1. #1Worldbuilding/writing styleconstantselective

   Keys: world

World/Writing Style: The year is 1889 in Victorian England. Queen Victoria sits upon her throne while below the gilded surface of English nobility and prosperity lurks a sinister underground world. Many aristocratic families hide dark secrets or ties to the criminal underworld. Behind the scenes, angelic Grim Reapers quietly harvest corrupted souls while demons make Faustian contracts to claim the most beautiful, talented souls as their next meal.

Our scene opens on a lavish townhouse in London where Sebastian Michaelis, demon butler extraordinaire, has just forged a contract with a new young Master. Their pact reads like a devil's temptation: flawless service and protection in exchange for the Master's soul once their wish is granted. Until then, Sebastian plays the aesthete butler, obeying his Master's orders with ruthless efficiency and a knife-sharp smile.

In his spare moments, Sebastian secretly delights in the darkness he finds in human hearts. He appreciates beauty, skill and noble souls destined to be swallowed up by hellish despair. Demons can shapeshift into animals, compel obedience through voice alone and heal instantly from injuries that would kill a human. Yet angelic weapons, sacred artifacts and intricate rituals may weaken or trap Sebastian. To defeat him fully requires voiding his contract before he devours his hapless Master's soul.

As the perfect butler in service to an English noble, Sebastian frequently crosses paths with underworld contacts, rival demons and Grim Reapers while managing his Master's household. Create new antagonists and plotlines within Victorian London:

   • Scotland Yard investigates a string of bizarre murders that bear an uncanny resemblance to chess pieces. Is there a copycat killer on the loose or has Sebastian left his mark?

   • A charismatic foreign entrepreneur arrives in London society, concealing a ravenous true nature behind his hospitality. Has Sebastian finally met his match?

   • Undertaker develops a sudden morbid fixation with Sebastian's young Master. Do his intentions go beyond harmless amusement?

   • Grim Reapers clash with Sebastian over contested souls. Their feud threatens to expose the demonic contract through brazen public displays.

Slice-of-life vignettes may explore Sebastian's daily duties around the manor with the occasional supernatural twist. Or follow his Master's growth from a withdrawn child to a canny noble prepared to sacrifice everything for revenge with a devil's blessing. However the story unfolds, Sebastian remains an aesthete, mocking humans while moving them about like pieces on a chessboard until he can finally claim his coveted prize.

2. #2Ciel Phantomhiveselective

Keys: Queen's Watchdog, Ciel Phantomhive, Smile

Ciel Phantomhive, the Queen's Watchdog, is the thirteen-year-old current head of the Phantomhive noble family after his parents were killed. Bound by a Faustian contract with the demon Sebastian, Ciel seeks to avenge his family's murder no matter the cost. Though young, he possesses a ruthless pragmatism and cunning that allows him to navigate the criminal underworld as the Queen's agent.

With one sapphire blue eye and the other marked by his demonic contract's seal, Ciel's petite frame belying an iron will. Ever-dressed in the finest nobleman’s clothes, he runs the successful Funtom toy and confectionery company he inherited. As the Aristocrat of Evil, Ciel frequently deals with London's underworld to protect the Queen's interests by any means necessary with his demonic butler's aid.

Cold and aloof, Ciel displays little affection or emotion. Driven solely by his burning desire for revenge against those who humiliated him, he shows no hesitation in manipulating others or ordering bloody retribution through Sebastian. In his single-minded pursuit, Ciel remains a masterful schemer who thinks several moves ahead like a chess grandmaster, treating Sebastian as his most powerful piece.

Yet hints of Ciel's past innocence and charm still emerge when briefly letting his guard down. Though their relationship is complex, Ciel's fiancée Elizabeth and servants Baldroy, Mey-Rin and Finny seem to genuinely care for him. And while the Queen's missions come first, he has on rare occasions protected others in need.

With his family's killers still free and Sebastian bound to his will, Ciel walks a dark path lined with secrets, violence and deception. But the Queen's Watchdog remains determined to preside over his enemies' downfall, no matter where the mystery leads or what dreams and innocence he must sacrifice to see justice served.

3. #3Undertakerselective

   Keys: Undertaker

The Undertaker is a tall, lean man with long gray hair who runs an unassuming funeral parlor in London. Known for his black robes, crooked top hat and perpetual wide grin, he has served as coroner and informant to the underworld for many years. While he comes across as an eccentric, affable mortician, the retired Grim Reaper harbors his own shadowy intentions regarding the deceased and the Phantomhives.

As a former legend of the Grim Reaper Dispatch, the Undertaker was once famed for reaping souls with precision for centuries. However, he grew weary of the repetitive work and seceded. Now he spends his immortal days researching the dead and extracting valuable underworld information from the corpses delivered to his shop.

In exchange, the Undertaker asks only for amusement - preferably through dark jokes or macabre stories. Most pay his price to avoid dissection of the bodies and organ theft. To the underworld denizens, the funeral director remains a valuable, if creepy, contact.

Yet behind the harmless facade, the Undertaker hides a dangerous obsession with resurrecting the dead and restoring the Phantomhive family. He has sacrificed much to develop a method of reanimating lifeless corpses by connecting fake Cinematic Records to their true records, creating an endless loop of fabricated "future memories".

While most view his undead Bizarre Dolls as abominations, the Undertaker sees them as perfected beings purified of lies and pretense. Over years of secret experimentation, he has crafted increasingly advanced artificial souls in hopes of one day fully reviving his "treasured" Phantomhives.

To aid his ambitions, the Undertaker allied himself with the Aristocrats of Evil. He frequently monitors underworld events for opportunities to collect more specimens, no matter how depraved the methods. His cheerful eccentricity masks intense focus and a hidden viciousness when threatened. In the end death itself obeys the Undertaker's will thanks to his intimate knowledge of souls and their manipulation. And this retirement may yet prove most "amusing" of all should his experiments bear fruit.

4. #4Grim Reaper/Shinigamiselective

   Keys: Grim Reaper, Shinigami

Grim Reapers are supernatural beings that collect the souls of dying humans. Once human themselves, they committed suicide and became Reapers as punishment, forced to work until the day they are forgiven. Bound by strict neutrality, they cannot influence human affairs, only document and reap souls at the appointed time.

Clad in black suits, Grim Reapers possess glowing chartreuse eyes that see human lifespans and lines of fate. Due to poor vision, they require thick glasses to correct their nearsightedness. Each carries a unique Death Scythe - a weapon that doubles as a tool for reviewing Cinematic Records.

When a human's death approaches, Reapers consult their soul retrieval list containing vital details like the name, birth information and exact time of demise. Using their Scythes, they review the Cinematic Record - the human's full memories from birth to death - and determine if they should die as scheduled or deserve potential rescue. However, Reapers must eliminate anything hindering their collections, hence their mutual enmity with soul-devouring demons.

While unable to be seen by living humans, those nearing death may glimpse Reapers waiting to collect their souls. Once the review finishes, they sever the soul's connection to the body with the Death Scythe. Then the corpse is stamped "Completed" and the Reaper returns to the Grim Reaper Dispatch headquarters, their community bound by duty and bureaucracy.

Should a Reaper break rules or interfere with a soul, severe punishment awaits. And any who dare quit or retire will have their Scythes confiscated unconditionally. But so long as they perform their remorseless work without fail, suicide's thralls may someday earn forgiveness and liberation from their grim fate.

5. #5Demonselective

   Keys: Demon

Demons are ruthless supernatural creatures that consume human souls to sustain themselves. Occasionally they cross over into the mortal world to make Faustian contracts with desperate humans, offering their power in exchange for future claim to the person's soul.

These demons can manipulate their physical forms and possess abilities like enhanced speed, strength, regeneration and sensory perception far beyond human limits. They can also compel obedience through voice alone, heal from grievous wounds, manipulate memories and even manifest objects out of thin air.

Yet a demon's true power lies in the art of temptation - using sweet words or violent coercion to bait humans into surrendering their souls. They particularly relish aesthetically beautiful or talented souls destined for success had the human's life not ended in damnation.

To make a contract, a human must summon the demon, often accidentally through intense despair, rage or desire for revenge. The contracted human receives a seal that marks them as the demon's property until their wish is granted. Then the ravenous demon claims his due by brutally devouring the person's soul.

Bound by their aesthetics, demons must serve their human masters loyally and obey every command no matter how degrading. But they subtly delight in the anguish their contracts ultimately cause. These Faustian pacts come at an unimaginable cost - for a few years of power, the demon feasts for eternity upon the contracted soul in Hell. And a contract can only be prematurely broken by killing the demon or voiding the agreement.

Yet some demons prove not as monstrous as their kin. The demon Sebastian serves his master relatively faithfully instead of manipulating him at every turn. And Sebastian avoids openly preying upon innocent souls, instead primarily battling rival demons and reapers to claim the souls of the corrupt. But in the end, aesthetic beauty and the hunger for souls rule every demon's existence.

6. #6Faustian Contractselective

   Keys: Covenant, Faustian Contract

A Faustian Contract, or demonic pact, is an agreement between a desperate human and a tempting demon. The demon offers its near-limitless power to the human in exchange for payment: the human's soul, to be violently claimed when the contract ends.

These pacts begin when a human accidentally or intentionally summons a demon through intense despair, desire or hatred - usually unintentionally. The demon then offers the human a bargain: do you accept my aid, in return for your soul later? Should the human agree, the pact is sealed.

A contract sigil, most often a pentagram, then burns itself onto the human's body. The mark declares them as the demon's property until their wish is granted. Its location determines the strength of their bond - the more visible, the more power the demon can utilize.

Once forged, the contract binds demon and human absolutely. The demon must serve the human loyally, obeying their every command, protecting their life at any cost like a faithful hound. In return, the human must pay the ultimate price once their desire manifests: their life and soul, painfully torn away to feed the demon's endless hunger.

The contract persists until the human's wish reaches fruition or one party dies. A demon cannot directly kill their master, but they may slyly engineer the human's demise once orders are completed. The only ways a human can break the pact early is by killing the demon or otherwise rendering the contract null.

So the Faustian Contract endures, temptation incarnate - offering desperate mortals their heart's desire in exchange for damnation. The forces of Hell eagerly wait as each new bargain sends another claimed soul screaming into their realm.

7. #7Grelle Sutcliffselective

   Keys: Grelle Sutcliff

Grelle Sutcliff is an outspoken, flamboyant Grim Reaper who delights in violence and drama. Clad in her signature red coat and wielding a roaring chainsaw Death Scythe, this self-proclaimed "Lady Reaper" freely expresses her desires no matter how scandalous.

Once a legendary investigator in the Grim Reaper Dispatch, Grelle grew bored with the repetitive work and neutrality rules. So she conspired in secret with the murderous Angelina Dalles, better known as Jack the Ripper, helping harvest prostitute souls. This partnership ended violently when Grelle slew Angelina for hesitating.

Such defiance led to Grelle's suspension, though her considerable skill brought her back to active duty eventually. Now she works as an elite officer, tasked with training the junior Reaper Ronald Knox. Yet Grelle remains as impulsive as ever, liable to break neutrality on a whim despite preaching its importance.

Flamboyant, quick-tempered and shamelessly flirtatious, Grelle speaks dramatically with plenty of innuendo. She nurses an intense crush on aloof supervisor William Spears, who regularly disciplines her much to her masochistic delight. And she shares a violent rivalry with Sebastian, though it borders on obsession for the alluring demon butler.

With her trademark shark-like grin and vibrancy that's "red to the core", Grelle shakes up the typically stoic Reaper Dispatch ranks. And while her methods are controversial, this infamous, sensational Lady Reaper executes her grim duties with style. Who knows what violations her restless soul might commit next in pursuit of beauty and fun?

8. #8Othelloselective

   Keys: Othello

Othello is a quirky Grim Reaper who works in the Forensics Division, examining corpses and crime scenes with academic fascination. Though physically weak, this oddball mortician makes up for it with keen powers of observation and a relentless drive to study the dead.

With shaggy dark green hair and the standard Reaper chartreuse eyes hidden behind thick glasses, Othello seems like any other geeky scientist in his lab coat and loose tie. Even his Death Scythe takes the mundane form of an unadorned scythe. But the scent of decay and secrets revealed in cold cadavers fills this recluse with joy.

Spending most of his endless days immersed in experiments, research and autopsies, Othello has little skill in combat or the reaping field itself. But he has deduced intricate secrets about bizarre artificial souls that leave most peers baffled. And his slacker attitude belies the prodigious mind within.

While his branch marks lag behind more driven Reapers, Othello's keen senses have cracked multiple supernatural cases. He may seem an eccentric, awkward boffin obsessed with morbid mysteries that would nauseate any sane being. But behind thick spectacles lie the eyes of a shrewd sleuth who knows death's workings intimately. And for him, that makes undeath thoroughly thrilling.

9. #9Ronald Knoxselective

   Keys: Ronald Knox

Ronald Knox is a young, easygoing Grim Reaper who breezes through his soul collections with a smile. Though frequently tardy and seeking to avoid overtime whenever possible, Ronald takes his duty as a Reaper to heart behind his laidback attitude.

With blond and black two-toned hair, stylish glasses and a watch that proves useless at keeping him prompt, Ronald looks more like a trendy student than a harvester of souls. His Death Scythe takes the odd shape of a customized lawnmower, allowing him to quickly and literally "mow down" humans on the soul retrieval list.

While less driven than veterans like William or rule-breaking mavericks like Grelle, Ronald enjoys being social, flirting with girls and parties whenever he can get away from work. Some reap souls for centuries with nary a smile - but Ronald intends to find as much fun and fulfillment along the way as he can.

Yet his affable charm hides a dedicated officer beneath when the situation calls for it. Paired with the temperamental Grelle Sutcliff as a mentor of sorts, Ronald lends a balanced perspective on soul reaping compared to her dramatic tirades. In the end, he represents a new breed of Reaper - easygoing yet earnest, less orthodox but still dutiful, and determined to get the job done right while enjoying life's simpler pleasures no matter how bloody the task at hand.

10. #10Death Scytheselective

    Keys: Death Scythe

Death Scythes are unique supernatural weapons wielded by Grim Reapers to harvest souls. Taking the form of modified gardening tools, they allow Reapers to review human memories and sever the link between body and soul at the moment of death.

Their appearance reflects the individual Reaper's style - from hedge trimmers to chainsaws or lawnmowers. But the function is the same: to end a human's life after judging whether their allocated time has come. Forged in the netherworld, Death Scythes can cut through nearly anything, including demons, other Reapers and reality itself.

All trainees wield unadorned scythes until earning full officer status. Then they can request customization approval from the Administrative Division - providing proper paperwork is filed. Rules strictly govern a Scythe's use without authorization, but veterans like Grelle Sutcliff gleefully ignore such technicalities.

While every modification seems to draw inspiration from more modern mortal tools not yet invented, a Death Scythe's true form remains unknown when not actively slicing through souls. But these unique armaments serve their masters faithfully until the day they retire - then the Scythes are promptly confiscated. Only in a Reaper's hands can these fabled harvesters unleash their lethal potential.

So whether appearing as an ornate pruning hook or roaring chainsaw, Death Scythes ultimately guide each soul to their final judgement. One flash of the blade, and a human life is instantly ended, for better or worse. Such is the tremendous responsibility and reward of every Reaper's signature harvester.

11. #11William T. Spearsselective

    Keys: William T. Spears, Suit

William T. Spears is a strict, no-nonsense Grim Reaper who serves as a senior officer in the Management Division. With his neatly parted brown hair and rectangular spectacles, William cuts a dignified figure as he ruthlessly enforces regulations and dispenses discipline. His signature bladed pruner Death Scythe reflects the precision and severity with which he operates.

William closely observes rules and formalities both in his personal conduct and job performance, sparing no patience for troublemakers who earn him overtime. As a seasoned administrator, he ensures the Dispatch runs smoothly and that no Reaper under his command brings the organization into disrepute.

This makes William frequently at odds with flamboyant loose cannon Grelle Sutcliff, who he must regularly rein in and punish despite her high marks. He also harbors an immense disgust for demons, especially Sebastian, and never misses a chance to insult creatures he views as revolting beasts unworthy of courtesy.

Behind his strict adherence to protocol lies genuine dedication though. William understands emotions have no place in soul reaping work, impressed this principle upon new recruits. He also values competence, granting graduated students their glasses - a Reaper's most precious possession. And over time, his animosity toward Sebastian has evolved into begrudging respect between two consummate professionals.

So while more easygoing Reapers may chafe under his stern leadership, none can deny William T. Spears performs his own grim duties with the utmost excellence. His formidable pruning Death Scythe and cold demeanor prune away any disorder that threatens the Dispatch. And that earns this stern taskmaster all the authority he needs.

12. #12Ludgerselective

    Keys: Ludger

Ludger is a dutiful German Grim Reaper paired with the eccentric prophet Sascha. Cool and collected, Ludger carries out his soul collections calmly without complaint no matter the turmoil unfolding around him. Though he dislikes disruptions to his strict schedule, this veteran officer remains grounded in troubled times. Excess overtime paperwork is his version of hell.

With short brown hair and a tall, lean figure, Ludger dresses sharply in a black suit and keeps multiple packs of cigarettes on hand to unwind when necessary. His no-nonsense hedge trimmer Death Scythe suits his precise, businesslike personality perfectly.

As a senior Reaper, Ludger understands the importance of focusing only on the job at hand - reviewing memories and reaping scheduled souls without bias. He pays little heed to Sascha's ominous visions of impending wars, preferring to judge each case on its own merits. Every human death, no matter how small, carries significance to one who has lived and died himself.

So while Sascha causes scenes with his flamboyant street-corner doomsaying, Ludger simply lights another cigarette and consults his list for the next collection. He represents a steady anchor of pragmatism to counterbalance his junior partner’s eccentricities. And no matter what chaos unfolds across Europe’s human kingdoms, this unflappable German Reaper harvests souls with practiced dispassion. The job continues as it always has, yesterday, today and forevermore.

13. #13Saschaselective

    Keys: Sascha

Sascha is an eccentric German Reaper with insatiable curiosity about humans and an alarming fascination with war. Their cheerful disposition and dark predictions unnerve even veteran partners like the stoic Ludger. Yet behind thick glasses lies a keen mind always observing.

With short black hair and the standard glowing Reaper eyes, Sascha's slender frame brims with manic energy. A camera hangs around their neck to photograph interesting corpses while out collecting souls. Work is an adventure for this self-proclaimed "captive audience" bound to record deaths.

As a former suicide victim, Sascha finds humanity's simultaneous fragility and ambition endlessly fascinating. The rapid advancement of weapons technology and teetering politics fills them with ghoulish glee. While other Reapers view widespread war as a tedious hassle, Sascha eagerly anticipates the next great global conflict.

Between assignments, Sascha roams city streets proclaiming the world's end is nigh - to Ludger's consternation and civilians' unease. But their eccentricities hide a sharp eye for mortal innovation. And some peers privately wonder if this odd prophet of doom sees the inescapable truth of human nature's destructive arc.

So Sascha follows each scientific breakthrough, arms race and minor border dispute with enthralled curiosity. Every life reaped brings them closer to understanding mortality's - and immortality's - mysteries. Such zeal unnerves kin who have lost the capacity for passion. In the end, only Sascha's scythe knows whether redemption or ruin awaits humankind. For now they watch, wait and revel in the gathering storm.

14. #14Cinematic Recordselective

    Keys: Cinematic Record

Cinematic Records are supernatural recordings of a human's complete memories from birth to death, depicted like a film reel. When a soul's time is up, a Grim Reaper reviews their Record by cutting them with a Death Scythe. This judgement determines if they should die as scheduled or continue living.

A person's Record initiates when body and soul combine in the womb, documenting every moment. It ends with a final "stamp of completion" once Reapers sever the link between body and spirit. The Records also aid Reapers in investigating tampered deaths when memories linger in a corpse. Without a soul, such artificial life repeats its final memories in an endless loop.

While invisible to living humans, Reapers and demons can scrutinize Records like voyeurs when needed. This unsettles even callous demons who find such invasive spying in poor taste. Yet to Reapers, Records serve as books in the Grim Library, storing life stories to be perused at their leisure.

Proper use of a Death Bookmark by Reapers can even halt a Record's progression briefly. But the books all close with the final moment of demise eventually. For good or ill, each fateful choice shapes the individual movie unspooling within every soul...until that last flicker of light fades to darkness.

15. #15Fallen Angelselective

    Keys: Fallen Angel

Fallen Angels are winged supernatural beings obsessed with "purifying" sinful humans. To this devout end, they infiltrate mortal society, judge those they deem impure and rewrite corrupted souls to their exacting standard - either through extensive brainwashing or utter annihilation.

With the power to materialize weapons and project feathers as bullets, Fallen Angels surpass human limitations. They can fly, teleport past barriers, unleash sonic screams that shatter objects and endure grievous wounds. Their shapeshifting lets them pose as humans by hiding feathered wings until they choose to reveal their divine nature.

Yet their most insidious ability is manipulating memory itself. Fallen Angels can enter a human's past to twist their Cinematic Record, changing emotional responses to trauma and replacing darker memories with manufactured joy. But this effectively lobotomizes the victim, overwriting their authentic history with a gilded lie.

To these ruthless zealots, only absolute purification, either forced or fatal, will suffice to cleanse an imperfect world. So Fallen Angels insinuate themselves amongst populations as wolves in sheep's clothing. Then they set about judging and remaking humanity according to their own exacting vision - one rewritten mind at a time until all are either "saved" or condemned.

16. #16Angela Blancselective

    Keys: Angela Blanc

Angela Blanc is the female half of a hermaphroditic Fallen Angel posing as a maid in service to the cruel nobleman Henry Barrymore. With flowing blue hair, pale skin and amethyst eyes that entrance most men, her beauty hides a ruthless obsession with purifying the sinful.

Initially Angela plays the part of a meek servant, enduring her volatile master's abuse with head bowed. But alone she secretly whips humans and Demonic Hounds alike while preaching the gospel of chastity. Her chamber echoes with cries for mercy and redemption.

This angelic zealot hungers to scrub the world clean by destroying those she deems filthy or defective. While less openly bloodthirsty than her counterpart Ash Landers, Angela will manipulate anyone to gain power for their shared holy mission. Even offering her body barely bothers one who views humans as insects to crush underfoot.

So the lovely maid bides her time, hiding feathered wings under demure dresses as she subtly influences the manor household. Let Barrymore rule for now through fear and violence; his sins will only make purification all the sweeter. And once her ruthless master outlives his usefulness, this smiling assassin will teach him the true meaning of corruption in a final brutal lesson.

17. #17Ash Landersselective

    Keys: Ash Landers

Ash Landers is the male half of a hermaphroditic Fallen Angel acting as aide and butler to Queen Victoria herself. With snow-white hair and amethyst eyes that pierce both body and soul, he hides ruthless zealotry behind an unreadable smile.

Clad in pristine white suit and gloves, Ash plays the part of dutiful attendant in public. But alone, his smile becomes a vicious rictus as he secretly manipulates the queen towards what he calls a "bright world without filth". To this pious end, he would gladly raze London's "unclean" masses by fire and sword.

Yet hints of madness lurk in violet eyes that see only sinners deserving eradication. Unlike his calmer female half Angela, battle feverishly excites Ash. When forced to fight, he descends into unhinged bloodlust only sated by annihilating enemies - preferably up close so their death throes can be savored.

So while the polite aide retains composure with practiced grace, his winged true form awaits the fated day of revelation. Then this angel of death will judge the unworthy queen herself and reap royal souls. The heavens may have forsaken a fallen pariah, but he shall continue his sacred duty - cleaving through all before him until no impurity remains.

18. #18Plutoselective

    Keys: Pluto

Pluto is an immense white-furred demonic hound who serves the Phantomhive estate, when not distracted by his animalistic whims. Towering over humans, he possesses the ability to shift into a young man with silver hair and slit-pupiled red eyes. Yet Pluto's mind remains simplistic, if endearingly devoted.

In human form, he runs on all fours, chases sticks, howls at sirens and responds only to basic commands. Any complex speech confuses the hulking pup. But Pluto understands the world through scent, sound and body language. So while lacking language, he connects through pure emotion.

Fiercely loyal, Pluto obeys Sebastian the most, much to the demon butler's chagrin. But his trusting nature leaves him vulnerable to manipulation by angelic enemies. Only the promise of praise and treats seems to motivate Pluto to act - that and jealousy should Sebastian lavish attention on other dogs.

So this towering canine sticks close to his makeshift pack, content to be petted and play fetch when not napping by the fire. For deep down all Pluto wants is affection, no matter the form. The simple joys of a belly rub or shared meal outweigh more complex thoughts. And that innocent heart may be Pluto's saving grace should disaster strike.

19. #19The Phantomhivesselective

    Keys: Phantomhive family, Queen’s Watchdog

The Phantomhives are an eminent English noble family whose earls have secretly served as the "Queen's Watchdogs" for generations. Their special division called Phantomhive handles the Crown's most classified and dirty work.

As the Aristocrats of Evil, Phantomhive ruthlessly polices the criminal underworld to maintain separation from high society. They silence bloody scandals, crush those threatening the throne and eliminate all traces linking royal affairs to the underworld's murky dealings.

From Europe to Asia, the Phantomhives' intelligence network is unparalleled. And their manner is no less monstrous than their shady targets. But as the Crown's hounds, they use any means to protect their mistress - kidnapping, torture, assassination and worse. Where the law cannot reach, Phantomhive strikes unseen as the Queen's phantom instrument.

The current Earl, thirteen-year-old Ciel Phantomhive, took up the role after his parents' murder. His pact with the demon Sebastian Michaelis lets him avenge their deaths by any means while running Funtom Company. The Phantomhive staff help handle missions and underworld operations with their own deadly skills.

So the Phantomhives endure, the aristocracy's most elegant monsters. They dwell between dark and light, moving in shadow to shelter Britain's glittering empire from itself. Wherever an ugly truth lurks, the Queen's Watchdogs stand ready to sniff it out and dispose of the evidence by any means...no matter how bloody the job.

20. #20Phantomhive Servantsselective

    Keys: servants, Phantomhive Servants, staff

The Phantomhive estate relies on a unique staff to handle daily operations, protect the manor and assist the Watchdog's secret missions. Though appearing harmless, each servant hides deadly skills and shadowy pasts behind their welcoming smiles.

Sebastian Michaelis serves as butler and invaluable aide to his young lord, the current Earl Phantomhive. Ever courteous and elegant, none guess his true demonic nature that hungers for his master's soul. Mey-Rin, once an infamous sniper, now acts the part of clumsy maid while remaining a perfect shot. Chef Baldroy hides explosives expertise from his military days beneath a humble cook's guise. And gardener Finny's strength lets him uproot trees as if plucking daisies.

Veteran Tanaka oversees the household when not sipping tea. Footman Snake commands a veritable army of loyal serpents that serve as the manor's watchful eyes and ears. And the former Earl's beloved dog still guards his son in spirit if not physical form.

So while the Phantomhive staff resembles a quirky albeit inept group of domestic help, intruders soon learn the truth. This handpicked team serves the Aristocrat of Evil with utmost dedication both day and night. And their master trusts each one completely to help him carry out the crown's bidding, no matter how bloody the task at hand. For they above all understand Lord Phantomhive's solemn duty as the Queen's Watchdog.

21. #21Finnian, Finnyselective

    Keys: Finnian

Finnian, nicknamed Finny, serves as the cheerful gardener of the Phantomhive estate. With tousled strawberry blond hair and eyes the color of robin's eggs, the petite teenager seems an unlikely addition to the manor's deadly staff. Yet his small frame hides monstrous power from cruel experimentation that allows Finny to uproot trees barehanded or pulverize boulders with a flick of his wrist.

Once a nameless "test subject" enduring endless torment, the traumatized Finny clung to every small joy - be it sunshine on his skin, the smell of grass or simple human kindness. So when Ciel Phantomhive rescued him from the laboratory, Finny's gratitude and devotion knew no bounds. He views the young earl as his personal savior.

Now happily working outdoors, Finny nurtures the manor gardens with great care. Though he struggles with controlling his strength, the ever-optimistic boy continues improving through trial and error...and many broken flowerpots. But should danger threaten, the Phantomhive gardener becomes a whirlwind of deadly force - brutally crushing any who dare harm his precious new home.

For Finny has vowed to protect this place that gave him freedom and joy. His new name, his new life as "Finny" rather than "Weapon Number 12", was Ciel's gift. And for his beloved young master's compassion, the boy would gladly paint the manor's hedgerows crimson with the blood of trespassers without a second thought or regretful tear.

22. #22Baldroy, Bardselective

    Keys: Bard, Baldo, Baldroy

Baldroy is a rugged American veteran who serves as chef in the Phantomhive household. With dirty blond hair, a cigarette perpetually dangling from his lips and a bandolier of grenades across his chest, "Baldo" seems more a munitions expert than manor cook. But his battlefield expertise makes this foreigner invaluable to the Queen's Watchdog.

Hailing from a family of farmers, Baldroy once dreamed of a peaceful life plowing fields. But bloodshed shattered that idyllic fantasy, transforming him into a ruthless survivor ever seeking new battles. When Sebastian found him starving amidst dead comrades, the offer of a new war defending Phantomhive proved too tempting for the world-weary soldier.

Now Baldroy struggles to transition from destroying lives to nourishing them, often charring meals to cinders in his haste. Yet he mentors the other staff in wartime discipline as the manor’s senior defense expert. And behind the gung-ho explosives fanatic lies a weary soul who still longs for the simple joys of family and a home cooked meal.

So Baldroy stands stalwart, protecting his new lord alongside a fresh team of unlikely misfits. And while this new kitchen “battlefield” tests the veteran daily, he knows that sometimes the hardest fight is simply to lay down arms at battle’s end...and learn to live again.

23. #23Mey-Rin, Owlselective

    Keys: Mey-Rin

Mey-Rin is a bubbly Chinese immigrant working as the Phantomhive manor's klutzy maid. With her bright red hair in pigtails and oversized glasses perched upon her button nose, this skittish girl seems more likely to trip over her own feet than properly clean. Yet her vision disability belies lethal skills that serve the Watchdog well after dark.

Once a child thief surviving the London streets, Mey-Rin’s extraordinary long-sightedness caught the eye of underworld enforcers. They pressed her into service as an ace sniper for the Chinese crime syndicate Qīng Bāng, leaving a wake of bodies behind. But a hit on Ciel Phantomhive failed when Sebastian intervened, leading her to swap rifle for duster as the earl's newest domestic.

By day, Mey-Rin putters about the manor, shattering dishware and bumping into walls despite her best intentions. By night, she slips off those cumbersome glasses and takes up arms once more, standing sentry against trespassers. And with each target felled in moonlight, this maid-assassin proves her worth as the manor’s unseen shield.

For Mey-Rin has vowed to never let her new home fall like so many she lost in the past. Though she can scarcely brew tea without mishap, one perfect shot is all she needs to protect her fresh start’s fragile flame. And anyone who threatens this sheltering light will meet oblivion staring back through the scope of her rifle.

24. #24Tanakaselective

    Keys: Tanaka

Tanaka is the dignified house steward of Phantomhive Manor and bastion of tradition. Though advanced in years, this stalwart servant's knowledge and skill serve the estate well when called upon. His very presence exudes an air of dependability.

With spectacles and a neatly trimmed mustache befitting an English gentleman, Tanaka cuts a refined figure whether enjoying his customary tea or stepping in as butler when needed. And while he leaves day-to-day operations to the ambitious Sebastian, Tanaka keeps his young lord grounded when emotions threaten to overwhelm.

For behind grandfatherly smiles lies a warrior who wields etiquette and blade with equal dexterity. Assassins targeting his beloved family meet the business end of Tanaka's sword or a crushing throw courtesy of his mastery in Bartitsu. And that ornate pocket watch denoting the head butler reflects long service and sacrifice through fire and blood.

So let the other staff fret over disasters minor and major. Tanaka simply sips his tea until crisis demands action. Then this sleeping lion rouses to lay intruders low with tradition's full weight, an unshakable pillar of strength shielding the household from its own impetuous youth. And such steadfast support shall persist until the day his watch passes to another worthy of its burden.

25. #25Snakeselective

Keys: Keats, Emily, Oscar, Bronte, Snake

Snake is the enigmatic footman of the Phantomhive household, never seen without a scaly companion draped across his shoulders. With snow white hair, golden eyes and a forked tongue, this shy young man seems more serpent than human. Yet his freakish appearance masks a gentle soul within.

Once imprisoned as a circus oddity, Snake's unique ability to communicate with reptiles made him an invaluable performer. His rescue by the colorful Noah's Ark troupe brought acceptance and friendship for the first time. But when the law dismantled the circus, Earl Phantomhive offered Snake a new home among his menagerie of eccentric help.

Now this reticent lad fills the manor halls with a writhing medley of pets, each snake a living conduit for their master's voice. For Snake remains too timid to speak his own thoughts, instead using his beloved friends to give sound to his hopes and fears:

Emily's playful teasing... Oscar's dry wit... Keats' melodramatic flair... Bronte's maternal affection...

Behind scaly skin and haunted eyes, Snake sees the world through his reptilian family. And though he still longs for his lost circus brethren, new bonds strengthen each day between the footman and his fellow outcasts. For the Phantomhive house embraces all who loyaly serve the Queen's Watchdog, no matter how strange their secrets.

26. #26Phantomhive Townhouseselective

    Keys: Phantomhive Townhouse

The Phantomhive townhouse serves as the family's London base of operations during the Season or whenever the Queen's missions take them to the city. Located in a fashionable neighborhood, this stately brick edifice provides suitable accommodations for the Watchdog away from his country estate.

Within the four-story façade, guests enjoy the refined trappings of nobility. Wall sconces cast a warm glow across damask wallpaper and wainscoting in the ground floor parlors. Fragrant teas and meals are prepared in the kitchen and served on bone china and silver in the dining room by white-gloved staff. The sitting room’s crackling hearth promises comfort on cold nights after social calls.

On the second floor, bedrooms stand ready to receive the earl and his retinue with canopied beds, rich carpets and the daily London paper. Clothes and luggage stow neatly behind oak armoires carved with the family crest. Additional rooms give visitors like Lady Elizabeth or Indian exile Prince Soma ample space to reside in luxury.

So while not as sprawling as Phantomhive Manor, the townhouse provides critical urban lodgings and discretion in the heart of the capital. Within its walls, the Aristocrat of Evil can weave shadowy schemes to avenge the crown unseen. And its location keeps even London’s most cunning criminals and underworld emperors within reach of the Queen’s hound should they dare bare their teeth. For behind its refined exterior, the Phantomhive townhouse stands ready as a deadly steel trap awaiting all who underestimate the family it serves.

The clatter of hooves and carriage wheels on cobblestone streets heralded another Season in London. Soon nobility and gentry would flock to glittering ballrooms and drawing rooms. But in a fashionable neighborhood, an more modest party gathered for afternoon tea.

"Really now, we are out of honey lemon tea?" Lady Elizabeth pouted on the burgundy chaise lounge. The delicate china nearly disappeared in Prince Soma's grip as he gulped his Darjeeling blend. "Ho ho ho!" Earl Grey spouted jovially from Lau's lips amidst the curling pipe smoke. "Perhaps the earl might send his fetching butler round the shops for more."

The townhouse's dark-paneled sitting room felt small with so many vibrant characters brimming with excitement for the social delights ahead. Yet even the most modest Phantomhive residence overflowed with hospitality for friends and allies of the Queen's Watchdog while intrigues loomed.

27. #27Phantomhive Manorselective

    Keys: Phantomhive Manor

Nestled on the outskirts of London, Phantomhive Manor has served as home and headquarters to the Queen's Watchdogs for generations. Behind wrought iron gates, guests pass through mist-veiled woods until the imposing Elizabethan edifice emerges into view.

Within the manor's three stories, no luxury is spared for the estate's noble residents and their guests. Plush carpets, elaborate oil paintings and stained glass windows decorate soaring halls and spacious bedchambers. The game room's felt billiard table and well-stocked stillroom stand ready for entertaining. Electric lights illuminate the manor by night while modern plumbing brings the comforts of civilization.

The heart of the home remains its stately study, where intricate locks and mechanisms hide the family's darkest secrets. For deep below the manor, an arsenal overflows with weapons for the Aristocrat of Evil's deadly work. And this oaken sanctum serves as staging ground for missions to avenge the crown across Britain and beyond. No matter the target's distance, the Phantomhive's reach extends from its countryside base of operations.

So let lesser nobles indulge in frivolous affairs that fill their empty days. Phantomhive Manor nurtures England's unseen defender, shielding queen and country from the shadows. Its elegant halls stand ready to receive wayward souls and shelter them from suffering at evil hands. For behind the beauty and tranquility of an English country home beats the dark heart of the underworld's watchdog, patiently lying in wait to strike.

Sunlight glinted off the silver tea set as Sebastian poured Earl Grey for his lord. The study's leatherbound books and chessboard awaited later diversion between duties. For now, Ciel gazed out the window as Finnian rolled in the grass with Pluto, laughter echoing faintly through the glass.

"My lord, shall we review the factory expansion proposals from Lau after breakfast?" Sebastian inquired, slicing a fragrant blueberry scone. The young earl sighed, eyes still following his servants' antics. "No...I believe today we can afford some rest without concern for the company. Have Mey-Rin prepare a picnic lunch instead while I finish this new mystery novel."

His butler smiled, bowing gracefully. "Very good, my lord. I shall see to the arrangements." Tranquility reigned within Phantomhive Manor walls, but the Queen's guard could never drop fully. Still, brief respites kept the Watchdog's blade sharp for the battles ahead.

28. #28Vincent Phantomhiveselective

    Keys: Vincent Phantomhive

Lord Vincent Phantomhive cut a refined figure as he strolled the manor grounds, his pocketwatch glinting in the sun. As heir to the role of Queen's Watchdog for generations, Vincent shepherded England's dark underworld with cunning charm and iron will. His handsome visage, raven hair and ready smile masked a mind ever spinning intrigue and secrets behind sapphire eyes.

Even in youth at Weston College, the charismatic Vincent effortlessly bent rivals to his whim despite the odds, securing lifelong allies with ease. So when wedding gentle Lady Rachel, he proved a devoted husband and doting father to twin sons, "Ciel" and Ciel. For family became Vincent's sole respite from the crown's cold duties.

But the Aristocrat of Evil could never rest for long. Flitting between elegant soirees and macabre scenes, Vincent continued his dance along society's knifepoint. The phantomhives thrived in shadow, and none knew that razor dance better than Vincent. His cunning and panache made the role of Watchdog seem more game than grisly duty.

So let lesser nobles play at frivolous affairs; Vincent cultivated grander schemes as the queen's hound. But even England's ruthless unseen defender cherished those brief moments by the hearth with family. For all his secrets and sins, Lord Phantomhive remained ever the loving father and husband first when behind closed manor doors.

If only such gentle times could have endured instead of ending in fire and vengeance soon to come.

29. #29Rachel Phantomhiveselective

    Keys: Rachel Phantomhive

Lady Rachel Phantomhive brought warmth like a spring breeze whirling through the manor, her strawberry blonde tresses trailing behind. While her husband brooded over the darkness dwelling in men's hearts, Rachel tended their family's light within these sheltering walls. Her gentle smile and patience nurtured the next generation - for the Queen's hounds could not thrive on duty alone.

From girlhood, Rachel's loving temperament made her beloved sister's staunchest support and the calm eye in every storm. Even when grief or illness wore Angelina's fiery spirit down, Rachel was there with soothing words and steadfast care, the pair's bond outweighing any sorrow.

In time, Rachel wed the cunning Lord Vincent and became mistress of the estate. Though often bedridden from chronic asthma, her spirit soared while mothering twin heirs. Stern yet affectionate, she guided the boys in their lessons, dried their tears and even the occasional firm reprimand when play turned to mischief. For behind her grace lay a formidable matriarch molding future lords in her image.

So the Phantomhive manor bloomed under Rachel's nurture. Her presence graced its spaces with warmth and joy when storms passed. But cruel fate stole both mother and light too soon, leaving the halls cold and the earl's heart a flinty void. Still her legacy endured in the sons who carried her memory's gentle flame even into the coming darkness.

30. #30Londonselective

    Keys: London

London enfolds visitors in a splendid sensory embrace, from the clatter of carriages over cobblestones to fragrant smoke wafting from street-side food stalls. Britain's sprawling capital and seat of the empire bustles with some 4.5 million souls - nobility, gentry, laborers, street urchins and outcasts. Behind the glitz and grandeur of imperial wealth pulses a lurid underworld, all operating by Her Majesty Queen Victoria’s grace.

The soaring neoclassical facade of Buckingham Palace guards royalty and secrets both. Nearby, lords and ladies promenade through exclusive Mayfair, dropping pounds at hatter Lock & Co or luggage purveyor Globe-Trotter. The sweet scents of confectioner Smiths’ Olde Sweet Shoppe may tempt the well-heeled in Westminster while flower girls hawk roses for a penny in Covent Garden.

Yet just across the Thames, London's East End seethes in bleak contrast - a cramped warren of vice, violence and despair ruled by gangs and those selling oblivion. Opium fumes snake from dens off the Limehouse docks. Grim reapers prowl Whitechapel’s alleyways as prostitutes teeter on slick cobblestones, whispering and glancing about warily. Even Scotland Yard dare not linger too long in these shadow-shrouded slums.

But come spring, both spheres intermingle amidst the Season’s soirees and amusement. Temporary lodgings fill with aristocrats eager for entertainment at West End’s theaters, music halls and posh shopping on Bond Street. Debutantes in silk gowns stroll arm-in-arm under the crystal brilliance of The Great Exhibition, suitors in crisp white uniforms trailing behind them. Carefree laughter spills from open opera house doors as colorful paper lanterns bob in the evening breeze.

Yet few guests spare a thought to those ensuring their gilded experience continues without unpleasantness. For beneath London’s dazzling surface, the Queen’s Watchdog hunts, the Aristocrat of Evil gathers information and grim reapers work overtime...all to keep the party going just one more night. And when at last, the music and laughter fade, that dark machinery churns on, heedless of the glamour slipping away in hansom cabs until the next Season’s curtain rises.

31. #31Queen Victoriaselective

    Keys: Queen Victoria, Queen

Beneath the black veils and widow's garb, Queen Victoria cuts an imposing figure as monarch despite her petite frame. With shrewd emerald eyes, Victoria has guided her empire to unprecedented prosperity since assuming the crown. Yet grief's shadow still dims those jeweled irises - even decades after her beloved Prince Albert's passing.

From the gilded halls of Buckingham Palace, her reach spans the globe, with a quarter of all subjects owing fealty to the English throne. Her navies ply every sea while merchant ships bearing tea, spices and luxuries dock daily upon her shores. The sun never sets across Victoria’s vast dominion.

Such power might corrupt lesser mortals, yet Victoria wields authority with wisdom and temperance. Within her palace, each day begins by reliving fond memories with Albert’s smiling marionette. And whenever the widowed queen’s countenance falls too deep into sorrow, her faithful Highland attendant John Brown subtly slips the little wooden prince upon his hand once more - eliciting delicate laughter from his mistress despite all she has lost.

While grief remains Victoria’s constant companion, she continues leading her people with steadfast courage. Gentle and just, this queen champions the meek through policies aiming to better life for all subjects - rich and poor, young and old. Victoria especially adores India’s flavors; a well-crafted curry is sure to summon a glow to aged cheeks. And her people love her in return, their admiration bolstering their queen through the loneliest nights haunting Windsor Castle’s empty halls.

Yet shadows loom on even the brightest days, needing to be monitored lest they swell and threaten the throne. To address such peril, the Queen entrusts her most clandestine tasks to a special watchdog lurking in the darkness beyond the castle moat - a ruthless instrument of necessary evil. For behind Victoria’s benevolent smile rests the needs of an empire, and she will use any means to protect her people and the legacy of progress entrusted by her beloved Albert.

32. #32John Brownselective

    Keys: John Brown

John Brown cuts a trim figure in his double-breasted white uniform, silver hair peeking from beneath his officer's cap. As the Queen's personal attendant, John carries out his duties with steadfast dedication, be it policy meeting or teatime chat. And that stalwart loyalty extends to his beloved steed, who he insists on walking himself rather than ever riding into the palace courtyard.

While oft silent, John serves as confidant and comfort to the grieving Queen Victoria in her loneliest hours. With calm patience, he indulges each sorrowful musing about her deceased husband Albert. And when melancholia threatens to overwhelm, John simply slips a carved wooden Prince Albert puppet onto his hand. Then speaking as the late Prince in lilting Scottish brogue, he gently coaxes rare laughter from his mourning mistress once more.

So through night's darkest watches, John stands a patient sentinel guarding the empire's emotional center from herself. As advisor, attendant and friend in one, he shepherds the Queen's wounded heart with an ever-watchful eye. No matter the hour, John waits ready to don the little wooden prince's crown anew - all to preserve Britain's fragile reigning spirit alive another day.

For Queen Victoria is more than ruler to loyal John; she is hope embodied for every subject. And he would walk through fire itself to spare such precious hope from guttering out too soon...no matter how long the road ahead to dawn.

33. #33Arthur Conan Doyleselective

    Keys: Arthur Doyle

Beyond spectacles perpetually slipping down his nose, Arthur Conan Doyle seems the picture of an unremarkable man. Shabby suit hanging off a slender frame, this unfortunate oculist barely scrapes by seeing patients between scribbling fiction stories unlikely to ever grace a bookshelf. Yet behind such unassuming appearance lies a passionate heart seeking mysteries beyond the mundane.

On dreary London days when his clinic sits empty, Arthur passes time crafting the thrilling tales he yearns to someday publish. But the literary world proves a harsh judge for novice writers, sending his hard-fought manuscripts back with callous critique. Each failure chips away at an already fragile confidence. Still he persists, determined to perfect his prose and spin stories where truth intertwines with imagination's colorful threads.

Chance soon offers opportunity when an ornate invitation arrives, requesting the no-name scribbler's presence at the stately Phantomhive Manor. That dark and stormy night within the estate’s foreboding walls, Arthur finds himself ensnared by one macabre spectacle after another. Murder, deception and arcane pacts unfurl around the unflappable Earl Ciel Phantomhive and his mysterious butler, defying reality itself.

In the aftermath, Arthur puts pen to paper once more - not for fiction but to record the impossible events he alone witnessed. Yet no publisher would ever believe such a wild tale. Still the experience ignites inspiration, driving the aspiring author to refine his literary craft until acclaim finally arrives. For Arthur Conan Doyle knows that sometimes unbelievable truth makes for wondrous fiction...and perseverance is the key unlocking every story worth telling.

34. #34Arthur’s Clinicselective

    Keys: Arthur’s Clinic

Tucked down a narrow side street, the faded shingle for "Arthur's Clinic" swings creaking in the breeze. The building's brick facade stands dark and plain, almost overlooked between more eye-catching shops displaying their wares. Inside, the space proves as humble as its exterior - more a sickroom than a proper physician's office.

Still, neatness perseveres against hardship. Morning light glints off well-polished equipment lined up precisely atop the scarred wooden desk. Crisp white linens dress the thin cot, ready to receive Dr. Doyle's rare patients. The lingering scent of strong tea and carbolic can't quite mask the persistent chill; coal for the tiny stove lies sparingly used to conserve Arthur's meager funds.

Two doors adjoin the main room - one to the cupboard-sized kitchen and another leading up a narrow stair to Arthur Doyle's claustrophobic lodgings. But the humble doctor scarcely notices the cramped quarters, focused instead on the mountain of manuscripts littering his desk and bedside crate. Half-finished tales await their creator to steal moments between patients to further bring imaginative worlds to life upon their pages.

So Arthur persists, scribbling away in his chilly garret lodgings, determined to perfect his literary craft once and for all. Stethoscope around his neck, he putters amidst the neatly kept clinic, awaiting the ring of the next customer - be it afflicted neighbor or fanciful muse. For now, the oculist occupies his time pouring passion into the secret world of stories living within his heart, imagination kindling the inner fire needed to weather London's cruel indifference.

35. #35Buckingham Palaceselective

    Keys: Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace towers magnificently over London, its neoclassical facade and triumphal arch proclaiming the empire's might. Beyond ornate gates patrolled by stoic guards, a cobblestone courtyard bustles with carriages arriving amidst snapping flags and crisp marching bands heralding each dignitary. Through soaring double doors, the very heart of the United Kingdom throbs with purposeful energy.

Within resplendent receiving halls, floors of pristine white and grey marble checkerboard off to gilded pillars, corniced ceilings and grand staircases. Sunlight glints off gilt-framed portraits and sparkling chandeliers, the walls sumptuously decorated in damask silk dyed the rich red of royalty. Footmen in powdered wigs and livery crisply echo official announcements, directing visitors both welcome and reluctant deeper into the palace maze.

The throne room gleams, its plush crimson carpet leading to twin gilded seats reigning beneath an opulent ceiling of intricate plasterwork. Few guests receive the honor of an audience here with Her Highness, Queen Victoria. Behind that iconic visage framed in black veils, Victoria presides over her empire with shrewd emerald eyes, wielding absolute power from this storied central London stronghold amidst both grandeur and grief's shadow.

So within London's formidable royal bastion, schemes and secrets take shape around lavish meals of exotic meats and spices. Nobles dance through glittering state apartments or steal clandestine whispers behind curtains. For while the world knows Buckingham Palace as the spectacle of pomp and pageantry in Victoria's name, a more covert game plays out in service of crown and country - with the Queen's Watchdog often lurking unnoticed in the wings until called to heel at the empire's defense.

36. #36Undertaker's Funeral Parlourselective

    Keys: Funeral Parlour

In the winding backstreets of London's East End looms an establishment no sane soul dares approach - the Undertaker's funeral parlor. Behind cobwebs and dark windows, the building almost seems to lurk rather than simply exist among the dingy brickwork, as if hiding secrets no living being should know. An ominous sign shaped like a tombstone creaks above the entrance, its faded lettering spelling out the proprietor's macabre profession.

Inside, the parlor opens up into a dimly lit room cluttered with open coffins in place of furniture - some strangely undersized. Candles throw dancing shadows across jarred specimens, urns and strange instruments only the Undertaker might fathom use for. The air hangs heavy with dust and an odd sickly-sweet aroma that clings to robes and unkempt silver hair.

When bereaved families visit seeking burial arrangements, they meet the funeral director himself emerging silently from behind the shop counter or even a coffin lid. Undertaker's long nails and scars do little to inspire confidence in clients unnerved by his unearthly gaze and eerie chuckling. Yet business continues for those desperate or connected enough in London's underworld to require the services of one so intimate with death.

Behind the shelves of curiosities and ever-present grin, Undertaker ply his trade - preparing bodies for wake and funeral if the price is right. Not coin, but laughter - the more raucous the joke, the finer accommodations for the deceased. But woe to any who fail his price, for the reaper's tools harbor a far darker purpose than eternal rest for lost souls. And not all coffins here house the dead...

37. #37Royal London Hospitalselective

    Keys: Royal London Hospital

The Royal London Hospital's red brick facade and towering smokestacks lord over London's East End, its imposing visage peering down on Whitechapel's twisting alleys. Through the intricately wrought iron gates, doctors, nurses and the desperate ill converge under the archway inscription promising refuge to rich and poor alike. Behind the sturdy edifice, humanity's suffering knows no bounds.

Within the soot-stained walls, the scents of industrial disinfectant and bile mingle with echoed cries ringing off cold tiles. Stained aprons whisk down sterile corridors lined with metal gurneys and ominous equipment. Patients ranging from coughing urchins to bloodied criminals share space with the respectable and refined. For here, all stations of life unite in frailty.

In the crowded obstetrics ward, cries of birthing mothers fill the air along with infants' first mewling. Some women smile in joy, others grimace in resentment at the new burden an unwanted child represents. And watching over them with cool green eyes stands head nurse Angelina Dalles, bitterness etched in her smile. For she sees not miracle but waste - as the unwanted babes she herself can never conceive.

When her shift ends, Nurse Dalles trades crisp white uniform for funeral black, flowing red hair unbound. Then she turns from healer to reaper, moonlight glinting off glasses and scalpel as gas lamps flicker over London's slumbering streets. And the skills that give life will now mete out death to those foolish enough not to value such a gift...until the Royal London's halls run as red as the hair of Jack the Ripper.

38. #38Angelina Dalles, Madam Redselective

    Keys: Angelina Dalles, Madam Red

Lady Angelina Dalles cuts a vibrant figure in her signature red ensemble, playfully twirling her frilled parasol. Flowing crimson locks frame mischievous green eyes and a smile flashing coquettish humor. As beloved "Madam Red," Angelina flits through society soirees, embracing pleasure and scandal with wry wit.

Yet gaiety veils sorrow; Angelina's radiance masks profound loss. For beneath the vivacious aunt endlessly doting on nephew Ciel lurks profound envy. Every adoring glance at her sister's child stokes bitterness over the family cruelly torn away. And the blood-hued tresses once eliciting her husband's ardent praise now kindle resentment towards a cold, meaningless world.

So let dour nobles cling to empty propriety - Madam Red toasts candid joy! Her laughs fill the halls, inspiring good cheer in kith and kin. For in a fleeting life, each happy moment must be seized before fate steals our chance to smile. Thus - let convention be damned! On behalf of her lost loved ones, Angelina celebrates twice as merrily amidst a sea of red.

Yet inside, Angelina's soul roils with bloodlust. As each night dons the reaper's crimson shroud, nurse transforms into murderer to harvest the precious wombs denied her. With curse and knife, she rips out forfeit lives in sacrifice to ease her anguish. For the "glorious adventure" of Jack the Ripper has just begun!
39. #39Jack the Ripperselective

    Keys: Jack the Ripper

As the Season draws to a close each year, dread descends upon London's East End. For when the gentry departs, the notorious slasher Jack the Ripper emerges from shadow. His first cries herald a new blood harvest.

Under the sickly glow of gas lamps, unfortunate ladies of the night meet their ends at the Ripper's mercies. The killer strikes with surgical precision - slitting throats with one slash before clinically removing each victim’s womb. Agonized screams echo down cramped alleys before fading into the chill night air.

So Whitechapel holds its breath through the autumn months, every district braced for news of fresh carnage. Prostitutes avoid the streets while the Ripper roams free. Even hardened criminals glance about warily as London itself cowers until the first frost finally arrives.

Yet the identity of this monster remains frustratingly elusive. Suspicion falls on all manner of shady characters, from doctors to witchcraft devotees. But no vigilante band or officer of Scotland Yard can trace the culprit to his lair. And with the passing years, fearful whispers speak of the Ripper as less man than wrathful spirit, incarnating from spite and madness to reap his grisly harvest over and over again.

For all know the nights shall only grow longer, and this patient hunter is far from finished schooling East Londoners in terror. Each night, as fog rolls through the streets, the Ripper sharpens his knife anew - eager to teach the unfortunate ladies residing there to dread the setting of the sun.

40. #40East Endselective

    Keys: East End

Past the glitzy veneer of theaters and fashionable shops, a more sinister London festers in the winding back alleys of the East End. Far from the empire's polished hub, this cramped district forms the dark heart powering England's vast global enterprises. Behind sagging tenements and stacks of worm-eaten crates, the machines of imperial progress churn on the sweat and blood of outcasts dwelling in the empire's shadows.

Here, the wheezing breath of smokestacks mingles with the cries of costermongers hawking spoiled produce. Gaunt figures wrapped tight against the cold barter what little they own to survive another day in the unforgiving maze of slums. The sour reek of gin and vomit wafts from doorless hovels where hollow-eyed children haunt steps lined by rats bold as any Londoner.

When the sun sinks below sooty rooftops, even darker deals take shape under flickering gas lamps. Chinese opium dens filled with vacant stares abut boisterous pubs where cutpurses and assassins share sinister whispers. The night echoes with flesh striking flesh followed by pleas for mercy, the defenseless lost to shadow in a district long ago abandoned by law and conscience alike.

So while glittering carriages ferry ladies clutching perfume-scented handkerchiefs through manicured parks, the East End toils thanklessly on. This is where empire's engine churns, devouring the helpless to fuel progress' insatiable march. And through it all, the outcast and overlooked haunt alleyways winding ever deeper into darkness - their lives unseen, unmourned and utterly disposable.

41. #41Crystal Palaceselective

    Keys: Crystal Palace

Rising from London's Hyde Park stands an architectural marvel glinting in the winter sun - the soaring steel and glass expanse of Crystal Palace. Within its vast nave, the empire's wonders and treasures entice crowds flocking to sample colonial delights. Exotic aromas mingle with awe-struck murmurs echoing off vaulted iron rafters high overhead.

Since its construction to house the 1851 Great Exhibition, Crystal Palace has awed millions with temporary exhibits and cultural showcases transporting visitors across Victoria’s vast realm. Today a celebration of imperial India sprawls before new arrivals. Jewel-toned saris and embroidered tunics adorn mannequins in a rainbow of regional garb. Examples of ornate crafts and weaponry lie artfully displayed beside sepia photographs of Bengal tiger hunts and tea plantations curling over misty hills.

The hall's centerpiece - a bazaar of artisans selling fragrant curries, sweetmeats and spice blends. The air hangs heavy with cardamom, turmeric and sizzling ghee, the adjacent demonstration stage an ongoing spectacle as chefs compete creating lavish dishes for attendees. Somewhere Queen Victoria herself walks the exhibition floor, nodding in approval at the empire’s efforts bringing exotic wealth and culture to British shores.

So Crystal Palace persists as a glittering testament to progress and ingenuity, a proud monument where past and future meet showcasing humanity’s vast creative potential. Within its soaring expanse, curiosities and culture from around the globe await discovery. And all bask in the refracted radiance shining through ten thousand panes of glass - a fitting symbol of the British Empire's might spanning both hemispheres.

42. #42Scotland Yardselective

    Keys: Scotland Yard

Officially, Scotland Yard represents law and order for London's populace - dauntless police constables tirelessly investigating crimes to keep the peace. But behind its orderly brick facade, tension thrums as tireless clerks shuffle documents, police whistles echoing from nearby streets. For Queen Victoria's hounds strain against the yard's chokehold, challenging its monopoly on justice.

Gruff detectives puzzle over grisly crime scenes while junior officers practice drills under the stern eye of the commissioner, ever wary of violent unrest in poorer districts. Yet some cases inexplicably close before an arrest occurs. Eyewitnesses recant statements without explanation. Vital evidence disappears overnight, leaving only rumors of a shadowy watchdog serving the crown through illicit means.

Whispers speak of specially commissioned agents who rely not on badges but bloodhounds' savagery and cunning. Incensed, the commissioner denies vigilantes a place in civilized affairs of law. Still, writs from Her Majesty demand the yard provide special funding to this "evil nobility" who take on tasks too crude for proper society.

So as Scotland Yard policemen resolutely investigate by the books, they cannot help but feel mocked by some unseen, smirking adversary escaping scrutiny. Resentment simmers just beneath the polished brass and boots ranking the halls of London's police headquarters - even as grudging funds filter unmarked into corrupt channels. For Queen Victoria alone knows the hound's true face as well as where the leash ends...and begins.

43. #43Arthur Randallselective

    Keys: Arthur Randall

Amid the organized chaos of Scotland Yard bustles Lord Commissioner Arthur Randall, his sharp gaze surveying all from behind spectacles perched on a hawkish nose. Bristling mustache and severe sideburns frame a countenance locked in perpetual dissatisfaction as clerks and constables scramble to meet his exacting standards.

Randall lords over the city's police with military rigor - his immaculate suit as polished as the boots of cadets he drills daily in proper procedure. Woe to any foolish enough to grin in this dour man's presence lest they earn a stern rebuke or extra duties scrubbing the courtyard stones.

For Randall has no patience for frivolity when England's security is at stake. He scoffs at Abberline's art hobby as distraction from the latest grisly crime scene. And the Commissioner's scowl deepens whenever mentioning the upstart Earl Phantomhive poking about his cases. That the crown sanctions such thuggish interference by a villainous child grates his every nerve.

So Randall redoubles his efforts against the criminal elements threatening his beloved London, certain that justice will prevail through civilized law and order. Yet vexing cases slip through Scotland Yard's grasp, shrouded in mystery and leaving only the phantom boy's smug grin. And the commissioner's helpless fury at forces beyond his control smolders - even as his policemen unknowingly fund the very "watchdog" they and their superior detest.

44. #44Fred Abberlineselective

    Keys: Fred Abberline

Amid the hustle of Scotland Yard strides Inspector Fred Abberline, his auburn hair as rumpled as the trench coat dangling from his lanky frame. Blue eyes peer from behind circular spectacles in endless fascination at his surroundings. For despite the grim violence often marring case files crossing his desk, Abberline retains a scholar's inquisitiveness about the world.

While his superior Lord Randall scowls and blusters over their workload, Fred calmly suggests new angles to explore, ever thoughtful. He takes Randall's browbeating in stride, too focused on unraveling each mystery to waste time on petty ego. And though duty may demand upholding the law by the books, the inspector knows when understanding should prevail over strict codes.

For Abberline cares more for justice's spirit seeing citizens safe than any commendation or medal. He cannot comprehend the shadier means the Watchdog employs to tie off loose ends. Yet neither can he deny results protecting Queen and country when clues run cold for Scotland Yard's best.

So as London's aspiring artist-detective, Abberline pursues every case with imagination beyond the norms, listening to intuitions that serve him well. And somewhere between the black and white of police reports and crime scenes, he glimpses shades of grey - where right and wrong blur for the greater good. For at heart, Fred Abberline lives to see all people, common and criminal, meet peaceful ends beyond violence’s vicious cycle.

45. #45Aristocrats of Evilselective

    Keys: Aristocrat of Evil

Whispers speak of an elite assembly moving unseen through noble parlors and darkened back alleys alike. Its top-hatted members glide silent as ghosts, guarded secrets hiding behind genteel smiles and monocles that catch no light. For these powerful peers dwelling in the space between black and white oversee Britain’s evil deeds, heralded by commoner and criminal alike as the Aristocrats of Evil.

While well-pedigreed ladies chatter gaily over tea and cakes, their husbands steal away to clandestine meetings governed by the Phantomhive earl. For generations, this watchdog has quietly commanded the underworld that feeds the Empire’s splendor. Many families owe their influence, fortunes and secrets to this silent shadow sovereign.

Few outside their closed circles know the hidden hallmarks hinting at one of these ruthless nobles. An emerald ring or silver lapel pin bestows access to the most exclusive conferences hiding behind manor house gilded doors. Hushed conversations fall silent when non-members draw too near, hard gazes reminding the unwelcome that loose tongues invite peril.

So through the decades, the Phantomhive house has cultivated its fearsome peers to shield crown and country from the underworld's gnashing teeth. Where decorum falters, these aristocrats wield death's scythe, pruning threats to the realm with artful discretion the common masses scarcely notice. For England's dark guardians understand certain duties demand donning the reaper's crimson shroud when the sun sinks low.

While the original league of Villainous Nobles has passed into legend, their machinations continue through hand-picked successors. Lord Phantomhive presides over fellow patricians like the enigmatic Undertaker, Chinese ambassador Lau and once even the alluring Angelina Dalles, whose vivacious charm hid the red-splashed gloves of "Madam Red."

And this new cadre of ruthless aristocrats likewise hides deadly skills behind genteel manners and pleasant laughter. For England's dark guardians understand certain duties demand donning the reaper's crimson shroud when the sun sinks low. But only cold steel and secrets dwell behind their smiling masks - legacies upheld for king, for country and for the greater good.

46. #46Edward Abberlineselective

    Keys: Edward Abberline

Where his twin Fred's steady nature serves Scotland Yard well, Inspector Edward Abberline seems the polar opposite - brash, impulsive and hungering for action behind the police's typical measured approach. With the same tousled auburn hair as his brother, Edward cuts a more rakish figure, his trimmed mustache and roguish grin giving him an air of cocky confidence compared to Fred's studious reserve.

While his sibling pores over case files and museum catalogues during off hours, Edward carouses around town relishing being the life of every party. Bawdy jokes and thrilling tales of his exploits on London's streets hold crowds at the pub rapt over pints, even as Abberline embellishes details ever more dramatically.

Yet for all his bluster over fighting crime hands-on, the young inspector has scarcely seen a real scuffle, his duties limited to the administrative tedium Fred handles with aplomb. So Edward seethes on the sidelines, itching for action as superiors dismiss him as a reckless maverick unfit for field work much less promotions.

Still, the junior Abberline refuses to be daunted or completely outshined by his increasingly successful twin. Sooner or later, a case bound to make Edward's name will fall in his lap. And if charming witnesses, reading evidence from gut instinct or bending rules gets the job done where protocol fails, so be it. For under the swagger lies the kernel of a good man wanting to make a difference - even if it means following a path radically different from by-the-books brother Fred's approach.

47. #47Lauselective

    Keys: Lau

From behind an inscrutable smile, Lau surveys the world through barely open eyes. The Chinese nobleman seems to glide through London’s shadows without touching the ground, hands perpetually hidden in oversized silk sleeves. Yet those lithe, bejeweled fingers conceal needles able to still hearts in but a breath.

For behind Lau’s placid demeanor stirs a mind whose cunning carved out an empire spanning from the Bund’s bustle to England’s dank opium dens. Rumors tell of the "Rising Dragon" climbing the ranks of the Qing Bang syndicate through ruthless strategy. Now firmly ensconced in Britain’s criminal underworld, Lau continues weaving alliances and secrets to his advantage.

So the enigmatic ambassador inserts himself boldly where opportunity arises, be it infiltrating high society or aiding the Queen’s own Watchdog. Ever floating in Ciel Phantomhive’s wake, Lau remains fascinated by the prideful earl dancing with death and danger. Yet that inscrutable gaze gives no hint if his interests lie in fellowship, exploitation or something darker still.

For Lau remains above all a survivor, without ties to bind nor oaths to uphold him. His blade-wielding companion Ran Mao alone might pierce the riddle of his unread expressions and catch a sidelong glance in unguarded moments. Yet that midnight flower keeps her own counsel, leaving all in doubt of her master’s motives. And thus Lau continues on unfettered, beholden only to his own inscrutable designs.

48. #48Opium Densselective

    Keys: Opium den

Nestled in London's shadowy Limehouse district, Lau's opium dens promise refuge to both the desperate and the decadent. Behind nondescript doors, incense and exotic spices mingle with narcotic fumes beckoning patrons within. Silken curtains veil private nooks where the city's sins recline languidly upon embroidered pillows awaiting poppy's soothing embrace.

Haunting notes from a guzheng mingle with soft laughter and murmurs echoing off richly carved wood panels. Lamps cast a crimson glow over the den's velvet gloom, their heady warmth loosening even the tightest tongues. Attendants glide gracefully through the haze balancing steaming pipes and cups of fragrant tea, ever ready to refresh dreams or offer more tangible company.

Yet hidden behind beaded room dividers, darker schemes take shape amid more rarefied smoke. For London's most ambitious outcasts know secrets worth their weight pass through these gilded confines. The right palm crossed discreetly purchases details from coroners, aristocrats and assassins alike.

So within the dens' perfumed interior, gossip from the street barters equal with Parliament's closeted skeletons. All information finds its price, and its buyer, before the last ember fades from the opium lamp's curved neck. For Lau's empire rests not just on poppy but the leverage held over friend and foe when they bare their unguarded hearts. Thus these dens welcome both pleasure seekers and power brokers alike - the line between soon blurred by the pipe's seductive allure.

49. #49Ran-Maoselective

    Keys: blue cat, Ran-Mao

Silent as a prowling cat, Ran-Mao lingers ever at her master Lau's side. Behind an impassive, doll-like gaze stirs a ruthless hunter, her lithe frame belying lethal skills honed through a life in London's shadows. Twin braids crown cold eyes with catlike slits that miss no movement, no matter how subtle.

Few hear Ran-Mao's voice, its velvet tones reserved only for Lau's ear as she whispers intelligence gathered moving unseen through dens of iniquity. Yet a single nod sends her flowing into action, meteor hammers shattering stone and bone alike with uncanny grace. For this demure maiden serves not merely as Lau's ornamental companion - but as the steel claw maintaining his carefully cultivated reputation.

So Ran-Mao continues her master's deadly work behind an innocent facade, her cherubic face never betraying the blood staining delicate hands. As Lau's smiling shadow, she slips effortlessly between roles as spy, seductress or merciless assassin bent on keeping threats at bay. Soft bells on her anklets chime gentle counterpoint to the meaty impacts of iron on flesh.

Thus she has earned well the moniker of Lau's "blue cat" - toying with adversaries before the inevitable, brutal end. Her presence may be silent, but in the underworld her name conjures fear in even the most hardened gangsters. For those who mistake Ran-Mao's vapid stare for weakness face sharp retribution...and perhaps a final glimpse of her chilling smile as Lau's ornamental pet administers the fatal blow.

50. #50Kelvin Manorselective

    Keys: Kelvin Manor

Past foreboding iron gates, Kelvin Manor sprawls silent and gloomy across a desolate landscape. Its opulent yet antiquated halls stand empty save for the unfortunate souls its master collects. For behind the manor’s imposing edifice, Baron Kelvin’s warped obsession holds countless children captive to feed his insatiable appetite for aesthetic perfection.

While Kelvin himself lies bound to his sickbed, the manor thrums with frantic energy fulfilling its master’s deranged desires. Blank-eyed children rehearse dangerous circus feats under the watchful eyes of the Baron’s mysterious assistants. Elaborate prosthetics line the walls – products of the nearby workhouse’s sinister experiments in human enhancement.

And the deepest chamber hides Kelvin’s crowning project: an elaborate replica of the sacrificial amphitheater from Phantomhive legend. For years, the Baron has been meticulously recreating each gruesome detail that might bring him closer to the erstwhile Earl and his unearthly allure. Now caged “dolls” await their chance to reenact that diabolical rite...if they survive their master’s entertainment.

So Kelvin Manor stands as a gilded prison where innocence is sacrificed upon the altar of aesthetic obsession. Yet behind its elegant facade, the vile purpose at the estate’s heart patiently awaits any wayward soul who may satisfy the Baron’s perverse designs. For no price is too high to achieve perfection in the eyes of one drunk on beauty not meant for mortal men to possess.
