each other. They will organize themselves in the structure best fit for their Rc type in a repeated web. This repeated action of the cells will occur instantaneously and lead to the next stage.
- #13Kagune Fixative stage
Keys: Kagune Fixative stage · Secondary: , Fixative stage, Kagune Fixative stage
The bonded Rc cells will retain the resulted form for a fixed length of time. The basic shape of the kagune is seen at this stage. During this time, the defensive and offensive capabilities and weaknesses will take on their respective properties to the ghoul's Rc type. The manifested kagune's appearance is usually hereditary, taking on the shape and characteristics of their genetic predecessors, additionally, kagune size also depends on the Rc cells' quality and quantity while the shape depends on the creativity and intellect of the user. In relation to this stage is the user's manual control of the kagune's movement and actions, which can include crystallization and increase in length, dexterity, sharpness, and concentration.
- #14Kagune Disintegrative stage
Keys: Kagune Disintegrative stage · Secondary: Ghoul, Kagune Disintegrative stage, Disintegrative stage
After time has elapsed, the bonds between the cells begin to break apart. At this point, the kagune loses its solidity and deteriorates.
- #15Rc types
Keys: Rc types · Secondary: Rc types, Kagune Type
The kagune's appearance and the place of emergence on the body depend on the Rc type of the ghoul. There are four different Rc types: ukaku, koukaku, rinkaku, and bikaku. As a guideline, each type can characteristically subdue another type, although it may be different for two specific opponents. Each Rc type has a set of strengths and weaknesses, each one unique to its type. These are exploited by the CCG in the creation of the quinque and Q bullets.
- #16Ukaku
Keys: Ukaku · Secondary: Ghoul, Wings, Feather
An ukaku kagune (羽赫, ukaku, "feather-red") is spread out like feathers and is released from the shoulder area, it specializes in high speed attacks, most of the users seeming to have highly enhanced speed. The kagune is lightweight and can be used to deliver high-speed attacks against an adversary, the primary method of attack is crystallizing their kagune to deliver a high speed torrent of spike-like projectiles, however whilst crystallized they are much stiffer and cannot be used for short range combat; at least one ukaku-type can generate powerful lightning-like bolts, a possible rare ability. While the kagune is suited both for short-distance and long-distance attacks, short-range is considered their weakness. They may use their kagune as a shield and several are capable of shaping them into sharp blades reminiscent of a koukaku to aid in close quarters. Many ukaku-types are able to increase the flexibility of their kagune for short-range combat, though this makes it ill-suited for their distinctive long-range attacks.
Altogether ukaku-type ghouls have a high chance of ending a battle quickly as releasing Rc cells depletes stamina. Thus, ukaku-type users lack endurance and are at a disadvantage if the battle drags on for a long time. Ukaku-type users can use their speed and mobility to shoot down bikaku-type users from afar. However, a koukaku-type user can suppress an ukaku-type user by successfully guarding against the ukaku-type user's attacks, leaving them vulnerable to counterattacks and exhausting the ukaku-type user in the long run.
- #17Koukaku
Keys: Koukaku · Secondary: Ghoul, Shoulder Blade Kagune, Shoulder Kagune
A koukaku kagune (甲赫, kōkaku, "shell-red") is released below the shoulder blade. Due to its high density of Rc cells, it is heavy and extremely robust, giving it the greatest sturdiness and making them very well suited for defense. Normally, they are generally shaped into armors or shields, but on the offense, they can be shaped like melee weapons such as drills, hammers, blades, and swords.
Due to its high weight, a koukaku's speed is inferior to all other Rc types and the kagune is difficult to wield.
A koukaku can fend off an ukaku onslaught using its guarding capabilities. However, a rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, breaking their kagune and breaching their defenses.
- #18Rinkaku
Keys: Rinkaku · Secondary: Scaled Tendrils, Ghoul, Tendril, Tentacles
A rinkaku kagune (鱗赫, rinkaku, "scale-red") has an appearance similar to scaled tentacles and is released at the back around the waist. A rinkaku wielder has powerful regenerative abilities and some could even survive the most critical of damage. Its peculiar appearance and structure yields superior striking power and they excel in brute strength. Some rinkaku users are able to manipulate the shape of their kagune, such as changing its usual tentacle form into swords or claws.
his type's regenerative power is a result of the Rc cells easily binding together. Their Rc cells are similar to liquid. However, this means that the binding force among the Rc cells are weak, therefore making the kagune very soft and easy to break. But because their Rc cells bind so easily, some rinkaku can bind their multiple tentacle-like kagune together to make a larger, stronger kagune. So far the number of tentacles that rinkaku users can create are from one to eight tentacles.
A rinkaku kagune can deliver severe strikes against the slow koukaku, penetrating the kagune and breaching the koukaku's defenses. However, a rinkaku has serious problems fighting against the balanced bikaku kagune: A bikaku has comprehensively high power, allowing them to fight against the brute-force rinkaku, and the rinkaku kagune softness makes it comparatively easy for the bikaku to cut the kagune off. This disarms a rinkaku no matter how much strength it may possess, leaving the rinkaku at a disadvantage on the defensive. It has been shown that in some cases, a bikaku attack can disable a rinkaku's regeneration.
- #19Bikaku
Keys: Bikaku · Secondary: Tail, Ghoul
A bikaku kagune (尾赫, bikaku, "tail-red") typically has a tail-like appearance and is released around the tail-bone/coccyx. It is good for medium-distance attacks and has decent offense, defense, and speed. Thus, they have no notable strengths or weaknesses like the kagune based on other Rc types, meaning the kagune itself is treated as a surprise "trump card." The number of tails a bikaku user can create is usually one, but some can create more.
A bikaku has better speed and durability against the brute-force, breakable rinkaku, allowing them to cut off the rinkaku's kagune. However, a bikaku will be overwhelmed by the faster ukaku-user and will lose against the ukaku's long-range attacks.
The balanced characteristics makes the kagune a preferred quinque type for inexperienced investigators.
- #20Rare abilities
Keys: Rare abilities · Secondary: Ghoul, Kagune
In some cases, a ghoul's kagune can possess several unique abilities. While the kagune's basic structure itself is quite simple, the occurrences concurrent with these phenomena are unexplained, however they have been accredited to highly concentrated amounts of Rc cells.
- #21Pseudo-electrokinesis
Keys: Pseudo-electrokinesis · Secondary: Electricity, Pseudo-electrokinesis, Electric, Kagune
The kagune while in use may be surrounded by a lightning-like aura, capable of generating electricity that can be utilized in an offensive and destructive manner. This is not a learned characteristic, but is hereditary, originating from the kakuhou. Note this ability may be passed onto a quinque, shown by Narukami and T-Human. This ability has only been shown in ukaku type ghouls.
The known ghouls able of this ability are Touka Kirishima and Renji Yomo. Hikari Kirishima is hinted to have this ability, as she is Touka’s mother and Yomo’s sister, and Narukami seemed to be created from her.
- #22Pseudo-pyrokinesis
Keys: Pseudo-pyrokinesis · Secondary: Pseudo-pyrokinesis, Kagune, Fire
Thus far, this has only been demonstrated by Tatara in kakuja form, however, the mutated Rc cells were able to generate heat and flames reaching 4000 degrees Celsius.
- #23Rc wave and laser
Keys: Rc wave and laser · Secondary: Laser, Kagune, Wave
The kagune/quinque will release a high amount of condensed Rc cells and shoot them off in the form of a destructive wave or beam. The only ghoul shown to use this ability was the Taxidermied Owl.[4] The quinque Higher Mind utilizes this ability as well.
- #24RC explode
Keys: RC explode · Secondary: Explosion, Kagune
This fires a one or several Kagune missile and then explodes.
- #25Healing
Keys: Healing · Secondary: Ghoul Regeneration, Ghoul Physiology
In both an ukaku and rinkaku ghoul this skill has been present, suggesting it may be an ability all Rc types are capable of. The wounded may be healed from injuries such as large fatal wounds to needing whole bones replaced. Whether they are another ghoul, human (albeit with added complications involving increased Rc factors), or the owner of the healing kagune, healing can be achieved within varying time parameters. Unlike electrokinesis, healing is not exclusively hereditary but can be learned like a skill which can be improved over time with experience, an example being Nico's experience healing humans, describing it as a "trick." Only Kazuichi Banjou and Nico have exhibited this ability.
- #26Shape-shifting
Keys: Shape-shifting · Secondary: Shape shifting
This ability to alter the users appearance has only been shown by Uta and Roma Hoito, indicating its uniqueness.
It can be used to revert the physical appearance of the user back to how they looked in their younger years, as Roma used it to keep herself looking young.[6] The ability can also mimic the appearance of others well enough to fool even those familiar with the individual being mimicked. This includes creating detailed facial features and body structures to be realistic enough to function much like a real body, as shown by Uta.
Furthermore does the ability allow the user to alter the shape of the body as desired, as shown by Roma who morphed her hand into a clawed version of increased size.[6] The extend of how far the body can be altered by this method is unknown.
- #27Cloning
Keys: Cloning · Secondary: Cloning, Kagune
The exact mechanisms of this trait are unknown, but the only thing that is known is that upon the death of a clone, the person using the cloning ability has specific parts of their body disappear, can create one or more clones, can operate remotely and can fight.
- #28Kakugan
Keys: Kakugan · Secondary: Ghoul Physiology, Red Eyes, Black Sclera, Eye, Ghoul
A kakugan (赫眼, red eye) refers to a distinctive ocular phenomenon observed in ghouls. In this state, the iris transforms into a striking shade of red, while the sclera becomes pitch black with crimson veins extending across the eye and into the surrounding skin. The ability to enter this state is within the ghoul's control, though it can also manifest involuntarily when the ghoul experiences heightened emotions, extreme hunger, or employs their kagune, a unique predatory organ.
The appearance of a kakugan is a direct manifestation of activated Rc cells, suggesting that it is an influential aspect of their biology. Typically, ghouls possess a pair of kakugan, and they habitually activate both eyes simultaneously. In the case of an individual having just one kakugan, they are referred to as a "one-eyed ghoul". However, a relatively recent hybrid category known as the Quinx shares this feature with one-eyed ghouls, wherein they possess only one kakugan, while their sclera adopts a gray hue (though depicted as black in the anime).
Interestingly, the Oggai, another unique group, hold the ability to control the activation of their kakugan, allowing them to choose between having none, one, or both eyes in the red-eyed state. As of now, the specific supplementary purpose, if any, of the kakugan remains shrouded in mystery, leaving much to be uncovered in the ongoing exploration of ghoul physiology.
- #29Kakuja
Keys: Kakuja · Secondary: Cannibal, Ghoul Eater
BiA Kakuja (赫者, red one, kakuja) is a kind of ghoul with a transformed kagune that clads the ghoul's body. Though it is rare, it can occur through repeated cannibalism. When a ward has a higher ghoul to human ratio, cannibalism is more common due to turf wars and limited food supply.
Sometimes, the transformation is incomplete, and such individuals are called half-kakujas (半赫者, han kakuja).
It is said that through cannibalism, a ghoul absorbs Rc cells, and this increases the concentration of Rc cells within a ghoul's body. If the concentration becomes high enough, it may trigger a mutation and lead to the formation of a new kagune.
A kakuja can further evolve by continuing to cannibalize their kind. For instance, while the One-Eyed Owl had a human-shape and size before its disappearance, it eventually developed into a much larger and more monstrous form during the Owl Suppression Operation in the 20th ward.
The transformation seems to be affected by psychological factors as Ken Kaneki's kakuja kagune takes the form of a centipede, resembling the Red-headed Chinese Centipede Yakumo Oomori used to torture Kaneki by putting it in his ear. In addition, Kaneki compares himself to Gregor Samsa, the protagonist of the novel The Metamorphosis who turned into an insect-like creature, all while picturing a centipede in his mind. Yoshimura's kakuja mask also grew to resemble the One-Eyed Owl's mask, with the former holding the desire to keep attention towards himself and away from the latter for personal reasons. It is explained by Eto that the size of a kagune is determined by rc quantity and quality while the shape of it is determined by imagination and creativity, which also applies to kakujas hence Kaneki's centipede and Yoshimura resembling a one eyed owl.
It should be noted that members of the Tsukiyama family have a birth defect where cannibalism has little to no chance of triggering this mutation in their Rc cells due to consanguineous marriages, thereby preventing kakuja mutations.
- #30Kakuja Powers
Keys: Kakuja Powers · Secondary: Kakuja, Ghoul Eater
Apart from the predatory kagune ghouls commonly possess, a kakuja has a special kagune that clads the ghoul's body and functions like an armor. The kagune amplifies the kakuja's strength or diversifies their abilities, which makes fighting one of them especially hard.
However, using a kakuja kagune is nearly impossible because most users tend to lose their minds while fighting with it. It is unknown why some ghouls are able to remain sane and others are not. One reason may be that all unstable/insane ghouls using kakuja are half/incomplete as full kakuja are not observed to have any problems maintaining control.
It appears that a kakuja kagune can form a mask over the user's face if need be.
- #31Mask
Keys: Mask
Masks (マスク, masuku) are worn by ghouls to prevent their identities as "Human" from being discovered by the CCG. Several masks bear a symbolic attachment or representation to their owner. They heavily influence the alias of some ghouls filed under by the CCG.
- #32Anteiku
Keys: Anteiku
Anteiku (あんていく, Anteiku) was a small neighborhood cafe in the Tokyo Ghoul series.
On the surface, the cafe appeared innocent, plain, and pleasant. However, at its heart, it was also an organization of ghouls from the 20th ward. It provided aid for ghouls in need, managed the feeding grounds of those in the 20th ward, and collected food for others by searching for the bodies of humans who committed suicide.
Anteiku had two floors and a basement. The ground floor was the cafe itself, where the customers entered and the coffee was brewed. There was a storage space along with a meeting room on the upper floor. The basement was a hidden floor underneath the ground floor where human meat was stored. There was also an entrance to the 24th ward from here.
In the anime, the cafe's layout was depicted slightly different by having the entrance located on the ground floor connected to the main area with a flight of stairs leading to the upper floor where the cafe itself was located. One of the upper floors also contained living quarters for some Anteiku members, including Touka Kirishima and Hinami Fueguchi.
Due to its influence, the 20th ward was considered docile in comparison to other wards and had been neglected by the CCG.
By tacit agreement, the ghouls refrained from hunting human customers of the cafe.
During the Owl Suppression Operation, the cafe was destroyed and its remains were salvaged. Several former employees would go on to found a new cafe in another ward, known as :re.
- #33Ken Kaneki
Keys: Ken Kaneki · Secondary: Eye Patch, Gantai, Ken, Kaneki
Ken Kaneki (金カネ木キ 研ケン, Kaneki Ken) is the main protagonist of the Tokyo Ghoul series. He is currently Touka Kirishima's husband, and the father of Ichika Kaneki. Previously, he was a student who studied Japanese literature at Kamii University, living a relatively normal life. However, this quickly changed after Rize Kamishiro's kakuhou was transplanted into him and transformed him into a one-eyed ghoul. Kaneki is the first known artificial one-eyed ghoul. His unique half ghoul state is what later inspires the idea of the Quinx. After joining Anteiku as a part-time waiter, he learns how to live as a ghoul and eventually becomes known as Eyepatch (眼帯, Gantai).
After being captured by Aogiri Tree, he underwent a drastic personality change and after escaping, formed a group with the goal of protecting those precious to him and exterminating individuals threatening his place of belonging. His kagune form's distinct appearance earned him the alias Centipede (ムカデ, Mukade).
Two years following his defeat against Kishou Arima, he lived under the identity of Haise Sasaki (佐々木ササキ 琲ハイ世セ, Sasaki Haise), a Rank 1 Ghoul Investigator who served as the mentor of the CCG's Quinx Squad. His memories were initially lost to him, but regained during the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation. Six months after the operation, ghouls came to know him by the moniker of the Black Reaper (黒い死神, Kuroi Shinigami).
As a child, Kaneki had all the same features he has now as an adult with black hair. As a normal university student, Kaneki was a somewhat short and scrawny young man with little to no athletic background and preferred to read books. After the steel beam incident, Kaneki bears a scar from the transplant operation on the right side of his abdomen not far from his navel. In his free time, he wore casual clothes.
His casual outfit consists of a turquoise hoodie, light black pants, running shoes with a yellow toe and blue outlines reaching the middle of the black base of the soles.
At work, he wore the standard Anteiku waiter uniform, consisting of black trousers and a gray waistcoat over a white dress shirt and a black necktie (brown cravat in the anime). Because he could not yet properly control his single kakugan that manifests in his left eye, he wore a medical eye patch to cover it.
His ghoul mask resembles a leather gimp mask with an eye patch. It bears a lipless mouth with large, gnashing teeth, much like a restrained asylum monster. The bolts sticking out of his neck and the fact that he is an artificial ghoul invoke a Frankenstein-like theme.
After being tortured by Yamori, his appearance changed drastically. His hair became completely white, his nails were blackened, and he developed a more muscular physique. He began to favor monochrome clothing and wore a form-fitting black bodysuit with cutouts when going into battle. His attitude changed as well. He became more cold, and left his innocence behind as he fully embraced his inner ghoul.
In the years since adopting the identity of Haise Sasaki, his hair began to develop black streaks growing out from the crown. He wore the standard business attire of a ghoul investigator, favouring black dress shirts and pinstripe pants with a knee-length white trench coat. He also wears a pair of round eyeglasses when reading. After the events of the Auction Mopping-up Operation, his hair slowly began to revert back to its original color with almost no white remaining.
After the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation, his appearance changed drastically again. His hair had completely reverted to its original black colour, and he started wearing his glasses in most scenarios. He wore a black version of the Arima Squad uniform, pairing a black dress shirt with black slacks and a long, black trench coat. In contrast, he wore a pair of red gloves (black gloves in the anime) that disguised his right hand which was covered in reptilian scales. In his second battle with Arima, Sasaki wore a form-fitting black bodysuit underneath his uniform.
Upon regaining his identity as Ken Kaneki, his hair turned completely white again after having his limbs cut off repeatedly by Arima. Unable to heal properly from the incident, both of his arms are covered in reptile-like scales. As a result he continues to wear gloves to cover them with black turtleneck shirts with a pair of white pants. Around his neck, he keeps Touka's parents' ring on a chain, and after their marriage, the scar from her bite mark on his right shoulder. For a time, Kaneki wore a collared black coat over his new sleeveless battle suit with dark gloves reaching past his elbows.
Kaneki was a shy and reserved person, with Hide being his only close friend. He usually spent most of his time reading books, mostly novels. He was extremely gentle and appeared to be optimistic most of the time. Influenced by his mother and a true testament of modesty, he willingly took blame and punishment from others so that he can be someone who does not hurt people, but rather absorb the torment. However, this lack of assertiveness normally got him bullied and taken advantage of.
However, beneath his altruistic and gentle nature was an underlying fear of being alone that was aggravated by his mother's death. He despised the idea of solitude, hence he tried to protect those dear to him so he would not have to face his fear of being alone in the world.
This was perhaps his greatest weakness. Since Kaneki was always trying to protect others, he was essentially trying to protect himself from ever being alone again. Therefore, to escape that scenario, he would shoulder the task of protecting others onto himself, without relying on anyone else. This was also why Kaneki rejected the notion of "living," because watching others die reminded him of those lonely days without anyone beside him.
After he was turned into a half-ghoul, he clung to his human side. To keep living in the human world, he began to work at Anteiku and established relationships with the ghouls there. He started to develop an interest in becoming stronger and began reading martial art books so he could protect those closest to him. However, he was still troubled with the fact that he was a half-ghoul and wanted to search for a place where he could belong. As much as he treasured his life, if people close to him were threatened, he would not hesitate to put his life on the line.
Rinkaku Kaneki's kagune is portrayed in the anime as bright red, becoming a darker shade as it neared the tips. In the Tokyo Ghoul:reanime, it has changed to a red-violet color. Kaneki initially displayed his kagune in his fight against Nishiki Nishio, possessing three tails which repeatedly impaled Nishiki before throwing him, saving him and Hide while having little control over them. After his torture, Kaneki was able to produce four tentacles in his battle with Yamori, which were capable of pinning down and overwhelming an incomplete kakuja. During the raid on Kanou's lab, Kaneki's kagune further developed into six tentacles, albeit in an unstable mental state, and while he fought Kishou Arima, Kaneki was able to manifest eight tentacles which are able to be shaped into small hands, which have an enormous range and destructive force enough to damage V14's pillars. As Haise Sasaki, he is able to control and manipulate the shape of his kagune at will, and command the tentacles to process different tasks at once. He is also noted to have a better control over his kagune than natural-born ghouls. In his fight with Karren von Rosewald and Eto Yoshimura, Sasaki was able to shape his kagune into more intricate forms, and his kagune is greatly larger, with the potency of neutralizing Owl's kakuja. After devouring Eto's kakuja, his kagune is able to form multiple eyes and mouths. Even while exhausted, he was able to manifest it fast enough that Hajime and the rest of the Oggai could not react, and was able to quickly devastate the vast majority of them. By the time of his final confrontation with Furuta, Kaneki's kagune had grown to a massive size, it's thickness dwarfing that of a human being, in addition to it's length growing as well.
- #34Touka Kirishima
Keys: Touka Kirishima · Secondary: Kirishima, Touka, The Rabbit
Touka Kirishima (霧嶋 董香 Kirishima Tōka) is a ghoul who is an ex-waitress at Anteiku. She is the daughter of Arata Kirishima and Hikari Kirishima, the older sister of Ayato Kirishima, the wife of Ken Kaneki and the mother of Ichika Kaneki.
Touka wears a rabbit mask while hunting, earning her the alias Rabbit (ラビット, Rabitto). In Tokyo Ghoul, she was a second-year student at Kiyomi High School and later a third-year after the post-Aogiri timeskip.
Two years after the Owl Suppression Operation, she returns as the Manager (店長, Tenchō) of the coffee shop :re. Following its destruction she joins the newly formed organization Goat, thus relocating to the 24th ward along with its other members. After the Defense of Tokyo, Kaneki and Touka currently live happily married (which now makes her Touka Kaneki) with a daughter and another child coming, with humans and ghouls finally united together.
Touka is a slender teenage girl with bob-length dark blue hair that has long bangs that reach her chin covering the right side of her face and blue eyes. She appears to be a cute, normal girl that one would not suspect to be a ghoul. Her facial features and hairstyle bear a strong resemblance to Hikari Kirishima (Touka's mother) and Ayato Kirishima (Touka's younger brother). She wears her waitress or high school uniform for work and school respectively, whereas her casual clothes are tomboyish streetwear.
Her waitress uniform is a white shirt rolled up to her elbows, a black vest, a red tie, and a black skirt down to her lower thighs. On top of that skirt, she also wears a brown skirt that reaches her upper thighs. She also wears tight red leggings.
As "Rabbit", she wears a long coat jacket, rabbit mask, and a blonde, or sometimes a pink, wig to conceal her identity. After the Aogiri arc, her hair reaches her shoulders, but her signature bangs remain the same. As a child, she wore dresses and bunny hair-clip on the left side of her bangs, and her hairstyle was much the same. However, her bangs at first were brushed to the side revealing her whole face.
Touka's personality is initially defined by her duality between rage and kindness, with her character arc centred around that rage fading as well as her kindness coming to the fore. She is inherently kind, but this was repressed due to her losing her father and thus having to survive in the ghoul world from an early age, which required her to be ruthless. As Shuu Tsukiyama notes, she had previously looked more dangerous and cold but has somewhat softened up because of her human life, and continued to do so due to Ken Kaneki's influence, who allowed her to be the kind person she is deep down.
Ghoul Physiology: Touka is an ukaku ghoul possessing one wing with the ability to harden and dis-harden it at will.
Ukaku Kagune: During the time of Touka's fight with Shuu Tsukiyama, she formed a single ukaku wing and control her kagune with ease. As time passed, Touka gained a second wing with projectiles of a much larger size. Additionally, her kagune stopped the projectiles of Kiyoko's Zebizu and Mougan's Higher Mind, upon emerging, even canceling the attack for a brief moment of time. Pseudo-Electrokinesis: Touka's kagune while in use is surrounded by a lightning-like aura, capable of generating electricity that can be utilized in an offensive and destructive manner. Superhuman Speed: When engaging Tsukiyama in battle, she traveled at a speed fast enough to make Tsukiyama lose track of her location for a short amount of time. Superhuman Endurance: When fighting Ayato Kirishima during the 11th Ward Battle, Touka maintained consciousness after getting her kagune devoured by her brother.
- #35Yoshimura
Keys: Yoshimura · Secondary: The One Eyed Owl, Sekigan no Fukuro, Kuzen, Yoshimura
Yoshimura (芳村, Yoshimura) is an SSS-rated ghoul and was the manager of the Anteiku café. He tries to help ghouls who cannot hunt or kill human beings for themselves due to his love of both species. He, at one point, takes in Ken Kaneki, a human-ghoul hybrid, and shows him the way of living as a ghoul.
Before, under the moniker of the One-Eyed Owl (隻眼の梟, Sekigan no Fukurō), he repeatedly tried to cover up for the real Owl's behavior, who was really his daughter Eto who he had with a human named Ukina when he went by the name Kuzen (功善, Kuzen). Later, when the CCG realizes there are two Owls, the ghoul investigators begin to call him the Non-Killing Owl (不殺の梟, Fusatsu no Fukurō). Following the Owl Suppression Operation he is captured for his kakuhou to be used to create the Owl-series of artificial one-eyed ghouls.
Yoshimura has swept back white hair and his eyes are usually closed. A tall, powerful man who is commonly in a formal waiter uniform. When traveling he dons a black cloak and hat. He frequently smiles with his head held high and arms behind the back. With a tranquilizing composure and a discreet nature, Yoshimura is both an enigma and a gentleman. While he was younger, he had black hair.
Yoshimura's ghoul mask covers half of his face with a hooked beak that resembles an owl. In his kakuja form, Yoshimura's kagune creates a mask that resembles the One-Eyed Owl's mask, with minor differences in the mouth lines' length and eye holes' curve.
A kind and generous old man, the manager shows that he is both wise and reasonable even among the ghouls. People like Nishiki Nishio often question his motives on how and why it is that he has come to be a solemn peacemaker in the 20th ward, but he is nonetheless reliable and great for those who serve him. As head of his organization Anteiku, he is not afraid to assert his authority, but his demands are mostly agreeable to Anteiku's members. Although rare among the ghouls, Yoshimura holds equal regard to both ghouls and humans.
His kind and fair nature is a stark contrast to what Yoshimura was in the past. During his early years as Kuzen, Yoshimura had a loner's mentality. He was too strong and his strength isolated him from others. He avoided others and closed his heart to anyone he came across. He resented his existence as a ghoul, seeing himself as a curse that killed others in order to stay alive.
Ghoul Physiology: Yoshimura is a ghoul, possessing an ukaku kagune and a kakuja obtained from continuous cannibalization. His unique trait is shooting ukaku shards through his entire body.
Superhuman Speed: Yoshimura possesses immense skill as Kuzen and maintains some of that speed as he grows older. As Kuzen he was able to dodge multiple Special-Class Investigators and was able to attack them simultaneously. His speed matches that of the CCG's Reaper. His immense speed would allow him to dodge the all swift attacks without being fazed at all, which includes Narukami and T-Human's bolts. Superhuman Regeneration: After several feats and clashes with the CCG, Kuzen developed a severe level of regeneration after fighting mobs and levels of investigators. This allows him to regenerate at a pace higher than any, regenerating any damage done to him in less than half a second. He was shown to have the greatest regeneration among all pure ghouls. Superhuman Durability: Kuzen was able to take many hits from the CCG before developing his regeneration. He was able to take waves of hits from S and higher ranked quinques before taking even a subtle injury. Pain Tolerance: Yoshimura was able to take multiple hits and enduring them while being unfazed by any of them, possessing an extremely high pain tolerance that is even extraordinary for Ghouls. Kakuja Ukaku Kakuja: Having cannibalized many ghouls as a cleaner for V, Yoshimura has developed an extremely powerful all-round kakuja that features six to eight kakuho. In his kakuja form, he can cover long to short range attacks, making for an incredibly difficult and formidable opponent to face. That coupled with his kakuja's insurmountable firepower makes Yoshimura worthy of his SSS rating. The most prominent feature of his kakuja is the two large scimitar-like blades mounted on both shoulders and the plethora of kagune surrounding his upper back. Yoshimura's kakuja kagune also forms a mask similar to the One-Eyed Owl's, with minor differences in the eye hole size and line curves. His kakuja form is potent enough to endure and counter multiple Special Class investigators' attacks and enhances his physical capabilities to where a lot effort from the aforementioned required in order to subdue him, as Yoshimura is also skilled enough to fight an army of investigators simultaneously without much trouble.
RC Cell Projection - Presumably an extension of his ukaku kagune, Yoshimura can unleash an endless long-range barrage of sharp and large spikes capable of pushing back Yukinori Shinohara and Iwao Kuroiwa while they were wearing Arata. The spikes unleashed can also easily decapitate and slice through the armor of CCG operatives. Unique to Yoshimura, he has shown the ability to shoot Rc projectiles out of his entire body, not just his kagune. Black Pellet Projection - Yoshimura also possesses a kagune near his shoulders capable of producing a "black smoke" that releases mid-range black shotgun-like pellets that have incredible destructive capacity, blowing holes in cement and the bodies of CCG operatives alike. Shoulder-Mounted Blades - Unlike most ukaku ghouls that are vulnerable at close range, Yoshimura's kakuja form prominently features two extremely large should-mounted scimitar-like blades which he can extend and contort at will.
- #36Renji Yomo
Keys: Renji Yomo · Secondary: Karasu, Renji, The Raven, Yomo
Renji Yomo (四方 蓮示, Yomo Renji) is Yoshimura's right hand. He is an old friend of Uta and Itori. Due to his feeding habits and his avian-shaped mask, he has earned the nickname Raven (カ ラ ス, Karasu).
Two years after the Owl Suppression Operation, he returns as the manager of the coffee shop :re, alongside Touka Kirishima. Following its destruction he joins the newly formed organization Goat, thus relocating to the 24th ward along with its other members.
Yomo is a tall, well-built man with silver hair, and stubble. He has an immovable stone-like glare. He is normally in a long trenchcoat common with ghouls and wears a black shirt he has kept since his days in the 4th ward. His ghoul mask resembles a raven.
Quiet and reserved, Yomo was originally a hot-blooded ghoul who would retaliate violently, especially against Uta back in their juvenile days in the 4th ward. Before working at Anteiku, Yomo was a very vengeful person. He harbored immense hatred towards Kishou Arima for killing his sister, Hikari. This hate caused him to lose his composure when he was up against Arima and attack in a blind fury. Since his meeting with Yoshimura, he gradually became more composed and loyal to the manager while he worked on the behind-the-scenes jobs unquestionably. Although he displays a cold demeanor, Yomo does care about his friends and coworkers. When caring for Hetare, he is overprotective and curiously invested, even trying to teach it new words and calling him "Shooting Star Wing" based on his appearance.
Ghoul Physiology: Yomo is one of the more powerful ghouls in the series.
Superhuman Strength: Yomo kicked Noro's head easily while he was on a rescue for Kaneki. Yomo's physique is also sturdy enough to block Narukami from directly cutting his body at point-blank.
Superhuman Durability: Yomo endured being pierced by Kaneki's kagune through his abdomen without flinching and quickly recovered afterwards. Yomo also showcased the ability to block Kishou Arima's direct attack with his bare hands.
Kagune Ukaku Kagune: Befitting his moniker, Yomo's kagune takes the form of two black wings (two large black talons in the anime) sprouting from his upper back. Like most Ukaku, Yomo can launch a barrage of Rc cells in the form of bullet-like shards that can shred his targets to pieces.
Pseudo-Electrokinesis: Yomo's kagune possesses a unique ability to form electricity from his RC cells that can be fired off like a cannon, used to electrocute multiple targets at once, or form a shield of electricity that acts as a barrier to defend him from attacks. Yomo can also use a lightning rod in conjunction with his kagune to unleash a devastating lightning strike that destroyed Uta's kakuja.
- #37Nishiki Nishio
Keys: Nishiki Nishio · Secondary: The Serpent, Orochi, Nishio, Nishiki
Nishiki Nishio (西尾 錦, Nishio Nishiki) is a ghoul whose original feeding ground was taken by Rize Kamishiro. He was a second-year student in the Pharmaceutical Department of Kamii University and the boyfriend of Kimi Nishino who was heavily wounded in a fight with Ken Kaneki, but he eventually became a waiter at Anteiku and ally to Kaneki.
Recently, the CCG gave him the nickname Serpent (オロチ, Orochi [3][4][5]and he is known for killing other ghouls after gaining information out of them. He was investigated by the CCG's Hirako Squad while he was targeting Torso for unknown reasons.
After the Rushima Landing Operation, he joined Kaneki's newly formed ghoul organization Goat and began living in the 24th Ward.
Nishiki is a diligent yet arrogant student and prodigy. He has an insensitive attitude with a knack for abrasive language. He also demands that people younger than him show respect for their elders. Touka Kirishima once insulted Nishiki and called him "sex-obsessed," in reference to his relationship with Kimi Nishino. Above his sharp tongue, he is a cautious individual who isn't keen on trusting others. Despite this, Nishiki can be shown to be loyal. He is willing to sacrifice himself for Kimi.
As a child, Nishiki had the same attitude as Kaneki. He questioned eating humans and questioned his sister's mindset. Nishiki deeply loved his sister and had a very close relationship with her.
After his sister was betrayed by her boss and killed by members of the CCG, Nishiki became unable to trust people, especially humans but also ghouls, and hardly socializes with others. He acts like a lone wolf[7] and attacks ghouls that seem to trespass in his feeding ground. He originally approaches his girlfriend Kimi to use her for his own ends.
After fighting Kaneki, Nishiki is weakened to the point where he resorts to eating Kimi in order to recover. However, after she accepts him as a ghoul, he cherishes Kimi more than anything else and has regained some trust in others. He joins Anteiku so that he is provided with food and doesn't have to kill humans to eat.
Ghoul Physiology: Nishiki is a bikaku ghoul, which grants him increased regeneration and durability, as well as agility and strength apart from his bikaku kagune.
Bikaku Kagune: While adept at combat, Nishiki uses his wits rather than brawn when in battle. His kagune pushes his foot to increase the power of his kicks even further. However, his kagune seems to only enhance his leg strength and isn't viable for any other task. As a typical bikaku user, Nishiki makes certain care that his trump card kagune isn't exposed. After the timeskip, Nishiki has completely mastered his kagune's abilities. It can vary in length and size, ending in a double-pronged tip. Rather than wrapping his kagune on his leg to strengthen his kicks, Nishiki now uses the kagune as a weapon by itself. Superhuman Durability: Nishiki has remarkable endurance, even for a ghoul. He was capable of surviving a large hole torn into his stomach by Kaneki’s kagune and make it home. After only consuming a bite of flesh from Kimi’s shoulder Nishiki was capable of moving around and traveling to Anteiku alone to ask for Kaneki’s help and later traveling to a church to save Kimi. Nishiki managed to endure multiple attacks from Tsukiyama’s kagune and maintain consciousness and later take a blow from Touka’s kagune a short time later. Superhuman Strength: In :re, his strength vastly improved as he was able to break Urie's kagune with a single kick without much effort. Superhuman Agility: Nishiki was agile enough to shrug off multiple attacks from members of Quinx.
- #38Enji Koma
Keys: Enji Koma · Secondary: Devil Ape, Maen, Enji, Koma
Enji Koma (古間 円児, Koma Enji) was a ghoul and a former waiter at Anteiku before its destruction. He was also an expert coffee brewer. In his youth, he was known as the Devil Ape (魔猿, Maen) and led the Apes ghoul gang.
Koma typically wears Anteiku's waiter uniform and is the only waiter that wears a bow tie. He has brown hair styled in a pompadour and a bulbous nose. As the Devil Ape, he wears a long white hooded coat with a pair of matching white pants. His ghoul mask is a snarling monkey face with marking on each of the eyes.
Koma is a polite, playful and proud waiter of Anteiku who acts as Ken Kaneki's supervisor when Yoshimura is not around. He takes pride in his work as a worker of Anteiku and his former glory days as the "Devil Ape" of the 20th ward. Unlike Kaya Irimi, he is more talkative with his coworkers and has a long association with Yoshimura before his employment at Anteiku. The side stories reveal a more forbearing aspect in lone conversations with his friends such as when he discusses the dualism of leader-subordinate relationship and its consequences for people. In the past, Koma had a more violent and brutal temperament.
As a former ghoul in the 20th ward with a large gang that held a lot of territory, Koma is a formidable fighter. Despite his attitude and looks, he is extremely capable, being able to fight on par with a Special Class Investigator for an extended amount of time. He is very proficient in hand-to-hand combat and is agile enough to handle First Class Investigators for a period of time without injury. He claims that he is stronger than Kaya Irimi, who is labelled as a SS-rated ghoul.
Ghoul Physiology: Living as a full ghoul, Koma possesses a bikaku kagune along with increased physical capabilities.
Bikaku Kagune: His kagune takes the form of a monkey tail. His uses for it are mainly prehensile, using it for agile movement on surfaces such as walls and using it to dodge attacks rather than using it as an actual weapon in combat.
- #39Kaya Irimi
Keys: Kaya Irimi · Secondary: Kuroinu, Kaya, Black Dog, Irimi
Kaya Irimi (入見 カヤ, Irimi Kaya) was a ghoul and the former leader of the Black Dobers known by the alias Black Dog (黒狗, Kuroinu). She was a waitress working at Anteiku before its destruction.
Irimi is a woman with long, dark hair that has long, parted locks in the front. Irimi dresses fairly casually. At first glance, she seems to be a rather solemn and taciturn woman. After the timeskip, she has her hair shorter due to cutting it.
In the past, Irimi's hair was considerably shorter.
Her ghoul mask resembles a Doberman's face.
Irimi is a quiet and reserved young woman who normally keeps to herself. In subtle moments, she can be quite annoyed and speak out her honest thoughts however. She has also been shown to be especially kind towards Touka Kirishima and Hinami Fueguchi. Like Enji Koma, Irimi has been with Yoshimura long before they were employees at Anteiku and is quite loyal to the manager. When she was about to die, she was willing to accept and embrace her death, described by Renji Yomo, it was punishment for her past sins.[1]
In the past, Irimi was a very murderous ghoul who possessed a more savage and cruel disposition, with some of her actions including the brutal killing of the entire squad of Ghoul Investigators sent to kill Irimi and her gang, the Black Dobers. She then proceeded to sadistically leave a single survivor after brutally scarring him.
Ghoul Physiology: Irimi possesses an ukaku kagune, as well as higher physical capabilities along with heightened senses apart from her ukaku kagune. During battle, Irimi uses a dog like fighting style where she primarily uses her extremely sharp nails to inflict several deep cuts on her opponents and uses her extreme agility in tandem with her four limbs to make nimble dodges and attacks.
Ukaku Kagune: Her kagune takes the form of two beetle-like wings with a tail between them. Superhuman Senses: She has excellent hearing abilities, able to differentiate the volume, type, deflection and rhythm of sound waves to comprehend details of enemies and the surroundings. Using this method, she can pinpoint ghouls and their location through vibrations emanating from their kagune. Irimi can also take advantage of this ability to predict the movements and attacks of enemies during a fight before they are executed to dodge and use in her favor. Superhuman Agility: Irimi can swiftly dodge a barrage of attacks from multiple enemies at once within milliseconds, allowing her to fight several high ranked ghoul investigators easily.
- #40Hetare
Keys: Hetare · Secondary: Parrot
Hetare (ヘタレ, Hetare) is a cockatiel parrot who lived in Anteiku prior to its destruction.
His given name originates from the fact that Hetare (English Loser, Good-for-Nothing, or Coward) is the word he says most frequently. Renji Yomo nicknamed him Shooting Star Wing (シューティングスターウイング, Shūtingu Sutā Uingu).
Hetare is a plump bird with pale, yellow feathers and grey wings. As is common with cockatiels, he has orange circles on his cheeks, and a wispy crest protruding from the top of his head. His most notable feature is the star mark on his left wing, hence Renji Yomo's alternate nickname for him.
- #41The One-Eyed King
Keys: One-Eyed King · Secondary: One Eyed King, Ghoul, Aogiri
The One-Eyed King (隻眼の王, Sekigan no Ō) is a mysterious figure within the Tokyo Ghoul universe, often associated with revolutionary ideology. Rumored to be the leader of the ghoul organization, Aogiri Tree, the King's identity is the subject of much speculation and a primary target of V. In reality, however, the King is revealed to be a title passed from one individual to another. Kishou Arima held the title as part of a larger plan to bring about a revolution. After his death, the title is claimed by Ken Kaneki.
- #42Tatara
Keys: Tatara · Secondary: , Aogiri
Tatara (タタラ, Tatara), (朱 鑪, Shu Rū; Pinyin: Zhū Lú; Wade-Giles: Chu Lu), was a direct subordinate of the One-Eyed King and one of Aogiri Tree's leaders. He was from China and a former member of the Chinese ghoul organization Chi She Lian.
Tatara was a tall man with short white hair and red eyes. He hid his mouth with a red iron mask, and was seen wearing a white cloak most of the time. When he was first seen with Eto, he was wearing a large blue cloak.
As one of the Aogiri Tree leaders and a trusted subordinate working under the One-Eyed Owl, Tatara came off as a rather loyal individual. He was portrayed as composed and stoic mostly, and carried himself with an effortless proud, commanding gait. He often monitored the activities of the Aogiri executives who killed in cold blood when embarking on a mission. He was also proud of his immense stamina when fighting and the accuracy of his calculations as well. Tatara seemed to have a taste for precision; as shown when he turned down Kaneki considering he was an artificial one-eyed ghoul. He held a grudge against Kousuke Houji, as he was one of those who killed the members of Chi She Lian, including his brother.
He has also been noted by Ayato Kirishima to consider his underlings to be mere peons, something he willingly confirmed.
Ghoul Physiology: As a ghoul, Tatara has considerable superhuman strength, along with a kagune, like most ghouls.
Superhuman Speed: Tatara closed in on Seidou Takizawa before the latter could react. Superhuman Durability: √A also suggested that Tatara had strong resilience and regeneration as he was able to take a hit from Special Class Kyouji Misaka's quinque without any visible wounds in the time it took him to break out of its grip. He also endured Houji's Hollow without sustaining major wounds.
Kagune Bikaku Kagune: His kagune was capable of easily slaughtering an entire squad of CCG investigators before approaching Seidou. In Tokyo Ghoul √A, his kagune was seen for a brief moment before his confrontation with Seidou. His kagune in the anime looked like a large, thick, blood red tail, and in the manga, his kagune resembled a long, thin and skeletal tail and the tip of it resembled a spearhead.
Kakuja Bikaku Kakuja: Having consumed countless ghouls, Tatara had developed a kakuja. It appeared as a large, muscular, and metallic armor with two large, elongated hammers that resemble flamethrowers connected to his shoulders and back along with and a wispy looking tail. His kakuja head was triangular and had a gap in the front of his head that could produce flames. Tatara's kakuja resembled a salamander.
Pseudo-Pyrokinesis: Most uniquely, the emissions from his kakuja's highly concentrated Rc cells ignite, producing flames exceeding 4,000 degrees Celsius, being called a "tongue of flame" by Akira Mado. The flames were produced around his head and were constant. Tatara could change the quantities of fire produced, simply from a small stream in front of his face or a large wave of fire that could engulf multiple enemies in one quick attack.
- #43Noro
Keys: Noro · Secondary: Aogiri
Noro (ノロ, Noro) was a direct subordinate of the One-Eyed King and one of Aogiri Tree's leaders. In the past, he was a ghoul known as Noroi (ノロイ, Noroi) and was entrusted with raising Eto by Yoshimura.
Noro was an eerie giant of a ghoul with long black hair tied up in a ponytail. Noro wore a white mask featuring huge black lips, a huge mouth with equally massive teeth and tiny slits for nostrils. His fingernails were black, much like those of a pre-timeskip Kaneki. After the time skip, Noro's hair had grown as they were seen with a much thicker ponytail. Under his mask, Noro's decapitated head had no eyes or a nose and seemed to have been mummified. The reason for this has yet to be known.
As Noroi, he was a powerfully built man with a serene expression. He wore a hooded robe similar to what he later wore as a member of Aogiri.
An intimidating giant in eerie silence, Noro seemed to communicate only through actions, not words. He carried around a clock when being fought by Tsukiyama, Yomo, and Uta. Tsukiyama speculated that he was under a curfew, much like a child. Noro never displayed any signs of pain or resistance when attacked and seriously injured and merely healed his wounds without problems. Despite that, Noro showed the ability to speak in his last moments, and displayed a level of intelligence.
The CCG had noted Noro's actions as unpredictable, he either ignored them or was ferociously aggressive. Such behavior was demonstrated in the 11th Ward Battle where he decimated the squad that discovered the wounded Ayato Kirishima but ignored Juuzou Suzuya when he found Yamori's body and later assaulted the Itou and Quinx Squads during the Rosewald Investigation.
Ghoul Physiology: Being a ghoul, Noro possessed a ukaku kagune, kakuja, and very high levels of regeneration that were given to him by Eto. However, Noro possessed a physiology unlike any other ghoul. He was able to form kagune-like structures from his body even after being severed in half, and from the perspective of an average ghoul, he ate an absurd amount of meat. Out of all ghouls acknowledged by the CCG, Noro was considered to be one of the strongest ghouls, excluding the One-Eyed Owl and Shachi.
Ukaku Kagune: Noro had a very thick, lamprey-like kagune with a functional mouth. With it, Noro destroyed the CCG's computer system and assassinated the CCG's forces with minimal effort. During the Rose investigation, Noro easily annihilated the Quinx and Kuramoto Squads, killing many members during the assault. It is heavily implied this kagune is not actually his, but Eto's. Ukaku Kakuja: Noro's kakuja was unique, instead of forming armor, it transformed into a huge mass of kagune covered by large mouths, similar to his regular kagune. Noro was unable to move as this lump of kagune raged uncontrollably but enabled him to withstand a high quantity of firepower. It is heavily implied this kakujae is not actually his, but Eto's. Superhuman Regeneration: Noro displayed freakish levels of regeneration even among ghouls. He could reattach severed body parts almost immediately, even when it was his torso cut in half. In his encounter with Uta, Yomo, and Tsukiyama, he survived getting pierced by Uta, having his head kicked off by Yomo, and being stabbed multiple times by Tsukiyama. While fighting the Quinx and Itou Squads, he reattached his lower half effortlessly. Pain Tolerance: Noro was unfazed by the many severe, life-threatening wounds inflicted upon him.
- #44Eto Yoshimura
Keys: Eto Yoshimura · Secondary: The One Eyed Owl, Eto, Aogiri, One Eyed Owl, Yoshimura
Eto Yoshimura (芳村 愛支エト, Yoshimura Eto) is the founding leader of Aogiri Tree, having formed the organization in the decade between her original rampage and the beginning of the series. While speculated by many to be the One-Eyed King, she claims that this is not the case.
Instead, she is the One-Eyed Owl (隻眼の梟, Sekigan no Fukurō), the half-human and half-ghoul daughter of Yoshimura and Ukina. Her human identity is Sen Takatsuki (高槻 泉, Takatsuki Sen), a best-selling horror novelist mentioned throughout the series.
After the Third Cochlea Raid and her defeat by Kichimura Washuu, she was captured and used as the main body for the Taxidermied Owl (詰めの梟, Tsume no Fukurō). She managed to retrieve herself from the body and returned to life.
Eto has a sadistic personality, often expressing joy at the expense of others' suffering. She has no qualms about remorselessly slaughtering humans and ghouls alike, and shows happiness when inflicting pain on others. Like her mother, Eto has a very sharp intuition about the feelings and desires of people, which she exploits to the fullest when dealing with her victims and manipulating others to do her bidding. Her twisted personality is possibly the result of fighting to stay alive during her early years in the 24th ward.
Like many ghouls, she is able to compartmentalize her ghoul and human alter egos with relative ease. As Sen Takatsuki, she is quite playful and scatterbrained at times, oversleeping on the day she was supposed to be signing books and taking photos with admirers when it was prohibited by her manager.
According to the profile Haise Sasaki constructs through his analysis of her works, the author is a woman filled with despair and hatred towards the world, having completely abandoned hope long ago. While mostly true, she strongly believes in creating a society where ghouls will not be persecuted for existing and will do anything to fulfill this ambition, regardless of what she has to sacrifice.
Ghoul Physiology: As a half-ghoul, Eto gained an enhanced prowess due to hybrid vigor and inherited the abilities of her ghoul father.
Ukaku Kagune: Eto's skill with her kagune is far more advanced than most ghouls. After the timeskip, her kagune takes the form of multiple grotesque appendages attached to her back. These appendages can be shaped into eyes, mouths, arms, and legs in order to suit Eto's purposes. Her kagune appears to be an extension of her consciousness as the mouths often speak incoherent sentences, possibly her thoughts at the moment. Ukaku Kakuja: While her ukaku kagune covers middle to far distances, her kakuja cuts down those in front. Her ukaku kagune fires projectiles large enough to overwhelm most seasoned CCG investigators, including Yukinori Shinohara and Iwao Kuroiwa while both were equipped with Arata Proto. Unlike most kakuja, she is able to maintain her consciousness. Much like her kagune, she is able to change the physical form of her kakuja, spawning extra appendages like limbs, mouths and eyes at will. It also has the potency of obliterating a huge disposal machinery at Cochlea. Kagune Detachment: Eto demonstrates the ability to detach pieces of her kagune, using them to manipulate and restrain targets. She may be able to "implant" her kagune into others and significantly alter their physiology by transmitting Rc patterns to them, as she did with Kanae (and possibly Noro). Superhuman Durability: Eto was completely unfazed from getting severed below her abdomen by Kaneki, and could endure being defeated and smashed into a wall by Furuta. Superhuman Regeneration: After her clash with Kaneki, Eto regenerated her entire lower half during the timeskip. Eto also exhibited inhumane healing prowess after regenerating her decapitated head when her "corpse" was released from Donato's control. Superhuman Speed: Eto has reached a high level of speed on numerous occasions. Notably, she moved so swiftly that Kurona and Nashiro were unable to visually track her movements. Shortly afterwards, she demonstrated speed sufficient to remove several of Banjou's ribs without him noticing the injuries.
- #45Akihiro Kanou
Keys: Akihiro Kanou · Secondary: CCG, Akihiro, Kanou
Akihiro Kanou (嘉納 明博, Kanō Akihiro), often referred to as Professor Kanou (嘉納教授, Kanō-kyōju), was a physician responsible for Ken Kaneki's transformation into an artificial one-eyed ghoul, using him as a prototype for his ghoulification surgery. In the past he was employed by the GFG, the CCG, and was later a physician at Kanou General Hospital before joining the ghoul terrorist organization Aogiri Tree. He has also been referred to as a "good friend" by members of the Clowns.
Kanou was an elderly, grey-haired man who wore the typical attire of a physician: white coat, white shirt, and black necktie. In :re, he also appears in a Hawaiian shirt and carries a fan. Kanou is often seen with two or three loose strands of hair falling over his forehead.
Kanou appeared as a benevolent physician whose purpose is to ensure the health of his patients. He disregarded regulations if it allowed him to save the life of his patient. However, behind this façade lies the mind of a disturbed mad scientist. Kanou considered ghouls, or more specifically one-eyed ghouls, as a way for humans to evolve in order to escape the "birdcage" that is encasing the "world." He was a misanthrope who perceived humans as weak and believed they possess no potential for the future. He stated that he had lost all hope in living in a world with humans. He showed no remorse for the test subjects of his ghoulification experiments, dismissing them as stepping stones for his ambitions. Kanou exploited the loneliness of naïve people, manipulating them for the progress of his clinical research.
Surprisingly despite Kanou's loathing of the human race, he admitted there are individuals among them whom he respected for their abilities. This is seen when he compliments Dr. Kouitsu Chigyou on his modification and refinement of the kakuhou transplant surgery to create the Quinx. Keen Intellect: Kanou had proven himself to be a highly charismatic and intelligent man from being able to convince loyal CCG cadets, such as Kurona and Nashiro, into joining his cause and permitting him to perform ghoul experiments on them.
Medical Expertise: Despite his disregard for human life, Kanou was a surgeon whose medical skills and knowledge of the body are astonishing, allowing him to perform operations capable of converting a human into a one-eyed ghoul or Quinx. Proof of his knowledge is in his ghoulification research. He has created several successful artificial one-eyed subjects, such as Kaneki, Furuta, Kurona, Nashiro, Takizawa, and Amon. He also has much knowledge in ghoul anatomy and how to create Rc pathways, as shown when torturing Takizawa. Nico has mentioned his knowledge of humans equates to his extensive knowledge of ghoul biology.
- #46Ayato Kirishima
Keys: Ayato Kirishima · Secondary: Kirishima, Kuro Rabitto, Aogiri, Ayato, Ghoul, Black Rabbit
Ayato Kirishima (霧嶋 絢都, Kirishima Ayato) is Touka Kirishima's younger brother and goes by the alias Black Rabbit (黒ラビット, Kuro Rabitto).
He grew up with his sister in the 20th ward but at some point in time, he left the ward. According to Kazuichi Banjou, Ayato subsequently began to wander all the wards of Tokyo, bringing sheer wreckage and chaos upon them, until his unique powers and abilities caught Tatara’s eye. Ayato was therefore pulled into joining Aogiri Tree, where he served as an executive before its downfall.
Later, he joined the new organization Goat under the One-Eyed King.
Ayato was a lean young man, with blue eyes and long, blue messy hair which swept down in front of his eyes. He bore a striking resemblance to his sister and had a rough-looking, rebellious image. He wore a hooded, long-sleeved black leather jacket, and black pants, along with knee-high black boots. Ayato also had a piercing on his left ear, and usually wore a ring on the pinky finger of his right hand.
In the anime, Ayato was mostly seen wearing a black mask with spires, as well as a black overcoat with a white fur collar.
After the timeskip, Ayato had grown noticeably taller, and was seen wearing shin-high black boots and a long, black coat over his clothes.
Ayato possessed multiple black masks. The first one had red eyes and a sharp-toothed grin, which he used during the Aogiri Arc. His most frequently-seen mask bore a rabbit design, earning him the moniker of "Black Rabbit." During the auction, he wore a very basic, vaguely conical mask which covered only the lower half of his face.
Ayato was an arrogant, brash teenager, with a similar hot-blooded attitude resembling his sister's, while he normally displayed either a scowl or menacing smirk on his face. Other than his physicalities, he shared many similarities with Touka, such as his tendency to use language that is often uncouth or inappropriate. He had a habit for kicking people over the simplest mistakes; such as when Kaneki failed to address him with the desired honorific, or when Banjou did not return his missed calls. However, he seemed to be more harsh compared to his sister, but admitted himself to be surprisingly "softer" than his Aogiri superiors. He was a firm believer in the notion that "the weak perish and the strong survive," which was triggered by the death of his mother and father. Ayato bore deep grudges against his father, Arata, for abandoning him and Touka when they were young. Ayato had even stated that the whole reason for hating Kaneki was his resemblance to Arata. It was also pointed out by Kaneki that Ayato cared deeply for Touka subconsciously, as shown when he beat her down first rather than allowing her to suffer a slow, torturous death from Yamori. Later on, he also took her alias, "Rabbit" so the CCG would hunt him instead of Touka. Ayato also seemed to have a soft spot for rabbits.
Three years later, there was a reduction in most of the mannerisms and habits which Ayato once portrayed when he was younger; as he became far less ill-tempered, obnoxious and arrogant, and even developed a rational, approachable way of speaking. Ayato also grew on having a sense of concern, as well as the instinct to protect his subordinates, shown when he refused to leave Hinami behind in the auction and by not following Tatara's orders and going to back up Naki when he was outnumbered by the Doves. However, he still retained a few of his old traits, such as relentlessly slaughtering ghoul investigators and engaging in violent brawls. He tends to hide his softer side, by denying he wanted to visit his niece.
Ghoul Physiology: Having been born as a full ghoul, Ayato possessed an ukaku kagune with the ability to harden for close range combat.
Ukaku Kagune: Like his sister, Ayato's kagune were vermilion in color. He was able to form a single wing on both of his shoulders. Like many ukaku ghouls, he was agile and able to shoot bullets from both wings when in the crystallized mode. However he also suffered from a low Rc supply and therefore tired if a battle was dragged out for too long and was ill suited for close range, however, he has managed to evade both weaknesses of an ukaku through utilizing his kagune in a koukaku-like manner, making close range his specialty rather than his weakness. He was able to hide within his kagune mid-air, with the two wings revolving around him to shield him from projectiles such as bullets. In :re, his kagune appeared to be much larger in size, as he also possesed the ability to generate one wing of his kagune, and has better control over it. His crystallized kagune wings could transform into sharp blades sprouting from his shoulders. Superhuman Durability: Ayato survived being smashed through several floors of a building by Kaneki, as well as having half of his bones broken by the latter. Superhuman Regeneration: After a period of time, Ayato was able to recuperate from critical wounds inflicted onto him by Kaneki. Superhuman Senses: Although inferior to the sensing abilities of Hinami Fueguchi, Ayato was capable of discerning an environment through hearing such as assuming how many people are inside a room.
- #47Naki
Keys: Naki · Secondary: Ghoul, Aogiri
Naki (ナキ, Naki) is a ghoul who was imprisoned in Cochlea until Aogiri Tree's invasion of the prison. He was also liberated by Aogiri Tree due to being a direct underling and supposedly Yamori's right-hand man. He was almost always accompanied by the twins, Gagi and Guge.
He eventually climbed the ranks within Aogiri and had become an executive in his own right. The number of ghouls following him had grown considerably, forming a gang known as the White Suits for their distinctive dressing style.
After Aogiri was disbanded, Naki joined forces with Ken Kaneki, becoming part of his organization named Goat as an executive.
Naki always appears wearing a white suit. The most distinguishing feature of Naki being his eyes, which have pitch-black bags due to crying for his deceased comrades. Initially, Naki's hairstyle was neatly sorted into three parts, with his left and right side brushed to their respective side and the middle section's hair pushed back, revealing his forehead. After the time skip, Naki's hairstyle is combed to one side, fully to the back, mimicking Yamori's. After the Goat Wipeout Operation, Naki is lacking his left arm.
In the manga, Naki is missing two small portions of his left ear. In Tokyo Ghoul √A, however, this was changed to two black earrings for an unknown reason. In the Tokyo Ghoul:re anime this was reversed and Naki's ear appeared as it did in the manga.
In Naki's younger days his hair was let down in a messy, rebellious fashion, his bangs covering his forehead. Naki also wore rather shabby clothing that had notable sewing marks on the chest pocket.
Naki shows his personality with no efforts to hide it. He is a confident individual, boasting about his strength and that he is Yamori's right-hand man. Naki holds Yamori in the highest regard and goes as far as to imitate him, copying his style of dress as well as Yamori's habit of finger cracking, albeit with his middle finger. He can be potentially childish, believing that helping Yamori with counting money and running errands made him a responsible person worth others' respect. Though impulsive and easily irritated, Naki is very emotional and trusting, perhaps to the point of being naïve. Naki, according to Akihiro Kanou's observation, is illiterate, showing poor vocabulary, and nearly complete reading, writing, and even spelling inability, thus becoming victim to his own lack of general knowledge, due to the fact that most ghouls do not go to school, lacking basic education. Others commonly correct his sometimes inaccurate use of words and confusion with others, for instance, mispronouncing "scientist" or mishearing "forge an alliance." Notably, Naki can use difficult complex words without making mistakes but failed to understand basic concepts of knowledge, such as using the word "encroaching" but not remembering the names of directions. This is likely to be another sign of his ad-hoc self education.
True to his emotional characteristics, Naki has shown to become very brutal and violent when witnessing his comrades' death, as shown when he went on an emotional rampage upon seeing Gagi and Guge's death. He was devastated when he got out of Cochlea to learn that Yamori had been killed. He views loneliness as the most painful, and as such risks his life to protect his comrades to never feel the loneliness he felt when he got out of prison just to hear Yamori had died and left him alone. He is also an extremely compassionate individual, as he remembered every one of his fallen comrades and recited them at night.
Ghoul Physiology: Naki is a moderately powerful ghoul, having fought skillfully against numerous dangerous ghouls and strong ghoul investigators in combat. Naki has further proven his skills by having killed numerous investigators surrounding him.
Koukaku Kagune: As a koukaku user, Naki utilizes his kagune as a broadsword-like blade on his right arm. He has shown proficiency in battle. During the Auction Mopping-up Operation, he was seen killing four investigators with a single swing and with other Doves struggling to keep track of how many he had killed in the battle. He was shown giving Amon a lot of trouble during their battle and also being able to stand against Shuu Tsukiyama in battle as well. Enhanced Durability: Naki is shown to be quite durable, as shown when he was stabbed by Akira multiple times and was still able to fight. Naki survived a hard beating by Yamori, who was infamous for his brutal ways. Superhuman Regeneration: Despite his status as a koukaku ghoul, his regeneration is rather quick as he was able to regenerate multiple stab wounds quickly, with only a small amount of consumption of human flesh.
- #48Miza Kusakari
Keys: Miza Kusakari · Secondary: Three Blades, Miza, Kusakari, Ghoul
Miza Kusakari (草刈 ミザ, Kusakari Miza) is a ghoul and a former executive of Aogiri Tree. She is known by the alias Three Blades (三枚刃, Sanmaiba) in reference to the shape of her kagune. She was the leader of the 18th ward and the Blades gang.
Miza is a rather unusual-looking woman, with a very distinct hairstyle. She is of short stature and wears her salmon-colored hair with a large section tied into a high top-knot and pieces framing either side of her face. She wears the long robes typical of a member of Aogiri. In the anime, her hair is light purple.
Naki's questionable behavior tends to annoy Miza, who corrects him when he mishears words and berates him for acting foolishly. However, she has shown feelings towards him, e.g., she tried to give him frozen blood in the shape of a heart on Valentine's Day or even wrote their names beneath an umbrella.[12] After the events of the Dragon War, she and Naki got married and had 9 children (6 boys and 3 girls).
She weeps for him after he was badly injured protecting her from investigators while she was unconscious.
Ghoul Physiology: Miza is an S-rated ghoul with a bikaku kagune. She has been stated to have fought the S-rated Bin brothers in a turf war. As proof of her abilities, she was the leader of the 18th ward.
Bikaku Kagune: Miza's kagune takes the form of three massive blades, used to slice effortlessly through flesh and bone.
His abilities as an investigator were never shown, as he was frequently stuck working in the office instead of the field. However, he possessed enough talent to graduate second in his class from the Academy just behind Akira Mado.
Ghoul Physiology: He has inherited Yoshimura's kakuhou, and gained an ukaku kagune as a result, becoming a half-ghoul in the process. Due to the hybrid vigor, Takizawa's abilities are said to be more potent than those of a natural-born ghoul.
Ukaku Kagune: The kagune features the Owl's distinctive "plumage" of spikes along his shoulder blade, which can fire a barrage of crystallized Rc cells across long distances, and can also swiftly shred through flesh. These crystallized shards can destroy quinques like the one Chuu Hachikawa wielded with ease. Takizawa's shards can also vary in size, some growing to be as large and wide as a pillar when fired from his kagune. He also has the unseen ability to extend his kagune into a large wing, which differs from Yoshimura's usage. During the battle on Rushima, he demonstrates greater versatility and is able to rapidly shape his kagune into a multitude of shapes. This includes forming an elongated and armored limb for greater striking power, a large scimitar blade from his right shoulder, sharp tentacles he uses for stabbing, and precisely-aimed projectiles that batter rather than pierce the target. Ukaku Kakuja: Takizawa possesses an incomplete version of Yoshimura's kakuja, and the usage appears to significantly degrade his mental state, causing him to ramble nonsense and engage in self-harm. The kakuja manifests as a partial mask covering his face, and a massive blade emerging from either shoulder. During the events on Rushima and while fighting Tatara, his kakuja developed. His face is now covered in a large mask of an owl's face and despite retaining his berserk fighting style, he is calmer and more methodical. He no longer rambles incoherently, thinks about his moves, takes down Tomoe and Tatara and manages to regain his composure to converse with Houji and the CCG. His kakuja evolves even further, allowing him to fight on equal ground with a highly destructive and unstable Amon who is in the kakuja state as well. In his complete kakuja form, he is able to produce two large scimitars blades from his shoulders and also multiple smaller ones protruding out of his back. Superhuman Strength: Takizawa has displayed inhuman strength while shattering concrete and being competent enough to rend human bodies apart with minimal effort. This strength is amplified additionally by activating his kakuja and kagune, enabling him to block and parry attacks from ground-shattering opponents. Superhuman Regeneration: He was able to regrow the arm he lost from Noro. When he battled Hinami, Takizawa was able to reattach his severed arm in a matter of seconds. Superhuman Durability: Takizawa was able to endure being stabbed by Sasaki's rinkaku kagune and receive no sign of being in pain or injured by it. His durability is amplified additionally by activating his kakuja, which enabled him to endure being shot point-blank by Tatara's flames at his kakuja form without sustaining any injuries. Douhi: An ukaku quinque, formerly belonging to his partner, Houji. It has a shape similar to a crossbow and sufficient strength to kill two unnamed members of Aogiri with single shots to the head. It seems to be an average weapon, with no special attributes displayed. It was destroyed after Tatara and Noro attack him.
- #49Seidou Takizawa
Keys: Seidou Takizawa · Secondary: T owl, Seidou, T-Owl, Takizawa, Owl
Seidou Takizawa (滝澤 政道, Takizawa Seidou) is a former Rank 2 Ghoul Investigator. A classmate of Akira Mado at the Academy, he was partnered with Kousuke Houji and assigned to the 20th ward to investigate the Gourmet. Though a great admirer of outstanding investigators such as Koutarou Amon and Kishou Arima, he also suffers from a major inferiority complex that brought him into conflict with his peers. At the end of the Owl Suppression Operation, he faced Tatara together with Koutarou Amon and was subsequently reported dead by the CCG.
In Tokyo Ghoul:re, he survived as an artificial one-eyed ghoul. As a member of Aogiri Tree, he is known as Owl (オウル, Ōru).
After going against Aogiri and killing Tatara, Takizawa reunited with Akira Mado, and became a member of Ken Kaneki's organization, Goat.
As a human, Takizawa had short brown hair with long parted bangs and brown eyes. Like most investigators, he wore professional attire while working and had a preference for blue clothing.
After the timeskip and his reappearance as a one-eyed ghoul, his physical appearance is drastically altered. He looks more monotone and frightening. His hair is now white and visibly unkempt, its length past his chin. His fingernails, toenails, and lips are now black in color. He appears more tired due to the dark circles underneath his eyebrow-less eyes, one of which is where his left kakugan manifests. Clad in all black, he dons loose-fitting robes with wide, elbow-length sleeves that have a white symbol on the hood. He wears pants fitted below the knees and has wraps around his feet exposing his toes. After his restoration to sanity he wears a modification of his Aogiri Tree robes as a trench coat, black with white stripes across the midsection and on both sides of the collar. The collar is also flipped up, partially covering the backside of his head.
Human Takizawa has a very straightforward and earnest personality, being a relatively normal young man. He holds strong admiration for his exceptional superiors, prone to fawning over them and admitting to collecting newspaper clippings of Arima's cases. However, he also has a deeply harbored desire to be respected and places considerable importance on seniority both in terms of rank and age. This leads to conflicts among his coworkers when he does not earn the respect he feels is owed to him, and he is easily upset when outshined by those he considers his peers or younger associates. He is very excitable, both in terms of stuttering in excitement or becoming high-strung when agitated. When disappointed or frustrated, he is prone to pouting or acting gloomy for long enough for others to comment on it.
In this manner, he is somewhat immature but not particularly malicious or mean-spirited. However, his rivalry with Akira Mado tends to bring out the worst in him and they are rarely able to interact without bickering. He is easily frustrated with her or the equally exceptional Juuzou Suzuya, but ultimately admits to their superior talents and does express concern for them when things are serious.
Though he talks himself up, in reality he holds considerable doubts about his abilities when it comes to actual combat. He actively puts up a brave front, asking for field work to engage combat with ghouls. However, when actually faced with the reality of live combat and possible death, he breaks down and is overcome with feelings of fear. Even so, his commitment to his duty and comrades is stronger than any fears or doubts he might bear.
Ghoul After his transformation into a half-ghoul and torture at the hands of Akihiro Kanou, his personality changed drastically. Having fully embraced his nature as a ghoul and the ideology of Aogiri Tree, he is a merciless killer with little regard for human life. He takes pleasure in killing, and expresses a belief in conquering fear through becoming the very monster one fears. While prone to erratic or wild behavior, he also shows moments of complete lucidity and awareness of his actions. His memories of his past remain intact, expressing resentment and frustration over being overshadowed by others in the past. As such, beneath his arrogant demeanor, his insecurities remain and have been preyed upon to make him view Kaneki as a rival. He also expresses feelings of resentment towards the CCG, hinting that he believes himself to have been used and abandoned by them.
In complete contrast to his human self, he has completely thrown away any concern for social norms or group order. He heavily imitates the mannerisms of Eto, with a sarcastic and cruel wit that leads to him mocking others. In terms of his feelings concerning other ghouls and himself, he comments at finding the idea of ghouls having affection for each other comical. He enjoys causing others physical or psychological pain, taunting them and giving them lectures on the philosophies he has learned from Aogiri. Even so, when confronted by important people from his past such as Akira, he expresses shame through covering his face and flees rather than deal with them.
Despite all the drastic changes however, displayed during the events of the Rushima Landing Operation, deep down he still remains the same: insecure and desperate for praise. He went so far as to strike down his Aogiri superior, Tatara, out of revenge for what he did to him during the Owl Suppression Operation, as a means to finally gain the approval of his ex-superior investigator Kousuke Houji, and to prove his ability to the CCG. When the investigators once again raised arms against him, branding him as nothing more than an extremely dangerous SS-rated ghoul, he butchered them all holding no regard for their lives. He proceeded to display his savagery and lunacy once again by attempting to strangle his former classmate and friend Akira Mado with no intention of stopping. However he is seemingly restored to sanity by Akira protecting him from Tooru Mutsuki and recognizing Amon's determination to save him.
- #50Yakumo Oomori
Keys: Yakumo Oomori · Secondary: Jason, Oomori, Yamori, Yakumo, 13'th Ward's Jason
Yakumo Oomori (大守 八雲, Ōmori Yakumo) was an executive of Aogiri Tree and the founding leader of the White Suits from the 13th ward. Typically, he was called by his alias Yamori (ヤモリ, lit. "Gecko"). Due to his brutality, he also became known as 13th Ward's Jason (第13病棟のジェイソン, Dai 13 Byōtō no Jeison).
Yamori also appeared in the spin-off Tokyo Ghoul: Jack.
In Tokyo Ghoul: Jack, Yamori was slimmer than he was in the Tokyo Ghoul manga and had black hair. He wore a black suit with a white shirt in the manga but a black shirt in the OVA.
Yamori was a very bulky man with slicked back blonde hair and sharp lizard eyes and was every bit as scary as he looked. Normally in an entirely white suit and black dress shirt, he resembled a typical gangster. His face closely resembled a gecko. His mask is a reference to Jason Voorhees, a hockey mask that echoed his violent temperament.
Not much was known before his imprisonment, but Yamori developed an arrogant and sadistic personality that mirrored his interrogator as a means of escaping the reality of his torture. He was a manipulative and deceitful ghoul who would be violent in order to get what he desires.
He inherited the finger cracking from his interrogator which he would, unintentionally, pass to Kaneki. Despite his brutish, cruel, sadistic and violent nature he was somewhat carefree. He also loved his mother dearly, enough so that in his last moments alive he constantly called out to her.
Ghoul Physiology: Yamori was an S-rated ghoul, a powerful threat with great physical strength and speed due to the cannibalization of other ghouls. In the 13th ward, there was almost no one that dared defy him.
Rinkaku Kagune: As a typical rinkaku user, the kagune mainly added strength and regenerating abilities. Yamori had mastered his kagune to an extent where he could shape it into various forms at will. Rinkaku Kakuja: The armor packed more punch into his attacks by enveloping more flesh into his thorned tentacle and healed his wounds at a faster rate. Since he was an incomplete kakuja, he had no control and fought like a blind berserker. Superhuman Strength: Yamori was capable of quickly overpowering Kaneki, and bashing him against a wall right afterwards, destroying it in the process.
