- #1Black Mesa
Keys: B.M.R.F., Black Mesa Research Facility, Black Mesa
The Black Mesa Research Facility, B.M.R.F., or Black Mesa for short, is the headquarters of the Black Mesa corporation. It is located in the New Mexico desert, USA.
The Black Mesa facility was apparently built over several decommissioned ICBM launching and testing silo complexes constructed during the 1950s, which was converted into a vast civilian institute for the research of almost every conceivable scientific discipline, loosely spread along seven main Sectors. Some areas are also described by characters such as Rosenberg as "old" or "abandoned"; several areas of the complex are badly run-down despite the obvious fact that they are still in use. However, the surface areas of Black Mesa feature more modern construction.
Black Mesa's Science Team undertakes the company's various scientific researches in the facility, which is a very high-security complex, as each employee is required to undergo a series of rigorous security checks to access most areas. Security guards, carrying firearms and trained for emergencies, are present everywhere. The complex is also equipped with retinal scanners and alarms, as well as heavy blast doors that may shut down in case of fire, explosion, or other events. Black Mesa can be completely sealed from the outside. In the event of an emergency (such as leaks of dangerous materials, escape of specimens, or even government cleanups), the "military" (the HECU) and in worse cases "trained assassins" (the Black Ops), referred to as "a dangerous and very efficient clean-up crew", are to enter the facility. An intervention from the HECU and the Black Ops seems to be a known fact among the personnel, although some employees consider it a rumour. Black Mesa also contains many automated Automatic Turrets, which, when activated, will emerge from armoured cupolas and fire upon any moving object in their line of sight.
As employees are required to live in the complex itself, Black Mesa contains many personnel facilities, including laundromats, recreation and sports areas such as lounges, at least one basketball court, at least one swimming pool, a library, fast food outlets, food courts, cafeterias, and numerous vending machines. The facility is well-populated by rest areas and dormitories for the employees of the facility. As Eli Vance reveals at Black Mesa East that his wife and daughter lived in Black Mesa with him, it can be inferred that employees' families reside in the dormitory complexes as well. Despite being located in the middle of a desert, the underground and indoor sectors of Black Mesa are maintained at a "pleasant 68°" Fahrenheit (20° Celsius) at all times, enabled by Black Mesa's sprawling network of ventilation ducts.
The facility is apparently self-sufficient, housing its own ventilation, plumbing, sewage, and power generation systems including a Hydro-Electric Dam and multiple types of electrical generators and reactors, some using nuclear technology. Black Mesa is also apparently kept supplied by a conventional freight rail linked to the outside, managed in the Freight Yard.
The complex is dominated by a bewildering number of underground laboratories, test areas (including a powerful Anti-Mass Spectrometer), and administration offices, most of which contain very high-tech equipment, and even a rocket launch site. The complex also features multi-story car parks (where only Black Mesa SUVs can be found), arsenals of nuclear and conventional weapons, and a local electric rail materials transport network, the Sector E Materials Transport.
In the underground laboratories, administration offices and dormitories, the main sections are always indicated in important intersections areas, and follow color codes consisting of lines running along the corridors to the related location, stopping at each reached location. This is seen for instance in the Anomalous Materials Labs and the Level 3 Dormitories.
All main Sectors are linked together by the Black Mesa Transit System, the monorail network going through the whole facility.
Black Mesa is equipped with a public address system, the Black Mesa Announcement System, relaying audible messages and announcements across the facility with a male voice. The complex also has its own newspaper, The Mesa Times, although it is unknown if it is an outside publication or exclusively made by the company for its personnel.
The Black Mesa Research Facility, being a science research facility, presents numerous hazards to both health and safety. These can include:
Electrical hazards, from electrical apparatus and power systems Burning/heat hazards, from steam pipes, furnaces or any other hot apparatus Freezing hazards, from freezers and super coolants Acid / corrosive hazards, from countless acid and alkali chemicals in all different applications Radioactive hazards, from nuclear reactors and waste Biohazards, from biological waste and residue A risk of drowning in extremely deep water basins Being harmed/killed by underwater machinery A risk of fractures from falling, and/or machinery Due to so many possible hazards being present in various applications all throughout Black Mesa, precautions must be taken. Certain areas call for the use of safety equipment, others will only allow entry when wearing an HEV Suit, a cleansuit or an armor vest and helmet. This point is backed up by security guards stationed at 'secure access' doors being instructed to only permit access if the entrant is wearing proper equipment.
Black Mesa also features an enormous supply of medical facilities and equipment. There are wall-mounted first aid stations, supplies of portable first aid satchels, infirmary areas. Many scientists are also trained in first aid.
- #2Xen
Keys: the borderworld, Xen
Xen (pronounced "zen"), also referred to as the borderworld, is a separate overlapping dimension notably discovered by the Black Mesa science team, who regularly traveled there via portals to collect samples and study the myriad species of flora and fauna within. Xen is described as a "dimensional transit bottleneck--an area of continual contention." It is the final retreat of Nihilanth's race, and a place to which most of the alien species appearing in the Half-Life series migrated to before coming to Earth during the Resonance Cascade.
Rather than being a planet or an artificial structure such as a space station, all of the locations of Xen visited by the player during the course of the Half-Life series are on the surfaces of (or within) asteroid islands floating within a nebular void.
Xen is notable for having greatly reduced gravity compared to Earth's. However, given that Xen is comprised of low mass asteroids, it is surprising that there is any appreciable gravitational pull at all, let alone a pull strong enough to retain an atmosphere. Another feature is that gravity is always directed downwards, rather than towards the asteroid, so that one can actually fall off an asteroid into the void below. While it is possible that the "islands" are small chunks orbiting a larger and unseen planetoid, these unusual physics strongly suggest that Xen occupies an alternate dimension where conventional physics may simply not fully apply.
Xen's atmosphere seems to be similar to that of Earth's, as the Xen wildlife appears to have no trouble surviving on the planet. Furthermore, several human characters including Gordon Freeman and Barney Calhoun are shown to be able to breathe in Xen without any additional life support.
The Xen asteroids are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, forming a complex ecosystem. It has been stated that no species is native to Xen, meaning that, although resident in Xen at the time of Half-Life, all of these species originated elsewhere and were moved there, willingly or unwillingly. While mostly seen as lifeless, the presence of water (reddish-green in colour) indicates that the dimension is somewhat capable of supporting life.
Some species, such as Barnacles, Bullsquid, Headcrabs, and Houndeyes appear to occupy niches similar to various carnivorous terrestrial animals (albeit with unusual anatomical or physiological features). However, even these creatures are dwarfed by the towering six-meter high, four-legged invertebrate known as the Gonarch - the final stage of a Headcrab's life cycle.
Seen frequently in Xen, and occasionally in Black Mesa, where they transport Alien Grunts, Alien Crafts glide seemingly without effort through the void. It is uncertain whether these ray-like beings are living creatures or examples of war machines built around advanced biotechnology. In the closing sequence of Half-Life, and in several areas of Blue Shift, Boids can be seen flying in flocks, emitting resonant calls.
Other more intelligent species, such as the Alien Controllers and Vortigaunts, form part of an advanced alien civilization with other species, such as the Alien Grunts (made there in the mines) and Gargantua, composing their military. As the player progresses through Half-Life, it becomes clear that this civilization is controlled by a central intelligence, the Nihilanth. Although differing in many ways, the Controllers, Vortigaunts, Grunts, Gargantuas, and the Nihilanth share a common morphology that includes a seemingly vestigial third limb in the center of their thorax and vertically-opening mouths, emphasizing the close relation between these species.
A few creatures that appear in Xen are difficult to categorize as either fauna or flora due to their unusual appearance. Stationary bio-luminescent stalks appear in large numbers throughout Xen and will retract when approached. Fungus-like organisms are very common on Xen. The much larger and extremely aggressive, but rarely encountered, Tentacles pose a major hazard to those who wander near their pits. There are also bizarre tree-like structures dotted around the landscape, resembling underdeveloped Tentacles. These "trees", often accompanied by hair-like plants and previously mentioned Xen Plant Lights, sway gently and appear harmless when observed from a distance, but stab viciously at any creature that enters their immediate vicinity. There are also strange trampoline-like plants, known as the Bio Sphincters, seen also in Black Mesa Research Facility, that release a blast of air when stepped on. A similar kind was seen on Xen where it opens and closes, and the said opening releases a gust of air like a vent.
Since the Combine's takeover of would-be Xen creature's former world, they retreated to Xen via teleportation and colonized it with their buildings and technology (also bringing with them invasive wildlife, pests, and parasites). The buildings for the Vortigaunts were primitive and lacked luxury or necessary needs of survival (besides the healing pool in the back) due to their social class as slaves. The Vortigaunts' buildings look like small hills carved by an unknown tool. Various lights, elevators, conveyor belts, pistons, force fields and portals are present in the inhabited parts of Xen, especially the Mines.
Some unidentified Xen machinery made of a moving cylinder held by four legs can be seen near Vortigaunts' shacks; the cylinder pumps in a piston-like motion into the ground, creating green rings that fly off into the sky - this same effect is seen in other locations on Xen, such as along the "chimneys" of the very first island. These machines are apparently managed by the Alien Slaves, as two are briefly seen mimicking the machinery's oscillations with their hands. Two examples can be seen in a functioning state outside, while two others can be seen dismantled in the Mines.
The Alien Grunts are stored and transported around in barrel-like containers. The supreme leader, the Nihilanth has its own personal chamber which is heavily defended by Vortigaunts, and Alien Controllers and includes Xen crystals used for regaining strength.
- #3HECU
Keys: HECU, Hazardous Environment Combat Unit
The Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU), often referred to simply as the military, Marines, soldiers, or grunts, is a United States Marine Corps special forces unit.
The HECU Marines are sent in to clean up the Black Mesa Research Facility following the incident, their mission being to eliminate anyone with knowledge of the research project and the extraterrestrial life involved. They are specially trained at the Santego Military Base to deal with a variety of indoor combat situations, particularly those involving dangerous environments and unconventional hostiles. Apart from combat roles, they make take on specialized capacities such as becoming Medics or Engineers. They are initially described as working in cooperation with the Black Mesa Security Force in case of emergency circumstances, a role that changes during the progression of their mission.
They wear urban camouflage battle dress uniforms and a Powered Combat Vest, and are armed with grenade launcher-equipped Submachine Guns, Shotguns, M249s, M-40A1 Sniper Rifles, 9mm Pistols and Desert Eagles. They carry grenades to flush out their targets. They work in squads and keep in communication by way of radios. They can send grenades back at enemies either by picking them up and throwing them or kicking them. They can also kick their opponents in close combat. In areas that they have heavily fortified, they make use of Laser Tripmines, Sentry Guns, and a variety of manned turrets and weapon emplacements. Outdoors, they are backed in the air by Apaches, Jets and Ospreys while Abrams, Bradleys and trucks provide support on the ground.
- #4Black Ops
Keys: Black Operations, Black-Ops, Black Ops
The Black Ops, sometimes hyphenated to Black-Ops and sometimes referred to as Black Operations, are a commando group of trained government assassins. Soon after the HECU, they invade the Black Mesa Research Facility to conceal any evidence of the Resonance Cascade.
While it is stated that the HECU and the Black Ops are officially known to enter the facility in the event of an emergency and work with the Security Force as "a dangerous and very efficient clean-up crew" (although some employees consider it a rumour), they are shown to work independently, killing all living things inside the base, whether they are Black Mesa employees, HECU soldiers, or alien (Xen and Race X) lifeforms, and eventually destroying Black Mesa altogether through the use of a nuclear weapon.
- #5Hazardous Environment Suit
Keys: HEV, HEV Suit, Hazard Suit, Hazardous Environment Suit
The Hazardous Environment Suit, also simply known as the HEV Suit, or the Hazard Suit, is a protective suit worn by Gordon Freeman and other members of the Black Mesa Science Team.
The suit was designed for use in hazardous environment conditions. It provides limited protection from the elements. It also displays vital information on the heads-up display. A computerized female voice speaks from the suit to provide information on the user's status as well as updates on environmental conditions. The suit needs to be recharged periodically; the greater the charge, the more protective power the suit provides. It can be recharged by using wall-mounted chargers or power modules. The suit design appears to be unisex, and it has a Lambda logo on the chest.
- #6Powered Combat Vest
Keys: Powered Combat Vest, PCV
The Powered Combat Vest, also simply known as the PCV, is a protective vest worn by the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit Marines and the Military Police.
Upon military approval, it entered use by the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit and certain elements of the Military Police.
Part of the combat equipment used by the HECU in their initial incursion into Black Mesa and during the events that occur throughout Half-Life storyline, the PCV is designed to protect the user from chemical, biological, radiological and physical threats during operations in the unit's defined battlespace. The vest increases the effectiveness and versatility of the user, allowing them to operate in environments outside the normal bounds of the regular infantry.
The PCV is compatible with a gas mask resembling the M40 Field Protective Mask with built-in night-vision goggles. In addition, the PCV includes a Geiger counter, morphine administrator (which allows the soldier to function normally even after serious injury), tactical radio, and a head-up display (HUD) in the protective mask lens, which tracks the user's medical condition and weapon ammunition. The vest contains an onboard computer system that constantly monitors the user's health and vital signs, and reacts to any changes in the user's condition, though, unlike the HEV, there is no audible computer that alerts the user and instead uses the HUD in the helmet. Like the HEV, it absorbs 66% of the damage the user takes.
It may be noted that the PCV is comparable to the HEV Suit, which is worn by several Black Mesa personnel, including Gordon Freeman. This similarity is mostly attributed to the types of equipment included in both. In addition, the PCV's armor charge is also rechargeable at civilian, military, or government electrical chargers, including those that are designed specifically for HEV Suits.
- #7Anti-Mass Spectrometer
Keys: Anti-Mass Spectrometer
The Anti-Mass Spectrometer is a room-sized piece of equipment located in Sector C's Test Lab C-33/a at the Black Mesa Research Facility that is used to analyze exotic materials such as Xen crystals. It was designed by Dr. Rosenberg.
The operation of the machinery requires cooperation between a number of people, including control rooms, test chamber, and sample storage personnel. First, from the lower level, power to the device has to be switched on and the desired intensity (up to 80%) has to be set; in the main test chamber, the rotors have to be started. Stage one and two emitters are then powered on from the main control room and begin to produce visible beams. The monitoring personnel can increase the intensity of the Spectrometer, but the equipment was not designed to be run at more than 90% as doing so nullifies the safety buffer. Samples are brought into the upper test chamber by a lift from the lower levels and are held by a cart to be pushed by a person into the Spectrometer's beam. The containment system with dampening fields prevents a Resonance Cascade from occurring. Although they can be manually turned off, doing so produces a noticeable discrepancy in the displacement flow indicators.
Despite the high levels of energy used in the experiments (running the spectrometer requires the use of HEV Suits, the process is shown to place visible strain on the entire facility's power sources), it was a typically safe procedure. The final experiment of the Black Mesa Anti-Mass Spectrometer, combining a highly unstable sample and the disabling of certain safety features, triggered a Resonance Cascade and was the opening event of the Black Mesa incident. The Anti-Mass Spectrometer was heavily damaged during the Resonance Cascade, but not actually destroyed until Black Mesa itself was detonated.
- #8Black Mesa Incident
Keys: Lambda Incident, Black Mesa Incident, Black Mesa Disaster
The Black Mesa Incident, also referred to as the Black Mesa Disaster and the Lambda Incident, is an infamous catastrophic event that took place from May 16th to May 17th 2001, resulting from an experiment carried out at the Black Mesa Research Facility, which resulted in a Resonance Cascade, and ultimately the invasion of Earth by the Combine. Its aftermath sees the teleportation of multiple races of extra-terrestrials into Black Mesa; the resulting five-sided battle between the base's personnel, human military forces, government assassins, Xen creatures, and Race X forces concluded in the complete destruction of the facility and the deaths of almost all those involved.
