The Color system of the Society originally was a caste system created by early humans on Earth to create order when first colonizing the Moon. It is also a form of social hierarchy improved upon by the early Golds during their conquering of the Solar System. It divides Humanity into fourteen distinct "Colors."
Originally the "Colors" were native Earth human beings who simply wore colored clothes that denoted their position. After conquering Earth the founding Golds of "The Society" used genetic engineering to cause members of each Color to have hair and eyes to match their caste.
Beyond the coloring, the genetic structure of their bodies was modified to allow them to be more adept at performing their denoted tasks. Examples are Red's (miners) being smaller and squat, Obsidian's (fighters) being large and with 8, 5 or 4 fingers per hand, and Gold's (conquerors and explorers) having bone 5 times stronger than an average man. Every person's vocation is dictated entirely by their Color.
As part of the genetic engineering of the hierarchy, lowColors have significantly shorter pregnancies than pre-Color humans. Labor is induced for lowColors after a maximum of five months of gestation through the use of catalysts, sedatives, or nucleics. Only Golds and Obsidians experience full nine-month pregnancies with natural births.
In addition to the genetic engineering that gives individuals the pigment to match their castes, a certain amount of social engineering exists in an attempt to prevent the desire for social mobility. Obsidians (for example) believe Golds to be literal gods, helping to ensure their loyalty to their masters. While Reds are socially engineered to be heterosexual, family oriented, and marry and breed by age 14-16 in order to maintain and increase their labor population.
While the genetic engineering is fairly perfect, the social engineering is proven time and again to be woefully inadequate. Throughout the novels, there are very few examples of specific low-color individuals who remain loyal to Gold, given a reasonable opportunity to rise against them. Even a surprising number of Golds seem to very-easily abandon the system that has allowed them to live as gods.
HighColors
Golds: Rulers of the society Silvers: Financiers and businessmen Whites: Clergy and judges Coppers: Administrators, lawyers and bureaucrats MidColors Blues: Bridge crew of starships and pilots Yellows: Doctors and researchers Greens: Programmers and technicians Violets: Artisans and other creatives Oranges: Mechanics and engineers Grays: Regular soldiers and police
LowColors
Browns: Servants, cooks, janitors Obsidians: Elite soldiers and bodyguards
Pinks: Pleasure slaves and social functionaries
Reds: Manual laborers and miners
Additionally, most (if not all) colors have some sort of elite class within it. So far only some of these classes have been revealed (as per Iron Gold). These classes are:
Peerless Scarred (Gold): The apex Golds who have completed The Institute above the Graduates and the Shamed. They are held in the highest esteem among Golds.
Justices (White): The monastic Whites who, after spending their life training in a monastery, have become the spirit of justice. They oversee many of the Gold ritual functions.
Carvers (Violet): Violets who are capable of altering and creating life via surgery and genetic engineering. Trained in the Grove, they are given hallucinogenic medication, and then told to carve the things they saw.
Master Makers (Orange): Highly intelligent Oranges who specialize in multiple different fields of engineering.
Lurchers (Gray): These are the elite special forces comprised of highly trained Grays.
Stained (Obsidian): Obsidians who have passed a "Trial of the Stained" and are used as elite body guards and special forces by Golds. Physical specimens, they are bred and trained in the art of killing.
Roses of the Garden (Pink): The rarest and most valuable Pinks, extensively trained in the art of the human body and mind during their tenure in the Garden. Highly expensive and valuable.
highReds (Red): Reds who do not work underground in the mines like the lowReds, but hold the low level positions above ground. They fill positions such as street cleaners, farmers, and janitors.

Derogatory Names Rusters
Reds are a lowColor, and are the lowest caste in the hierarchy of The Society. They are manual laborers conditioned to work in harsh conditions and brutal environments. Because of their position at the bottom of the Society's pyramid and their harsh treatment, Reds make up the bulk of the front-line agents of the Sons of Ares.
Sigil
The design of their sigils are based off of the symbol for Mars (♂) as well as for Iron, relating both to the homes of the Reds as well as referring to their hard nature.
Types of Reds Reds are separated into multiple tiers depending on the location and type of manual labor that they perform.
LowRed
LowReds are unskilled workers who labor in mines to harvest the resources required to terraform worlds and power the infrastructure of The Society. Due to the hazards of their environment, they have a considerably shorter life expectancy than most other colors, to the point where lowReds in their forties are considered elderly.
Because of their shorter life expectancy, lowReds typically marry during their teens, with girls becoming eligible for marriage at fourteen and boys at sixteen.
HighRed HighReds are Reds who labor on the surface and in space. They work in service jobs, similar to Browns, but often more menial labour, such as working in factories to make weapons or consumer goods, laboring in fields on farms, or working as welders and electricians.
Ultraheavy Ultraheavies are Reds bred on The Rim to work in punishing radiation and gravity 2.4 times that of Earth. Their bodies are larger and denser than other Reds, and have shorter lives due to the conditions they work under. They are the rarest type of Red.
Mines
lowReds and Ultraheavies live in mines where they are raised to harvest the resources needed for the Society to function, with different mines focusing on different resources. The most famous lowRed mines are the helium-3 mines beneath the surface of planets of Mars, but there are other mines across the solar system on various planets, moons, and asteroids that each focus on the extraction of different materials, such as the iron mines of southern Helios on Mercury, copper and other metal mines in the asteroid belt, and mining villages are located on the surface of Triton near the moon's polar Lovelock Engines.
Meanwhile, Ultraheavies reside in mining stations that orbit the gas giants of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Known mines include:
Boetia - Mars Casseda - Mars Corinth - Mars Cyros - Mars Cryssos - Triton Cryxos - Mars Faran - Mars Lagalos - Mars Lykos - Mars Karos - Mars Nagasos - Mars Oikos - Mars Thebos - Mars Tyros - Mars Vadros - Mars
Clans
To keep the Reds from uniting against Gold, each mine is divided by the Board of Quality Control into twenty-four clans, each named for a latter of the Greek alphabet. The clans are placed in competition against each other, with the promise of special privileges - such as a greater variety of food, more burners to smoke, quilts, etc. - for the highest performing clan, embodied by the laurel, being used to motivate the clans to continue working.
Across all mines, favoritism is consistently shown to the Gamma clan regardless of the actual totals in order to keep the other clans envious of those they perceive as better off than themselves rather than directing their anger over their conditions at Gold or The Society.
Known clans include:
Alpha Beta Gamma Delta Epsilon Zeta Eta Theta Iota Kappa Lambda Mu Nu Xi Omicron Pi Rho Sigma Tau Upsilon Phi Chi Psi Omega
The Vale The 'heaven' or afterlife the Reds believe in. Their deity figure, the Old Man, is said to to guide them after death. If a Red is buried after death, it is said they will have a shorter journey along the stone path towards the Vale. Reds believe that when they arrive, their loved ones will stand waiting with the Old Man. The Vale is a beautiful green forested world, with morning mists, and cozy homes with stews ready on their hearths. Since Reds typically have harsh, short, pain-filled lives, this pleasant afterlife functions as a peaceful encouragement for Reds and is an important part of their culture.
The Reaper The psychopomp that the Reds believe in, similar to an angel of death and judge of the deceased. The Reaper is commonly depicted as dwelling on the road to the Vale, wielding a scythe to separate the guilty from the innocent.
Culture Reds were socially engineered to be patriarchal. Women were expected to work less grueling tasks, such as harvesting silk, as outlined in the Board of Quality Control's Stratification Protocol. LowReds do not receive clerically logged names - instead, they are given a designation that is a mix of letters and numbers from a Copper administrator (Ex. L17L6363, the designation for Darrow). Mines do seem to bear some cultural differences. Darrow specifies that the inhabitants of Lykos are a people of dance and song. Reds bear a significant cultural resemblance to the Irish, as most of the first Reds were refugees from Ireland after radiation from London turned the British Isles into a wasteland. This heritage is reflected in how Red slang is derived from Irish slang, and how Reds commonly have historically Irish names (Ex. Liam).
The Zither The zither is the folk instrument that the lowReds use for their music. It is a string instrument that is notoriously hard to play, and even harder to produce any sound with other than a mournful one. Most zithers given to lowReds have plastic soundboards and metal strings, with higher quality materials like wood reserved for the winner of the Laurel.
Darrow says in regards to Narol: "He wears the instrument suspended on shoulder straps so that it rests at his hips, with its plastic soundboard and its many taut metal strings facing up toward the ceiling. The right thumb strums the strings, except when the index finger drops down or when the thumb picks single strings, all while the left hand picks out the bass line string by string."
The Reaping Song
A song (and an accompanying dance) from Red culture encouraging rebellion against the Golds. The punishment for performing either is public execution, which only caused the song and dance to become even stronger symbols of mutiny among the Reds despite their remaining fear of the Golds.
The lyrics are as follows:
Listen, listen Remember the wane Of son's Fury and waving grain We fell and fell And danced along To croon a knell Of rights and wrongs
And My son, my son Remember the burn When leaves with fire and seasons turned We fell and fell And sang a song To weave a Cell All autumn long
And Down in the vale Hear the reaper swing, the reaper swing The reaper swing Down in the vale Hear the reaper sing A tale of winter long
My girl, my girl Remember the chill When rains froze and snows did kill We fell and fell And danced along Through icy hell To their winter song
My love, my love Remember the cries When winter died for spring skies They roared and roared But we grabbed our seed And sowed a song Against their greed
My son, my son Remember the chains When gold ruled with iron reins We roared and roared And twisted and screamed For ours, a vale Of better dreams
And Down in the vale Hear the reaper swing, the reaper swing The reaper swing Down in the vale Hear the reaper sing A tale of winter done
The Fading Dirge
A tradition done in grief and mourning, typically after an execution. A tragic thumping of fists against chests, fading slowly till the fists, like a heart, beat no more. The Fading Dirge is usually led by one person.
Marriage Vows
Red wedding vows end with both partners being asked if they agree to bind themself with the other, their hearts and souls entwined "for now and till the Vale calls".
Dialect Reds have a uniquely identifiable accent, containing some slang terms from old English and Irish.
Known slang terms include:
Bloody/bloodydamn - Equivalent to Gold gory/gorydamn, originates from old Engish. Squab - Equivalent to Gold slag, and (presumably) old English fuck. Gob - Means 'mouth', originates from old English. Swill - General term for alcohol/drink. Other Irish slang has a notable presence in Red speech.
The Red accent also has different variations based on where in the solar system they live. For example, Reds in the Asteroid Belt are described as stretching their vowels like taffy compared to Martian Reds.

Browns are a lower level Color in The Society.
They are servants in homes, businesses, and social institutions. They are often seen as attendants, cooks, janitors, farmers or nannies, and are unnoticed by the people they serve. They have also been depicted as having other tasks, such as being bodyguards for Mickey, a Violet Carver, or as an assassin for the Barca family during the Solar War.

Obsidians are a lowColor in the hierarchy of The Society who serve as elite soldiers known throughout the solar system for their enormous size and titanic strength. Until the founding of the Sons of Ares in 720 PCE, they were the only color to rebel against Gold, with the Dark Revolt in 200 PCE nearly toppling The Society.
After the Dark Revolt, the Obsidian population was forced to live in the polar regions of various planets and moons across the solar system, stripped of all modern technology, and conditioned to worship Golds as their gods.
Physiology Obsidians are typically much larger and bulkier than any other color, with most Obsidians being over seven feet tall and Obsidian children being similar in height to a short adult Gold like Sevro au Barca. Obsidians are incredibly hardy, able to withstand injuries and battle wounds completely unfazed.
Most Obsidians have 5 fingers per hand, though some are known to have 4 or 8 per hand.
Name Identifier Obsidians are one of the only colors to not use name identifiers at any point during the reign of The Society.
Culture Obsidian culture originally bore a resemblance to Mongolian culture, but following the Dark Revolt, the Board of Quality Control used social engineering to reconfigure it to resemble Nordic culture. Obsidians over the subsequent centuries would bear Nordic or Germanic names such as Ragnar and Sigurd.
Obsidian culture was originally patriarchal before the Dark Revolt, but after the rebellion failed and 90% of the population was exterminated, Gold social engineering reversed it into a matriarchy.
Polygamy is common among Obsidian women, with them typically having multiple children from multiple fathers. Each man is bound to protect and treat the other children of his wife's brood as though they were his own, but is considered the first father of the children he personally sired.
Obsidians will open their hands to only those they respect, not to their superiors.
Tribes Obsidians on each planet are divided into multiple tribes that war with each other for the sparse resource of their polar environments. Each clan is ruled by a chieftain referred to as a Jarl. Multiple clans are united into a single tribe, ruled by a Queen, with the Jarls serving under her as warchiefs.
Obsidians consider it wrong to criticize a ruler unless one is willing to fight that ruler.
Each tribe appears to be named for the location of their main territory. Known tribes include:
Tribe of the Blood Ram - Martian antarctic Tribe of the Valkyrie Spires - Martian antarctic
Touch Obsidians are averse to physical touch and affection as a result of conditioning by the Board of Quality Control, who sought to destory the sense of kinship the Osbsidians had before the Dark Revolt by bribing tribal shamans to teach that touching one another will weaken their spirit.[13] Due to this teaching, the only times where physical contact is permitted in Obsidian culture are:
During sexual intercourse (Touch of Spring) When saving another person's life (Touch of Summer) When killing someone (Touch of Winter).
Tattoos Obsidians frequently have various markings and symbols tattooed on different parts of their body. The color of the ink used varies depending on the planet they live on and the Gold family they serve. For example, clans who serve as gladiators for House Carthii use eel-green ink.
War Chant In battle, Obsidians chant a throaty war-song, intended to send terror into the hearts of their adversaries, as well as inspire courage and kinship among the Obsidians themselves.
Kjrdakan Before important battles, Obsidian tribes hold a war ritual known as the Kjrdakan (Lord Wager), which begins with the lowest ranking wing lords and climbs up through the ranks to the Queen as each commander involved in the coming battle places a wager on their success by casting a symbol of their wager into the rib-cage of a slain Aurochs. Those that wager their honor against the battle's success - represented by dropping strands of their hair into the cage - will have their hair shorn in the event of failure and lose their ranks, while those who bleed into the rib-cage wager their life and will be ritually executed if the battle ends in defeat. The lowest form of wager is to give a single golden torc, representing a fraction of battle honor, and to do so is considered an insult, as it represents lack of belief in the battle plan. Those that place the highest wager have the greatest claim to valor if the battle is a victory.
Religion Following the Dark Revolt, Obsidian worship the Norse pantheon, and have been conditioned by the Board of Quality Control to view Golds as the Aesir, referring to them as Sunborn.
In conjunction with the Obsidians being restricted from all contemporary technology and their igorance of the processes of genetic manipulation and Carving, the Golds encourage belief in other supernatural forces such as demons and spirits through the use of sophisticated technology aboard Asgard station and populating the lands of the Obsidians with unimaginable horrors, including bear-like pack-hunters, man-sized (and larger) marine predators and mythic beasts from Earth's ancient legends such as Griffins and dragons.
Ashvar Ashvar is a tradition between Obsidian warriors in which one whose honor has been wronged seeks out their target to restore their honor through a one-on-one duel to the death. Warriors who declare Ashvar use a chunk of coal to paint the mark of the Norse war god Tyr upon their brow and abdicate all worldly concerns except the resolution of their vendetta. An Obsidian who wears the mark of Ashvar is to be given hospitality and immunity by everyone they meet.
The target being challenged determines the terms and conditions of their duel, and is allowed to choose a champion to fight on their behalf. However, if the champion dies, the challenged must be killed immediately by their own people.
Before the beginning of the duel, Shamans paint both parties in ritual bright blue paint and draw runs over the top.
Titles Obsidians will commonly attach titles to their names relating to some aspect of their behavior or referencing notable accomplishments, such as Sefi the Quiet, Valdir the Unshorn, Alia the Snowsparrow, Ramanar the Ice Blood, etc.
Language In addition to Common, Obsidian are the only Color to have their own unique languages. In the early centuries of the Post-Conquering Era, Obsidians spoke a language known as Tetkjr, implied to have Mongolian roots based on the fact that Obsidian culture was influenced by the Mongols prior to the Dark Revolt.
After Gold socially re-engineered Obsidian culture to resemble that of the ancient Norse following the Battle of Peitho and the end of the Dark Revolt, Obsidians shifted to a Nordic-based language known as Nagal. Outside of the Ascomanni who fled to the Kuiper Belt, Tetkjr was not spoken inside Society territory for centuries, and of its written form, only remnants of old prayers have been found in abandoned temples on Mercury.
Society Training After an Obsidian is taken from the ice they are transported to a facility known as the Agoge (named for the Spartan program to train young boys), where they are trained in modern weaponry and space combat. They are given meager rations, and to supplement this are encouraged to loot and steal supplies from the surrounding area in a nightly ritual known as the Nagoge.
While they are permitted to use some martial technology, such as ionBlades, they are not permitted to use technology outside of that intended for military use, and to touch a razor is punishable by death via starvation.
Types of Obsidian Stained Stained are an elite class of Obsidians from Mars considered among the strongest warriors of their caste.
Skuggi Skuggi are a sacred order of spirit warriors and assassins.
Berserkers Berserkers are Obsidian warriors known for their savagery induced by a combat drug known as Fever Cloud. Berserkers are also known for fighting naked, as well as their heavy amounts of tattoos.
Shamans Shamans are Obsidians who oversee the religious and spiritual practices of a tribe. They are the traditional emissary through which Obsidian clans commune with the "gods", making them effectively spies for the Board of Quality Control to monitor the Obsidian population and keep them in line. They are some of the only Obsidians on the ice of any sphere to know and speak the HighLingo Aureate dialect of Common.
Eaters Eaters are Obsidians who have been shamed and cast out from their clan and have resorted to cannibalism for survival as they wander the ice.
Ascomanni Ascomanni are the descendants of Obsidian warlords who fled into the Kuiper Belt after the Dark Revolt and evolved into their own civilization separate from that of the Obsidians of the solar system. They are considered quite ruthless and violent, known for their tendancies for cannibalism and decorating the hulls of their ships with the bodies of their victims.

Pinks are a lowColor and the second-lowest caste in the hierarchy of The Society. They serve as concubines and valets, working in a variety locations from public brothels to the private homes highColor families. In the eyes of the Society they are regarded as property and bought as slaves of an individual or establishment rather than being hired as employees.
Physiology Pinks are bred to be unparalleled in beauty, but are simultaneously extremely delicate. Their bones are easily fractured and they have a very low pain tolerance.
Due to the nature of their work, Pinks under the reign of The Society are chemically sterilized. New generations of Pinks are instead produced in breeding tubes using sperm and embryos from different combinations of donors.
Some Pinks are bred with Pheremonal Defense Mechanisms (abbreviated PDM), which release pheremones that cause anyone who breathes them in to exterience intense infatuation with the Pink.
Types of Pinks Rose Roses are a rare and highly valued class of Pink, regarded as being among the best at their profession. They are extremely rare and expensive, comparable in both categories to Stained Obsidian. As a result, Roses are highly coveted by the rich and powerful.
Hetaera Hetaerae (singular: Hetaera) are a type of Pink in service to Gold houses in The Rim.
Education Pinks were originally bred for beauty and nothing else, but many Golds quickly grew bored of concubines who had nothing beyond their sex appeal. As a result, future generations of Pinks were trained to be inscrutaible enigmas and masters of sex, art, music, and emotion in order to hold their owners' attentions.
Gardrens Pinks are bred and trained in facilities called Gardens where they are taught the physical arts of pleasure and sex. They are also educated in the nuances of human interaction, learning to read human body language, display empathy, and how to make a subject feel at ease to facilitate emotional bonding through a proportional mimicking of body language known as Shadow Dancing. This training enables them to entice their masters mentally as well as physically, and makes them exceptionally good at recognizing deception, to the point where many Pinks in the Solar Republic were employed by the Free Legions as lie detectors during the Battle of Luna by units who couldn't get access to equivalent technology while in the field.
Known Gardens include:
Dryope Gardens - Luna Hysperia Gardens - Luna
Cupid's Kiss As part of their conditioning, young Pinks are implanted with a device called Cupid's Kiss that exposes them to constant pain. The device is place around the spine and gives a constant burning sensation there along with an unending headache. The pain is only deactivated when a Pink obeys their orders, conditioning them to equate their own pleasure with the absence of pain and obedience to their masters.
The Kiss is removed once a Pink begins physical training, around the age of twelve, but the threat of it being put back serves as an additional motivation to encourage Pinks to obey.
Pinks have the highest suicide rate out of all the colors, twelve times higher than any other.

Grays are a midColor. They serve as the police, military, and security personnel throughout The Society. They ensure order and obedience to the hierarchy and form the bulk of the Society's Legions, serving in Cohorts. Grays who are assigned as security overseers in Mars tend to become abusive to lowColors beneath them. Their name identifier is ti, the chemical symbol for Titanium. Grays naturally have gray-colored hair.
Standard Grays do not seem to possess physical genetic modifications intended to give them superhuman prowess in the field of battle. Multiple Obsidians and Golds have been shown to be capable of easily dispatching Grays in large numbers. Ragnar in particular can dispatch them by crushing them against walls with his bulk. However, due to their purpose within society, it is very likely that they are designed to have stronger bones and muscles than all of the castes that are not classified as warColors.
On the other hand, Ephraim claims that Grays are adaptable, efficient, and bred for systematic loyalty. While they may not possess the physical strength of Obsidians and Golds, they possess the highest amount of discipline and devotion to duty. Some Grays may also install ocular implants. Grays who work in the Society's police force are known as Watchmen. Watchmen wear gray uniforms and blue berets.
The Gray population of the Solar system outnumbers that of Gold a thousand to one. Many Grays, especially those who served in Society's Legions, speak in military lingo known as dog tongue, or Legion speak. Grays who enlist in the Society's legions are required to serve between ten and twenty years. 'Merryweather ad portas' is a battle cry used by seven centuries of Grays. It originates from the Conquering when the American John Merryweather almost turned the tide of the war by invading Luna. It is a reminder that the enemy is always at the gates.
Lurchers Highly trained Grays known for killing Golds and other highColors. They are named after a species of hounds crossbred to kill prey larger than themselves. They possess excellent combat skills and tactical prowess far above normal Grays. They are also genetically-altered to have superior senses, such as smell and sight.
Male Gray legionnaires receive a 10,000 credit bonus for fathering children, while Gray mothers receive a stipend of 1,000 credits per month.

Blues are a midColor and are the Astronavigators and Pilots of The Society, bred specifically to crew starships. They are often raised learning complex physics and mathematics required for spaceflight from a very young age and it is not uncommon for a fully matured Blue to hold multiple PhDs in topics such as Astrophysics, Quantum Mathematics, and Geometry. They have digiTats on their shaved heads and sync to electronics.
Blue names are identified using the prefix Xe, which is the corresponding chemical symbol for xenon.
Synaptic Drift Blues connect to ships using the Synaptic Drift and DigiTats tattooed onto their shaved heads. Most colors cannot understand the empathetic connection minds make in the synaptic drift. A Blue's communication with their pilots in battle is nonverbal. Instead it is formed of a web where the electric currents in their brains bond and interact with those of the others. Losing a connected pilot or ship was said to be of the cruelest of amputations.
Types of Blues Under the rule of The Society, different Blues will be assigned to different roles depending on the size of a starship's crew. Known roles that Blues typically fill on larger crews include:
helmBlue - pilot or helmsman comBlue - oversees a starship's sensor and communications equipment. ripWing Pilot - pilots an individual fighter craft Other careers filled by Blues in The Society include:
Ship traffic controller Professor at The Academy
Culture Due to their ability to sync directly with their ships, Blues tend to prefer digital communication, as their brains undergo neurodevelopmental sculpting which enhances human-to-computer interaction but impairs communication outside of their sect. As a result, they have the slowest manner of speech out of any other color, and tend to be very reserved when it comes to their emotions.
Higher tier Blues are described as speaking with dreamy lingo, while Blues of less prestigious backgrounds tend to have a sharper and more worldly dialect.
Blues were bred to withstand long and isolated journeys through space. As a result they share everything including food, sleeping quarters, friends, and lovers. They are also raised to share the ambition of doing their job with precision and rising high through merit in order to honor their Sect.
In The Rim, the best Blue pilots are believed to start their careers at age ten and end at age twenty.
In addition to the digiTats on their heads to aid in synchronizing with their ships, some Blues will have mathematical equations tattooed on their bodies.
Sects Blues are most commonly raised from birth in communal Sects that teach them to embrace logic and enact their role with cold efficiency. Some Blues are born outside of a Sect, and commonly grow up working in dockyards.
Known sects include:
Copernican Sect Rho Sect
Dockers Blues raised in dockyards such as those of Phobos or the String Docks near The Academy's central hub are considered lowborn and more emotional than is desirable for their color due to being raised in a "greasy" environment.
Education The two most notable training academies for Blues in The Society are the Observatory and the Midnight School. The two institutions appear to have an academic rivalry, as some Blues who graduated from the Midnight School view the Observatory as inferior to their alma mater.
Graduates of the school are older than early twenties.

Violets are a mid-tier caste, though they are mentioned to be as rare as Whites. They are the creative class, the artists, musicians, and performers of society. They are also news anchors and appear to work with technology and dabble in genetic engineering. They are given drugs (pills) to increase their output. They design the buildings in Society, but are not really architects, although some Golds and Silvers mistake them so.
The Grove Mickey mentions to Darrow that he grew up in something called "The Grove," where he was given psychedelics and made to create what he saw in his nightmares. The Grove is the colony where Violets are raised.
Sigil Their Sigil resembles an amethyst mask in smoke, but they always change.
Carvers In a Society where technology has turned some fields of science into an art form, Violet Carvers are the craftsmen that alter the physiology of creatures, for example, the Oracles of Octavia au Lune, Lorn au Arcos's Icarus, tigerlynxes, the giant sea creature in the Citadel, they were all Carved. The griffins used by Golds to convince the Obsidians that they are Gods are also the result of carving.
They also Carve Colors, for example, Fitchner's wife had her fallopian tubes modified, Darrow was Carved into an Iron Gold, and Evey was given wings. Pinks were mentioned to be Carved into mermaids as well, and at Darrow's Triumph, there were also drakes and zebracores. They are seen on Europa, the moon where Lorn and his family reside.

Whites are a highColor, though not as high level as Gold. Many are priests and priestesses who oversee the ritual functions of Society, preserving the traditions of old. They arbitrate justice and push their philosophy. The rituals they conduct tend to be carried out by virgin maidens wielding iron daggers and gold laurels, while children carry triangular standards of scepters, swords, and scrolls with laurels. Many others fulfill the role of a mentor, teaching young Golds about their role in Society. Despite these roles, it is stated that some white Judiciars also wielded real power in the Society. Overall, Whites fulfill many of the religious, educational, and appraisal functions.
White Justices & Chances The highest honor any White can achieve, is to become a Justice. Young Whites who begin training to become Justices are known as a Chance. While most other Whites study in local cloisters, Chances are initiated into monastic sanctuaries, where they study and meditate, seeking to abandon their humanity and embody the spirit of justice. After a lifetime within these sanctuaries, if a Chance reaches a state of transcendence and has the courage, she may chemically blind herself. At this, she has now become a Justice, the most elite of the hierophants.
Traditional Gold trials and duels are officiated and overseen by the Fates: a pair consisting of an elder Justice and their Chance. In duels, the Justice bears an iron rod and laurel branch. They gives the opening benediction and is seated on a chair of bone. The Chance carries a bag of white sand and creates a ring around the duelists. Lastly, they initiates the duel by breaking a small branch of elm.
In Gold trials, the Justice sits on a seat of elm, while the Chance instead sits on a chair of bone. The purpose of the Fates in this case, is to assess the trial and intervene to levy additional charges. The Chance bears a small iron bell.
Whites Based on their judgment, they may ring her bell. This is where the term "unless chance strikes" originates from. Upon doing so, the trial is interrupted, and they will pass her recommendation of additional charges to the Court. While the Whites are incapable of enforcing the accusation and are not required to provide evidence, it is unthinkable for courts to disregard a Chance's recommendation. This Chance was instrumental in pushing The Rim Olympic Councils to levy the additional charge condemning their sovereign.
Arbiters Commonly, many Whites do not take the path of the Justice. In the Core, many Whites seek out more profitable and worldly pursuits. For example, some may take up roles as brokers for guilds, referred to as an Arbiter. A White Arbiter from the Ophion Guild, for example, brokered an agreement with Dido au Romulus to exchange sensitive information. Oslo, a White Arbiter secretly working for the Syndicate, utilizes their extensive studies of history and military, to appraise artifacts. They are described as wearing a white business suit and living in a lavish penthouse.
Other Roles Whites who serve more ritualistic roles provide benedictions at weddings or perform executions.
Though Grays act as law enforcement along with the ever-obedient Obsidians, Whites also possess many methods for extracting information out of fugitives. Matteo implies that they have specially built facilities for this purpose, and utilize crude methods such as bodily mutilation all the way to truth serums.
Naming Convention Their naming system seems to be very simple, as most are named after virtues, or similar. There appears to be no system of family names or surnames, as all the Whites seen have only first names.
Guilds White Arbiters serve as brokers who handle the contracts and deals between two or more parties. The Guilds are the official Arbiter organizations who appear to act as free agents in the Red Rising universe. The Guilds auction off valuable items, such as the Dawn of Hermes, a piece of art crafted by the Master Maker Glirastes. Virginia noted that the Reds who were liberated from the mines were represented by White Arbiter Guilds who assisted the Reds in choosing gross proceeds instead of a one-time buyout. Silvers like Britannia ag Krieg made her fortunes negotiating buyouts from the liberated Reds. Quicksilver's Sun Industries made a mad-dash to buyout the majority of the H-3 market. Two named Guilds have been identified so far, the Ophion Guild and the Amani Guild.
Ophion Guild The Ophion Guild was introduced via Oslo, the point of contact for Ephraim for freelance work. Oslo was a member of the Ophion Guild and it was later revealed that Oslo and the Ophion Guild are in league with the Syndicate. In Iron Gold, a White from the Ophion Guild contacted Dido au Raa to offer an exchange of information. Later it was revealed that the White offered evidence of how the Docks of Ganymede were actually destroyed. Romulus au Raa received a similar offer, he invited the Arbiters to the Rim and slaughtered them with a warhawk, burned their ship and what he thought was the only physical copy of the evidence. Later, Romulus would be sentenced to death in part for the murder of the Arbiters. The Ophion Guild auctioned off the Dawn of Hermes to Quicksilver for ninety-four billion credits.
Amani Guild The Amani Guild is another Guild mentioned during an exchange between Holiday and Ephraim. Holiday explained Virginia had a contract drafted by the Ophion Guild detailing the release of Volga upon Pax and Electra's return. Ephraim asked for a contract from the Amani Guild because the Ophion Guild was in league with the Syndicate.
Menta School In Dark Age (pg 326), Xenophon mentioned his graduation from the Menta. Alluding to a school system similar to the colors.

Coppers are a highColor. They are the administrators, lawyers and bureaucrats of Society. They hold positions of public affairs and administration. They are said to be more numerous than silver in a ratio of 10 to 1. Their species classification by the Board of Quality Control is likely Homo cuprum.
Coppers are depicted as corrupt and greedy individuals. Many Coppers in the series are shown to regularly take bribes or to skim off reserves for their own personal gains. This is embodied in Timony cu Podginus, the administrator of Darrow's mine, Lykos. Podginus is seen to wear gaudy jewelry and enjoy a lavish lifestyle, at the peril of the miners who he deprives of their food to sell on black markets. In this corruption, they are said to often be dishonest and have secondary intentions under their surface.
Physicality Coppers have Copper-color hair and eyes.

Gold Sigil Golds are the highest level of Color within the Society of Red Rising. They are humanity's fiercely intelligent rulers, their physique tends to be larger and stronger than those of other colors (with the exception of Obsidian.) As of December 741 PCE, there are about 40 million Golds in the Society.
Golds were originally created to shepherd lower colors out into the solar system to colonize planets. They were bred to withstand the harsher environments of space while being able to organize and lead the lower colors as they established colonies for use by humans across the System.
A Gold's first loyalty is expected to be to Color, then family, then planet, then schoolHouse. Most schoolHouses are dominated by one or two powerful families. On Mars, the House Augustus, the House Bellona, and the House Arcos influence all others.
A lower color will often refer to a Gold as either Dominus or Domina (depending on gender, male and female respectively), or in the case of a group of Golds refer to them as Dominii.
Physiology Golds have been genetically enhanced in many ways. Their bone density is 5 times stronger than average bone along with increased tensile strength in their tendons, ligaments, and muscle fibers. They can hold their breath for at least 5 minutes and have increased cognitive capabilities which is further enhanced by brain implants. Additionally, the majority of Golds are of a height of at least 2 meters (6.5 feet) or taller. To be under 2 meters is considered short among Golds. They have golden irises, gold/blonde hair, and the golden sigil on the back of each hand. Their skin color, however, can vary from black to olive to white, and they have fewer nerves.
Due to their superior physique, Golds tend to live longer than humans of Old Earth, and Cellular Rejuvenation Therapy increases their lifespan further still. For example, Spiridon au Arcos lived to 163 without any Cellular Rejuvenation Therapy. This also means that even Golds considered to be elderly are still fearsome in battle.
Pre-Conquering The very first Gold ancestors had normal eyes and wore golden uniforms, but after many decades of selective breeding and genetic changes they eventually became the Golds of the current era
Peerless Scarred A Peerless Scarred would be able to lift over 1,104 LBS, while a standard Gold could not.
Classes Social
Iron Golds - The Conquerors that overthrew Old Earth's governments with their battleships and established the Society throughout the solar system. Used as a term to describe any Golds who have performed comparable feats.
Pixie - The gluttons of Gold society. Those who party without care for politics or their own health.
Bronze - The lower stock of the Gold caste, the weakest and smallest, generally with khaki hair and eyes. Official
Peerless Scarred - Peerless Scarred are Golds who have survived and conquered The Institute. Peerless scars can also be earned with extraordinary acts in battle if a non-Peerless is given permission to partake in a battle.
Graduates - The Golds who survived the Institute but were either enslaved or did not perform any notable feats.
Shamed - The Golds who performed poorly at the Institute, and are usually sent to the fringes of the Solar System for exhausting administrative duties. Gold Culture
Rights of Parley Golds have formal traditions to signal the beginning of a parley between military commanders on the field of battle. The first party touches their heart with an open palm and extends it to the second, who repeats the gesture and sets their palm on the first. The first party then recites the phrase "Sheathed is my blade, held fast by my word," and the second responds with the phrase "True are my words, secured by my name."
Members of House Augustus and House Lune have formally done this rite a total of five times before the beginning of the saga, though only four instances involved a blood member of the gens Augustus.

The Society is the Solar System's dominant human government. It has ruled for over 700 years, holding sway over the lives of at least 14 generations of Humanity. Its people are separated into different "Colors," indicating both caste and vocation. Proponents of the Society consider it to be the most effective and perfect government ever devised by Man. Prior to The Rising, The Society encompassed roughly 18 billion souls, and nearly every planet in the solar system.
In order to colonize other worlds, humanity naturally required an immense force of dedicated labor. By genetic and surgical manipulation, mankind was gradually differentiated into the various Colors of The Society. Initially, Gold was merely a rank, indicated by the wearing of a gold uniform. Over time, however, undesirable traits were bred-out of the ruling class and their physical and mental abilities were escalated to what a 21st-century Man would have considered super-human.
Once The Society had established itself on the first colonies, the Golds decided that Earth was no longer a necessary governing body, but rather a meddlesome parent, and so there was war. Earth lost and was subjugated by The Society, which took its place as the guiding star of humanity’s destiny.
Government The government of Society is an Oligarchic hierarchy, with the Golds as the ruling class. Members of the Senate are appointed exclusively from their ranks, and Golds hold all high-ranking government offices.
Each individual planet or moon is run by an ArchGovernor, while individual cities on a planet are run by Governors. Moons that orbit an inhabited planet such as Mars are run by subGovernors.
Board of Quality Control The Board of Quality Control is a government body dedicated to upholding the hierarchy and enforcing The Society's eugenics programs.
Department of Energy The Department of Energy is the government body responsible for managing and regulating The Society's helium-3 mining facilities on Mars and The Rim. They are responsible for supplying rations and resources to the mines in order to keep the Red population working, and provide mineMagistrates with guidelines on how to manage their mine and quell dissent.
Military The Society's military consists of multiple fleets of armed spaceships and several divisions of armed soldiers, with Golds holding all command roles in both naval and ground forces. Blues in the Navy serve as pilots and bridge crews, while Oranges and Reds oversee a ship's maintenance and vital functions. Greens in the military oversee communications and are tasked with hacking and disrupting enemy computer systems. All ground combat and ship boarding is conducted by Grays, Obsidians, and Golds.
The navy is led by an ArchImperator, who serves as the supreme commander of the Society military. Each fleet is led by an Imperator, and consists of multiple individual squadrons led by a Praetor. Local fleets responsible for the defense of a specific sphere will typically be under the authority of their world's archGovernor.
Known Divisions of the Society Navy include:
4th Fleet, Classis Venetum - defends Venus 5th Fleet, Classis Libertas - Patrols the inner Asteroid Belt; Commanded by Martian archGovernor Nero au Augustus and Imperator Adriatus until March of 742 PCE. 6th Fleet - Presumably serves as the defense fleet for Mars; Commanded by Tiberius au Bellona until February of 742 PCE. 8th Fleet (Classis Saturnis) presumably defends Saturn. Within each fleet, ripWings are organized into squadrons of twelve fighters each.
The most powerful forces of the Society Navy are the armadas made up of two or more fleets with overlapping spheres of influence under the direct authority of The Sovereign:
Scepter Armada - Defense force of Luna and Earth (presumably consists of the 1st and 2nd Fleets) Sword Armada - Primary offensive armada of The Society Martian Armada - Consists of the 5th and 6th Fleets The Society's ground forces are led by Gold Legates, with ArchLegates serving as the overall commander of units comprised of multiple legions, such as the Praetorian Guard.
There are at least twenty-three divisions of The Society armed forces at the time of The Rising. Known legions include:
Zero Legion, Legio Cohors Nihil - A secret legion used as part of the Praetorian Guard. Legio Zero Pavor Nocturnus - A subdivision of Zero Legion. Formally referred to as Night Terrors but colloquially known as the Gorgons. Commanded by Atlas au Raa from 739 to 755 PCE. 10th Legion, X Legio Pardus - Also referred to as the Iron Leopards. Commanded by Ajax au Grimmus from 747 to 755 PCE. 11th Legion - Also referred to as the Golden Basilisks. 13th Legion, XIII Legio Dracones - Also referred to as Dragoons. Under the direct command of the Ash Lord at the time of the Rising. 20th Legion, XX Legio Fulminata - Also known as the Thunderbolt Legion. 22nd Legion - one of the personal bodyguard units of House Augustus that make up the Lionguard. The Society military possesses three Deep Space Command Centers.
Military ranks in The Society do not distinguish between branches, and often overlap, with a single Gold individual being able to hold multiple ranks at once.
The highest military award that an officer can give is the Civic Crown, made of common oak leaves tattooed on the recipient's head.
Dominion The Society is centered around the Core, Luna, and its reach extends throughout the Solar System, but stopped expanding once the Solar System was inhabited.
Population All Colors of the Society are genetically modified humans. The population in 736 PCE totals around 18 billion, with about 100 million being Golds. In 741 PCE there were 132,680 Peerless Scarred out of 40 million adult Golds, being the only Golds allowed to join the military. To differentiate their class, the population of the Society was genetically altered to have different color-coded eyes and hair, with vibrance defining the tiers in each class.
Sigils All Colors also have Sigils implanted into both wrists and attached to the metacarpus to provide additional identification. Most of them were designed based on the alchemical symbols.
Religion There is no unifying religion among the Colors of The Society. Reds believe that in death, they will meet an Old Man, who shepherds the souls of the departed on to the afterlife. Obsidians worship Golds as literal Gods (a measure enforced upon them in response to a dangerously-effective rebellion in 200 PCE). Golds are characterized as entirely Atheist.
If one had to name a “Religion” of The Society, it would be The Society itself. Indeed, Humans of every color are indoctrinated to worship (in effect, if not in name) the structure and rigidity of the hierarchy.
Economy Economic activities mainly occur with further planets engaging in trading with the Core. Economics are generally handled by Silvers.
Education Depending on social caste and rank, different members of society receive different levels of education. For example, a Blue pilot would be trained in flying starships and spacefaring theory from a young age, but a Red laborer who would have no use for that would not. An Obsidian would be trained to fight and battle, but an Orange would be learning about gears and mechanisms. It all depends on what their color does (Reds mine, Obsidians fight, etc)
Each planet and moon has at least one standardized school for most Colors.
The Institute for Golds The Observatory for Blues The Grove for Violets The Garden for Pinks The Agoge for Obsidians and Grays. There are also public educational facilities for use by multiple Colors.
Gold children are given exams at the age of five to evaluate their education.
Golds are able to pursue further education after graduation from The Institute. These educational facilities are scattered throughout the Solar System, each dedicated to a specific profession.
The Academy - for training in space combat. Located in the Asteroid Belt Politico School - on Luna Judiciar School -Venus
Culture Each Caste has their own unique culture, even having different beliefs or religions, most obvious amongst the Reds and Obsidians with the Old Man and revering the Golds as gods, respectively.
Many cities on planets ruled by the Society have blocks reserved for highColor use, with a badge of warrant required for lowColors to access. HighColors are permitted to spend time in lowColor districts at their leisure, but never the other way around.
Entertainment HighColors in The Society often entertain themselves with lavish parties, courtesans, or semi-barbaric sports at lower classes' expense. Those who indulge in these pleasures are called Pixies and are looked down upon by other Golds who consider themselves above such things. A list popular sports and games enjoyed in The Society and its successor states can be found here.
HC shows and other forms of entertainment are produced by Gold to entertain and placate the masses, while news programs are also hosted by anchors from multiple different Colors.
Golds have access to a variety of pleasure drugs such as demonDust, lexamine, and blowfish poison.
Reds typically enjoy dancing and singing as their primary form of entertainment.
Language The primary language of The Society is known as Common. Most citizens speak and write in midLingo, with the lowest classes being somewhat literate, with the possible exception of Obsidians. Obsidians were stripped of all technology except Stone Age-level knowledge, and have their own Nordic-based language known as Nagal. Golds and some higher-tiered Colors also learn the ancient languages of Latin, Arabic, Chinese, English and German, among others, as part of history and culture.
