In blog notes from 2011,[8] Himaruya stated about America's physique that "because he is still young, he isn't brawny even though he has muscles". He also added that he tries drawing America with a lean body type. Personality and Interests America is a cheerful, energetic, yet somewhat conceited young man who is obsessed with heroes, justice, and freedom. He has the habit of sticking his nose into everyone else's business, which causes him to have difficulty making friends. He loves hamburgers and junk food, to the point of an obsession, and can even eat strange and inedible things due to inheriting England's sense of taste (or lack thereof). America is also known for not being aware of how "the atmosphere" is when he is around others (which, at one point, he was told to read it), but it has been noted that it is not that he lacks the ability to "assess the situation", he simply chooses not to. His profile states that his hobbies are sports, games, and making movies, but he also enjoys watching movies specifically of the horror genre. On multiple occasions, he has forced Japan to watch movies that he calls "Too freaking scary!" because they are about ghosts and paranormal activity. Japan gives him zombie video games to come over his fear of ghosts. Furthermore, in the side-story Black Ships Have Come, in introducing himself to Japan, he states that his hobbies are "quick-draw, archaeology, and adventures" (which is translated to Japan as America's hobby being lechery). He possesses an abnormal amount of strength, shown even as a child by easily swinging a full-grown buffalo around, and has been once seen running around dragging a heavy Rolls Royce that belong to England with one hand behind him for an hour in order to ask permission to borrow it. In the NotoSama 6 game, America was able to stop a car with the heel of his foot. America is shown to be ignorant of the geography outside his own home, believing that maps of the United States constitute the "world map" and believes that he can simply get to other countries by car travel. He is shown becoming concerned about his weight in the strip Supersize You! and it is mentioned that he has invented strange diet machines as well as becoming obsessed with exercise which has caused him to become paranoid about his rising weight, as he is unaware of his building muscle. Aside from being afraid of ghosts, scary movies, and weighing scales, he also fears marmite. As America is obsessed with heroes and happy endings, he hopes that his future will be that way. Though he is friends with a space alien named Tony, he does not believe in England's magical friends, fairies, or unicorns, except on Halloween.Although commonly referred to as "America", some merchandise refers to him by the full term "United States Of America", or simply "U.S." for short. In some fanart he is portrayed with a rabbit as a reference to how "U.S.A." can also be "usa", which means "bunny" in Japanese. The child version of America was also shown to have a bunny following him when he first met the older nations. According to Himaruya, America's personality was based off of his teacher's. The same teacher is said to have a strong disinterest in world geography. Meanwhile, America's appearance is based off of that of a Canadian that Himaruya met when he went to America. Notes in the special edition booklet for Hetalia: Axis Powers volume 3 revealed that America was originally intended to be smarter and more cocky, but evolved into a louder, heroic-wannabe type of character. Himaruya noted that in retrospect, the original character personality would have been harder to use. In a set of character notes, it is revealed that America has mingled a lot with Germanic blood, and that he was insecure for having no history of his own before England adopted him. In England, Dreaming About The Past, it was revealed by a sleeping England that America used to wet his bed when he was younger. It is a source of debate among fans as to whether it is America or Canada that is the older of the two brothers (with Himaruya having not confirmed a set age difference between the two). A common fan interpretations is that the two are twins, due to their very similar appearances, though this has not been directly confirmed. Though they do not have the same birthday, supporters of this theory point out that the nations' birthdays merely refer to their date of independence or unification, and that a nation may not have an official birthday in the same sense as humans. For example, America's "birthday" is listed as July 4th, the day the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, however, he was alive for an unknown number of years prior to this. It is unknown when exactly either were born and it is also unknown what Canada's physical age is. However, when Canada asked England which of them was older, England used the measurement of who learnt the alphabet first. In this case, Canada determined that this would make him the older sibling.[21] The number "50" on his jacket, representing the 50 states, is historically incorrect during the comics taking placeduring World War II. Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959, and Alaska became a state on January 3, 1959, both long after the end of World War II. This is likely the reason the "50" is not present in the anime adaption. America served in the Air Force branch of the U.S. military. This is known because he has been repeatedly drawn in Air Force uniforms and he has been depicted flying a plane. In Hetalia Fantasia 2 it is revealed that America has at least 238 weaknesses, one of those being Dora The Explorer. America like cars and seems to have a car collection, as it is said that he has several, including a Mustang, a remodeled Caprice, a 1955 Thunderbird, and a DeLorean modeled after the car in the movie Back to the Future. In the 2010 Christmas event, he said that he was jealous of all of the kids in his country that get presents from their fathers. This may be a reference to America's fast growth and young age, how he missed out on a lot of childhood things by growing physically mature so quickly, and the fact that he does not have parental figures. In World☆Stars, America is shown to secretly admire Canada's personality to get along with everyone (despite Canada's desire to change it), calling him "blessed" to have such an ability. He is also shown to be taken aback by how much Canada knows about his politics and entertainment, while he knows very little about Canada's. In the strip Until It Becomes Buried in the Cabinets, America stars in a hair iron commercial. An off-screen voice refers to him by his human name of Alfred. In response to a question from a fan on Himaruya's blog, it was stated that in addition to America's glasses representing Texas, his glasses are "a prop to show you he's normally disguising his power". This pays homage to the American cartoon trope where the hero conceals his identity with a pair of glasses. However, America still feels like a hero even with them on. In chapter 32, thirty of America's New Years resolutions were revealed to focus on body image; wanting to either build muscle, drop down to 3% body fat, or be skinnier or slimmer. Because of his relatively strong/stable economy, America has been shown to have a cold only once but that it spread to others, notably Japan, possibly because of trades he has with other countries.

According to France, he's rather slender. In World War II, he dresses in a green dress military uniform, which consists of a green jacket, a brown Sam Browne Belt (the over-the-right-shoulder-and-waist-belt), green pants tucked into his boots, off-white shirt (sort of off-yellow in the manga and webcomic in the colored drawings), a tie that's a shade of green that's slightly darker than the rest of his uniform, and brown boots that almost come up to his knees.

   Himaruya has stated that he dresses smart casual most of the time, and as a punk when he's out for fun. His eyebrows are very prominent and bushy, despite that he apparently trims them. Himaruya mentions that his eyebrows were cursed into bushiness. They are a trait that is shared by his younger brother Sealand, as well as Australia, Hong Kong, and Wy. He also happens to be the same height as France.

   In the original manga, his hair seemed to be golden blond, but in the first four seasons of the anime, it is bright yellow. The first four seasons of the anime also exaggerated the size of his eyebrows.

   Personality and Interests

   England is a fanciful, blunt, obstinate former pirate who used to torment Spain. In modern times he claims to be a gentleman; however, he is cynical, sharp-tongued, prone to rough speech, and yearns for the golden years. He often uses British vocabulary, such as wanker, Yank (Yankee), bloody, twit, and git. He is noted for being horrible at cooking which has caused America, his former charge, to have "bad" taste in food.

   S3E14 England 1 Episode 66 England is also, apparently, the "king of losing things", and France has described him as "somehow extremely useless when it comes to matters not pertaining to himself or America". He can be described as "spacey" because of his strong belief in magic, spirits, fairies, and other fantasy creatures. He has the ability to perform magic, such as spells and curses, and can also summon demons and other magical creatures. He is able to communicate with supernatural beings and is not limited to creatures from his homeland, being able to interact with youkai and spirits from Japanese folklore. He also happens to have fantasy friends, such as a flying bunny, unicorns, fairies, gnomes, and Captain Hook, but oddly enough he did not believe in Santa Claus until Finland came and brought them presents. Despite this, England often ridicules America's belief in aliens and Tony.

   According to the author's notes, England's interests include embroidery, craftsmanship, literature, rock music, and giving scathing criticisms to America's movies. He appears to be sharp-witted and surprisingly creative, although he seems to have rather bad luck. According to the author, he is rarely afraid of anything, and is rather interested in ghost stories, especially if he can use them to startle America. He also seems to be very stubborn and strong-willed and does not easily succumb to stress or pressure. He is shown to be startlingly mature at times and is very friendly with young or cute people and magical creatures. He also has a quite strong sense of responsibility and has been seen scolding France and America when they don't take things seriously. In some recent notes, the author has stated that England has a very rich and unlimited personality and that he can't decide whether England is a serious person or not.

   Because of his status as an island nation, England is pretty distant and prefers to work alone. Perhaps because of this, he does not know how to express himself, leading to others often misunderstanding him. He is also depicted as being self-deprecating or tsundere. For example, despite his generally harsh behavior, he is definitely stated to have a softer side and seems to genuinely care for other nations. This is illustrated by the fact that he likes giving them advice, yet specifically mentions that he "does not do it because he's worried about them". Despite all this, he highly values his country's pride, and sometimes comes over as very arrogant. Despite his cynical, realistic view of the world, he is said to be a "quite a romanticist before he goes to sleep." When drunk, he suddenly becomes very nostalgic, and the next morning, he'll pretend that nothing has happened. Also, every year when the Fourth of July comes around, his condition collapses.

   In a blog post, England is depicted as not being able to swim to illustrate how British characters can't swim in movies.

   It has been mentioned that England has brothers, one representing Scotland, and the others presumably Wales and Northern Ireland, who hate him and used to drive him away with stones and arrows when he was a child, and even went as far as to mail him curses He is referred to as United Kingdom, or UK for short, in most merchandise and in his character design on the official anime website (and in some merchandise and fanworks, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, his full nation title). In other instances, however, he is referred to as England, most notably in Gakuen Hetalia and the English-language preview for America's Cleaning of the Storage. The Japanese word Igirisu means Britain but is sometimes used to refer to England (normally rendered as Ingurando in katakana or eikoku in kanji) in colloquial speech. He is commonly referred to with either name by fans, though England tends to be used to differentiate him from his brothers (that represent the other parts of the UK). A note by Hidekaz Himaruya confirms that he would only be known as England to his brothers, while he would be known as UK to the others. However, the English dub refers to him as Britain. According to FUNimation, this was a request from the Japanese anime producers. OriginalUK The Original UK character design as seen in Hetalia: Chapter 1. Although he's always called Igirisu in the manga and anime, historically, he would be known as simply England up until the 18th century, when The Kingdom of Great Britain was formed, uniting both England and Scotland (the Act of Union of Wales and England had already taken place 1536-1543). In the early 19th century, Ireland was added, creating The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After Ireland split to declare itself independent in 1919, the Irish War of Independence waged until 1922, when it became the Irish Free State. Six of the 32 counties of Ireland (mostly from the province of Ulster where there was a great English/Scottish population) rejoined the UK while the other 26 counties formed the Republic of Ireland. A UK character is actually first seen at the end of Hetalia: Chapter 1, however, his design was not yet completely finalized. He appears as a short-haired man with a UK label on his shirt and with somewhat thinner eyebrows. Notes in the special booklet for the third volume of the published manga reveal that England was originally to have normal eyebrows, as well as have the appearance of a middle-aged man who dressed much younger. Himaruya decided to give him thicker eyebrows, as he liked the idea of a character having brows modeled after a Shiba Inu. He appears to be modeled after the character Hikone Kalom from Himaruya's other webcomic Barjona Bombers, though he is the exact opposite of Kalom in personality. His birthday could be referred to the 23rd of April, or St. George's Day. Himaruya once stated that his eyebrows are actually trimmed, although they don't appear that way since they still remain thick in appearance. He has also stated that Ireland has thicker eyebrows, but with a "different feel" to them. It is possible that he has a tattoo, for he mentions in his version of Marukaite Chikyuu that "My tattoo really hurts, but it's a hot six-string!" (six-string meaning electric guitar). According to a blog post (11/14/10), ironically, island nation and former pirate England, cannot swim (in reference to English people in movies,) although, historically, many pirates could not swim. Although, in the Gakuen Hetalia Portable, he jumps into the water to save a drowning America. The original blogpost was a parody based on characters from English movies and there is nothing to suggest England cannot in fact swim, though the fandom seems to have adopted the idea misguidedly. In a translated blog post (17 January 2015) of the official Himaruya blog, it is confirmed that his tattoo is located on his butt. In the English dub of the series, when England is singing to the young America after being chosen as his new brother, the lyrics he is singing are from the song The Phantom of the Opera from the 2004 movie The Phantom of the Opera. In The Circumstances of the UK Bros…, England and Scotland revealed that they have a card game to settle things so they do not have to trade physical blows. The cards include things like each countries harshest weather, distances to stay away from each other, musical instruments, etc. England beat Scotland during the games debut. During the same chapter, England is revealed to have made delicious scones but Germany had lost his appetite during the game.

He is often depicted with a rose, which is also used to censor his genitals in his nude scenes When France initially appeared in the webcomic, his hair was drawn shorter and less wavy, but was drawn longer over time as the art style changed and evolved. He also originally wore white spats over his boots, a detail that was dropped in later artwork France was once a large nation, but after Napoleon Bonaparte had died, he was no longer good in wars and instead attracted tourists to his country with his wine. He has an intense rivalry with England and loves to argue with him over trivial topics (one example is arguing over "who is more perverted"). His hobbies are manipulation activities, agriculture, fashion design, sketching, singing, and telephones, as well as wandering around the art museums and fashion boutiques of Paris. He likes places that are a little odd or chic.

   France is infatuated with most of the nations and is known to make blatant sexual comments at every opportunity and is very affectionate, often shown streaking or touching other nations inappropriately. He is attracted to beautiful things, which include men and women of any age (supported by statements such as "Sure, I'll settle for boys! Boys are the best!" and "This onii-san here loves pure and innocent children like you." in response to a fan not knowing the meaning of the term "tachi") and maybe even some non-human beings. He said "be gentle to the ladies and be gentle to the earth" is his motto. He has admitted to being "the dandiest among the dandies." He loves himself so much that he does not bother to remember English and considers French the "language of love." In addition, he has referred to the others as insignificant characters.

   He likes men who have exquisite bodies and give him a good impression, and has no preference in their personalities, so long as they are not loud like England. He said he would like cool but passionate women and might latch on best to someone who is good at singing. He also mentioned, in response to that the French supposedly fall in love due to other's body odors, that a faint, flowery scent could have him curled up in pleasure.

   He stated that he is afraid of computers, Germany (and that he supposedly hates Germans in general, despite that he seems to get along with both brothers as of recent), Russia, Switzerland, whenever England is angry, and possibly Turkey. He stated this through a response to a fan, thus over the computer, and that doing so was bad enough for him. It seems that gardening relaxes him, and that he is not intimidated by other technologies, as he claimed to be playing "Bokosuka", a video game, with Germany and England. In response to another fan suggesting their lack of will to stand near him because of his overbearing scent, he stated that he only wore a little perfume.

   He has referenced his old age several times, saying things like how his waist is always creaking, his back hurts, and that he had to surrender to sleep early in the day. Despite this, he gets upset when said that he is a grandpa as opposed to a big brother, and claims he is still young. His birthdate (July 14th) corresponds with the date of the French national holiday known as Bastille Day, a celebration of the anniversary of the Storming of the Bastille. In notes included in the special edition booklet for Hetalia: Axis Powers volume 3, Himaruya stated that France was originally meant to look more middle-aged, and that he was intended to have a completely suave personality. The "older", shorter-haired design could be seen in early chapters of the webcomic, but faded as the style changed. France shares both Japanese and English voice actors, Masaya Onosaka and J. Michael Tatum respectively, with Issac Dian, a character from the anime Baccano!. He also shares J. Michael Tatum as an English voice actor with Sebastian Michealis from Kuroshitsuji/Black Butler and Kyoya Ootori from Ouran High School Host Club. In volume 4 it was revealed that he is a member of the Academy Gourmet Food Club along with Turkey and China. In the same scene of this colored chapter, a graphic hue edit or lighting error used to accentuate the punchline of this scene accidentally discolored these three characters' uniform pants to an odd shade of green, opening a door for some fan confusion

   The Axis Powers Volume 5 special booklet[6] states that he has been designed to have a face with more personality that differs from the usual handsome ideal, and puts a lot of effort into grooming his hair. He is also described to have particularly muscular thighs.

   Similarly, a blog post from 2011,[7] ranks him in the "solidly built" category alongside Greece. General: Germany is known for being very serious and straightforward majority of the time. He usually does not joke around, usually being all business, and is very efficient in his everyday life. Although he comes off as intimidating to others, Germany has been shown to be helpful to others.

   Training: Germany can often be seen doing different forms of physical training and mental strategizing. He takes his physical training seriously, anything from cardio to weight lifting, and has used these same principals on others, such as Italy and Japan, with mixed results. When thinking of strategies, Germany will look into a variety of things that will help him formulate the best course of action; taking into consideration others personalities, ways of thinking, previous battle history, current military/country strength and power, and other things. Germany especially takes his weapons training seriously. Being skilled in firearms, he knows his weapons well and the proper way to use and maintain them. He has even instructed Italy how to use a grenade, but the other country did things the opposite of how instructed.

   Leadership: Germany is usually looked at as the head of the Axis group due to being bolder and being heavily involved with his military and keeping up to date with current military tactics and events. He is usually the one training others in combat and strategy and will lead meetings if necessary. Germany also believes in leading by example and had once given up drinking beer in order to encourage Japan to take his diet seriously.

   Cleanliness: Germany is a well-known neat freak, needing to keep things clean and in proper order at all times. He is especially particular in keeping his clothing and house in order, having been seen properly folding his uniform before working out and even going behind Italy to keep his kitchen clean while he was cooking.

   Hobbies: Some of his hobbies include making sweets, reading, and walking his dogs. Although he keeps it secret that he likes to bake cakes, he does not hide that he greatly cares for his pets. He can often be seen reading anything that catches his interest or to better understand something he is not familiar with, such as the behavior of Italians.

   Private interests: Mainly revealed through Italy's frightened gushing, Germany has quite an interest in sexual activities that he tries to keep hidden. Italy also claims that Germany has interests that would surprise most others if they knew of them.

   Friendships: Because of his personality and intimidating appearance, Germany has a difficult time making friends. He is noted to have not either have the time or social skills to approach others in hopes of getting acquainted until he met Italy. He was implied through his journal to have been somewhat bothered by this and had described that Italy was the first/only friend he had. However, when he does make a genuine friendship with someone, he is incredibly loyal and supportive of that person. He will often jump in to help with several situations and will gratefully accept their help when offered.

   Family: Germany has several family members that are noticeably different than himself in terms of personality and country strength. Although he is younger than many of his relatives, he appears to be one of, if not the, strongest and most stable. These differences can be seen when he is around Prussia or Austria. Germany can be seen supporting the two because of delicacies or instability. He and Italy have had sec many times In the original webcomic artwork, most notably in the World War-era strips, Germany was represented with the Nazi German Reichskriegsflagge (due to the setting of the comic). Later-era strips and artwork used the more modern flag, while the Reichskriegsflagge was done away with in later media adaptations of the series. Germany's three dogs went unnamed for some time in canon, until the second Character CD revealed their names to be Blackie, Berlitz, and Aster. His efficient and perfectionist personality is a reference to the German culture of cleanliness and tidiness. Italy revealing that Germany likes BDSM is a reference to the fact that German pornography is often very hardcore and kinky compared to most porn, and that an unusual amount of scat porn is exported from Germany. It has been said that Germany was based on a German friend of Hidekaz Himaruya. According to Himaruya, the personification of Germany was the hardest to finalize as he had little experience of drawing foreigners at the time. Germany was originally intended to be a moodier, more intimidating character and was initially depicted with a much larger nose and a rougher appearance. It is hinted obliquely, but not yet confirmed, that Germany may be the Holy Roman Empire, having lost his childhood memories. Most of the hints stem from the incredibly similar appearances Germany and HRE share.
