Four is a very surreal number, with strange mannerisms, including being able to mutilate, revive, screech (causing either the stunning or death of the victim), shoot energy beams from his hands (causing the paralyzing and painful shock of the victim) or suck other characters into his body (sending them to the EXIT).
2008-2017 (incl. X Finds Out His Value) Four seems to be a fun-loving, intelligent, and friendly character, since he is good at math, helping X discover his value. He is also thoughtful, as after One killed Three, he publicly recognizes the dangers he feels One poses to society, and proceeds to organize & steward the ostracism of One from the number playground, including her exile inside the Moon that lasted from 2009 to 2023. However, he is also quite unforgiving and cruel toward One, and takes extreme measures like locking her up inside the Moon. While it was kind of logical, it was also unjust toward One, who was locked up in the Moon for 14 long years, and she developed a desire for revenge.
Four's personality may also have had a menacing and/or unhinged side during this time period, as when the other algebraliens realize he has a large amount of power, they make him give most of power to Two as they feel Two is highly unlikely to do anything evil with his power. However, Four still has enough power to cause significant damage, as when he and X get their hosting licenses in Spring 2017, Four is able to start and self-fund an entire season of BFDI with the help of X, but due to his mistreatment of his contestants (at the beginning of which there are 64), and Two advertises a new season, all but 14 leave his side. According to X, Four has also become the biggest fan of Battle for Dream Island, and had an obsession to be on the show one day.
Battle for BFDI When Four came to Earth after shrinking Black Hole back to his normal size, he at first appears as a strange number with little known about him, partly because he is crudely drawn. He later comes off as erratic and somewhat reckless, often mutilating and harming the contestants. As a result, most of the contestants fear him, praying that Four won't smite them off the face of the planet. However, they still happily and willingly do the challenges.
During his time as a host, Four was shown to want a sense of dominance in the show, like in "Fortunate Ben," and gets furious if talked back to or has tasks done for him. When provoked, Four would show no mercy and would even do things such as dissemble close friends out of anger, even lacking remorse in the process. Four doesnβt tolerate criticism in early BFB, known to act with violence as shown in "Four Goes Too Far", as he mistook Nickel's response to calling David and Roboty "the only two non-objects on the team" as criticism (which they could not tolerate very well). Four threatens to zap Nickel, with A Better Name Than That's plan being the only thing stopping the attack.
In "Enter the Exit", Four seems to be a lot calmer, friendlier, and humbler, most likely because the contestants recovered him. He was noticeably less violent than before. After his return, he didn't screech at anyone, adding onto how friendly he became, but still will not hesitate to zap those who bother him.
"The Escape from Four" shows Four's personality in more depth as well as his possible motivations: being neurodivergent and completely insecure in his obsession with hosting his own competition; making him act out of neurotic childishness and overtly emotional instability. Four acts like a control freak because he wants everyone to stay with him forever, explaining his narcissism and cruelty when hosting the show. Four throws tantrums when things don't go his way and strongly dislikes being abandoned (possibly due to him losing his playthings) to the point where he cries and refuses to let X console him since he thinks that X will abandon him too.
Battle for BFB In the aftermath of the split, Four appears to act a bit nicer towards the contestants. After Two took nearly all of the contestants, Taco tells Four that they lost over half of the cast. Instead of being angry or sad, Four eventually copes with it and makes light of the situation by saying BFB has "advanced" to its final 14 contestants.
In "Uprooting Everything", when it comes to Purple Face asking if he could be a co-host, Four immediately declines. Four was down about the last four contestants complimenting X's position and saying he was a "good host" but not reciprocating the same to Four.
Finally, in "Chapter Complete," Four shows his deeply insecure side. His suppressed thoughts are represented as imaginary versions of the EXITors, who initially seem to support him. Later, when they overhear Profily asking Four to wake up, they tell Four that nobody in the real world likes him, and they are all the friends he needs. After Four realizes that he made them up, the Imaginary EXITors act unfriendly towards him, saying the contestants won't care if he leaves them forever. Four attacks Imaginary 8-Ball for saying this, causing the other Imaginary EXITors to point out how rude Four is. These rude things include killing people for fun, torturing the EXITors with eternal math and getting angry at them if they don't do it, guilt-tripping, and being overpossessive. Four then deletes them from existence and runs away. When the contestants confront Four on the sun, Gelatin scolds Four for expecting them to like him even when he constantly treats them badly, especially after they stayed with him after the events of "The Escape from Four". Hearing this, Four finally accepts that his actions were wrong and apologizes to Gelatin. After this, he is on good terms with the BFB contestants, Purple Face, and the Announcer.
However, this does not completely change Four's heart after the events of the fourth season. As of today, he still holds some resentment towards certain individuals, including Two (formerly), the TPOT contestants, the EXITors, and One. Although, it is implied that Four regrets putting the contestants in the EXIT in "Chapter Complete," which is shown when Four listens to Two's request to let them go in "Out Of The Blue".
TPOT In "The Great Goikian Bake-Off," Four reverts to his chaotic behavior, likely due to lingering anger at the old contestants or his commitment to guarding the hotel's food. Additionally, in the stinger for "The Seven Wonders of Goiky," Four punishes Roboty for escaping the EXIT, showcasing his aggressive and controlling nature towards those who defy his rules. His rage intensifies when Clock, his "friend," is trapped in the elimination space by Two in "Oneirophobe's Nightmare" prompting a destructive rampage alongside X.
However, in "Out Of The Blue," Four's demeanor shifts slightly. While he still tries to prevent the EXITors from escaping, he becomes somewhat more amiable when they assist in the hotel's kitchen, suggesting a possible softening in his approach, at least when it involves cooperation and help.
When Four takes over Twoβs role as a host during their depression in "The Power of Four," he starts to show more of his old personality from early BFBβthough less bizarre than before. Even with the changes seen by "Chapter Complete," Four still has no problem harming or even killing contestants without remorse, especially when they break the rules. This includes splitting Pillow in half with his tongue after she ate one of the cakes. One of the clearest examples of his cruelty shows when he smiles maniacally after zapping Yellow Face into ashes. The grin, along with Yellow Faceβs ashes on him, makes it clear how dangerous and downright frightening he can be.
By the time of "Last One Standing," Four's behavior is completely different, now understanding that One has escaped the Moon that he used to imprison her and poses an immense threat to the entire world. He focuses on helping the contestants, rather than deliberately hurting them, to stop her progress. He fights alongside Liy against Pencil to try and get the latter to stop being reckless with Two's power he gave her, but also briefly faces his past as well as getting his powers taken from him, much to his horror. In his last moments with Pencil before she zaps him off the roof, he shows self-awareness of all the damage he has caused to his past contestants, and even screams for X for help just before getting taken by One, and later imprisoned.
By the events of "That's What Foes Are For", Four escaped from the moon thanks to the TPOT eliminated contestants.
Alone- TPOT 20 In the past 16 years prior to TPOTβs events, Four has been shown to have relatively the same personality, but a few stark differences show in his behavior. In his first depictions, Four has been shown to be quite unforgiving if given a reason to hold a grudge, such as when One killed Three. Even after she brought her back (albeit poorly), Four was not willing to give One a second chance and locked her away with no regard for her feelings. This ruthless behavior when dealing with people deemed a threat by him is driven by his protectiveness for X and the other Algebraliens.
Over time, he eventually grew guilty about leaving One locked away for sixteen years; this is shown when, after possessing the Sun, Four looks at the moon and becomes visibly saddened, and after overhearing Gelatin saying "Everyone deserves a second chance" to Flower, he looks at the ground with guilt.
